The production of radioactive isotopes in scintillation detectors by muons and their secondary shower particles has been studied experimentally at the SPS muon beam at CERN. This paper shows the results obtained in cross-section measurements on liquid scintillator targets, especially on /sup 12/C which is the most relevant target in these organic materials. [...]

In this article the muon induced spallation background in forthcoming and future solar neutrino experiments like BOREXINO, KAMLAND, LENS and LIQUID XENON is being discussed. The results of cross section measurements at the SPS muon beam at CERN to determine the muon induced insitu production of radioactive isotopes in scintillator based targets are presented as well as the calculated and estimated background rates for the solar neutrino experiments mentioned above. To investigate muon-induced nuclear reactions leading to the production of radionuclides, targets made of C$_{9}$H$_{12}$, SiO$_{2}$, Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$, Al, S, CaCO$_{3}$, Fe, Ni, Cu, Gd, Yb and Tl were irradiated with 100 and 190 GeV muons in the NA54 experimental setup at CERN. The radionuclide concentrations were measured with accelerator mass spectrometry and gamma -spectroscopy. [...]

Target materials were exposed to a muon beam with an energy of 160 GeV/c at the COMPASS experiment line in CERN-SPS to measure the production cross-sections for muon-induced radionuclides. A muon imager containing four nickel plates, each measuring 100 mm×100 mm, exposed to the IP plate successfully detected the muon beam image during an irradiation period of 33 days. [...]
