The triple GEM detector as stray neutron monitor / Aza, Eleni (CERN ; Aristotle U., Thessaloniki) ; Magistris, M (CERN) ; Murtas, F (CERN ; Frascati) ; Puddu, S (CERN ; Bern U., LHEP) ; Silari, M (CERN)
A triple GEM detector for low energy neutrons and high rejection of gamma background was tested at the CERF facility at CERN as stray neutron monitor. The detector was exposed to a wide neutron spectrum generated by a 120 GeV/c positively charged hadron beam hitting a copper target. [...]

The triple GEM detector as beam monitor for relativistic hadron beams / Aza, E (CERN ; Aristotle U., Thessaloniki) ; Magistris, M (CERN) ; Murtas, F (CERN ; Frascati) ; Puddu, S (CERN ; Bern U., LHEP) ; Silari, M (CERN)
triple GEM detector was tested at the CERF facility at CERN as an on-line beam imaging monitor and as a counting reference device. It was exposed to a 120 GeV/c positively charged hadron beam (approximately 2/3 pions and 1/3 protons), which hits a copper target gen- erating a wide spectrum of different kinds of particles used for various experiments [...]

Impact of GEM foil hole geometry on GEM detector gain / Karadzhinova, A (Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Nolvi, A (Helsinki U.) ; Veenhof, R (Uludag U. ; CERN) ; Tuominen, E (Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Hæggström, E (Helsinki U.) ; Kassamakov, I (Helsinki Inst. of Phys. ; Helsinki U.)
Detailed 3D imaging of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foil hole geometry was realized. Scanning White Light Interferometry was used to examine six topological parameters of GEM foil holes from both sides of the foil. [...]

Production and installation of the first GEM station in CMS / Calzaferri, S (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia)
In 2017 the LHC reached the record beam luminosity 2$\cdot$ 10$^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$ s $^{-1}$, around a factor of two beyond the LHC design value. In December 2018 the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) entered the LS2 phase (Long Shutdown 2), which will last until beginning of 2021, in which the maintainance and upgrade program of LHC and the other smaller accelerators is scheduled. [...]

High rate capability studies of triple-GEM detectors for the ME0 upgrade of the CMS muon spectrometer / Bianco, M (CERN) ; Fallavollita, F (CERN) ; Fiorina, F (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Maggi, M (INFN, Bari ; Bari U.) ; Pellecchia, A (INFN, Bari ; Bari U.) ; Ramirez Garcia, L F (Antioquia U.) ; Rosi, N (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Verwilligen, P (INFN, Bari ; Bari U.) /CMS Muon Collaboration
The high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade is presenting new challenges for particle detector technologies. In the CMS muon system gaseous detectors, the increase in luminosity will produce a particle background ten times higher than at the LHC. [...]

Development of GEM-based Read-Out Chambers for the upgrade of the ALICE TPC / Gasik, P (Munich, Tech. U., Universe) /ALICE TPC
ALICE at the LHC at CERN is planning a major upgrade of the central barrel detectors, including the TPC, to cope with an increase of the LHC luminosity after 2018. A prototype of an ALICE TPC Inner Read-Out Chamber (IROC) was equipped with three large-size Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils as amplification stage to demonstrate the feasibility of replacing the current readout by Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers (MWPC) with such technology. Upgrade of the CMS Muon Spectrometer in the forward region with the GEM technology / Bianco, M (CERN) /CMS Collaboration
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be upgraded in several phases that will allow significant expansion of its physics program. The final luminosity of the accelerator is expected to exceed 5 × 1034 cm−2 s−1, five times more than the original design value. [...]

Development and performance of a fast timing micro-pattern gaseous detector (FTM) for future collider experiments and medical diagnostics / Maggi, M (INFN, Bari) ; Pellecchia, A (INFN, Bari ; Bari U.) ; Ranieri, A (Bari U.) ; Roskas, C (Gent U.) ; Sharma, A (CERN) ; Tytgat, M (Gent U.) ; Vai, I (Bergamo U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Verwilligen, P (INFN, Bari)
The fast timing MPGD is a micro-pattern gaseous detector conceived for achieving sub-nanosecond time resolution while maintaining the ability to instrument large areas in high-rate environments; applications of such technology are perspected in high-energy physics experiments at future colliders and medical diagnostics with time-of-flight methods. The work presented is a set of systematic studies carried on an FTM prototype on the performance of GEM foils coated with resistive DLC films, whose development is essential for the FTM operation. First GEM measurements at WEST and perspectives for fast electrons and heavy impurities transport studies in tokamaks / WEST Team Collaboration
Soft X-ray (SXR) radiation emitted from tokamak plasmas contains very useful information about plasma stability, shape and impurity content, all key parameters to improve plasma performance. In the deuterium-tritium phase of ITER, the high neutron fluxes, gamma and hard X-ray emission will constitute too harsh an environment to permit the use of classical semiconductor detectors. [...]

Performance studies of MicroMegas for the ATLAS experiment / Iodice, M (INFN, Rome3) /MAMMA
The performance of MicroMegas (MM) has been extensivelystudied during several test beam campaigns with high energy particlebeams at CERN up to the year 2012, and more recently (June 2013)with electron beams at DESY. Main objectives of the tests were todemonstrate that the requirements could be achieved for the upgradeof the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer, where the MicroMegas will be mounted(along with small-strip Thin Gap Chambers — sTGC) on the New SmallWheel for forward muon detection.
