The sensing elements of the dosimeter are P-doped optical fibers, which were proven to be excellent candidates for dosimetry applications. [...]

Point or distributed optical fiber (OF)-based dosimeters can exploit the observed linear dependence of the radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) at 1550 nm in phosphosilicate OFs to monitor the total ionizing dose (TID). The temperature dependence of the radiation sensitivity coefficients at 1550 nm (expressed in dB km$^{-1}$ Gy$^{-1}$) of three phosphorus-doped single-mode OFs has been investigated between -80 °C and 300 °C for TID ranging from 1 Gy to 1 kGy(SiO$_2$). We demonstrate the feasibility of resetting and reusing dosimeters exploiting the measurement of the infrared radiation-induced attenuation (IR-RIA) in phosphosilicate optical fibers (OFs) to provide point or distributed dose measurements in radiation environments. To bleach the room temperature stable IR-RIA, we used the photobleaching (PB) phenomenon. [...]

LUMINA, a fiber-based dosimeter, exploiting the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) phenomenon, has been operational inside the International Space Station (ISS) since August 2021. We discuss in this article its capability to detect the possible signatures of recent solar particle events (SPEs) through the related increase of the dose rate (DR) radiation level within the ISS. We evaluate the temperature effect on the X-ray radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of differently doped silica fibers obtained via the sol-gel route. Previous investigations showed that these optical materials exhibit interesting dosimetry properties, such as very good detection capabilities and linear response over a large range of dose rate. We investigated the online radiation-induced attenuation of two single-mode optical fibers (OFs) that were X-rays irradiated with doses up to 100 kGy(SiO$_{2}$) at room temperature at 10.7 Gy/s. One of the two samples was doped only with phosphorous, whereas the other was codoped with phosphorous and cerium. [...]

The potential of fiber-based sensors to monitor the fluence of atmospheric neutrons is evaluated through accelerated tests at the TRIUMF Neutron Facility (TNF) (BC, Canada), offering a flux approximatively 10$^9$ higher than the reference spectrum observed under standard conditions in New York City, USA. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) at 1625 nm of a phosphorus-doped radiation sensitive optical fiber is shown to linearly increase with neutron fluence, allowing an in situ and easy monitoring of the neutron flux and fluence at this facility. We systematically explore the suitability of two radiation-sensitive multimode optical fibers (OFs) with either P or GeP-doped cores to serve as the sensing elements in point or distributed dosimeters. To this end, we measured the dependences of their spectral radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) in the visible and near-infrared (near-IR) domain (400–2100 nm) up to total ionizing dose (TID) of 5 kGy(SiO2) while varying the irradiation temperature from −80 °C to +80 °C and the dose rate between 1 mGy(SiO2)/s and 10 Gy(SiO2)/s. This work focuses on the effects of high dose ionizing radiation, up to 10 MGy(SiO$_2$), on P-doped multimode optical fibers (OF) at different irradiation temperatures. The investigation is based on two complementary experimental techniques: radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). [...]
