A first prototype of C6 D6 total-energy detector with SiPM readout for neutron capture time-of-flight experiments / n_TOF Collaboration
Low efficiency total-energy detectors (TEDs) are one of the main tools for neutron capture cross section measurements utilizing the time-of-flight (TOF) technique. State-of-the-art TEDs are based on a C6 D6 liquid-scintillation cell optically coupled to a fast photomultiplier tube. [...]

SiPM applications in positron emission tomography: toward ultimate PET time-of-flight resolution / Lecoq, P (CERN ; Valencia, Polytechnic U.) ; Gundacker, S (CERN ; U. Milan (main) ; RWTH Aachen U.)
The development of PET/MRI multimodality, requiring magnetic field immunity of the photodetectors associated with an increased demand for time-of-flight capabilities with a strong impact on effective PET sensitivity and image quality, has pushed the medical imaging community to progressively replace photomultipliers, traditionally used in PET scanners, by solid-state photodetectors, avalanche diodes (APD) and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Recent years have seen spectacular progresses in the performances of SiPMs, in terms of photodetection efficiency (PDE), noise and cross talk reduction, timing performance, etc., not mentioning their availability in a large variety of dimensions and packages, as single photodetectors, but also linear arrays and matrices of different sizes [...]

The Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) sensor is replacing the extensive use of the Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) in fast timing applications. These photo-sensors can be applied in different fields such as medical imaging systems like Positron Emission Tomography (PET), LIDAR technologies or High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments. [...]

Pushing Cherenkov PET with BGO via coincidence time resolution classification and correction / Kratochwil, Nicolaus (CERN ; Vienna U. ; nicolaus.kratochwil@cern.ch) ; Gundacker, Stefan (CERN ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Lecoq, Paul (CERN) ; Auffray, Etiennette (CERN)
Bismuth germanate (BGO) shows good properties for positron emission tomography (PET) applications, but was substituted by the development of faster crystals like lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) for time-of-flight PET (TOF-PET). Recent improvements in silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and fast readout electronics make it possible to access the Cherenkov photon signal produced upon 511 keV interaction, which makes BGO a cost-effective candidate for TOF-PET. On the way to the 10 ps time-of-flight PET challenge / Lecoq, P (CERN)
There is a consensus for gathering the multidisciplinary academic and industrial medical imaging community around the ambitious challenge to develop a 10 ps Time-of-Flight PET scanner (TOFPET). The goal is to reduce the radiation dose (currently 5–25 mSv for whole-body PET/CT) and/or scan time (currently > 10 min) by an order of magnitude, with a significant gain in the patient comfort and cost per exam (currently in the range of 1000 € per scan). The field of detector readout electronics for precise timing has experienced a remarkable surge of interest due to its diverse range of applications in nuclear medicine such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET), High Energy Physics (HEP), Time-of-Flight (ToF) mass spectrometry and many other fields. This growth can be attributed to rapid advancements in photodetectors, particularly the silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), which has demonstrated exceptional suitability for these applications, owing to its ability to generate signals with unprecedentedly fast rise times. DOI estimation through signal arrival time distribution: a theoretical description including proof of concept measurements / Loignon-Houle, Francis (Sherbrooke U.) ; Gundacker, Stefan (CERN ; Milan Bicocca U.) ; Toussaint, Maxime (Sherbrooke U.) ; Camirand Lemyre, Félix (Toronto U., Math. Dept.) ; Auffray, Etiennette (CERN) ; Fontaine, Réjean (Sherbrooke U. ; IPP, Canada) ; Charlebois, Serge A (Sherbrooke U. ; IPP, Canada) ; Lecoq, Paul (CERN ; GACE-ICMUV) ; Lecomte, Roger (Sherbrooke U.)
The challenge to reach 10 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) in time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) is triggering major efforts worldwide, but timing improvements of scintillation detectors will remain elusive without depth-of-interaction (DOI) correction in long crystals. Nonetheless, this momentum opportunely brings up the prospect of a fully time-based DOI estimation since fast timing signals intrinsically carry DOI information, even with a traditional single-ended readout.
