Neopterin formation through radical scavenging of superoxide by the macrophage synthesised antioxidant 7,8-dihydroneopterin / Baxter-Parker, Gregory (Canterbury U.) ; Prebble, Hannah M (Canterbury U.) ; Cross, Sean (Canterbury U.) ; Steyn, Nina (Canterbury U.) ; Shchepetkina, Anastasia (Canterbury U.) ; Hock, Barry D (Otago U.) ; Cousins, Andrew (Unlisted, NZ) ; Gieseg, Steven P (CERN)
Clinical measurement of neopterin has been extensively used as a marker of inflammation but the in vivo mechanism generating neopterin is poorly understood. Neopterin is described as the oxidation product of 7,8-dihydroneopterin, a potent antioxidant generated by monocyte/macrophages in response to interferon-γ. [...]

Changes in plasma amino acid profiles, growth performance and intestinal antioxidant capacity of piglets following increased consumption of methionine as its hydroxy analogue / Li, Hao (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Wan, Haifeng (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Mercier, Yves (CERN) ; Zhang, Xiaoling (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Wu, Caimei (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Wu, Xiuqun (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Tang, Li (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Che, Lianqiang (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Lin, Yan (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) ; Xu, Shengyu (Yaan, Sichuan Agric. U.) et al.
The aim of the present study was to determine whether early weaning-induced growth retardation could be attenuated by increased consumption of methionine as DL-methionine (DLM) or DL-2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutyrate (HMTBA) in both lactating sows and weaned piglets. Therefore, diets containing DLM and HMTBA at 25\% of the total sulphur-containing amino acids (AA) present in the control (CON) diet were fed to lactating sows and weaned piglets and their responses were evaluated. How do organic vapors contribute to new-particle formation? / Donahue, Neil M (Carnegie Mellon U. (main)) ; Ortega, Ismael K (Helsinki U.) ; Chuang, Wayne (Carnegie Mellon U. Highly oxidised organic vapors can effectively stabilize sulphuric acid in heteronuclear clusters and drive new-particle formation. We present quantum chemical calculations of cluster stability, showing that multifunctional species can stabilize sulphuric acid and also present additional polar functional groups for subsequent cluster growth. Elemental composition and clustering behaviour of α-pinene oxidation products for different oxidation conditions / Praplan, A P (Helsinki U.) ; Schobesberger, S (Helsinki U.) ; Bianchi, F (PSI, Villigen ; Zurich, ETH) ; Rissanen, M P (Helsinki U.) ; Ehn, M (Helsinki U.) ; Jokinen, T (Helsinki U.) ; Junninen, H (Helsinki U.) ; Adamov, A (Helsinki U.) ; Amorim, A (SIM, University of Lisbon ; Beira Interior U., Covilha) ; Dommen, J (PSI, Villigen) et al.
This study presents the difference between oxidised organic compounds formed by α-pinene oxidation under various conditions in the CLOUD environmental chamber: (1) pure ozonolysis (in the presence of hydrogen as hydroxyl radical (OH) scavenger) and (2) OH oxidation (initiated by nitrous acid (HONO) photolysis by ultraviolet light) in the absence of ozone. We discuss results from three Atmospheric Pressure interface Time-of-Flight (APi-TOF) mass spectrometers measuring simultaneously the composition of naturally charged as well as neutral species (via chemical ionisation with nitrate). Laser ablated surface engineering: from discovery to machine application / Valizadeh, R (Daresbury) ; Malyshev, O b (Daresbury) ; Sian, T (Daresbury ; U. Manchester (main)) ; Colligon, J S (Daresbury) ; Li, Q (U. Liverpool (main)) ; Perrie, W (U. Liverpool (main))
In the past few years we have established that Laser Ablation Surface Engineering (LASE) is a very effective way of producing surfaces which have Secondary Electron yields (SEY) < 1. These can be achieved with a variety of laser pulse durations from nano- to pico seconds. [...]
