A Novel Diagnostics of Ultrashort Electron Bunches Based on Detection of Coherent Radiation from Bunched Electron Beam in an Undulator / Saldin, Evgeny L ; Schneidmiller, Evgeny A ; Yurkov, Mikhail V
We propose a new method for measurements of the longitudinal profile of 100 femtosecond electron bunches for X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs). The method is based on detection of coherent undulator radiation produced by modulated electron beam. [...]

Attosecond X-ray Source for Light-Triggered Time-Resolved Experiments Associated with the X-ray SASE FEL / Saldin, Evgeny L ; Schneidmiller, Evgeny A ; Yurkov, Mikhail V
We propose a technique for the production of attosecond X-ray pulses which is based on the use of X-ray SASE FEL combined with a femtosecond laser system. A few-cycle optical pulse from a Ti:sapphire laser interacts with the electron beam in a two-period undulator resonant to 800 nm wavelength and produces energy modulation within a slice of the electron bunch. [...]

Recent Results from and Future Plans for the VISA II SASE FEL / Andonian, Gerard ; Agustsson, Ronald ; Babzien, Marcus ; Ben-Zvi, Ilan ; Boscolo, Ilario ; Cialdi, Simone ; Ferrario, Massimo ; Flacco, Alessandro Federico ; Frigola, Pedro ; Huang, Jung Y et al.
As the promise of X-ray Free Electron Lasers (FEL) comes close to realization, the creation and diagnosis of ultra-short pulses is of great relevance in the SASE FEL (Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission) community. The VISA II (Visible to Infrared SASE Amplifier) experiment entails the use of a chirped electron beam to drive a high gain SASE FEL at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) in Brookhaven National Labs (BNL). Scheme for Generation of Single 100 GW 300-as Pulse in the X-ray SASE FEL with the Use of a Few Cycles Optical Pulse from Ti : sapphire Laser System / Saldin, Evgeny L ; Schneidmiller, Evgeny A ; Yurkov, Mikhail V
Femtosecond optical pulse interacts with the electron beam in the two-period undulator and produces energy modulation within a slice of the electron bunch. Then the electron beam enters the first part of the X-ray undulator and produces SASE radiation with 100 MW-level power. [...]

Analytic Model of Harmonic Generation in the Low-Gain FEL Regime / Penn, Gregory
Harmonic generation using free electron lasers (FELs) requires two undulators: the first generates energy modulation through the inverse FEL effect; the second undulator uses the subsequently bunched beam to radiate at a higher harmonic. These processes are currently evaluated using extensive calculations or simulation codes which can be slow to evaluate and difficult to set up. [...]

Coherent Transition Radiation to Measure the SLAC Electron Bunch Length / Muggli, Patric ; Barnes, Christopher ; Hogan, Mark ; Ischebeck, Rasmus ; Krejcik, Patrick ; Schlarb, Holger ; Siemann, Robert ; Walz, Dieter
Ultrashort electron bunches are now available at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and are use mainly to produce short bursts of x-rays in a magnetic undulator and for plasma wakefield acceleration experiments. The shortest bunches have an rms longitudinal width of ˜10 microns, and a peak current of about 30 kA. [...]

Sub-Terawatt Mode of Operation of X-ray SASE FEL / Saldin, Evgeny L ; Schneidmiller, Evgeny A ; Yurkov, Mikhail V
Application of dispersion section in combination with undulator tapering is an effective tool for achieving extremely high output power of XFEL. In the first part of the undulator the gap is fixed, and amplification process is developed as in usual SASE FEL. [...]

Harmonic Operation of the SDUV HGHG-FEL / Dai, Z M ; Li, D G ; Xu, Y ; Zhao, X F ; Zhao, Z
In this paper, we study the harmonic operation of the SDUV HGHG-FEL (Phase-I), which consists of 160MeV linac, and two undulators separated by a dispersion section. A laser light at 352nm is injected into the first undulator to modulate the energy of the electron beam. [...]
