The results of pion (\pi/sup +or-/) production from the CERN synchrocyclotron with /sup 12/C beams of 60, 75 and 85 A MeV on /sup 7 /Li, /sup 12/C and /sup 208/Pb are investigated theoretically. The energy region is particularly interesting because it lies below the free nucleon-nucleon threshold of 290 MeV for the production of pions. [...]

The total cross sections of /sup 4/He, /sup 6/Li, /sup 7/Li, /sup 9 /Be, /sup 12/C and /sup 32/S for positive and negative pions have been measured in the energy range 80 to 260 MeV in a transmission experiment. Coulomb corrections were applied using real parts of the forward nuclear amplitudes as determined from dispersion relations. [...]

It is shown that /sup 12/C 4.44 MeV gamma -rays result from pi /sup -/ absorption at rest in /sup 16/O. The /sup 12/C recoil momentum distribution was determined from the Doppler-broadening and compared with (p, p alpha ) measurements on /sup 16/O. [...]

Narrow Sigma -hypernuclear states / Gal, A ; Dover, C B
It is shown that the spin-isospin dependence of low-energy Sigma N to Lambda N conversion leads to substantial quenching of nuclear-matter estimates of the widths of some Sigma -hypernuclear states produced in (K/sup -/, pi ) reactions, to a level below 10 MeV. The estimated widths compare favorably with those of the Sigma -hypernuclear peaks recently observed at CERN for /sup 7/Li, /sup 9/Be, and /sup 12/C. [...]

Large-area position-sensitive neutron counters with subnanosecond time resolution have been used to study the ( pi /sup -/,2n) reaction with a resolution comparable to or better than the existing ( pi /sup + /,2p) data.
