As part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator upgrades foreseen by the high luminosity-LHC project, the CERN 11 T program is aimed at replacing standard LHC Nb-Ti main dipole magnets, operating with a bore field of 8.3 T, with pairs of shorter Nb$_3$Sn dipole magnets with a bore field of 11 T and the same total integrated field, thus providing space for additional collimators in the dispersion suppressor region. At the time of the submission of this paper, six single-aperture and two double-aperture short models have been fabricated and tested. [...]

Windability Tests of Nb$_3$Sn Rutherford Cables for HL-LHC and FCC / Pulikowski, D (CERN ; West Pomeranian U. of Tech., Szczecin) ; Lackner, F (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Savary, F (CERN) ; Tommasini, D (CERN) ; Pajor, M (West Pomeranian U. of Tech., Szczecin)
In the framework of the development of high field magnets made of Nb$_3$Sn superconductors for projects like the high luminosity upgrade of the large hadron collider (HL-LHC) and FCC studies, it is necessary to refine the understanding of the winding process and its impact of the overall mechanical integrity of the conductor. The mechanical behavior during winding of the unreacted Rutherford-type Nb$_3$Sn cables has been studied experimentally. [...]

Progress in the Development of the Nb$_3$Sn MQXFB Quadrupole for the HiLumi Upgrade of the LHC / Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ambrosio, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Apollinari, Giorgio (Fermilab) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Bordini, Bernardo (CERN) ; Bourcey, Nicolas (CERN) ; Duarte Ramos, Delio (CERN) ; Ferracin, Paolo (LBL, Berkeley) ; Fiscarelli, Lucio (CERN) ; Feher, Sandor (Fermilab) et al.
The high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires new high field and large-aperture quadrupole magnets for the low-beta inner triplets (MQXF). With a nominal operating gradient of 132.2 T/m in a 150 mm aperture and a conductor peak field of 11.3 T, the new quadrupole magnets are based on Nb3Sn superconducting technology. [...]

Characterization of the Mechanical Properties of Nb$_3$Sn Coils / Fernández, José Luis Rudeiros (CERN) ; Perez, Juan Carlos (CERN) ; Ferradas Troitino, Salvador (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Grosclaude, Philippe (CERN) ; Crouvizier, Mickael D (CERN) ; Langeslag, Stefanie (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN)
The 11 T magnet and other high-field magnets in the framework of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project are based on epoxy resin impregnated Nb3Sn coils. This paper presents the development of an experimental measurement setup, and associated methodology for the determination of the mechanical properties in compression of epoxy resin impregnated Nb3Sn coils. The next generation particle accelerators will need to increase by an order of magnitude the center-of-mass energy: a viable solution is a 100 TeV circular collider, temporarily called Future Circular Collider (FCC). To achieve this goal, a new generation of double aperture superconducting magnets, capable of generating a high quality, stable 16 T magnetic field in a 50 mm bore is being developed. [...]

Construction and Test of the Enhanced Racetrack Model Coil, First CERN R&D; Magnet for the FCC / Perez, J C (CERN) ; Bajko, M (CERN) ; Bourcey, N (CERN) ; Bordini, B (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Troitiño, S Ferradás (CERN) ; Gautheron, E (CERN) ; Guinchard, M (CERN) ; Bermudez, S Izquierdo (CERN) ; Mangearotti, F (CERN) et al.
Racetrack model coils (RMC) have been built at CERN during the past decade, as an R&D; tool to qualify conductors and technologies developed for high field superconducting accelerator magnets (Perez et al. , 2016). RMC, assembled in a dipole magnet configuration, proved to be an efficient instrument reducing cost and feed-back time while developing new magnets. [...]

Magneto-Mechanical Optimization of Cross-Sections for $\textrm{cos}(\theta)$ Accelerator Magnets / Vallone, G (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Auchmann, B (PSI, Villigen ; CERN) ; Maciejewski, M (ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Smajic, J (ETH, Zurich (main))
The cross-section design of cos(θ)superconducting magnets is historically developed in a two-step process: initially, the coil geometry is defined on the basis of magnetic optimizations; then, the structure is designed around the coil. The first step searches for the best coil cross-section maximizing the magnetic field, margin, field quality and conductor efficiency. [...]

Effect of Applied Compressive Stress and Impregnation Material on Internal Strain and Stress State in Nb$_3$Sn Rutherford Cable Stacks / Wolf, Felix (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Lorentzon, Marcus (CERN) ; Katzer, Balduin (CERN) ; Hofmann, Michael (Forschungsreaktor Munich) ; Gan, Weimin ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Schoerling, Daniel (CERN) ; Tommasini, Davide (CERN) ; Savary, Frederic (CERN) et al.
The Nb3Sn superconductor in accelerator magnets must resist high mechanical stresses. In order to better understand the effect of the coil impregnation system on the stresses exerted on the strain-sensitive Nb3Sn superconductor, we have measured the elastic strain evolution in the conductor constituents under externally applied loads. Advanced Nb$_{3}$Sn conductors tested in a racetrack coil configuration for the 11T dipole project / Bajas, Hugues (CERN) ; Bajko, Marta (CERN) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Rochepault, Etienne (CERN) ; Lorenzo Gomez, Jose V (CERN) ; Chiuchiolo, Antonella (CERN) ; Perez, Juan Carlos (CERN)
Within the 11T dipole magnet conductor development for the high-luminosity LHC upgrade, two types of Nb3 Sn cable based on the powder-in-tube (PIT) and the Rod and Restack processes (RRP) are tested in racetrack configuration in the short model coil (SMC) magnets. In 2016 and 2017, the performances of three different coils wound with 40-strand cables, one made of OST RRP 132/169 and two of PIT 120 strands have been measured using the SMC structure. [...]
