Liquid argon Time Projection Chambers (LAr-TPCs) are among the most promising detectors for the study of neutrino oscillations. They are composed by a multi-wire drift chamber to collect the charge and a photodetection system to detect the scintillation light, both produced by ionizing charged particles that cross the argon volume. [...]

A particle detection system that exploits the scintillation light produced by ionizing particles in liquid argon (LAr) has been assembled at CERN. The system is based on 10 large-area photomultiplier tubes (PMT) immersed in a 1500-liter dewar filled with liquid argon and equipped with an extendible feed-through and mechanical support for an alpha source (241Am). A particle detector that exploits Liquid Argon scintillation light / Babicz, M (Cracow, INP ; CERN) ; Diwan, M (Brookhaven) ; Fava, A (Fermilab) ; Guglielmi, A (INFN, Padua) ; Ketchum, W (Fermilab) ; Meng, G (INFN, Padua) ; Menegolli, A (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.) ; Nessi, M (CERN) ; Pietropaolo, F (CERN ; INFN, Padua) ; Raselli, G L (INFN, Pavia ; Pavia U.) et al.
A number of innovative experiments dedicated to neutrino oscillations and rare event physics, such as direct searches for dark matter particles or neutrinoless double beta decays, are using liquefied noble-gases, particularly Liquid Argon (LAr), as detection media. Among many advantages of noble liquids, from the detection point of view, the most important ones are high scintillation and ionisation yields, possible long drift paths of ionisation electrons and feasible large detector masses. A Muon Collider represents a promising possibility to combine the high energy and luminosity of hadron machines with very precise measurements of lepton colliders. The main challenges, that impact both the machine and detector design, arise from the short muon lifetime and the harsh Beam-induced Background (BIB). [...]

A prototype of a dual-readout calorimeter using brass capillary tubes surrounding scintillating and clear plastic optical fibres was tested using beams of particles with energies between 10 and 100 GeV produced by the CERN SPS. The scope of the test was to characterise the performance of the tube-based detector response to positrons in terms of linearity, energy resolution, and lateral granularity. [...]
