The Quench Heater Discharge Power Supplies (HDS) are magnet protection devices installed in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that, upon detection of a magnet quench, release energy into strip heaters that are in thermal contact with the superconducting coils, inducing a resistive transition all along the coils. The new HDS design for protection of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Inner Triplet magnets calls for a more advanced design with up-to-date components resulting in a high reliability of the HDS units. The novel Coupling-Loss-Induced-Quench (CLIQ) concept will be part of the quench protection system of the superconducting Inner Triplet magnets of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) upgrade at CERN. The High Luminosity Upgrade of the LHC [1] will incorporate a new generation of superconducting elements such as high field superconducting magnets based on Nb$_3$Sn conductors and MgB$_2$ high temperature superconducting links for magnet powering. The proper protection and diagnostics of those elements require the development of a new generation of integrated quench detection and data acquisition systems as well as novel methods for quench detection. The High Luminosity upgrade for the Large Hadron Collider LHC (HL-LHC) requires new Nb$_3$Sn superconducting magnets and it triggers a development of novel hardware for the quench detection system (QDS) based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) digital platform and a number of individually isolated analogue front-ends. Galvanic insulation has been implemented downstream the analogue to digital convertors to eliminate a usage of analogue isolation amplifiers. [...]

To further improve the performance and reliability of the quench detection system (QDS) for main quadrupole magnets in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), there is a planned upgrade of the system during the long shutdown period of the LHC in 2019-2020. While improving the already existing functionalities of quench detection for quadrupole magnets and field-bus data acquisition, the enhanced QDS will incorporate new functionalities to strengthen and improve the system operation and maintenance.
