Magnets for medical applications
/ Pivi, Mauro (speaker) (MedAustron)
This lecture is an overview of Magnets for Medical Applications using Particle Accelerator.
In the first part of the lecture we will give an introduction to different accelerators employed in hadron therapy to cure cancer as cyclotrons and synchrotrons. in the second part of the lecture, we will present the MedAustron experience including some of the aspects related to commissioning with beam and operating magnets for clinical operations.
The MedAustron Particle Therapy Accelerator located in Austria delivers proton beams in the energy range 60-250 MeV and carbon ions 120-400 MeV/n for tumour treatment in three irradiation rooms. [...]

Characterization of Hysteretic Behavior of a FeCo Magnet for the Design of a Novel Ion Gantry
/ Felcini, E (CNAO, Milan) ; Pullia, M (CNAO, Milan) ; Sabbatini, L (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Vannozzi, A (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Trigilio, A (LNF, Dafne Light) ; Pivi, M (MedAustron) ; De Cesaris, I (MedAustron) ; Rossi, L (INFN, Milan ; Milan U.) ; Prioli, M (LASA, Segrate) ; Schwarz, P (CERN) et al.
In the framework of the euroSIG project and within an international collaboration between CNAO, CERN, INFN, and MedAustron, the design of a novel gantry for hadron therapy based on superconducting magnets and a downstream scanning system has been undertaken. The choice of placing the scanning system downstream of the last superconducting dipole plays a crucial role in the overall layout of the gantry, having a direct impact on its radius, weight, and cost. Implementation of a Tune Sweep Slow Extraction with Constant Optics at MedAustron
/ Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; De Franco, Andrea (QST, Rokkasho Fusion Inst.) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Kuehteubl, Florian (EBG MedAustron) ; Pivi, Mauro (MedAustron) ; Prokopovich, Dale (MedAustron) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
Conventional slow extraction driven by a tune sweep perturbs the optics and changes the presentation of the beam separatrix to the extraction septum during the spill. The constant optics slow extraction (COSE) technique, recently developed and deployed operationally at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron to reduce beam loss on the extraction septum, was implemented at MedAustron to facilitate extraction with a tune sweep of operational beam quality. The delivery of clinical beams for patient treatment at the MedAustron Ion Therapy Center requires extensive accelerator performance verifications, which are performed in several steps. In first instance, the key parameters of the beam delivered to the irradiation rooms (beam position, spot size, energy and intensity) are verified via measurements performed with beam diagnostic devices distributed along the accelerator. The synchrotron-based MedAustron accelerator in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, has seen the first clinical beam and has been certified as a medical accelerator in December 2016. This represented a major milestone for the facility whose original design originated more than a decade ago and construction started four years ago. [...]

Control of intrabunch dynamics at CERN SPS ring using 3.2 GS/s digital feedback channel
/ Rivetta, C (SLAC) ; Fox, J D (SLAC) ; Cesaratto, J M (SLAC) ; Dusatko, J (SLAC) ; Pivi, M (SLAC) ; Pollock, K (SLAC) ; Turgut, O (SLAC) ; Bartosik, H (CERN) ; Hofle, W (CERN) ; Kotzian, G (CERN) et al.
The feedback control of intra-bunch instabilities driven by electron-cloud or strong head-tail interaction requires bandwidth sufficient to sense the vertical position and apply correction fields to multiple sections of a nanosecondscale bunch. These requirements impose challenges and limits in the design of the feedback channel. [...]

In this paper, we will describe some of the recent experimental measurements [1, 2, 3] performed at CESRTA [4], and the supporting simulations, which probe the interaction of the electron cloud with the stored beam. These experiments have been done over a wide range of beam energies, emittances, bunch currents, and fill patterns, to gather sufficient information to be able to fully characterize the beam-electron-cloud interaction and validate the simulation programs.
