We evaluate the temperature effect on the X-ray radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of differently doped silica fibers obtained via the sol-gel route. Previous investigations showed that these optical materials exhibit interesting dosimetry properties, such as very good detection capabilities and linear response over a large range of dose rate. LUMINA, a fiber-based dosimeter, exploiting the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) phenomenon, has been operational inside the International Space Station (ISS) since August 2021. We discuss in this article its capability to detect the possible signatures of recent solar particle events (SPEs) through the related increase of the dose rate (DR) radiation level within the ISS. The optical-fiber-based dosimeter of the LUMINA project was deployed in August 2021 in the International Space Station in the framework of the Alpha mission. The sensing elements of the dosimeter are P-doped optical fibers, which were proven to be excellent candidates for dosimetry applications. [...]

The potential of fiber-based sensors to monitor the fluence of atmospheric neutrons is evaluated through accelerated tests at the TRIUMF Neutron Facility (TNF) (BC, Canada), offering a flux approximatively 10$^9$ higher than the reference spectrum observed under standard conditions in New York City, USA. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) at 1625 nm of a phosphorus-doped radiation sensitive optical fiber is shown to linearly increase with neutron fluence, allowing an in situ and easy monitoring of the neutron flux and fluence at this facility. Simplified SEE sensitivity screening for COTS components in space

We introduce an approach aimed at prescreening COTS components according to their single-event effect (SEE) sensitivity for space missions in which a complete characterization of their individual response to protons and heavy ions is not feasible due to cost and time constraints. The method is applied to a set of SRAM memories for single-event upset (SEU) and single-event latchup (SEL) and the resulting expected SEE rates are compared with traditional approaches and in-flight data for a low-earth orbit polar and a geostationary orbit.
