During the last 10 years, the $^{3}$He crisis has brought to the development of new thermal neutron detection technologies and one of them is based on gas electron multiplier (GEM) principle. To detect neutrons, standard triple GEM detectors are usually coupled with a suitable converter, such as a $^{10}$B$_{4}$C, where neutrons are converted via the nuclear reaction $^{10}$B(n,$\alpha $)$^{7}$Li. Hadron therapy is an advanced radiation modality for treating cancer, which currently uses protons and carbon ions. Hadrons allow for a highly conformal dose distribution to the tumour, minimising the detrimental side-effects due to radiation received by healthy tissues. [...]

Testing the Properties of Beam-Dose Monitors for VHEE-FLASH Radiation Therapy / Bateman, Joseph (JAI, UK) ; Burrows, Philip (JAI, UK) ; Corsini, Roberto (CERN) ; Dosanjh, Manjit (CERN) ; Dyks, Luke (JAI, UK) ; Farabolini, Wilfrid (CERN) ; Gerbershagen, Alexander (CERN) ; Heracleous, Natalie (CERN) ; Korysko, Pierre (CERN) ; Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN) et al.
Very High Energy Electrons (VHEE) of 50 - 250 MeV are an attractive choice for FLASH radiation therapy (RT). Before VHEE-FLASH RT can be considered for clinical use, a reliable dosimetric and beam monitoring system needs to be developed, able to measure the dose delivered to the patient in real-time and cut off the beam in the event of a machine fault to prevent overdosing the patient. The study of Soft X-ray emission can be a source of fundamental information, particularly for what concerns tokamaks and plasma diagnostics, but also in general in the fields of high energy and nuclear physics. Detection systems based on Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) technology can be of particular use in the context of X-ray analyses, being relatively low cost while maintaining good spatial and temporal resolution and capability to sustain high counting rates (up to MHz/mm2). New high count rate detectors are needed for future spallation neutron sources where large areas and high efficiency (>50%) detectors are envisaged. In this framework, GEM is one of the explored detector technologies since they feature good spatial resolution (<0.5 cm) and timing properties, have excellent rate capability (MHz/mm2) and can cover large areas (some m2) at low cost.
