A non-invasive bidirectional beam profile monitor using beam-induced fluorescence upon a thin sheet of gas has been developed at the Cockcroft Institute in collaboration with CERN and GSI. This device is particularly suited to the Electron Beam Test Stand, and as such, a bespoke gas injection has been optimized for this specific use-case to provide diagnostics unavailable to conventional scintillator screens. An electron beam test stand has been designed and constructed at CERN as part of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, in collaboration with the ARIES project, to test components related to the Hollow Electron Lens (HL-LHC) and the GSI Space Charge Compensation Electron Lens (ARIES). This comprehensive test facility incorporates normal conducting solenoid magnets, including horizontal and vertical correctors, which generate fields of fractional Tesla magnitude. [...]

Radiation levels from a beam gas curtain instrument at the LHC at CERN / Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Sequeiro, Cristina (CERN) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ady, Marton (CERN) ; Sedlacek, Ondrej (CERN) ; Veness, Raymond (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN)
A prototype Beam Gas Curtain (BGC) monitor was installed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to provide 2D images of the transverse beam profile during the ongoing Run 3 (2022 to date) and in view of the High Luminosity LHC upgrade (HL-LHC). By design, the BGC operation generates collisions between the beam particles and an injected gas jet proportionally to the beam intensity and the gas density, possibly causing radiation-induced issues to the downstream LHC equipment. [...]

Beam gas curtain monitor: Vacuum studies for LHC integration and operation / Castro Sequeiro, C (CERN) ; Ady, M (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, G (CERN) ; Chatzigeorgiou, N (CERN) ; Churchman, A R (CERN) ; Kersevan, R (CERN) ; Lefevre, T (CERN) ; Mazzoni, S (CERN) ; Pigny, G (CERN) ; Rossi, A (CERN) et al.
A beam gas curtain (BGC) monitor has been designed to obtain information about the relative position between the LHC proton beam and the hollow electron lens electron beam through a minimally invasive process. Its working principle relies on intersecting the path of both beams with a supersonic gas curtain, introduced transversely into the LHC beamline, to produce a fluorescence signal. [...]

Beam-induced backgrounds measured in the ATLAS detector during local gas injection into the LHC beam vacuum / ATLAS Collaboration
Inelastic beam-gas collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), within a few hundred metres of the ATLAS experiment, are known to give the dominant contribution to beam backgrounds. These are monitored by ATLAS with a dedicated Beam Conditions Monitor (BCM) and with the rate of fake jets in the calorimeters [...]

Optical transition radiation measurements of a high intensity low energy hollow electron beam on electron beam test facility / Sedlacek, Ondrej (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; CERN) ; Rossi, Adriana (CERN) ; Webber-Date, Alexander (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Churchman, Ashley (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Sequeiro, Cristina (CERN) ; Schneider, Gerhard (CERN) ; Zhang, Hao (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Liverpool U.) ; Sidorowski, Krystian (CERN) ; Ady, Marton (CERN) et al.
Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) is commonly used in imaging systems of highly relativistic charged particle beams as the light yield and collection efficiency increase with beam energy. For low beam energies, scintillating screens are typically preferred but they saturate or even get damaged when using a high beam current. [...]

A beam profile monitor using gas jet technology is being designed and manufactured at the Cockcroft Institute for high intensity electron beams. Vacuum chamber conditioning and saturation simulation tool (VacuumCOST): Enabling time-dependent simulations of pressure and NEG sticking in UHV chambers / Henriksen, P L (CERN) ; Ady, M (CERN) ; Kersevan, R (CERN)
Modern particle accelerators, synchrotrons, and other machines requiring UHV frequently make use of NEG coatings to achieve low pressures and resulting high beam stability and lifetime. It is the nature of NEG pumps and coatings, that a limited amount of gas can be pumped before saturation is reached, at which point the NEG must be re-activated to pump efficiently again. [...]
