Technological Improvements in the DARHT II Accelerator Cells / Prichard, Benjamin A ; Barraza, Juan ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Briggs, Richard J ; Chow, Ken ; Fawley, William M ; Genoni, Thomas E ; Henestroza, Enrique ; Hughes, Thomas P ; Kang, Mike et al.
DARHT employs two perpendicular electron Linear Induction Accelerators to produce intense, bremsstrahlung x-ray pulses for flash radiography. The second axis, DARHT II, features an 18 MeV, 2-kA, 2-microsecond accelerator. [...]

The Dynamic Aperture of an Electrostatic Quadrupole Lattice / Celata, C M ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Friedman, Alex ; Grote, D P ; Prost, Lionel ; Seidl, Peter
In heavy-ion-driven inertial fusion accelerator concepts, dynamic aperture is important to the cost of the accelerator, most especially for designs which envision multibeam linacs, where extra clearance for each beam greatly enlarges the transverse scale of the machine. In many designs the low-energy end of such an accelerator uses electrostatic quadrupole focusing. [...]

Beam Energy Scaling of Ion-Induced Electron Yield from K+ Ions Impact on Stainless Steel Surfaces / Kireeff-Covo, Michel ; Baca, David ; Barnard, John J ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Celata, C M ; Cohen, Ronald ; Friedman, Alex ; Grote, D P ; Kwan, Joe W ; Lund, Steven M et al.
The cost of accelerators for heavy-ion inertial fusion energy (HIF) can be reduced by using the smallest possible clearance between the beam and the wall from the beamline. This increases beam loss to the walls, generating ion-induced electrons that could be trapped by beam space charge potential into an "electron cloud," which can cause degradation or loss of the ion beam [...]

Electron and Gas Effects on Intense, Space-Charge Dominated Ion Beams in Magnetic Quadrupoles : Comparison of Experiments and Simulations / Seidl, Peter ; Baca, David ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Cohen, Ronald ; Covo, Michel K ; Friedman, Alex ; Grote, D P ; Lund, Steven M ; Molvik, Arthur ; Vay, Jean-Luc
Accelerators for inertial fusion energy, high-energy density physics and other high intensity applications have an economic incentive to minimize the clearance between the beam edge and the aperture wall. This increases the risk from electron clouds and gas desorbed from walls [...]

Initial Results on Neutralized Drift Compression Experiments (NDCX-IA) for High Intensity Ion Beam / Roy, Prabir K ; Anders, Andre ; Baca, David ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Coleman, Joshua E ; Davidson, Ronald C ; Efthimion, Philip ; Eylon, Shmuel ; Gilson, Erik P ; Grant Logan, B et al.
Ion beam neutralization and compression experiments are designed to determine the feasibility of using compressed high intensity ion beams for high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments and for inertial fusion power. To quantitatively ascertain the various mechanisms and methods for beam compression, the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment (NDCX) facility is being constructed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Experiments Studying Desorbed Gas and Electron Clouds in Ion Accelerators / Molvik, Arthur ; Baca, David ; Barnard, John J ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Celata, C M ; Cohen, Ronald ; Covo, Michel K ; Friedman, Alex ; Lund, Steven M ; Seidl, Peter et al.
Electron clouds and gas pressure rise limit the performance of many major accelerator rings. We are studying these issues experimentally with ~1 MeV heavy-ion beams, coordinated with significant efforts in self-consistent simulation and theory.* The experiments use multiple diagnostics, within and between quadrupole magnets, to measure the sources and accumulation of electrons and gas. Optical Faraday Cup for Heavy Ion Beams / Bieniosek, Frank ; Eylon, Shmuel ; Roy, Prabir K ; Yu, Simon
We have been using alumina scintillators for imaging beams in heavy-ion beam fusion experiments in 2 to 4 transverse dimensions.* The scintillator has limitations on lifetime, linearity, and time response. As a possible replacement for the scintillator, we are studying the technique of imaging the beam on a gas cloud. [...]

A Compact High-Brightness Heavy-Ion Injector / Westenskow, Glen ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Grote, D P ; Halaxa, Erni ; Kwan, Joe W
To provide compact high-brightness heavy-ion beams for Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF) accelerators, we have been experimenting with merging multi-beamlets in an injector which uses an RF plasma source. In an 80-kV 20-microsecond experiment, the RF plasma source has produced up to 5 mA of Ar+ in a single beamlet. [...]

A Fast Faraday Cup for the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment / Sefkow, Adam ; Bieniosek, Frank ; Coleman, Joshua E ; Davidson, Ronald C ; Efthimion, Philip ; Eylon, Shmuel ; Gilson, Erik P ; Greenway, Wayne ; Henestroza, Enrique ; Kwan, Joe W et al.
Heavy ion drivers for high energy density physics applications and inertial fusion energy use space-charge-dominated beams which require longitudinal bunch compression in order to achieve sufficiently high beam intensity at the target. The Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment-1A (NDCX-1A) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is used to determine the effective limits of neutralized drift compression. [...]

Gas desorption and electron emission from 1 MeV potassium ion bombardment of stainless steel / Molvik, Arthur W (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore) ; Covo, Michel Kireeff (LBNL Berkeley) ; Bieniosek, Frank M (LBNL Berkeley) ; Prost, Lionel (LBNL Berkeley) ; Seidl, P (LBNL Berkeley) ; Baca, David (LBNL Berkeley) ; Coorey, Adam (LBNL Berkeley) ; Sakumi, Akira (CERN)
Gas desorption and electron emission coefficients were measured for 1 MeV potassium ions incident on stainless steel at grazing angles (between 80° and 88° from normal incidence) using a new gas-electron source diagnostic (GESD). Issues addressed in design and commissioning of the GESD include effects from backscattering of ions at the surface, space-charge limited emission current, and reproducibility of desorption measurements.
