Beam-based commissioning of a novel X-band transverse deflection structure with variable polarization / González Caminal, P (DESY) ; Christie, F (DESY) ; D'Arcy, R (DESY) ; Jaster-Merz, S M (DESY) ; Assmann, R (DESY) ; Burkart, F (DESY) ; Conrad, B (DESY) ; Dinter, H (DESY) ; Foese, M (DESY) ; Herrmann, J (DESY) et al.
Longitudinal electron-beam diagnostics play a critical role in the operation and control of x-ray free-electron lasers, which rely on parameters such as the current profile, the longitudinal phase space, or the slice emittance of the particle distribution. On the one hand, the femtosecond-scale electron bunches produced at these facilities impose stringent requirements on the resolution achievable with the diagnostics. [...]

Dark sector searches based on dielectric laser acceleration / Zimmermann, F (CERN) ; Ferro-Luzzi, M (CERN) ; Jacobsson, R (CERN) ; Ischebeck, R (PSI, Villigen) ; Dadashi, R (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Assmann, R (DESY) ; Mirian, N (DESY) ; Muggli, P (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Franchetti, G (Darmstadt, GSI)
We discuss the beam requirements for indirect searches of dark matter and feebly coupled particles using advanced accelerator concepts. A parameter comparison reveals dielectric laser acceleration as a promising candidate for delivering the needed single-electron beams in the 5-100 GeV energy range or beyond. [...]

Plasma accelerators present one of the most suitable candidates for the development of more compact particle acceleration technologies, yet they still lag behind radiofrequency (RF)-based devices when it comes to beam quality, control, stability and power efficiency. The Horizon 2020-funded project EuPRAXIA (“European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications”) aims to overcome the first three of these hurdles by developing a conceptual design for a first international user facility based on plasma acceleration. Feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in the CERN accelerator complex / UA9 Collaboration
Bent silicon crystals mounted on high-accuracy angular actuators were installed in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and extensively tested to assess the feasibility of crystal-assisted collimation in circular hadron colliders. The adopted layout was exploited and regularly upgraded for about a decade by the UA9 Collaboration. [...]

Chapter 4: High-gradient plasma and laser accelerators / Assmann, R (DESY ; LNF, Dafne Light) ; Gschwendtner, E (CERN) ; Cassou, K (IJCLab, Orsay) ; Corde, S (Ec. Novel high-gradient accelerators have demonstrated acceleration of electrons and positrons with electric field strengths of 1 to > 100 GeV/m. This is about 10 to 1000 times higher than achieved in RF-based accelerators, and as such they have the potential to overcome the limitations associated with RF cavities. [...]

Experimental demonstration of novel beam characterization using a polarizable X-band transverse deflection structure / Marchetti, B (DESY ; European XFEL, Hamburg) ; Grudiev, A (CERN) ; Craievich, P (PSI, Villigen) ; Assmann, R (DESY) ; Braun, H H (PSI, Villigen) ; Catalan Lasheras, N (CERN) ; Christie, F (DESY) ; D'Arcy, R (DESY) ; Fortunati, R (PSI, Villigen) ; Ganter, R (PSI, Villigen) et al.
The PolariX TDS (Polarizable X-Band Transverse Deflection Structure) is an innovative TDS-design operating in the X-band frequency-range. The design gives full control of the streaking plane, which can be tuned in order to characterize the projections of the beam distribution onto arbitrary transverse axes. [...]
