Abstract
| Design, contribution and performance of the PIBETA spectrometer intended for the precise measurement of the pion beta decay, \pi^{+}\to\pi^{0}+e^{+}+\nu_{e}, at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland) are described. The central part of the detector is a 240-module spherical pure CsI calorimeter covering \sim 3\pi sr solid angle. The calorimeter is supplemented with active collimator/beam degrader, an active segmented plastic target, a pair of low-mass cylindrical multiwire chambers, a 20-element cylindrical plastic scintillator hodoscope and cosmic muon plastic veto counters. |
