In her latest blog post, Samira Bouallegue explains how the federal PIPEDA law governs private sector organizations, while provinces like Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta have their own privacy laws. Quebec's laws are the strictest, requiring detailed privacy impact assessments before transferring data outside the province. Businesses must often navigate overlapping federal and provincial regulations to ensure compliance. Samira also highlights upcoming legislation like Bill C-27, which includes the Consumer Privacy Protection Act and the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA). While these laws aim to modernize Canada’s privacy framework, their implementation is still uncertain as they are under review in Parliament. With the rise of artificial intelligence, discussions about AI-specific regulations are increasing, though Canada lacks a comprehensive framework.
