When plates have a chance to firm up before being flipped for trimming they are less likely to sag and warp. There are two main problems with turning plates. The first is the rim may have a slight wobble and if you turn it rim down on the wheel you just repeat the wobble. The second is that plates are fragile. Both the main flat area and the rim. Welcome the ring chuck. Made to be about the size of the inside of the plate this donut shaped ring will both protect the plate and the rim and allow you to turn with the plate base as the guage. Not the rim. Does that make sense? This one is made from clay thrown to shape. It’s kept dry and when I want to use it I just dip the base in water.
