HOW TO ANTICIPATE FORESTS-AT-RISK IN THE AMAZON REGION? A model recently developed by the World Bank in collaboration with the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) can predict where, when and to what extent deforestation is most likely to occur in Brazil‘s Amazon region. The following parameters, among others, are taken into account in the model: - Is the land in public, private or indigenous ownership? - How are global prices for beef and timber, which are important drivers of deforestation, developing? G20 Brasil 2024 has negotiated a set of principles for the #Biodiversity ahead of the #Convention on Biodiversity #COP16 in Columbia. All countries agree to use the G20 format to discuss how to "benefit from robust and coherent policy frameworks that foster trade for bioeconomy products and services, market conditions, sustainable business models, decent jobs, local value creation and private sector and civil society participation".

Conservation works. Across a wide swath of indicators. This article is a fantastic overview of how and why. I’ve just landed in #Brazil to visit our WeForest 🌿 partner projects in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Every time I see our projects up close, they all clearly show the transformative effect of science-based and human-centered #conservation and #restoration. So I love to read the science behind what I see and hear across the ecosystems and communities we work with. We can’t afford to not be investing in high-quality and innovative restoration and conservation around the world. And it would only cost a fraction of our annual subsidies to the fossil fuel industry… “The economic case for investing in conservation is strong. More than half of the world’s GDP, almost $44 trillion, is moderately or highly dependent on nature. By some estimates, a global conservation program would cost between $178 billion and $524 billion. While this may seem like a large sum, it pales in comparison with the $7 trillion spent on fossil fuel subsidies in 2022.”

IMPACTS OF CLIMATE LITIGATION ON IMPROVING AIR QUALITY STANDARDS :: Brazilian newspapers are reporting that São Paulo holds today the unfortunate title of having the world's worst air quality. In fact, some Amazonian capital cities are exhibiting even worse air quality standards. This alarming situation underscores the urgent need for stricter environmental and climate regulations in a scenario where extreme events, such as forest fires, are having their effects potentialized by unprecedented droughts in the Amazon. In 2022, Brazil's Supreme Court ruled that CONAMA (National Environmental Council) must establish more stringent air quality standards. This landmark decision, fueled by climate litigation, led to the approval of new standards in July 2024 (Resolution 506/2024). While a step forward, the new standards include a gradual implementation timeline, with some parameters remaining permissive. For instance, the PM2.5 standard in 2044 will still be double the current WHO limit. This highlights the critical role of climate litigation in driving robust environmental and climate policies. It's a reminder that legal action can be a powerful tool to protect our planet and ensure a healthier future for all.

Funding the Climate Transition Brazil’s federal government announced last week the creation of a new platform to fund their plans for climate transition and ecological transformation projects: Brazilian Platform for Investments in Climate and Ecological Transformation (known by acronym “BIP”). The big idea here is to have a place to connect international investors with sustainable development projects in Brazil. International partners and funding helped in the development of the new platform. The initial focus will be on three sectors: nature-based solutions and the bioeconomy; industry and mobility; and energy. According to the government, among others, the goals of the platform are to: Map and prioritize project pipelines aligned with the government's plans and identify mechanisms to scale them up, in partnership with relevant sectoral initiatives Bring together a global community of investors from public and private sectors, development finance institutions, and multilateral climate funds to expand domestic and international capital available for priority projects Develop potential financing mechanisms and explore ways to enable the strategic and catalytic use of public capital to mobilize private investment, including partnerships with multilateral development banks and national development institutions. Bring forward private sector perspectives on political barriers to help unlock investments in priority sectors Within the three focus sectors, the Platform has already identified and included pilot projects totaling US$10.8 billion in capital that still require that the final investment be made. Among others, these projects include: ·       A company developing a $3 billion renewable fuels proposal aimed at producing 1 billion liters per year of green diesel and sustainable aviation fuel from macauba, a Brazilian plant; ·       As US$1.15 billion project that will be the first industrial-scale green fertilizer plant in Brazil; ·       A $3.5 billion green hydrogen plant; ·       A plan to raise US$425 million to finance the development of low-emission extraction methods for rare earth elements; ·       Reforestation projects of different types; ·       A project to spurt investment US$2.5 billion in the construction of industrial hubs in Brazil for the production of green hydrogen and hot briquetted iron (HBI) aimed at decarbonizing the steel industry. Responsible Business for Long-Term Impact The panellists underscored that sustainability, social impact, and governance are not isolated areas but are intricately connected to organisational goals and community values. Tackling these challenges requires a collective approach that spans sectors and generations. True leadership in this domain is grounded in a vision of responsible business that serves stakeholders, communities, and the planet. Ramphele noted that effective social impact leadership doesn’t just engage with the present but is forward-thinking, preparing today’s youth to tackle tomorrow’s environmental and social challenges. Closing Vision: Collective Solutions for a Sustainable Future The panel concluded with a unified message: the path to sustainable change is one that all sectors and communities must walk together. The panellists emphasised that impactful leadership requires embracing collaboration, inclusivity, and a shared sense of responsibility. When governments, businesses, and communities align on a shared purpose, the possibilities for progress are limitless. The Horasis panel demonstrated that social impact, when grounded in strong governance and a collective vision, becomes a transformative force, strengthening businesses, communities, and ecosystems alike. The session set a path forward, calling on participants to combine their strengths, ideas, and commitment, working together to shape a future grounded in shared purpose. I'm excited to share our article, "Uncovering REDD Plus in Brazil" which has just been published in the journal Sustainability. This article provides a critical analysis of REDD+ projects in Brazil, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities associated with this important initiative. We explore the current state of REDD+ implementation in the country, examining the key factors that have contributed to its progress and the obstacles that remain. Additionally, we discuss potential future directions for REDD+ in Brazil, suggesting strategies to overcome current limitations and maximize the positive impacts of the program. We hope this reflection can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of REDD+ projects in Brazil, leading to more effective implementation and greater environmental benefits. Yesterday I attended the Brazil Climate Summit Europe at the Maison de l’Amérique latine in Paris. It was a very stimulating conversation about Brazil’s role in climate negotiations at a critical moment when the country assumed the G20 presidency and will just COP 30. The panelists reinforced the importance of the private sector’s engagement, as well as discussed Brazil’s energy transition and the development of sustainable agricultural methods. 🌿 Brazil has now adopted a new federal Programme for Green Resilient Cities, focusing on enhancing the environmental quality and resilience of Brazilian cities. Most vulnerable urban territories, where more social inequalities and climate risks exist, will be prioritised. Southern Brazil, especially Porto Alegre in the Rio Grande do Sul region, is devastated by a huge flood. Porto Alegre lies on the eastern bank of the Guaiba Lake, formed by the convergence of five rivers and leading to the Lagoa dos Patos, a giant freshwater lagoon. Since 18th century, Porto Alegre has grown with 1,500,000 population and has become one of the most important alluvial ports in Brazil. Due to its geolocation, the city is prone to flood. After big floods in 1941 and 1967, the city constructed dykes and pumping stations. The highest water level was 4.76 meters in 1941 while the water level in the current flood is 5.32 meters. What could be the solutions to prevent human/economic losses by such outlier floods in the urbanized area? Platform launched to monitor impacts of #fossilfuel industry on #marineecosystems in #Brazil. The ARAYARA International Institute has launched a new environmental mapping platform: Ocean Monitor. This is an innovative and interactive tool developed with the objective of preserving #marineecosystems from the potential impacts of the fossil fuel industry. The new system adds to the Oil-Free Amazon Monitor, launched in 2023, which monitors the situation of the oil and gas sector in the region, providing a comprehensive view of the threats and possible solutions for its preservation. Using geospatial data from local governmental sources, the Ocean Monitor maps how projects of the fossil fuel industry have an impact on the coastal and marine areas of Brazil. It offers an interactive interface where users can apply filters and explore the data through automatically updated maps and graphs. The platform facilitates the visualization of the interactions between the geospatial and statistical data, allowing for an in-depth and intuitive analysis of the impacts of the oil and gas exploration, which place the survival of important conservation areas at risk. Launched in the month that marks five years since the largest oil spill in Brazil’s history, when a crude oil leak affected 130 municipalities in 11 states along the #Braziliancoast, (those responsible have yet to be duly punished), the monitor points out that the risks continue to be high. According to the mapping, sensitive areas of the Brazilian coastal-marine system have been identified that are being overlapped by projects of the oil and gas industry. The diverse data generated and made available by the tool, whose work is supported by iCS, show that, for example, 37 Conservation Units are directly or indirectly threatened by 167 areas of oil exploration – areas that are, in theory, protected by the Coastal and Marine System, which attract ecotourism and generate income for the local communities. The analysis also identified the overlap of the fossil fuel industries in an area that corresponds to the National Action Plan for the Conservation of Coral Environments: 99,000 km², which is equivalent to the size of the Pernambuco and corresponds to 19% Corais, being overlapped by projects of gas exploration and production. It is worth emphasizing that the Plan includes 52 endangered species that depend coral reefs. Among the regions in which overlaps were identified, are some considered to be national treasures, such as the Island Noronha and Abrolhos, in addition to the Great #Amazon Reef System. However, the tool points out that an important area of the fossil fuel industry projects can still be reversed, because they are in the supply and study phases.
