The meaning of this word as found in the Scriptures is worthlessness, and hence reckless, lawlessness. The expression son or man of Belial must be understood as meaning simply a worthless, lawless fellow.

Belial means "without a master", and symbolizes true independence, self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment. The Satanic Bible also associates Belial with independence, the earth, and the north, the direction of darkness. Earth is the element of grounding and realism, keeping people's feet on the ground rather than having their head in the clouds, confused by self-deceit and external influence.

The spelling found in most manuscripts of 2 Corinthians is actually Beliar (Βελιάρ) not Belial (Βελίαλ). This is the reading preferred by textual scholars and the change of -l to -r is attributed to a common change in Aramaic pronunciation. (also "belial" was taken)
