I'm breaking my Dreamwidth laziness silence today to recall a nearly exactly threefour (!)-year-old post on Marriage that I wrote when the Iowa Supreme court decided unanimously that a law banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.
Because that same issue is before the U.S. Supreme Court this week, and the same damn issue keeps coming up and be cited like it is a goddamn fact, (and it continues to piss me off) I am linking again to my old post.
TL;DR Summary: It is NOT true that marriage has always (naturally and historically) between one man and one woman. So STOP using that as a basis for your argument. It wasn't even true in the Bible. You should ask anthropologists about it.
Read it and if you hear people using this argument, take a moment to tell them they are full of shit.
Bonus, the American Anthropological Association statement on Marriage and the Family:
"The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies.

The Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association strongly opposes a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to heterosexual couples."
Hello there!
Aug. 2nd, 2012 09:41 pmHello friends! I've been such an absent woman in the past year. I've been working hard, traveling for work and play, and getting to know my new city and its inhabitants. Things are good--really good, in fact! Not dead! Just busy.
I hope you are all well.
Fannishly, I've been consuming and lurking in many waters--mostly Sherlock (BBC), X-Men: First Class, Lewis, ST:Reboot, the whole Avengers 'verse, and now Teen Wolf. It's hard to believe I used to be so fannishly monogamous!
Have also been working on making new friends--shockingly some of them are even fannish!! It's such a delight to live in a city with other fen. Other fen I like and have things in common with, even!!

checking in / don't panic
Jul. 17th, 2011 09:15 pmAfter several crazy months of travel for work, friends, and family, I finally had the chance to read (a tiny fraction of) my LJ/DW backlog. And, friends, this is it! I can't take the duplication between my two journals any more!
Drives! Me! Nuts!
So, I'm reorganizing and checking for who is posting on DW and/or LJ. If you see a defriending or other changes, don't panic. Nothing is going on except me shuffling where I read posts.
Carry on.

Why, hello Spring!
May. 7th, 2011 09:31 pmI'm far past due on dropping by the fannish community to say hey.
Things are going well in the new city at the new job. I am amazed at how many people I know pass through new city--it's wonderful! I am also amazed at the number of fangirls in new city. I've been ontwo three four fannish outings and am pleased to say that without exception, every fangirl I've met has been super smart! And fun! So, emerging from my fannish cave is going well.
I saw Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein today--the play, itself was far more focused on the creature's perspective than I expected. It was interested and I enjoyed it, for the most part. As a word of warning, Danny Boyle's play has a fairly shocking portrayal of rape. In any case, Benedict was lovely and (again!) well dressed. :D
I'm trying to scrape up other news, but apart from SV's impending finale (another fannish event I'll be checking in at), I can't think of much. To be honest, work is eating most of my attention and energy. It's good, but it's an adjustment to get up to ramp up to new jobs level of activity.

Aug. 21st, 2010 06:44 pmOnce again it has been ages and ages since I've posted. Since May, in fact.
I've been busy, but not, in all honesty, that busy. I'm clearly going through the outs with journaling. I've very, very occasionally read my f-lists, but have hardly even done that. What has happened to me??! I've become (re-become?) a lurker!
( Warning: complaining! )
Dear long lost friends, are any of you watching or playing with Sherlock(BBC)? Or other Sherlock variatios? Star Trek? Who should I be abruptly stalking in those fandoms? Looking for fic, good meta, and other hilarity. Also, how the heck are you guys?
Also, is anyone still using Insane Journal?

kink_bingo, so it's kinky. Watersports and collar.
I'm trying new things! This is my only
kink_bingo entry for the year (Bad Beet!), but it means I can try again with next years game. It's my first attempt at watersports, which I was a little skeptical of, but hey. It's
kink_bingo. If you're not going for the gold (-en showers) there when are you going to do it? Right? ;)
I'm also learning to trace...er, draw? Traw? Drace? Anyway, mixed media more than usual! Hope you enjoy.

Mar. 27th, 2010 07:32 pmI'm checking in since it's been so long. I'm still here! I've just been busy and haven't had much time to LJ of late. I only have a couple hours of free time in the evenings and somehow posting doesn't seem to make the cut very often.
In other news, I will be going back to India for a few weeks in May to visit my cousin who is doing some non-profit work there. I am SUPER excited to go see her. I am also excited because I will be going with my aunt and uncle and their son, which will be the first time I've been in India with any family or non-Indophiles. SO excited to introduce them to the country I love!
Lastly, am thinking about--maybe--attending my first fan convention. A big step for this shy fangirl.
Hope everyone is doing well. I am so woefully behind on even reading LJ, I'm feeling bad that I don't know what's going on with you all.

Happy (beladed) Valenline's Day!
Feb. 25th, 2010 08:41 pmAs my dear, departed Grandmother once said, "Happy Beladed Valenline's Day!" (on a homemade valentine my freshman year of college). I've been unable to say it any other way since! Hee!
I am such a lucky girl to have friends thinking of me on V-day, even when I've been so absent on LJ. Thank you so much, my dear
roxymissrose and
patrese1 for the profile gifts. That was so thoughtful of you. It really warmed my heart.
I've not had much time for LJ, but have recently been playing with Photoshop. I found a tutorial on how to make line drawings and have been spending my free time trying to learn how to trace over images. Here's a sample of how it looks.

( Bigger! )
I'm so excited to try out this new technique on new art once I get better at it! Unfortunately, some parts are easier than others. The faces turned out really well (which surprised the crap out of me!)! But hands are giving me a hard time. Hopefully I'll get a better sense of it as I keep practicing.
I'm also busy planning another trip back to India this summer. I will be visiting my cousin and traveling with my Aunt and Uncle--my first time there with family! I'm very excited to share this with them. Sadly, I had to get some updates to my inoculations today. Waaah! My arms hurt. *sulks*
And that's pretty much what I'm up to. Now I'm going to bed early to sulk about my sore arms some more.
ETA: Here is the tutorial I was inspired by.

Memes: Cancer and Fanart
Jan. 11th, 2010 08:56 pmGakked from a bunch of people, for no other reason than it is a big issue in my family.
In memory of family and friends who have lost the battle with cancer; and in support of the ones who continue to conquer it! Post this on your LJ if you know someone who has or had cancer. 93% won't copy and paste this. Will you?
For my maternal grandmother and grandfather, my paternal grandmother and grandfather, all of whom died from cancer.
For my mother, who had a double mastectomy, my aunt who had her uterus removed, for my LJ friend,s and everyone else currently fighting and winning against cancer.

And now for something completely different:

Hey there fellow dog owners and other experts--I need your help!
I recently got back from being out of town for the holidays and discovered that somehow my dog has lost her crate training!
I took her (and her crate) with me. She was crated intermittently and my cousin heard her whining and whimpering once, which was the first clue that something had changed for her. Then, tonight my neighbor called and told me that she has been yipping and whining for a couple of hours each time I've left the house since we got back into town. She has also been drooling along the door of the crate, but not peeing or pooing in the crate.
If anyone has any ideas for what might be going on or what the best way to deal with this, I would really appreciate it. Have you ever seen this before or heard of it? Any idea what might trigger it?
These are my ideas and thoughts so far:
I can't take any more time off of work, but I could maybe run home over lunch to let her out. On the other hand, I'm worried that she doesn't really have a sense of time and that coming home over lunch would just create two stressful crating situations a day.
The only other thought I've had is that I could maybe (maybe) ask some friends to dog-sit for part of the day. Maybe. But not for very long.
Help?

Happy New Year, friends! I was suddenly seized by the urge to play around with photoshop and to experiment with the pretty that is the new Star Trek film. What a great way to begin 2010! I hope you all are as pleased with the year so far. ♥

Holy Crap! How is it almost Christmas??
Dec. 20th, 2009 07:54 amI'm used to one month slipping away without saying goodbye, but BOTH November and December are (nearly) over? Maybe I've been busier than I thought...
In the spirit of the Holidays I'd like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season--however you celebrate. Or if you don't celebrate, I wish you wonderful quiet days at work! Today is the solstice, which has acquired new meaning to me since I got a dog. I am suddenly keenly aware of the loss of light and shift in the sun's pattern. The solstice means I've made it through my first winter! It's only going to get lighter from here on out. Yay!
In other news, a huuuge than you to
talitha78 for the card. It's so cute! And I love the pin you sent--adorable!! I'm thinking it maybe subtexty enough for me to put it on my coat!! Hee! ♥ ♥

Pondering the fannish comeing-of-age

Hello... is this thing on? It's been a while since I've done any posting. I hope you guys are still out there!
So, I have been thinking about my fannish evolution recently... partly because I am a fan of several shows these days, but not in the intensity of the Smallville love of old. It made me wonder... it seems like I've heard other SV emeritus friends say similar things. while I've known monofannish fen and polyfannish fen, I don't really know if there is a larger pattern in fannish evolution.
What do you think? Is it common to go crazy about you first fandom? After the inevitable falling out, do you tend toward multiple fandom love? What has been your fannish story?
---
In other news, about other social media: You can message me or email me about any of the below if you don't want your information displayed in comments.
+ I am on Twitter, though I'm am not very fannish. It's very daily life and work focused. It's a protected account, but let me know who you are and I'll add you.
+ I am now on Google Wave, but I have no idea how to use it. Any tips? Any of you on it and should/can I connect to you, if you are?
Thank you to whoever gave me the invite--it was so long ago that I can't remember who I asked. I now have 16 invites (to be delivered by Google at an unspecified, later date) to offer up to others! Let me know if you want one! You too could be thanking someone anonymous when you get your invite!
+ I have 10 Dreamwidth invites. Let me know if you'd like one. (I'll need a non-LJ email address to send it to.)

Happy Thanksgiving, folks
Nov. 25th, 2009 08:27 pmWell. Today has been eventful.
On the way to work, I am convinced that my local radio host made a slash joke!
I left work early for cleaning in preparation for my mother coming for the weekend and spent the next several hours cleaning. Then, when a friend came over to borrow a pie plate, I shatter three of my pyrex baking dishes, dusted my kitchen in micro-pyrex, and got myself a few pyrex wounds.
Now, I'm up two cups of cheap wine and am snuggling with my puppy as I wait for my mom to arrive.
Ahhhhh, holidays!!
*SIGH* *RELAXES*
Hope you all are having a better holiday that I am. (But no worries. My holiday is bound to improve with my mom's arrival.)
Happy Thanksgiving, y'all. I'm thankful that my reflexes are fast, that my mom is on her way, and that you all are my friends. :)
