Let's have a new ride share board entry for 2024. One should not have to scroll down past whatever happened in 2018 to share rides.

I'm guessing it isn't happening this year, given that I haven't heard anything, but I did want to check...

For Boston area peeps looking for unusual ice cream flavors to try, I can highly recommend Tipping Cow on Medford St in Somerville, right next to the Winter Hill public school. Recent flavors I've enjoyed:

- Cranberry (a custard ice cream, including nutmeg and cinnamon)
- Gingerbread cookie dough
- Cannoli
- Blueberry buttermilk
- Fig and goat cheese (the cheese chunks were a little weird)
- Blueberry ginger

They're also expanding into Allston, although I'm not sure exactly where. Anyway, check them out. :-)

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that we're not doing it this year. There are many reasons, but I'm not going to get into them at this time. You know what most of them are already. We ARE committed to there being a BaitCon XXX. We will not go gentle into that good night!

I wish to make a couple of points:

1) By this spring, a number of us will have been vaccinated.

2) Scientists say that one is much less likely to catch COVID-19 outdoors than indoors, all other things being equal.

Look: Last summer, there were massive George Floyd protests, thousands of people gathering to protest, and these caused no discernible blip on the COVID rates. Why? Those events were outdoors. People were not idiots. People tried to keep space between themselves and people they don't live with, and 99% wore masks correctly. OTOH, many other events, events attended by people in denial, were superspreader events. Why? People gathered indoors, hugged, shook hands, and didn't wear masks.

I believe we can have a Baitcon this year. It would probably have to look a little different. I understand that not everyone will have been vaccinated by late June or whenever. Here's what I imagine we would have to modify:

1) Social distancing as the default expectation. No getting within a couple of feet of people you don't already hang out with regularly without the kind of discussion and consent-giving that you would usually require before more intimate interaction.

2) Masks. We all know how to wear masks now, yes? Yes.

3) Servers in the food line rather than everyone touches the food

4) Dishes are drop-and-go, with volunteers taking dish-washing shifts, rather than we stand elbow to elbow to do our individual dishes (yes I am willing to do dish-washing shifts)

5) Orderly ice cream service, rather than the mosh pit of ice cream grabbing (some of us might actually like this change)

6) Probably fewer flavors of ice cream, to make this feasible. Some large batches of proven known favorites.

7) Up to the last minute and beyond refund policy (before saying "that's financially infeasible", talk to me, let's discuss ideas?)

8) Only one family group at a time in a shower area

If, as the time approaches, the numbers in the news are making us feel ooky about all this, we could step up the precautions even further:

9) PCR testing beforehand for anyone not vaccinated yet?

10) Close every other toilet stall?

11) Wait outside in line for sinks?

I know, ugh, I'm sure we all wish that things could be exactly the same as they always were. Might not yet be possible for us to party like it's 2019. But I'd rather do a Baitcon with the above modifications than have yet another weekend at home, looking at the same damn four walls as the previous 375 or so days of March so far.

Discuss?

I'm suddenly very glad that Baitcon is in August rather than June this year!

I'm not sure the pandemic crisis will have subsided sufficiently by August, but I think the odds are much better for August than for June.

In the meantime, all y'all take good care of yourselves! <3

No, it will actually be surprising, because we never asked about this date. 😕 So, after a bunch of back and forths with The Abode, nearly every time the available dates changing from what they'd said last time, we have picked a date from what was left/available. Baitcon XXX will be held: --> AUGUST 7-10, 2020 <--

Third try's the charm, maybe.

1 emergency-only-driver person, camping gear, ice cream makings, requesting ride or driver to Baitcon from Central Jersey. I have a car that will fit at least 3 people and gear. I'm willing to let someone else drive it. I need to sit in the front passenger seat.

WRT comment about being in Maryland from my last post, I was in MD last week, and am in NJ this week, so that possibility has passed.

email me directly at amqueue at G male dot con. (I'm sure folks can figure out the proper address.)

I'm NOT on FB. I will not see a reply to this message on FB. A kind person reposted this on FB last time, and hopefully some kind person will do so again. The only reason I care about FB for this is because apparently most of the people are there.

Thanks in advance.

JB, if I don't get there, email me after the fact and we'll discuss my registration fee.

Hi folks! I've seen a several people wondering what do to about CPAPs camping.

While there are outlets for charing, there are NO outlets in the sleeping areas. This means if you're using a CPAP it needs a battery.

We are a family of two adults and a 4 year old. We're planning on renting a car, but I wonder if we could carpool with one other person—either in their car, or in one we rent. We pack relatively light (two frame packs, plus a little more for the kid) and I think we could manage another light-packer's stuff.

We would be doing the Friday to Monday schedule.

The contra-dance band is looking extremely sparse this year. Do we have anyone this year who can hold down either a chordal instrument (e.g. piano or guitar) or contra melodies?

At the moment, I only know of Johanna, Susan, and me for the band.

If someone could cross post this to FB it would be greatly appreciated.

I live about 2 miles from I-78 in close to the middle east-west in NJ. I have me, a tent, a bed and bedding, clothing, and ice cream stuff.

I have a car that, in previous years, took four people and their gear (above mentioned tent, bed and bedding, 2 smaller tents, clothing and bedding and bed for all of the above, and ice cream gear) to previous Baitcons. It's a mazda 5. If you're a competent driver, and able to function taking the car up the hill at the Abode, I'm willing for you to drive my car.

I need to ride in the front passenger seat, due to physical conditions and tendency to motion sickness.

I've already registered, and I have my ice cream flavor list. :D

Note: It's *possible* that I'll be in Maryland the week leading into Baitcon weekend. Picking up someone there to drive to my place on Thursday to drive to Baitcon on Friday may be a thing that can happen.

One can email me directly by taking the name I sign this under and sending that to Uncle Goog's mail service. (Sorry, I really don't want my address picked up by things off faceplant.)

Signed,
amqueue

ETA: I live in New Jersey. Close by Somerville, NJ, but I don't think the Somerville most people would think about. I'm an idiot for not mentioning it.

As I don't drive anymore except in emergency, and my drivers (read, adult children) are not interested in attending Baitcon, I hope to find a driver to get me and my stuff there.

I'm happy to provide a car big enough for me and my stuff and another person and their stuff, and possibly more than one other person. (Mazda 5 - This kind of car: https://www.carmax.com/car/16489513 ) This car has successfully been to Baitcon before, with 2+ people and gear in it.

As long as you're an actually competent driver in terms of climbing the hill at Baitcon, I'm comfortable with you driving my car.

As I don't use Facebook at all, could someone please xpost this? Since it seems that that's likely the best way to get the most eyeballs on it...

Khatru on IRC and elboid discord, /amq from elbows@ and various other places, and various other names that may or may not be usually cross-referenced.

So, I know it's obligatory to have the annual panic, but here it is again: Baitcon reg numbers are about HALF what we need them to be, and it's about 10-11 days before our cancellation deadline... Please reg if you're coming? Thank you!

Looks like registration has been open for a little bit, but I didn't see an announcement post, so I decided to Be Bold and make one. Here's the invitation! http://wp.baitcon.org/baitcon-xxix/the-invitation/

Early registration closes end of day on May 20.

Vic is soooo excited about Baitcon, they insisted that we register last night so they could see how registration works and then they commandeered my laptop to read the entire baitcon.org website. It's good to see Vic so enthused about anything outside of Tumblr. Thank you, JB, for doing this.

Vic continues to be fired up about our, uh, weird ice cream flavor plans. "Cricket Road": kind of like Rocky Road, but with crickets instead of nuts. Yes, crickets. Roasted crickets and marshmallows are really a great combo. (We had a rice krispie treat bar with crickets in Quebec, and the crickets were the best part.)

My main anxiety is that, like with the bacon in the maple bacon ice cream, the crickets might absorb moisture between LN2 time and flavor-running time, and lose crunch. That was bad enough for the bacon but would be disastrous for the crickets, I think. With an animal protein that's so far outside the cultural norm, it has to be just absolutely perfect, or else the knee-jerk revulsion reaction comes welling back up.

So, here's a possible plan: to only put a tiny amount (about 4 oz. probably) into a yogurt container, and serve the rest of the batch immediately after LN2 mixing. (I'll ask around beforehand to see who's game to try some.) The batch in the yogurt container will not join the Running of the Flavors, but will just be an experimental sample for me and Vic to sample later to see how it holds up over time. If the concept is well-received, and if it holds up well enough over about 8 hours, a new batch can join the Running of the Flavors the next day or the next year.

Maybe for the less adventurous palate we'll make some straight-up chocolate and marshmallow ice cream. Like Rocky Road but with no crunchy ingredients. I haven't had Rocky Road in a long time, so, remind me: the marshmallow is not distinct pieces of marshmallow, but kind of continuous with the ice cream base, right? How would you do this, use marshmallow fluff and swirl it in at the last minute?
