UPDATE インターネットの中核となる仕組みのいくつかを監督する団体のInternet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers（ICANN）が、米政府からの独立を認められた。 ICANNと米商務省は米国時間9月30日、ICANNが「独立機関として、いかなる単一の組織にも支配されない」ことを定めた新たな合意に署名したことを発表した。この合意では、ICANNが今後も民間の非営利団体であり続けることについても明記している。 米国政府とICANNの間で結ばれた既存の取り決めはこれを機に失効し、新たな協定に道を譲ることになる。 「（合意は）ICANNに対し、コミュニティーによって行われる査定の実施を義務付けている。これは、複数の利害関係者からなる（ICANNの）組織モデルが、自らを精査できるほどに強力だという認識をさらに高めるものだ」とICANNは述べ
