火星にあるビクトリアクレーターの壁。砂の層の下に、水の流れでできた地層などがあった。写真は疑似カラー＝スティーブン・スキアーズ氏提供 火星の赤道付近にあるビクトリアクレーターの壁に、水の流れによって土砂が運ばれて堆積（たいせき）した地層が見つかった。似た地層は約６キロ北の別のクレーターでも見つかっており、米コーネル大などの研究チームは「古代の火星では広い範囲で水が流れていたようだ」としている。論文は２２日付の米科学誌サイエンスに発表された。 米航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）の探査車オポチュニティーが撮影した画像を解析してわかった。オポチュニティーは０４年１月に火星に着陸。最近は約２年にわたって、ビクトリアクレーターの周囲を調べていた。（東山正宜）
