"The Cromartie Fool" (1731). Christies [25/9/2000] entitled it "Gardener holding a cabbage with a candle" [I would merely want to ask the cataloguer -- "Why?" !] . He holds a kail-stock/ cabbage-stalk in the top of which is a lighted candle, known in Scots as "a candle in a castock", a special sort of torch which was part of the traditional festivities of Halloween. A recent suggestion that he is "The Laird of Udny's fool" cannot be substantiated as Jamie Fleeman was only 18 in 1731!
