From #COP29: We are broadening our collaboration with EBRD in the nuclear energy sector to help countries achieve #NetZero, extending our cooperation beyond nuclear and radiation safety concerns. Building upon our ongoing collaboration on nuclear safety, decommissioning, environmental remediation, we will coordinate activities to support countries to build capacity in developing energy policy, energy strategy, governance and financing frameworks, and mechanisms to reach net zero goals, taking into account the potential for countries to use nuclear energy. We will also promote gender equality in the nuclear sector, including through the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme and the Lise Meitner Programme. Learn more: atoms.iaea.org/3YQxiVG

🧊 Glaciers are retreating at unprecedented rates, threatening global water supplies. A high-level event held today at COP29 Azerbaijan aimed at bridging the financial gap to address climate change and foster glacier preservation. It was attended by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan , Bahodur Sheralizoda. The IAEA and Tajikistan have already worked together on monitoring glacial retreat and its impact on soil and water resources using nuclear and isotopic techniques, and they plan to expand this collaboration. New partnerships to explore the use of small modular reactors—including a deal between Google and Kairos Power to deploy 500 MW of SMR capacity by 2035 —and emerging opportunities for financing, were some of the highlights of today’s #COP29 event organized by the IAEA and the United States of America.   The high-level discussion revealed the infrastructure and regulatory challenges that need to be addressed to enable a faster #SMR rollout and highlighted how stakeholders—including end users and vendors—are navigating them.   Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dzqaNfPm
