Abstract:
The masses of the ground and isomeric states in $^{124,125}$Ag have been measured using the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. The ground states of $^{124}$Ag and $^{125}$Ag were found to be 30(250) keV and 250(430) keV less bound but 36 and 110 times more precise than in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020, respectively. The excitation energy of $^{124}$Ag$^{m}$, ${E_x = 188.2(25)}$ keV, was determined for the first time. The new precise mass values have been utilised to study the evolution of nuclear structure via two-neutron separation energies. The impact on the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process has been investigated via neutron-capture reaction rate calculations. The precision measurements indicate a more linear trend in two-neutron separation energies and reduce the mass-related uncertainties for the neutron-capture rate of $^{124}$Ag$(n,γ)^{125}$Ag by a factor of around 100. The new mass values also improve the mass of $^{123}$Pd, previously measured using $^{124}$Ag as a reference.

Plastic scintillator strips are considered as one of the promising solutions for the cost-effective construction of total-body positron emission tomography, (PET) system. The purpose of the performed measurements is to compare the transparency of long plastic scintillators with dimensions 6 mm x 24 mm x 1000 mm and with all surfaces polished. Six different types of commercial, general purpose, blue-emitting plastic scintillators with low attenuation of visible light were tested, namely: polyvinyl toluene-based BC-408, EJ-200, RP-408, and polystyrene-based Epic, SP32 and UPS-923A. For determination of the best type of plastic scintillator for totalbody Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph (TB-J-PET) construction, emission and transmission spectra, and technical attenuation length (TAL) of blue light-emitting by the scintillators were measured and compared. The TAL values were determined with the use of UV lamp as excitation source, and photodiode as light detector. Emission spectra of investigated scintillators have maxima in the range from 420 nm to 429 nm. The BC-408 and EJ-200 have the highest transmittance values of about 90% at the maximum emission wavelength measured through a 6 mm thick scintillator strip and the highest technical attenuation length reaching about 2000 mm, allowing assembly of long detection modules for time-of-flight (TOF) J-PET scanners. Influence of the 6 mm x 6 mm, 12 mm x 6 mm, 24 mm x 6 mm cross-sections of the 1000 mm long EJ-200 plastic scintillator on the TAL and signal intensity was measured. The highest TAL value was determined for samples with 24 mm x 6 mm cross-section.

In the state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography (PET), information about the polarization of annihilation photons is not available. Current PET systems track molecules labeled with positron-emitting radioisotopes by detecting the propagation direction of two photons from positron-electron annihilation. However, annihilation photons carry more information than just the site where they originated. Here we present a novel J-PET scanner built from plastic scintillators, in which annihilation photons interact predominantly via the Compton effect, providing information about photon polarization in addition to information on photon direction of propagation. Theoretically, photons from the decay of positronium in a vacuum are maximally entangled in polarization. However, in matter, when the positron from positronium annihilates with the electron bound to the atom, the question arises whether the photons from such annihilation are maximally entangled. In this work, we determine the distribution of the relative angle between polarization orientations of two photons from positron-electron annihilation in a porous polymer. Contrary to prior results for positron annihilation in aluminum and copper, where the strength of observed correlations is as expected for maximally entangled photons, our results show a significant deviation. We demonstrate that in porous polymer, photon polarization correlation is weaker than for maximally entangled photons but stronger than for separable photons. The data indicate that more than 40% of annihilations in Amberlite resin lead to a non-maximally entangled state. Our result indicates the degree of correlation depends on the annihilation mechanism and the molecular arrangement. We anticipate that the introduced Compton interaction-based PET system opens a promising perspective for exploring polarization correlations in PET as a novel diagnostic indicator.

In $^{105}$Mo and $^{121}$Pd there were no signs of a long-lived isomeric state. The ground-state measurements of $^{119}$Pd and $^{122}$Ag indicated that both are significantly more bound than the literature values. For $^{122}$Ag, there was no indication of a proposed third long-lived state. The results for the $N=49$ nucleus $^{84}$Br and isomers close to doubly magic $^{132}$Sn have been compared to the shell-model and the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model calculations.

Discrete symmetries play an important role in particle physics with violation of CP connected to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe. We report the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in decays of ortho-positronium, performed with methodology involving polarization of photons from these decays. Positronium, the simplest bound state of an electron and positron, is of recent interest with discrepancies reported between measured hyperfine energy structure and theory at the level of $10^{-4}$ signaling a need for better understanding of the positronium system at this level. We test discrete symmetries using photon polarizations determined via Compton scattering in the dedicated J-PET tomograph on an event-by-event basis and without the need to control the spin of the positronium with an external magnetic field, in contrast to previous experiments. Our result is consistent with QED expectations at the level of 0.0007 and one standard deviation.

The multinucleon transfer (MNT) reaction approach was successfully employed for the first time to measure the isomeric ratios (IRs) of $^{211}$Po (25/2$^+$) isomer and its (9/2$^+$) ground state at the IGISOL facility using a 945 MeV $^{136}$Xe beam impinged on $^{209}$Bi and $^{\rm nat}$Pb targets. The dominant production of isomers compared to the corresponding ground states was consistently revealed in the $α$-decay spectra. Deduced IR of $^{211}$Po populated through the $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb reaction was found to enhance $\approx$1.8-times than observed for $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi. State-of-the-art Langevin-type model calculations have been utilized to estimate the spin distribution of an MNT residue. The computations qualitatively corroborate with the considerable increase in IRs of $^{211}$Po produced from $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb compared to $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi. Theoretical investigations indicate a weak influence of target spin on IRs. The enhancement of the $^{211}$Po isomer in the $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb over $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi can be attributed to the different proton ($p$)-transfer production routes. Estimations demonstrate an increment in the angular momentum transfer, favorable for isomer production, with increasing projectile energy. Comparative analysis indicates the two entrance channel parameters, projectile mass and $p$-transfer channels, strongly influencing the population of the high-spin isomer of $^{211}$Po (25/2$^+$). This is the first experimental and theoretical investigation on the IRs of nuclei produced via different channels of MNT reactions, with the latter quantitatively underestimating the former by a factor of two.

Studies based on imaging the annihilation of the electron (e$^{-}$) and its antiparticle positron (e$^{+}$) open up several interesting applications in nuclear medicine and fundamental research. The annihilation process involves both the direct conversion of e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ into photons and the formation of their atomically bound state, the positronium atom (Ps), which can be used as a probe for fundamental studies. With the ability to produce large quantities of Ps, manipulate them in long-lived Ps states, and image their annihilations after a free fall or after passing through atomic interferometers, this purely leptonic antimatter system can be used to perform inertial sensing studies in view of a direct test of Einstein equivalence principle. It is envisioned that modular multistrip detectors can be exploited as potential detection units for this kind of studies. In this work, we report the results of the first feasibility study performed on a e$^{+}$ beamline using two detection modules to evaluate their reconstruction performance and spatial resolution for imaging e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ annihilations and thus their applicability for gravitational studies of Ps.

The excitation energy of the $^{118}$In first isomeric state, $E_x = 40.3(25)$ keV, was determined for the first time. The updated mass values removed the fluctuations observed in the two-neutron separation energies and lead to a smoother linear decrease of both isotopic chains. The $\log(ft)$ value for the $^{118}$Cd decay is also found to increase from 3.93(6) to 4.089(8). The reported results indicate an absence of significant structural changes around $N=70$.

Investigation of ICF over CF was done by measuring cross sections of the populated residues in the $^{7}$Li-induced reaction on $^{\text{nat}}$Nb target within 3--6.5 MeV/nucleon energy region. Measured excitation functions of different channels were compared with different equilibrium (EQ) and preequilibrium (PEQ) models. The enhancement in cross sections in the proton ($\sim$ 20--30 MeV) and $α$-emitting channels, which may be ascribed to ICF, was observed in the measured energy range when compared to the Hauser-Feshbach and exciton model calculations using EMPIRE, which satisfactorily reproduces the neutron channels, compared to the Weisskopf-Ewing model and Hybrid Monte Carlo calculations. The increment of the incomplete fusion fraction was observed with rising projectile energy.

Several investigations on the complete-incomplete fusion (CF-ICF) dynamics of $α$-cluster well-bound nuclei has been contemplated above the Coulomb barrier ($\sim$ 4-7 MeV/nucleon) in recent years. It is therefore expected to observe significant ICF over CF in the reactions induced by a weakly bound $α$-cluster nucleus at slightly above the barrier. In order to investigate CF-ICF in the loosely bound system, $^{\text{7}}$Li beam was bombarded on the $^{\text{nat}}$Mo foils, separated by the aluminium (Al) catcher foils alternatively, within $\sim$ 3-6.5 MeV/nucleon. Evaporation residues produced in each foil were identified by the $γ$-ray spectrometry. Measured cross section data of the residues were compared with the theoretical model calculations based on the equilibrium (EQ) and preequilibrium (PEQ) reaction mechanisms. The experimental cross section of $^{\text{101m,100,99m,97}}$Rh, $^{\text{97,95}}$Ru, $^{\text{99m,96,95,94,93m+g}}$Tc and $^{\text{93m}}$Mo residues measured at various projectile energies were satisfactorily reproduced by the simplified coupled channel approach in comparison to single barrier penetration model calculation. Significant cross section enhancement in the $α$-emitting channels was observed compared to EQ and PEQ model calculations throughout observed energy region. The ICF process over CF was analyzed by comparing with EMPIRE. The increment of the incomplete fusion fraction was observed with increasing projectile energies. Theoretical model calculations reveal that compound reaction mechanism is the major contributor to the production of residues. Theoretical evaluations substantiate the contribution of ICF over the CF in $α$-emitting channels.

The heavy-ion induced reactions on intermediate mass targets are complex in nature, even at the low energies. To understand those nuclear reaction phenomena in detail, more experimental studies are required in a wide range of energy. Heavy-ion reactions were investigated by measuring production cross sections of the residues produced in the $^{11}$B-induced reactions on $^{89}$Y and $^{93}$Nb at low energies, near and above the barrier, and to check the effectiveness of the different nuclear models to explain them. Further, aim is also to optimize the production parameters of neutron deficient medically relevant $^{97}$Ru and $^{101m}$Rh radioisotopes produced in those reactions, respectively. The $^{11}$B-beam was allowed to impinge on $^{89}$Y and $^{93}$Nb foils supported by an aluminum catcher foil, arranged in a stack, in 27.5-58.7 and 30.6-62.3 MeV energy range, respectively. The $γ$-spectrometry was carried out after EOB to measure the activity of the radionuclides produced in each foil and cross sections were calculated. Measured cross-sectional data were analyzed in terms of compound and precompound model calculations. The measured cross sections of the residues showed good agreement with the model calculations based on the Hauser-Feshbach formulation and exciton model. A substantial preequilibrium contribution was noticed in the 3$n$ reaction channel in both the reactions. Theoretical estimations confirmed that major production yields are mostly contributed by the compound reaction process. Preequilibrium emissions contributed at the high energy tail of the 3$n$ channel for both the reactions. Moreover, an indirect signature of a direct reaction influence was also observed in the $^{90m}$Y production.

Background: Interaction of weakly bound heavy-ions with an intermediate or heavy target is not yet understood completely due to the scarcity of experimental data. In order to develop a clear understanding of breakup fusion or preequilibrium emission even at low energy range, 3--10 MeV/nucleon, more experimental investigations are necessary. Purpose: Study of reaction mechanisms involved in the weakly bound heavy-ion induced reaction, $^7$Li + $^{93}$Nb, at low energies by measuring the production cross sections of the residual radionuclides. Method: Natural niobium ($^{93}$Nb) foil, backed by aluminium (Al) catcher, arranged in a stack was bombarded by $^{7}$Li ions of 20-45 MeV energy. Activity of the residues produced in each $^{93}$Nb target was measured by off-line $γ$-ray spectrometry after the end of bombardment (EOB) and cross sections were calculated. Experimental cross sections were compared with those computed using compound and precompound models. Results: In general, measured excitation functions of all residues produced in $^{7}$Li + $^{93}$Nb reaction showed good agreement with the model calculations based on Hauser-Feshbach formalism and exciton model for compound and precompound processes, respectively. Significant preequilibrium emission of neutrons was observed at the relatively high energy tail of the excitation function of $^{97}$Ru.
