The $β$ decay of one-neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be was investigated using the Warsaw Optical Time Projection Chamber (OTPC) detector to measure $β$-delayed charged particles. The results of two experiments are reported. In the first one, carried out in LNS Catania, the absolute branching ratio for $β$-delayed $α$ emission was measured by counting incoming $^{11}$Be ions stopped in the detector and the observed decays with the emission of $α$ particle. The result of 3.27(46)\% is in good agreement with the literature value. In the second experiment, performed at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN, bunches containing several hundreds of $^{11}$Be ions were implanted into the OTPC detector followed by the detection of decays with the emission of charged particles. The energy spectrum of $β$-delayed $α$ particles was determined in the full energy range. It was analysed in the R-matrix framework and was found to be consistent with the literature. The best description of the spectrum was obtained assuming that the two $3/2^+$ and one $1/2^+$ states in $^{11}$B are involved in the transition. The search for $β$-delayed emission of protons was undertaken. Only the upper limit for the branching ratio for this process of $(2.2 \pm 0.6_{\rm stat} \pm 0.6_{\rm sys}) \times 10^{-6}$ could be determined. This value is in conflict with the result published in [Ayyad et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 082501 (2019)] but does agree with the limit reported in [Riisager et al., Eur. Phys. J. A (2020) 56:100]

The framework is a dynamical coupled-channel model, based on the recent Jülich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel eta electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.

Performing large scale fits ($\sim10^5$ data) we find a set of solutions with $χ^2_{\rm dof}=1.69-1.81$ which allows us to assess the systematic uncertainty of the approach.

A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $γ$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $β$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $α$-decay recoil source. In this paper, a feasibility analysis of this new concept, and an experimental investigation of its key ingredients, using a pure $^{229}$Ac ion beam produced at the ISOLDE radioactive beam facility, is reported.

This dissertation investigated selected processes involving baryons and nuclei in hard scattering reactions. Through these processes, this work explored the constituent structure of baryons and the mechanisms through which the interactions between these constituents ultimately control the selected reactions. First, hard nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering was studied considering the quark exchange (QE) between the nucleons to be the dominant mechanism of interaction in the constituent picture. It was found that an angular asymmetry exhibited by proton-neutron (pn) elastic scattering data is explained within this framework if a quark-diquark picture dominates the nucleon's structure instead of a more traditional SU(6) model. The latter yields an asymmetry around 90 deg center of mass scattering with a sign opposite to what is experimentally observed. The second process is the hard breakup by a photon of a nucleon-nucleon system in light nuclei. Proton-proton (pp) and pn breakup in 3He, and double Delta-isobars production in deuteron breakup were analyzed in the hard rescattering model (HRM), which in conjunction with the QE mechanism provides a QCD description of the reaction. Cross sections for both channels in 3He photodisintegration were computed without the need of a fitting parameter. The results presented here for pp breakup show excellent agreement with recent experimental data. In double Delta-isobars production in deuteron breakup, HRM angular distributions for the two double Delta channels were compared to the pn channel and to each other. An important prediction from this study is that the Delta++ Delta- channel consistently dominates Delta+Delta0, which is in contrast with models that unlike the HRM consider a double Delta system in the initial state of the interaction. For such models both channels should have the same strength.

Parameter free cross sections for pp and pn break up channels are calculated through the input of experimental cross sections on pp and pn elastic scattering. The calculated cross section for pp breakup and its predicted energy dependency are in good agreement with recent experimental data. Predictions on spectator momentum distributions and helicity transfer are also presented.

We study high energy photodisintegration of the deuteron into two $Δ$-isobars at large center of mass angles within the QCD hard rescattering model (HRM). According to the HRM, the process develops in three main steps: the photon knocks the quark from one of the nucleons in the deuteron; the struck quark rescatters off a quark from the other nucleon sharing the high energy of the photon; then the energetic quarks recombine into two outgoing baryons which have large transverse momenta. Within the HRM, the cross section is expressed through the amplitude of $pn\rightarrow ΔΔ$ scattering which we evaluated based on the quark-interchange model of hard hadronic scattering. Calculations show that the angular distribution and the strength of the photodisintegration is mainly determined by the properties of the
$pn\rightarrow ΔΔ$ scattering. We predict that the cross section of the deuteron breakup to $ Δ^{++}Δ^{-}$ is 4-5 times larger than that of the breakup to the $ Δ^{+}Δ^{0}$ channel. Also, the angular distributions for these two channels are markedly different. These can be compared with the predictions based on the assumption that two hard $Δ$-isobars are the result of the disintegration of the preexisting $ΔΔ$ components of the deuteron wave function. In this case, one expects the angular distributions and cross sections of the breakup in both $ Δ^{++}Δ^{-}$ and $ Δ^{+}Δ^{0}$ channels to be similar.

We investigate a large angle photodisintegration of two nucleons from the $^3$He nucleus within the framework of the hard rescattering model (HRM). In the HRM a quark of one nucleon knocked out by an incoming photon rescatters with a quark of the other nucleon leading to the production of two nucleons with large relative momentum. Assuming the dominance of the quark-interchange mechanism in a hard NN scattering, the HRM allows to express the amplitude of a two-nucleon break-up reaction through the convolution of photon-quark scattering, $NN$ hard scattering amplitude and nuclear spectral function. The photon-quark scattering amplitude can be explicitly calculated in the high energy regime, whereas for $NN$ scattering one uses the fit of the available experimental data. The HRM predicts several specific features for the hard breakup reaction. First, the cross section will approximately scale as $s^{-11}$. Secondly, the $s^{11}$ weighted cross section will have the shape of energy dependence similar to that of $s^{10}$ weighted $NN$ elastic scattering cross section. Also one predicts an enhancement of the $pp$ breakup relative to the $pn$ breakup cross section as compared to the results from low energy kinematics. Another result is the prediction of different spectator momentum dependencies of $pp$ and $pn$ breakup cross sections. This is due to the fact that same-helicity $pp$-component is strongly suppressed in the ground state wave function of $^3$He. Because of this suppression the HRM predicts significantly different asymmetries for the cross section of polarization transfer $NN$ breakup reactions for circularly polarized photons. For the $pp$ breakup this asymmetry is predicted to be zero while for the $pn$ it is close to ${2\over 3}$.
