Abstract:
A direct measurement of the ground-state-to-ground-state electron-capture decay $Q$ value of $^{95}$Tc has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. A direct measurement of the ground-state-to-ground-state electron-capture decay $Q$ value of $^{95}$Tc has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. The $Q$ value was determined to be 1695.92(13) keV by taking advantage of the high resolving power of the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique to resolve the low-lying isomeric state of $^{95}$Tc (excitation energy of 38.910(40) keV) from the ground state. The mass excess of $^{95}$Tc was measured to be $-$86015.95(18) keV/c$^2$, exhibiting a precision of about 28 times higher and in agreement with the value from the newest Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2020). Combined with the nuclear energy-level data for the decay-daughter $^{95}$Mo, two potential ultra-low $Q$-value transitions are identified for future long-term neutrino-mass determination experiments. The atomic self-consistent many-electron Dirac--Hartree--Fock--Slater method and the nuclear shell model have been used to predict the partial half-lives and energy-release distributions for the two transitions. The dominant correction terms related to those processes are considered, including the exchange and overlap corrections, and the shake-up and shake-off effects. The normalized distribution of the released energy in the electron-capture decay of $^{95}$Tc to excited states of $^{95}$Mo is compared to that of $^{163}$Ho currently being used for electron-neutrino-mass determination.

We report on the first experimentally determined mass values for $^{169}$Tb, $^{170}$Dy and $^{171}$Dy, as well as the first direct mass measurements of $^{169}$Dy and $^{169\text{-}171}$Ho. For $^{170}$Ho, the two long-lived ground and isomeric states were resolved and their mass measured, yielding an isomer excitation energy of $E_\text{exc}=150.8(54)$ keV. In addition, we have performed independent crosschecks of previous Penning-trap values obtained for $^{167\text{,} 168}$Tb and $^{167\text{,} 168}$Dy. We have extended the systematics of two-neutron separation energies to the neutron midshell at $N=104$ in all of the studied isotopic chains. Our updated and new mass measurements provide better constraints for the neutron-capture reaction rates relevant to the astrophysical rapid neutron capture (r) process. The r-process abundances calculated with the new mass values seem to produce a steeper minimum at A=170 and differ by around 15-30\% from the abundances computed with the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 values.

A more precise value for the mass of $^{84}$Sr is essential for providing potential indications of physics beyond the Standard Model through high-precision isotope shift measurements of Sr atomic transition frequencies. The mass excess of $^{84}$Sr was refined to be -80649.229(37) keV/c$^2$ from high-precision cyclotron-frequency-ratio measurements with a relative precision of 4.8$\times$10$^{-10}$. The obtained mass-excess value is in agreement with the adopted value in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020, but is 30 times more precise. With this new value, we confirm the previously observed nonlinearity in the study of the isotope shift of strontium. Moreover, the double-beta ($2β^{+}$) decay $Q$ value of $^{84}$Sr was directly determined to be 1790.115(37) keV, and the precision was improved by a factor of 30.

For $^{122}$Ag, there was no indication of a proposed third long-lived state. The results for the $N=49$ nucleus $^{84}$Br and isomers close to doubly magic $^{132}$Sn have been compared to the shell-model and the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model calculations.

The order of the long-lived states in $^{104}$Nb was unambiguously established. The trend in two-neutron separation energies around the $N=66$ neutron midshell appeared to be steeper with respect to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 extrapolations for the $_{39}$Y and $_{40}$Zr isotopic chains and less steep for the $_{41}$Nb chain, indicating a possible gap opening around $Z=40$. The experimental results were compared to the BSkG2 model calculations performed with and without vibrational and rotational corrections. All of them predict two low-lying minima for $^{106}$Zr. While the unaltered BSkG2 model fails to predict the trend in two-neutron separation energies, selecting the more deformed minima in calculations and removing the vibrational correction, the calculations are more in line with experimental data. The same is also true for the $2^+_1$ excitation energies and differences in charge radii in the Zr isotopes. The results stress the importance of improved treatment of collective corrections in large-scale models and further development of beyond-mean-field techniques.

The first direct determination of the ground-state-to-ground-state ${β^{-}}$-decay $Q$-value of $^{77}$As to $^{77}$Se was performed by measuring their atomic mass difference utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. The resulting $Q$-value is 684.463(70) keV, representing a remarkable 24-fold improvement in precision compared to the value reported in the most recent Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2020). With the significant reduction of the uncertainty of the ground-state-to-ground-state $Q$-value and knowledge of the excitation energies in $^{77}$Se from $γ$-ray spectroscopy, the ground-state-to-excited-state $Q$-value of the transition $^{77}$As (3/2$^{-}$, ground state) $\rightarrow$ $^{77}$Se$^{*}$ (5/2$^{+}$, 680.1035(17) keV) was refined to be 4.360(70) keV. We confirm that this potential low $Q$-value ${β^{-}}$-decay transition for neutrino mass determination is energetically allowed at a confidence level of about 60$σ$. Nuclear shell-model calculations with two well-established effective Hamiltonians were used to estimate the partial half-life for the low $Q$-value transition. The half-life was found to be of the order of 10$^{9}$ years for this first-forbidden non-unique transition, which rules out this candidate a potential source for rare-event experiments searching for the electron antineutrino mass.

The existence of a long-lived isomeric state in $^{76}$Cu has been debated for a long time. We have performed high-precision mass measurements of $^{76}$Cu with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility and confirm the existence of such a isomeric state with an excitation energy $E_x=64.8(25)$ keV. Based on the ratio of detected ground- and isomeric-state ions as a function of time, we show that the isomer is the shorter-living state previously considered as the ground state of $^{76}$Cu. The result can potentially change the conclusions made in previous works related to the spin-parity and charge radius of the $^{76}$Cu ground state. Additionally, the new $^{76}$Cu$(n,γ)$ reaction $Q$-value has an impact on the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process.

We report on new precision mass measurements of neutron-rich $^{137}$Sb and $^{136-142}$I isotopes from the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. We confirm the value from the previous Penning-trap measurement of $^{137}$Sb at the Canadian Penning Trap and therefore rule out the conflicting result from the Experimental Storage Ring. The ground state and isomer in $^{136}$I were resolved and measured directly for the first time. The isomer excitation energy, $E_x = 215.1(43)$ keV, agrees with the literature but is three times more precise. The measurements have improved the precision of the mass values and confirmed previous results in the majority of cases. However, for $^{138,140}$I the results differ by 17(6) keV and 23(12) keV, respectively. This could be explained by an unresolved contamination or different ratio of unresolved isomeric states in the case of $^{140}$I.

High-precision mass measurements of exotic $^{95-97}$Ag isotopes close to the $N = Z$ line have been conducted with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer, with the silver ions produced using the recently commissioned inductively-heated hot cavity catcher laser ion source at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The atomic mass of $^{95}$Ag was directly determined for the first time. In addition, the atomic masses of $β$-decaying 2$^+$ and 8$^+$ states in $^{96}$Ag have been identified and measured for the first time, and the precision of the $^{97}$Ag mass has been improved. The newly measured masses, with a precision of $\approx$ 1 keV/c$^2$, have been used to investigate the $N =$ 50 neutron shell closure confirming it to be robust. Empirical shell-gap and pairing energies determined with the new ground-state mass data are compared with the state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} calculations with various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians. The precise determination of the excitation energy of the $^{96m}$Ag isomer in particular serves as a benchmark for \textit{ab initio} predictions of nuclear properties beyond the ground state, specifically for odd-odd nuclei situated in proximity to the proton dripline below $^{100}$Sn. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and configuration-interaction shell-model (CISM) calculations are compared with the experimental results. All theoretical approaches face challenges to reproduce the trend of nuclear ground-state properties in the silver isotopic chain across the $N =$50 neutron shell and toward the proton drip-line.

The multinucleon transfer (MNT) reaction approach was successfully employed for the first time to measure the isomeric ratios (IRs) of $^{211}$Po (25/2$^+$) isomer and its (9/2$^+$) ground state at the IGISOL facility using a 945 MeV $^{136}$Xe beam impinged on $^{209}$Bi and $^{\rm nat}$Pb targets. The dominant production of isomers compared to the corresponding ground states was consistently revealed in the $α$-decay spectra. Deduced IR of $^{211}$Po populated through the $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb reaction was found to enhance $\approx$1.8-times than observed for $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi. State-of-the-art Langevin-type model calculations have been utilized to estimate the spin distribution of an MNT residue. The computations qualitatively corroborate with the considerable increase in IRs of $^{211}$Po produced from $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb compared to $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi. Theoretical investigations indicate a weak influence of target spin on IRs. The enhancement of the $^{211}$Po isomer in the $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb over $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi can be attributed to the different proton ($p$)-transfer production routes. Estimations demonstrate an increment in the angular momentum transfer, favorable for isomer production, with increasing projectile energy. Comparative analysis indicates the two entrance channel parameters, projectile mass and $p$-transfer channels, strongly influencing the population of the high-spin isomer of $^{211}$Po (25/2$^+$). This is the first experimental and theoretical investigation on the IRs of nuclei produced via different channels of MNT reactions, with the latter quantitatively underestimating the former by a factor of two.

Isomers close to doubly-magic $^{78}_{28}$Ni$_{50}$ provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence near the ${Z=28}$ and ${N=50}$ double shell closure. We report the excitation energy measurement of the $1/2^{+}$ isomer in $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$ through independent high-precision mass measurements with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap and with the ISOLTRAP Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer. We unambiguously place the $1/2^{+}$ isomer at 942(10) keV, slightly below the $5/2^+$ state at 983(3) keV. With the use of state-of-the-art shell-model diagonalizations, complemented with Discrete Non Orthogonal shell-model calculations which are used here the first time to interpret shape coexistence, we find low-lying deformed intruder states, similar to other ${N=49}$ isotones. The $1/2^{+}$ isomer is interpreted as the band-head of a low-lying deformed structure akin to a predicted low-lying deformed band in $^{80}$Zn, and points to shape coexistence in $^{79,80}$Zn similar to the one observed in $^{78}$Ni. The results make a strong case for confirming the claim of shape coexistence in this key region of the nuclear chart.

This differs by 4.5 standard deviations from the extrapolated value used to calculate the isospin-symmetry breaking corrections in the superallowed $β$ decay of $^{26m}$Al. Its corrected $\mathcal{F}t$ value, important for the estimation of $V_{ud}$ in the CKM matrix, is thus shifted by one standard deviation to \qty{3071.4\pm1.0}{\second}.

Excited states in the $T_z = 0, -1$ nuclei $^{62}$Ga and $^{62}$Ge were populated in direct reactions of relativistic radioactive ion beams at the RIBF. Coincident \grays were measured with the DALI2$^+$ array and uniquely assigned to the $A=62$ isobars. In addition, $^{62}$Ge was also studied independently at JYFL-ACCLAB using the ${}^{24}$Mg(${}^{40}$Ca,$2n$)${}^{62}$Ge fusion-evaporation reaction. The first excited $T=1, J^π=2^+$ states in $^{62}$Ga and $^{62}$Ge were identified at $979(1)$ and $965(1)$~keV, respectively, resolving discrepant interpretations in the literature. States beyond the first $2^+$ state in $^{62}$Ge were also identified for the first time in the present work. The results are compared with shell-model calculations in the $fp$ model space. Mirror and triplet energy differences are analyzed in terms of individual charge-symmetry and charge-independence breaking contributions. The MED results confirm the shrinkage of the $p$-orbits' radii when they are occupied by at least one nucleon on average.

We report on the first direct mass measurements of the $^{118,119}$Cd and $^{117-119}$In isotopes performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility using the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. The masses of $^{117}$In and $^{118}$Cd isotopes are in agreement with the literature, while $^{118,119}$In and $^{119}$Cd differ from literature by 49, 13 and 85 keV (6.1, 1.9 and 2.1 standard deviations), respectively. The excitation energy of the $^{118}$In first isomeric state, $E_x = 40.3(25)$ keV, was determined for the first time. The updated mass values removed the fluctuations observed in the two-neutron separation energies and lead to a smoother linear decrease of both isotopic chains. The $\log(ft)$ value for the $^{118}$Cd decay is also found to increase from 3.93(6) to 4.089(8). The reported results indicate an absence of significant structural changes around $N=70$.

We report on the precise mass measurement of the $^{173}$Hf isotope performed at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility using the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. The new mass-excess value, ${\mathrm{ME} = -55390.8(30)}$ keV, is in agreement with the literature while being nine times more precise. The newly determined $^{173}$Hf electron-capture $Q$ value, $Q_{EC} = 1490.2(34)$ keV, allows us to firmly reject the population of an excited state at 1578 keV in $^{173}$Lu and 11 transitions tentatively assigned to the decay of $^{173}$Hf. Our refined mass value of $^{173}$Hf reduces mass-related uncertainties in the reaction rate of $^{174}$Hf$(γ,n)^{173}$Hf. Thus, the rate for the main photodisintegration destruction channel of the $p$ nuclide $^{174}$Hf in the relevant temperature region for the $γ$ process is better constrained.

The $β^-$ decay $Q$-value of $^{136}$Cs ($J^π= 5^+$, $t_{1/2} \approx 13$~days) was measured with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap setup at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The mono-isotopic samples required in the measurements were prepared with a new scheme utilised for the cleaning, based on the coupling of dipolar excitation with Ramsey's method of time-separated oscillatory fields and the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance (PI-ICR) technique. The $Q$ value is determined to be 2536.83(45) keV, which is $\sim$4 times more precise and 11.4(20) keV ($\sim$ 6$σ$) smaller than the adopted value in the most recent Atomic Mass Evaluation AME2020. The daughter, $^{136}$Ba, has a 4$^+$ state at 2544.481(24) keV and a $3^-$ state at 2532.653(23) keV, both of which can potentially be ultralow $Q$-value end-states for the $^{136}$Cs decay. With our new ground-to-ground state $Q$ value, the decay energies to these two states become -7.65(45) keV and 4.18(45) keV, respectively. The former is confirmed to be negative at the level of $\sim$ 17$σ$, which verifies that this transition is not a suitable candidate for neutrino mass determination. On the other hand, the slightly negative $Q$ value makes this transition an interesting candidate for the study of virtual $β$-$γ$ transitions. The decay to the 3$^{-}$ state is validated to have a positive low $Q$ value which makes it a viable candidate for neutrino mass determination. For this transition, we obtained a shell-model-based half-life estimate of $2.1_{-0.8}^{+1.6}\times10^{12}$ yr.

We report on precision mass measurements of $^{113,115,117}$Ru performed with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Accelerator Laboratory of University of Jyväskylä. The phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique was used to resolve the ground and isomeric states in $^{113,115}$Ru and enabled for the first time a measurement of the isomer excitation energies, $E_x(^{113}$Ru$^{m})=100.5(8)$ keV and $E_x(^{115}$Ru$^{m})=129(5)$ keV. The ground state of $^{117}$Ru was measured using the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron-resonance technique. The new mass-excess value for $^{117}$Ru is around 36 keV lower and 7 times more precise than the previous literature value. With the more precise ground-state mass values, the evolution of the two-neutron separation energies is further constrained and a similar trend as predicted by the BSkG1 model is obtained up to the neutron number $N=71$.

$^{180m}$Ta is a naturally abundant quasi-stable nuclide and the longest-lived nuclear isomer known to date. It is of interest for, among others, the search for dark matter, for the development of a gamma laser and for astrophysics. So far, its excitation energy has not been measured directly but has been based on an evaluation of available nuclear reaction data. We have determined the excitation energy of this isomer with high accuracy using the Penning-trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. The determined mass difference between the ground and isomeric states of $^{180}$Ta yields an excitation energy of 76.79(55) keV for $^{180m}$Ta. This is the first direct measurement of the excitation energy and provides a better accuracy than the previous evaluation value, 75.3(14) keV.

The $β$ decays of the ground state (gs) and isomeric state (m) of $^{96}$Y have been studied with the total absorption $γ$-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The separation of the 8$^{+}$ isomeric state from the 0$^{-}$ ground state was achieved thanks to the purification capabilities of the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system. The $β$-intensity distributions of both decays have been independently determined. In the analyses the de-excitation of the 1581.6 keV level in $^{96}$Zr, in which conversion electron emission competes with pair production, has been carefully considered and found to have significant impact on the $β$-detector efficiency, influencing the $β$-intensity distribution obtained. Our results for $^{96\text{gs}}$Y (0$^+$) confirm the large ground state to ground state $β$-intensity probability, although a slightly larger value than reported in previous studies was obtained, amounting to $96.6_{-2.1}^{+0.3}\%$ of the total $β$ intensity. Given that the decay of $^{96\text{gs}}$Y is the second most important contributor to the reactor antineutrino spectrum between 5 and 7 MeV, the impact of the present results on reactor antineutrino summation calculations has been evaluated. In the decay of $^{96\text{m}}$Y (8$^{+}$), previously undetected $β$ intensity in transitions to states above 6 MeV has been observed. This shows the importance of total absorption $γ$-ray spectroscopy measurements of $β$ decays with highly fragmented de-excitation patterns. $^{96\text{m}}$Y (8$^{+}$) is a major contributor to reactor decay heat in uranium-plutonium and thorium-uranium fuels around 10 s after fission pulses, and the newly measured average $β$ and $γ$ energies differ significantly from the previous values in evaluated databases (...)

A precise determination of the atomic mass of $^{75}$As has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. The mass excess is measured to be -73035.519(42) keV/c$^2$, which is a factor of 21 more precise and 1.3(9) keV/c$^2$ lower than the adopted value in the newest Atomic Mass Evaluation (AME2020). This value has been used to determine the ground-state-to-ground-state electron-capture decay $Q$ value of $^{75}$Se and $β^-$ decay $Q$ value of $^{75}$Ge, which are derived to be 866.041(81) keV and 1178.561(65) keV, respectively. Using the nuclear energy-level data of 860.00(40) keV, 865.40(50) keV (final states of electron capture) and 1172.00(60) keV (final state of $β^-$ decay) for the excited states of $^{75}$As$^*$, we have determined the ground-state-to-excited-state $Q$ values for two transitions of $^{75}$Se $\rightarrow$ $^{75}$As$^*$ and one transition of $^{75}$Ge $\rightarrow$ $^{75}$As$^*$. The ground-state-to-excited-state $Q$ values are determined to be 6.04(41) keV, 0.64(51) keV and 6.56(60) keV, respectively, thus confirming that the three low $Q$-value transitions are all energetically valid and one of them is a possible candidate channel for antineutrino mass determination. Furthermore, the ground-state-to-excited-state $Q$ value of transition $^{75}$Se $\rightarrow$ $^{75}$As$^*$ (865.40(50) keV) is revealed to be ultra-low (< 1 keV) and the first-ever confirmed EC transition possessing an ultra-low $Q$ value from direct measurements.

The first direct determination of the ground-state-to-ground-state $Q$ values of the $β^-$ decay $^{76}$As $\rightarrow$ $^{76}$Se and the electron-capture decay $^{155}$Tb $\rightarrow$ $^{155}$Gd was performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. By measuring the atomic mass difference of the decay pairs via the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance (PI-ICR) technique, the $Q$ values of $^{76}$As $\rightarrow$ $^{76}$Se and $^{155}$Tb $\rightarrow$ $^{155}$Gd were determined to be 2959.265(74) keV and 814.94(18) keV, respectively. The precision was increased relative to earlier measurements by factors of 12 and 57, respectively. The new $Q$ values are 1.33 keV and 5 keV lower compared to the values adopted in the most recent Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020. With the newly determined ground-state-to-ground-state $Q$ values combined with the excitation energy from $γ$-ray spectroscopy, the $Q$ values for ground-state-to-excited-state transitions $^{76}$As (ground state) $\rightarrow$ $^{76}$Se$^*$ (2968.4(7) keV) and $^{155}$Tb (ground state) $\rightarrow$ $^{155}$Gd$^*$ (815.731(3) keV) were derived to be -9.13(70) keV and -0.79(18) keV. Thus we have confirmed that both of the $β^{-}$-decay and EC-decay candidate transitions are energetically forbidden at a level of at least 4$σ$, thus definitely excluding these two cases from the list of potential candidates for the search of low-$Q$-value $β^-$ or EC decays to determine the electron-(anti)neutrino mass.

A precise determination of the ground state $^{111}$In ($9/2^+$) electron capture to ground state of $^{111}$Cd ($1/2^+$) $Q$ value has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. A value of 857.63(17) keV was obtained, which is nearly a factor of 20 more precise than the value extracted from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 (AME2020). The high-precision electron-capture $Q$ value measurement along with the nuclear energy level data of 866.60(6) keV, 864.8(3) keV, 855.6(10) keV, and 853.94(7) keV for $^{111}$Cd was used to determine whether the four states are energetically allowed for a potential ultra-low $Q$-value $β^{}$ decay or electron-capture decay. Our results confirm that the excited states of 866.60(6) keV with spin-parity ($J^π$) of 3/2$^{+}$ and 864.8(3) keV with $J^π$ = 3/2$^{+}$ are ruled out due to their deduced electron-capture $Q$ value being smaller than 0 keV at the level of around 20$σ$ and 50$σ$, respectively. Electron-capture decays to the excited states at 853.94(7) keV ($J^π$ = 7/2$^+$) and 855.6(10) keV ($J^π$ = 3/2$^+$), are energetically allowed with $Q$ values of 3.69(19) keV and 2.0(10) keV, respectively. The allowed decay transition $^{111}$In (9/2$^{+}$) $\rightarrow$ $^{111}$Cd (7/2$^{+}$), with a $Q$ value of 3.69(19) keV, is a potential a new candidate for neutrino-mass measurements by future EC experiments featuring new powerful detection technologies. The results show that the indium level $2p_{1/2}$ for this decay branch leads to a significant increase in the number of EC events in the energy region sensitive to the electron neutrino mass.

Based on the measured $Q$-value, precise phase-space factors for $2νββ$ decay and $0νββ$ decay, needed in the half-life predictions, have been calculated. Furthermore, the involved nuclear matrix elements have been computed in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) and the microscopic interacting boson model (IBM-2) frameworks. Finally, predictions for the $2νββ$ decay are given, suggesting a much longer half-life than for the currently observed cases.

Systematic uncertainties that impose limitations on the accuracy of measurements are discussed. It was found out that the phase evolution of the radial motion of ions in a Penning trap during the application of radio-frequency fields leads to a systematic cyclotron frequency shift when more than one ion species is present in the trap during the cyclotron frequency measurement. An analytic expression was derived to correctly account for the shift. Cross-reference mass measurements with carbon-cluster ions have been performed providing the mass-dependent and residual uncertainties.

A value of 364.73(19)~keV was obtained from a measurement of the cyclotron frequency ratio of the decay parent $^{159}$Dy and the decay daughter $^{159}$Tb ions using the novel phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique. The $Q$ values for allowed Gamow-Teller transition to $5/2^-$ and the third-forbidden unique transition to $11/2^+$ state with excitation energies of 363.5449(14)~keV and 362.050(40)~keV in $^{159}$Tb were determined to be 1.18(19) keV and 2.68(19) keV, respectively. The high-precision $Q$ value of transition $3/2^-\to 5/2^-$ from this work, revealing itself as the lowest electron-capture $Q$ value, is utilized to unambiguously characterise all the possible lines that are present in its electron capture spectrum. {
We performed atomic many-body calculations for both transitions to determine electron-capture probabilities from various atomic orbitals, and found an order of magnitude enhancement in the event rates near the end-point of energy spectrum in the transition to the $5/2^-$ nuclear excited state, which can become very interesting once the experimental challenges of identifying decays into excited states are overcome. The transition to the $11/2^+$ state is strongly suppressed and found unsuitable for measuring the neutrino mass. These results show that the electron capture in the $^{159}$Dy atom, going to the $5/2^-$ state of the $^{159}$Tb nucleus, %\textcolor{red} {is a new candidate which may open the way to determine the electron-neutrino mass in the sub-eV region by studying EC. Further experimental feasibility studies, including coincidence measurements with realistic detectors, will be of great interest.} }

The $Q$-value was measured to be 4343.596(75)~keV, which is more than a 50-fold improvement in precision compared to the value in the most recent Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020. Furthermore, the new $Q$-value was found to be 12.4(40)~keV (3.1 $σ$) lower. With the significant reduction of the uncertainty of the ground-state to ground-state $Q$-value value combined with the level scheme of $^{72}$Ge from $γ$-ray spectroscopy, we confirm that the five potential ultra-low $Q$-value ${β^{+}}$-decay or electron capture transitions are energetically forbidden, thus precluding all the transitions as possible candidates for the electron neutrino mass determination. However, the discovery of small negative $Q$-values opens up the possibility to use $^{72}$As for the study of virtual $β$-$γ$ transitions.

While consistent with the treatment of proton-neutron, proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing on an equal footing, the reduction in size for the isomer is observed to be of a significantly larger magnitude than that expected from both shell model and ab-initio calculations.

Isomeric states in $^{128}$In and $^{130}$In have been studied with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the IGISOL facility. By employing novel ion manipulation techniques, different states were separated and masses of six beta-decaying states were measured. JYFLTRAP was also used to select the ions of interest for identification at a post-trap decay spectroscopy station. A new beta-decaying high-spin isomer feeding the $15^-$ isomer in $^{128}$Sn has been discovered in $^{128}$In at $1797.6(20)$ keV. Shell-model calculations employing a CD-Bonn potential re-normalized with the perturbative G-matrix approach suggest this new isomer to be a $16^+$ spin-trap isomer. In $^{130}$In, the lowest-lying $(10^-)$ isomeric state at $58.6(82)$ keV was resolved for the first time using the phase-imaging ion cyclotron resonance technique. The energy difference between the $10^-$ and $1^-$ states in $^{130}$In, stemming from parallel/antiparallel coupling of $(π0g_{9/2}^{-1})\otimes(ν0h_{11/2}^{-1})$, has been found to be around 200 keV lower than predicted by the shell model. Precise information on the energies of the excited states determined in this work is crucial for producing new improved effective interactions for the nuclear shell model description of nuclei near $^{132}$Sn.

In $β$-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed $γ$-ray emission. In this work we revisit the $4πγ-β$ method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the $β$-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large ground state branches. The method is relevant for nuclear structure studies as well. Pertinent formulae are revised and extended to the special case of $β$-delayed neutron emitters, and the robustness of the method is demonstrated with synthetic data. We apply it to a number of measured decays that serve as test cases and discuss the features of the method. Finally, we obtain ground state feeding intensities with reduced uncertainty for four relevant decays that will allow future improvements in antineutrino spectrum and decay heat calculations using the summation method.

It is the first direct determination of this $Q$-value and its value of 268.66(30)\,keV is a factor of three more precise than the currently adopted $Q$-value in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2016. Moreover, the $Q$-value deduced from the $β$-decay endpoint energy has been found to deviate from our result by approximately 6 standard deviations. The measurement confirms that the first-forbidden unique $β^-$-decay transition $^{135}\textrm{Cs}(7/2^+)\to\,^{135}\textrm{Ba}(11/2^-)$ is a candidate for antineutrino-mass measurements with an ultra-low $Q$-value of $0.44(31)$ keV. The decays of the $β$-delayed neutron emitters $^{137}$I and $^{95}$Rb have been studied with the total absorption $γ$-ray spectroscopy technique. The purity of the beams provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the ion guide isotope separator on-line facility in Jyväskylä allowed us to carry out a campaign of isotopically pure measurements with the decay total absorption $γ$-ray spectrometer, a segmented detector composed of eighteen NaI(Tl) modules. The contamination coming from the interaction of neutrons with the spectrometer has been carefully studied, and we have tested the use of time differences between prompt $γ$-rays and delayed neutron interactions to eliminate this source of contamination. Due to the sensitivity of our spectrometer, we have found a significant amount of $β$-intensity to states above the neutron separation energy that de-excite by $γ$-rays, comparable to the neutron emission probability. The competition between $γ$ de-excitation and neutron emission has been compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations, and it can be understood as a nuclear structure effect. In addition, we have studied the impact of the $β$-intensity distributions determined in this work on reactor decay heat and reactor antineutrino spectrum summation calculations. The robustness of our results is demonstrated by a thorough study of uncertainties, and with the reproduction of the spectra of the individual modules and the module-multiplicity gated spectra. This work represents the state-of-the-art of our analysis methodology for segmented total absorption spectrometers.

A significant fraction of stars between 7-11 solar masses are thought to become supernovae, but the explosion mechanism is unclear. The answer depends critically on the rate of electron capture on $^{20}$Ne in the degenerate oxygen-neon stellar core. However, due to the unknown strength of the transition between the ground states of $^{20}$Ne and $^{20}$F, it has not previously been possible to fully constrain the rate. By measuring the transition, we have established that its strength is exceptionally large and enhances the capture rate by several orders of magnitude. This has a decisive impact on the evolution of the core, increasing the likelihood that the star is (partially) disrupted by a thermonuclear explosion rather than collapsing to form a neutron star. Importantly, our measurement resolves the last remaining nuclear physics uncertainty in the final evolution of degenerate oxygen-neon stellar cores, allowing future studies to address the critical role of convection, which at present is poorly understood.

The $β$ intensity distributions of the decays of $^{100\text{gs},100\text{m}}$Nb and $^{102\text{gs},102\text{m}}$Nb have been determined using the Total Absorption $γ$-Ray Spectroscopy technique. The JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system was employed to disentangle the isomeric states involved, lying very close in energy, in a campaign of challenging measurements performed with the Decay Total Absorption $γ$-ray Spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyväskylä. The low-spin isomeric state of each niobium case was populated through the decay of the zirconium parent, that was treated as a contaminant. We have applied a method to extract this contamination, and additionally we have obtained $β$ intensity distributions for these zirconium decays. The $β$-strength distributions evaluated with these results were compared with calculations in quasiparticle random-phase approximation, suggesting a prolate configuration for the ground states of $^{100,102}$Zr. The footprint of the Pandemonium effect was found when comparing our results for the analyses of the niobium isotopes with previous decay data. The $β$-intensities of the decay of $^{102\text{m}}$Nb were obtained for the first time. A careful evaluation of the uncertainties was carried out, and the consistency of our results was validated taking advantage of the segmentation of our spectrometer. The final results were used as input in reactor summation calculations. A large impact on antineutrino spectrum calculations was already reported and here we detail the significant impact on decay heat calculations.

The MORA (Matter's Origin from the RadioActivity of trapped and oriented ions) project aims at measuring with unprecedented precision the D correlation in the nuclear beta decay of trapped and oriented ions. The D correlation offers the possibility to search for new CP-violating interactions, complementary to searches done at the LHC and with Electric Dipole Moments. Technically, MORA uses an innovative in-trap orientation method which combines the high trapping efficiency of a transparent Paul trap with laser orientation techniques. The trapping, detection, and laser setups are under development, for first tests at the Accelerator laboratory, JYFL, in the coming years.

Isomeric yield ratios for the odd-$A$ isotopes of $^{119-127}$Cd and $^{119-127}$In from 25-MeV proton-induced fission on natural uranium have been measured at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap, by employing the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance technique. With the significantly improved mass resolution of this novel method isomeric states separated by 140 keV from the ground state, and with half-lives of the order of 500 ms, could be resolved. This opens the door for obtaining new information on low-lying isomers, of importance for nuclear structure, fission and astrophysics. In the present work the experimental isomeric yield ratios are used for the estimation of the root-mean-square angular momentum ($J_\mathrm{rms}$) of the primary fragments. The results show a dependency on the number of unpaired protons and neutrons, where the odd-$Z$ In isotopes carry larger angular momenta. The deduced values of $J_\mathrm{rms}$ display a linear relationship when compared with the electric quadrupole moments of the fission products.

DTAS is a segmented total absorption γ-ray spectrometer developed for the DESPEC experiment at FAIR. It is composed of up to eighteen NaI(Tl) crystals. In this work we study the performance of this detector with laboratory sources and also under real experimental conditions. We present a procedure to reconstruct offline the sum of the energy deposited in all the crystals of the spectrometer, which is complicated by the effect of NaI(Tl) light-yield non-proportionality. The use of a system to correct for time variations of the gain in individual detector modules, based on a light pulse generator, is demonstrated. We describe also an event-based method to evaluate the summing-pileup electronic distortion in segmented spectrometers. All of this allows a careful characterization of the detector with Monte Carlo simulations that is needed to calculate the response function for the analysis of total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy data. Special attention was paid to the interaction of neutrons with the spectrometer, since they are a source of contamination in studies of \b{eta}-delayed neutron emitting nuclei.

We report the first detection of the second-forbidden, non-unique, $2^+\rightarrow 0^+$, ground-state transition in the $β$ decay of $^{20}$F. A low-energy, mass-separated $^{20}\rm{F}^+$ beam produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyväskylä, Finland, was implanted in a thin carbon foil and the $β$ spectrum measured using a magnetic transporter and a plastic-scintillator detector. The $β$-decay branching ratio inferred from the measurement is $b_β = [ 0.41\pm 0.08\textrm{(stat)}\pm 0.07\textrm{(sys)}] \times 10^{-5}$ corresponding to $\log ft = 10.89(11)$, making this one of the strongest second-forbidden, non-unique $β$ transitions ever measured. The experimental result is supported by shell-model calculations and has significant implications for the final evolution of stars that develop degenerate oxygen-neon cores. Using the new experimental data, we argue that the astrophysical electron-capture rate on $^{20}$Ne is now known to within better than 25% at the relevant temperatures and densities.

Background: $β$-delayed multiple neutron emission has been observed for some nuclei with A$\leq$100, with $^{100}$Rb being the heaviest $β$2n emitter measured to date. So far, only 25 P$_{2n}$ values have been determined for the $\sim$300 nuclei that may decay in this way. Accordingly, it is of interest to measure P$_{2n}$ values for the other possible multiple neutron emitters throughout the chart of the nuclides. It is of particular interest to make such measurement for nuclei with A$>$100 to test the predictions of theoretical models and simulation tools for the decays of heavy nuclei in the region of very neutron-rich nuclei. In addition, the decay properties of these nuclei are fundamental for the understanding of astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes such as the $r$-process, and safety inputs for nuclear reactors. Purpose: To determine for the first time the two neutron branching ratio, P$_{2n}$ value, for $^{136}$Sb through a direct neutron measurement, and to provide precise P$_{1n}$ values for $^{136}$Sb and $^{136}$Te. Method: Pure beams were provided by the JYFLTRAP at the IGISOL facility of the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The purified ions were implanted into a moving tape at the end of the beam line. The detection setup consisted of a plastic scintillator placed right behind the implantation point, and the BELEN detector, based on neutron counters embedded in a polyethylene matrix. The analysis was based on the study of the $β$- and neutron- growth-and-decay curves and the $β$-one-neutron and $β$-two-neutron time correlations. Results: The P$_{2n}$ value of $^{136}$Sb was found to be 0.14(3)\% and the measured P$_{1n}$ values for $^{136}$Sb and $^{136}$Te were found to be 32.2(15)\% and 1.47(6)\%, respectively. The measured P$_{2n}$ value is a factor 44 smaller than predicted by the FRDM+QRPA model used for $r$-process calculations.

The rare-earth peak in the $r$-process abundance pattern depends sensitively on both the astrophysical conditions and subtle changes in nuclear structure in the region. This work takes an important step elucidating the nuclear structure and reducing the uncertainties in $r$-process calculations via precise atomic mass measurements at the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap. $^{158}$Nd, $^{160}$Pm, $^{162}$Sm, and $^{164-166}$Gd have been measured for the first time and the precisions for $^{156}$Nd, $^{158}$Pm, $^{162,163}$Eu, $^{163}$Gd, and $^{164}$Tb have been improved considerably. Nuclear structure has been probed via two-neutron separation energies $S_{2n}$ and neutron pairing energy metrics $D_n$. The data do not support the existence of a subshell closure at $N=100$. Neutron pairing has been found to be weaker than predicted by theoretical mass models. The impact on the calculated $r$-process abundances has been studied. Substantial changes resulting in a smoother abundance distribution and a better agreement with the solar $r$-process abundances are observed.

In addition $^{91}$Rb was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam {\it et al.} assuming that this decay was well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results show that both decays were suffering from the {\it Pandemonium} effect and that the results of Rudstam {\it et al.} should be renormalized. The relative impact of the studied decays in the prediction of the decay heat and antineutrino spectrum from reactors has been evaluated.

In this work the new DTAS spectrometer in coincidence with a cylindrical plastic \b{eta} detector has been employed. The \b{eta}-intensity to the ground state obtained from the analysis is in good agreement with previous high-resolution measurements. However, differences in the feeding to the first excited state as well as weak feeding to a new level at high excitation energy have been deduced from this experiment. Theoretical calculations performed in the quasiparticle random- phase approximation (QRPA) framework are also reported. Comparison of these calculations with our measurement serves as a benchmark for calculations of the double \b{eta}-decay of 100 Mo.

The isobaric multiplet mass equation for the $T=2$ quintet at $A=52$ has been studied employing the new mass values. No significant breakdown (beyond the $3σ$ level) of the quadratic form of the IMME was observed ($χ^2/n=2.4$). The cubic coefficient was 6.0(32) keV ($χ^2/n=1.1$). The excitation energies for the isomer and the $T=2$ isobaric analogue state in $^{52}$Co have been determined to be 374(13) keV and 2922(13) keV, respectively. In this work we report on the Monte Carlo study performed to understand and reproduce experimental measurements of a new plastic \b{eta}-detector with cylindrical geometry. Since energy deposition simulations differ from the experimental measurements for such a geometry, we show how the simulation of production and transport of optical photons does allow one to obtain the shapes of the experimental spectra. Moreover, taking into account the computational effort associated with this kind of simulation, we develop a method to convert the simulations of energy deposited into light collected, depending only on the interaction point in the detector. This method represents a useful solution when extensive simulations have to be done, as in the case of the calculation of the response function of the spectrometer in a total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy analysis.
