Handling multiplicity without losing much power has been a persistent challenge in various fields that often face the necessity of managing numerous statistical tests simultaneously. Recently, $p$-value combination methods based on heavy-tailed distributions, such as a Cauchy distribution, have received much attention for their ability to handle multiplicity without the prescribed knowledge of the dependence structure. This paper delves into these types of $p$-value combinations through the lens of extreme value theory. Distributions with regularly varying tails, a subclass of heavy tail distributions, are found to be useful in constructing such $p$-value combinations. Three $p$-value combination statistics (sum, max cumulative sum, and max) are introduced, of which left tail probabilities are shown to be approximately uniform when the global null is true. The primary objective of this paper is to bridge the gap between current developments in $p$-value combination methods and the literature on extreme value theory, while also offering guidance on selecting the calibrator and its associated parameters.

In unit root testing, a piecewise locally stationary process is adopted to accommodate nonstationary errors that can have both smooth and abrupt changes in second- or higher-order properties. Under this framework, the limiting null distributions of the conventional unit root test statistics are derived and shown to contain a number of unknown parameters. To circumvent the difficulty of direct consistent estimation, we propose to use the dependent wild bootstrap to approximate the non-pivotal limiting null distributions and provide a rigorous theoretical justification for bootstrap consistency. The proposed method is compared through finite sample simulations with the recolored wild bootstrap procedure, which was developed for errors that follow a heteroscedastic linear process. Further, a combination of autoregressive sieve recoloring with the dependent wild bootstrap is shown to perform well. The validity of the dependent wild bootstrap in a nonstationary setting is demonstrated for the first time, showing the possibility of extensions to other inference problems associated with locally stationary processes.

The generalized Fibonacci cube $Q_d(f)$ is the subgraph of the $d$-cube $Q_d$ induced on the set of all strings of length $d$ that do not contain $f$ as a substring. It is proved that if $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$ then $|f|=|f'|$. The key tool to prove this result is a result of Guibas and Odlyzko about the autocorrelation polynomial associated to a binary string. It is also proved that there exist pairs of strings $f, f'$ such that $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$, where $|f| \ge \frac{2}{3}(d+1)$ and $f'$ cannot be obtained from $f$ by its reversal or binary complementation. Strings $f$ and $f'$ with $|f|=|f'|=d-1$ for which $Q_d(f) \cong Q_d(f')$ are characterized.
