This paper reports a study of the experimental signatures of hierarchical sectors beyond the Standard Model characterized by a flavor-violating heavy vector and a set of light pseudo-Goldstone bosons $a_{1,2}$, spanning a large range of lifetimes. The non-minimal scalar spectrum triggers novel $B$ decays into multiple leptons that would have escaped the reach of current searches. Novel displaced vertex analyses at LHCb are therefore discussed to probe the hierarchical new physics, extending the scope of the tracking system of the detector. Additionally, the reach of the proposed CODEX-b experiment is studied as well. By exploiting the use of tracks only reconstructed in subsystems of the detector at the high-level LHCb trigger, ${\mathcal{B}(B_s^0\to a_1 a_2) < 10^{-8}}$ and ${\mathcal{B}(B^+\to K^+ a_1 a_2) < 10^{-9}}$ could be reached in the muon channel across seven orders of magnitude in the lifetime of the Goldstone bosons. Correspondingly, heavy-light particle couplings of order $\lesssim 1$ could be tested, potentially ruling out composite Higgs scenarios where the heavy and light sectors couple strongly.

In this Snowmass contribution we present a comprehensive status update on the progress and plans for the proposed CODEX-b detector, intended to search for long-lived particles beyond the Standard Model. We review the physics case for the proposal and present recent progress on optimization strategies for the detector and shielding design, as well as the development of new fast and full simulation frameworks. A summary of the technical design for a smaller demonstrator detector (CODEX-$β$) for the upcoming Run~3 of the LHC is also discussed, alongside the road towards realization of the full experiment at the High-Luminosity LHC.

Long-lived particles (LLPs) are highly motivated signals of physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) with great discovery potential and unique experimental challenges. The LLP search programme made great advances during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), but many important regions of signal space remain unexplored. Dedicated triggers are crucial to improve the potential of LLP searches, and their development and expansion is necessary for the full exploitation of the new data. The public discussion of triggers has therefore been a relevant theme in the recent LLP literature, in the meetings of the LLP@LHC Community workshop and in the respective experiments. This paper documents the ideas collected during talks and discussions at these Workshops, benefiting as well from the ideas under development by the trigger community within the experimental collaborations. We summarise the theoretical motivations of various LLP scenarios leading to highly elusive signals, reviewing concrete ideas for triggers that could greatly extend the reach of the LHC experiments. We thus expect this document to encourage further thinking for both the phenomenological and experimental communities, as a stepping stone to further develop the LLP@LHC physics programme.

In this paper, we discuss the sensitivity of the LHCb experiment to search for this dark baryon, covering different types of topology and giving prospects for Runs 3 and 4 of the LHC, as well as for the proposed Phase-II Upgrade. We show that the LHCb experiment can cover the entire mass range of the hypothetical dark baryon.

Abstract:
We study the possibility of observing a light pseudo-scalar $a$ at LHCb. We target the mass region $1 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 60$ GeV and various decay channels, some of which have never been considered before: muon pairs, tau pairs, $D$ meson pairs, and di-photon. We interpret the results in the context of models of 4D Composite Higgs and Partial Compositeness in particular.

It can, however, also disintegrate into a $π^-$ meson and a $Λ_c^+$ baryon via $s$ quark decay or via $cs\to d c$ weak scattering. The interplay between the latter two processes governs the size of the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}$$(Ξ_c^0\to π^-Λ_c^+)$, first measured here to be $(0.55\pm 0.02 \pm 0.18)$%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and second systematic. This result is compatible with the larger of the theoretical predictions that connect models of hyperon decays using partially conserved axial currents and SU(3) symmetry with those involving the heavy-quark expansion and heavy-quark symmetry. In addition, the branching fraction of the normalization channel, ${\cal{B}}(Ξ_c^+\to p K^- π^+) = (1.135 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.387)$% is measured.

The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be ${Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8}$ MeV, ${Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1}$ MeV and ${Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5}$ MeV. The natural width of the $Ω_b(6350)^-$ peak is $1.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1$ MeV, which is 2.5$σ$ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6$σ$ to 7.2$σ$. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the $Ω_b(6316)^-$ and $Ω_b(6330)^-$ peaks are reduced to 2.1$σ$ and 2.6$σ$ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5$σ$. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited $Ω_b^-$ resonances.

We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in $b$-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio $|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|$, where the subscript on $A$ indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed $Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement $|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

This document presents the physics case and ancillary studies for the proposed CODEX-b long-lived particle (LLP) detector, as well as for a smaller proof-of-concept demonstrator detector, CODEX-$β$, to be operated during Run 3 of the LHC. Our development of the CODEX-b physics case synthesizes `top-down' and `bottom-up' theoretical approaches, providing a detailed survey of both minimal and complete models featuring LLPs. Several of these models have not been studied previously, and for some others we amend studies from previous literature: In particular, for gluon and fermion-coupled axion-like particles. We moreover present updated simulations of expected backgrounds in CODEX-b's actively shielded environment, including the effects of shielding propagation uncertainties, high-energy tails and variation in the shielding design. Initial results are also included from a background measurement and calibration campaign. A design overview is presented for the CODEX-$β$ demonstrator detector, which will enable background calibration and detector design studies. Finally, we lay out brief studies of various design drivers of the CODEX-b experiment and potential extensions of the baseline design, including the physics case for a calorimeter element, precision timing, event tagging within LHCb, and precision low-momentum tracking.

The LHCb detector provides accurate vertex reconstruction and hadronic particle identification, which make the experiment an ideal place to look for light long-lived particles (LLP) decaying into Standard Model (SM) hadrons. In contrast with the typical search strategy relying on energetic jets and a high multiplicity of tracks from the LLP decay, LHCb can identify LLPs in exclusive, specific hadronic final states. To illustrate the idea, we study the sensitivity of LHCb to an exotic Higgs decay $h\to SS$, followed by the displaced decay of GeV-scale scalars into charged kaons $S\to K^+K^-$. We show that the reconstruction of kaon vertices in narrow invariant mass windows can efficiently eliminate the combinatorial backgrounds from $B$-meson decays. While the same signal is extremely difficult to probe in the existing displaced jet searches at ATLAS/CMS, the LHCb search we propose can probe the branching ratio BR$(h\to SS)$ down to $0.1\%$ ($0.02\%$) level with $15$ ($300$) fb$^{-1}$ of data. We also apply this projected bound to two scenarios with Higgs portal couplings, where the scalar mediator $S$ either couples to a) the SM quarks only, or b) to both quarks and leptons in the minimal flavor violation paradigm. In both scenarios we compare the reach of our proposed search with the expected constraints from ATLAS and CMS on the invisible Higgs width and with the constraints from rare B-decays studies at LHCb. We find that for 1 GeV $< m_S < $ 2 GeV and $0.5~{\rm mm} \lesssim c τ\lesssim 10$ mm our proposed search will be competitive with the ATLAS and CMS projections, while at the same time providing crucial information of the hadronic interactions of $S$, which can not be obtained from the {\it indirect} measurement of the Higgs invisible width.

The charm baryons are reconstructed through the decays $Λ_c^+\to pK^-π^+$, $Ξ_c^+\to pK^-π^+$ and $Ξ_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+$, and originate from semimuonic decays of beauty baryons. The lifetimes are measured relative to that of the $D^+$ meson, and are determined to be \begin{align*}
τ_{Λ_c^+} &= 203.5\pm1.0\pm1.3\pm1.4~{\rm fs}, \newline
τ_{Ξ_c^+} &= 456.8\pm3.5\pm2.9\pm3.1~{\rm fs}, \newline
τ_{Ξ_c^0} &= 154.5\pm1.7\pm1.6\pm1.0~{\rm fs}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the $D^+$ lifetime. The measurements are approximately 3--4 times more precise than the current world average values. The $Λ_c^+$ and $Ξ_c^+$ lifetimes are in agreement with previous measurements; however, the $Ξ_c^0$ baryon lifetime is approximately 3.3 standard deviations larger than the world average value.

Particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) can generically have lifetimes that are long compared to SM particles at the weak scale. When produced at experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, these long-lived particles (LLPs) can decay far from the interaction vertex of the primary proton-proton collision. Such LLP signatures are distinct from those of promptly decaying particles that are targeted by the majority of searches for new physics at the LHC, often requiring customized techniques to identify, for example, significantly displaced decay vertices, tracks with atypical properties, and short track segments. Given their non-standard nature, a comprehensive overview of LLP signatures at the LHC is beneficial to ensure that possible avenues of the discovery of new physics are not overlooked. Here we report on the joint work of a community of theorists and experimentalists with the ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experiments --- as well as those working on dedicated experiments such as MoEDAL, milliQan, MATHUSLA, CODEX-b, and FASER --- to survey the current state of LLP searches at the LHC, and to chart a path for the development of LLP searches into the future, both in the upcoming Run 3 and at the High-Luminosity LHC. The work is organized around the current and future potential capabilities of LHC experiments to generally discover new LLPs, and takes a signature-based approach to surveying classes of models that give rise to LLPs rather than emphasizing any particular theory motivation. We develop a set of simplified models; assess the coverage of current searches; document known, often unexpected backgrounds; explore the capabilities of proposed detector upgrades; provide recommendations for the presentation of search results; and look towards the newest frontiers, namely high-multiplicity "dark showers", highlighting opportunities for expanding the LHC reach for these signals.

The production fractions of $\overline{B}_s^0$ and $Λ_b^0$ hadrons, normalized to the sum of $B^-$ and $\overline{B}^0$ fractions, are measured in 13 TeV pp collisions using data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.67/fb. These ratios, averaged over the $b$-hadron transverse momenta from 4 to 25 GeV and pseudorapidity from 2 to 5, are $0.122 \pm 0.006$ for $\overline{B}_s^0$, and $0.259 \pm 0.018$ for $Λ_b^0$, where the uncertainties arise from both statistical and systematic sources. The $Λ_b^0$ ratio depends strongly on transverse momentum, while the $\overline{B}_s^0$ ratio shows a mild dependence. Neither ratio shows variations with pseudorapidity. The measurements are made using semileptonic decays to minimize theoretical uncertainties. In addition, the ratio of $D^+$ to $D^0$ mesons produced in the sum of $\overline{B}^0$ and $B^-$ semileptonic decays is determined as $0.359\pm0.006\pm 0.009$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic.

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics.

We assess the impact of searches at flavor factories for new neutral resonances that couple to both photons and gluons. These are well motivated by "heavy axion" solutions of the strong CP problem and by frameworks addressing both Dark Matter and the Higgs hierarchy problem. We use LHCb public diphoton data around the Bs mass to derive the current best limit on these resonances for masses between 4.9 and 6.3 GeV. We estimate that a future LHCb dedicated search would test an axion decay constant of O(TeV) for axion masses in the few-to-tens of GeV, being fully complementary to the low mass ATLAS and CMS searches. We also derive the impact of BABAR searches based on Upsilon decays and the future Belle-II reach.

The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

The resonant structure of the reaction $\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-$ is studied using data from 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb experiment, one-third at 7 Tev center-of-mass energy and the remainder at 8 Tev. The invariant mass of the $π^+π^-$ pair and three decay angular distributions are used to determine the fractions of the resonant and non-resonant components. Six interfering $π^+π^-$ states: $ρ(770)$, $f_0(500)$, $f_2(1270)$, $ρ(1450)$, $ω(782)$ and $ρ(1700)$ are required to give a good description of invariant mass spectra and decay angular distributions. The positive and negative CP fractions of each of the resonant final states are determined. The $f_0(980)$ meson is not seen and the upper limit on its presence, compared with the observed $f_0(500)$ rate, is inconsistent with a model of tetraquark substructure for these scalar mesons at the eight standard deviation level. In the $q\overline{q}$ model, the absolute value of the mixing angle between the $f_0(980)$ and the $f_0(500)$ scalar mesons is limited to be less than $17^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level.

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

The interference between the K+K- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in B_s -> J/psi K+K- decays with the K+K- pairs in the region around the phi(1020) resonance is used to determine the variation of the difference of the strong phase between these amplitudes as a function of K+K- invariant mass. Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurements in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, we conclude that the B_s mass eigenstate that is almost CP =+1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP =-1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s == Gamma_L -Gamma_H to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase phi_s to be close to zero rather than pi. These conclusions are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Abstract:
A search for the decays Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu- is performed with 0.37 fb^-1 of pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011. The upper limits on the branching fractions are BR (Bs -> mu+ mu-) < 1.6 x 10^-8 and BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 3.6 x 10^-9 at 95% confidence level. A combination of these results with the LHCb limits obtained with the 2010 dataset leads to BR…

Abstract:
Branching fractions of the decays $H_b\to H_cπ^-π^+π^-$ relative to $H_b\to H_cπ^-$ are presented, where $H_b$ ($H_c$) represents B^0-bar($D^+$), $B^-$ ($D^0$), B_s^0-bar ($D_s^+$) and $Λ_b^0$ ($Λ_c^+$). The measurements are performed with the LHCb detector using 35${\rm pb^{-1}}$ of data collected at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The ratios of branching fractions are measured to be

B(B^0-bar -> D^+π^-π^+π^-)/ B(B^0-bar -> D^+π^-) = 2.38\pm0.11\pm0.21
B(B^- -> D^0π^-π^+π^-) / B(B^- -> D^0π^-) = 1.27\pm0.06\pm0.11
B(B_s^0-bar -> D_s^+π^-π^+π^-) / B(B_s^0-bar -> D_s^+π^-) = 2.01\pm0.37\pm0.20
B(Λ_b^0->Λ_c^+π^-π^+π^-) / B(Λ_b^0 -> Λ_c^+π^-) = 1.43\pm0.16\pm0.13.
We also report measurements of partial decay rates of these decays to excited charm hadrons. These results are of comparable or higher precision than existing measurements.

Abstract:
Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the hadronic decay Bs -> J/psi f0(980) is observed. This CP eigenstate mode could be used to measure mixing-induced CP violation in the B_s system. Using a fit to the pi+ pi- mass spectrum with interfering resonances gives R_{f0/phi} = [Gamma(Bs -> J/psi f0, f0 -> pi+ pi-)]/[Gamma(Bs -> J/p…
