QCD gives rise to a rich spectrum of excited baryon states. Understanding their internal structure is important for many areas of nuclear physics, such as nuclear forces, dense matter, and neutrino-nucleus interactions. Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are an established tool for characterizing the QCD structure of the ground-state nucleon. They are used to create 3D tomographic images of the quark/gluon structure and quantify the mechanical properties such as the distribution of mass, angular momentum and forces in the system. Transition GPDs extend these concepts to $N \rightarrow N^\ast$ transitions and can be used to characterize the 3D structure and mechanical properties of baryon resonances. They can be probed in high-momentum-transfer exclusive electroproduction processes with resonance transitions $e + N \rightarrow e' + M + N^\ast$, such as deeply-virtual Compton scattering ($M = γ$) or meson production ($M = π, K$, $etc.$), and in related photon/hadron-induced processes. This White Paper describes a research program aiming to explore baryon resonance structure with transition GPDs. This includes the properties and interpretation of the transition GPDs, theoretical methods for structures and processes, first experimental results from JLab 12 GeV, future measurements with existing and planned facilities (JLab detector and energy upgrades, COMPASS/AMBER, EIC, EicC, J-PARC, LHC ultraperihperal collisions), and the theoretical and experimental developments needed to realize this program.

We revisit the application of the Froissart-Gribov (FG) projections in the analysis of amplitudes for the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), providing essential information on generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The pivotal role of these projections in a systematic description of a hadron's response to the string-like QCD probes characterised by different values of angular momentum $J$ is emphasised. For the first time, we establish a relationship between the FG projections and GPDs for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ targets, and we investigate these quantities in various GPD models. Finally, we provide the first numerical estimates for the FG projections based on the DVCS amplitudes directly extracted from experimental data. We argue the method of the FG projections deserves a broad application in the DVCS phenomenology.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

For the four lowest-lying nucleon resonances, $Δ(1232)$, $P_{11}(1440)$, $D_{13}(1520)$, and $S_{11}(1535)$, we express the DVCS amplitude in the Bjorken limit in terms of corresponding nucleon-to-resonance GPDs. Building upon the knowledge of the well studied electromagnetic nucleon-to-resonance transition form factors, which map the quark charge densities in transverse position space, the corresponding GPDs will open the prospect to also access the longitudinal momentum distributions of quarks in the transition. We provide estimates for cross sections and beam-spin asymmetries in the first and second $πN$ resonance regions in the kinematics of forthcoming CLAS12 data from Jefferson Lab.

Hard exclusive reactions initiated by pion or photon beams within the near-backward kinematical regime specified by the small Mandelstam variable $-u$ can be studied to access pion-to-nucleon and photon-to-nucleon Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs). Checking the validity of collinear factorized description of pion and photon induced reactions in terms of TDAs allows to test the universality of TDAs between the space-like and time-like regimes that is the indispensable feature of the QCD collinear factorization approach. In this short review we consider the exclusive pion- and photo-production off nucleon of a highly virtual lepton pair (or heavy quarkonium) in the near-backward region. We first employ a simplistic cross channel nucleon exchange model of pion-to-nucleon TDAs to estimate the magnitude of the corresponding cross sections for the kinematical conditions of J-PARC. We then illustrate the flexibility of our approach by building a two parameter model for the photon-to-nucleon TDAs based on preliminary results for near threshold $J/ψ$ photoproduction at JLab and provide our estimates for near-backward $J/ψ$ photoproduction and Timelike Compton Scattering cross sections for the kinematical conditions of JLab and of future EIC and EicC.

We summarize recent progress in measuring and understanding high energy reactions with baryon charge exchange in the u-channel, as discussed in the first backward angle (u-channel) Physics Workshop. In particular, we discuss backward angle measurements and their theoretical description via both hadronic models and the collinear factorization approach, and discuss planned future measurements of u-channel physics. In this review, we discuss the general properties and physical interpretation of baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-photon TDAs. We argue that these non-perturbative objects are a convenient complementary tool to explore the structure of baryons at the partonic level. We present an overview of hard exclusive reactions admitting a description in terms of TDAs. The $A_{LU}^{\sinφ}$ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV$^{2}$ in $-t$, covering the kinematic regimes of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found $A_{LU}^{\sinφ}$ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90$^\circ$ in the center-of-mass. The unique results presented in this paper will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

Recent analyses of backward meson electroproduction support the validity of a collinear QCD factorization framework for these hard exclusive reactions. This opens a way to the extraction of nucleon-to-meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) from the experimental data. Similarly to the generalized parton distributions, TDAs - after the Fourier transform in the transverse plane - carry valuable information on the transverse location of hadron constituents. We address the properties of integrated nucleon-to-meson TDAs in the impact parameter representation. We argue that the emerging picture provides an intuitive interpretation for the hadron structural information contained in nucleon-to-meson TDAs and allows to study diquark-quark contents of fast moving hadrons in the transverse plane.

Backward-angle meson electroproduction above the resonance region, which was previously ignored, is anticipated to offer unique access to the three quark plus sea component of the nucleon wave function. In this letter, we present the first complete separation of the four electromagnetic structure functions above the resonance region in exclusive omega electroproduction off the proton, e + p -> e' + p + omega, at central Q^2 values of 1.60, 2.45 GeV^2 , at W = 2.21 GeV. The results of our pioneering -u ~ -u min study demonstrate the existence of a unanticipated backward-angle cross section peak and the feasibility of full L/T/LT/TT separations in this never explored kinematic territory. At Q^2 =2.45 GeV^2 , the observed dominance of sigma_T over sigma_L, is qualitatively consistent with the collinear QCD description in the near-backward regime, in which the scattering amplitude factorizes into a hard subprocess amplitude and baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs): universal non-perturbative objects only accessible through backward angle kinematics.

The method is applied to the ${\rm O}(N)$-symmetric EFT, which is a two-dimensional sibling of the four dimensional ${\rm O}(N+1)/{\rm O}(N)$ sigma-model. For the first time the exact all-order summation of the $\left(E^{2} \ln(1/E)\right)^n$ contributions (chiral logarithms) for the $2 \to 2$ scattering amplitudes is performed in closed analytical form. The cases when the resulting amplitudes turn to be meromorphic functions with an infinite number of poles (Landau poles) are identified. These recurrence relations follow from the fundamental requirements of unitarity, analyticity and crossing symmetry of scattering amplitudes and generalize the renormalization group technique for the case of non-renormalizable EFTs. We review the existing exact solutions of non-linear recurrence relations relevant for field theoretical applications. The orbital angular momentum operator expansion turns to be a powerful tool to construct the fully covariant partial wave amplitudes of hadron decay reactions and hadron photo- and electroproduction processes. In this paper we consider a useful development of the orbital angular momentum operator expansion method. We present the differential technique allowing the direct calculation of convolutions of two orbital angular momentum operators with an arbitrary number of open Lorentz indices. This differential technique greatly simplifies calculations when the reaction subject to the partial wave analysis involves high spin particles in the initial and/or final states. We also present a useful generalization of the orbital angular momentum operators.

Transverse momentum distributions and generalized parton distributions provide a comprehensive framework for the three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon and the nucleus experimentally using deeply virtual semi-exclusive and exclusive processes. The advent of combined high luminosity facilities and large acceptance detector capabilities enables experimental investigation of the partonic structure of hadrons with time-like virtual probes, in complement to the rich on-going space-like virtual probe program. The merits and benefits of the dilepton production channel for nuclear structure studies are discussed within the context of the International Workshop on Nucleon and Nuclear Structure through Dilepton Production taking place at the European Center for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT$^{\star}$) of Trento. Particularly, the double deeply virtual Compton scattering, the time-like Compton scattering, the deeply virtual meson production, and the Drell-Yan processes are reviewed and a strategy for high impact experimental measurements is proposed.

Showing out the equivalence of various GPD representations can help to get more insight into GPD properties and allow to build up flexible GPD models capable of satisfactory description of the whole set of available experimental data. We review the mathematical aspects of establishing equivalence between the the double partial wave expansion of GPDs in the conformal partial waves and in the $t$-channel ${\rm SO}(3)$ partial waves and the double distribution representation of GPDs.

S. Brodsky, F.J. Llanes-Estrada, and A. Szczepaniak formulated the $J=0$ fixed pole universality hypothesis for (deeply) virtual Compton scattering. We show that in the Bjorken limit this hypothesis is equivalent to the validity of the inverse moment sum rule for the $D$-term form factor. However, any supplementary $D$-term added to a generalized parton distribution (GPD) results in an additional $J=0$ fixed pole contribution that violates universality. Unfortunately, one can not provide any reliable theoretical argument excluding the existence of such supplementary $D$-term. Moreover, the violation of $J=0$ fixed pole universality was revealed in field theoretical GPD models. Therefore, $J=0$ fixed pole universality hypothesis remains just an external assumption and probably will never be proven theoretically.

S.~Brodsky, F.~J.~Llanes-Estrada, and A.~Szczepaniak emphasized the importance of the $J=0$ fixed pole manifestation in real and (deeply) virtual Compton scattering measurements and argued that the $J=0$ fixed pole is universal, {\it i.e.}, independent on the photon virtualities \cite{Brodsky:2008qu}. In this paper we review the $J=0$ fixed pole issue in deeply virtual Compton scattering. We employ the dispersive approach to derive the sum rule that connects the $J=0$ fixed pole contribution and the subtraction constant, called the $D$-term form factor for deeply virtual Compton scattering. We show that in the Bjorken limit the $J=0$ fixed pole universality hypothesis is equivalent to the conjecture that the $D$-term form factor is given by the inverse moment sum rule for the Compton form factor. This implies that the $D$-term is an inherent part of corresponding generalized parton distribution (GPD). Any supplementary $D$-term added to a GPD results in an additional $J=0$ fixed pole contribution and implies the violation of the universality hypothesis. We argue that there exists no theoretical proof for the $J=0$ fixed pole universality conjecture.

We consider backward vector meson exclusive electroproduction off nucleons in the framework of collinear QCD factorization. Nucleon to vector meson transition distribution amplitudes arise as building blocks for the corresponding factorized amplitudes. In the near-backward kinematics, the suggested factorization mechanism results in the dominance of the transverse cross section of vector meson production ($σ_T \gg σ_L$) and in the characteristic $1/Q^8$-scaling behavior of the cross section. We evaluate nucleon to vector meson TDAs in the cross-channel nucleon exchange model and present estimates of the differential cross section for backward $ρ^0$, $ω$ and $φ$ meson production off protons. The resulting cross sections are shown to be measurable in the forthcoming JLab@12 GeV experiments.

The dual parametrization and the Mellin-Barnes integral approach represent two frameworks for handling the double partial wave expansion of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in the conformal partial waves and in the $t$-channel ${\rm SO}(3)$ partial waves. Within the dual parametrization framework, GPDs are represented as integral convolutions of forward-like functions whose Mellin moments generate the conformal moments of GPDs. The Mellin-Barnes integral approach is based on the analytic continuation of the GPD conformal moments to the complex values of the conformal spin. GPDs are then represented as the Mellin-Barnes-type integrals in the complex conformal spin plane. In this paper we explicitly show the equivalence of these two independently developed GPD representations. Furthermore, we clarify the notions of the $J=0$ fixed pole and the $D$-form factor. We also provide some insight into GPD modeling and map the phenomenologically successful Kumerički-Müller GPD model to the dual parametrization framework by presenting the set of the corresponding forward-like functions. We also build up the reparametrization procedure allowing to recast the double distribution representation of GPDs in the Mellin-Barnes integral framework and present the explicit formula for mapping double distributions into the space of double partial wave amplitudes with complex conformal spin.

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

We construct the system of tree level bootstrap constraints for the renormalization prescriptions fixing the physical content of the theory. Then we perform the numerical testing of corresponding sum rules for the parameters of strange resonances. It is shown that, generally, the bootstrap constraints turn out consistent with presently known data on the strange resonance parameters. At the same time we point out few sum rules which cannot be saturated with modern data and discuss the possible reasons for such discrepancies.

These non-perturbative objects which encode the information on three quark correlations inside the nucleon may be accessed experimentally in backward meson electroproduction reactions. We suggest a general framework for modelling nucleon to pion (pi N) TDAs employing the spectral representation for pi N TDAs in terms of quadruple distributions. The factorized Ansatz for quadruple distributions with input from the soft-pion theorem for pi N TDAs is proposed. It is to be complemented with a D-term like contribution from the nucleon exchange in the cross channel.

Within our two component model for πN TDAs we update previous leading-twist estimates of the unpolarized cross section. Finally, we compute the transverse target single spin asymmetry as a function of skewness. Generalized Parton Distributions offer a new way to access the quark and gluon nucleon structure. We review recent progress in this domain, emphasizing the need to supplement the experimental study of DVCS by its crossed version, timelike Compton scattering (TCS), where data at high energy should appear thanks to the study of ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. This will open the access to very low skewness quark and gluon GPDs. Our leading order estimates show that the factorization scale dependence of the amplitudes is quite high. This fact demands the understanding of higher order contributions with the hope that they will stabilize this scale dependence. The magnitudes of the NLO coefficient functions are not small and neither is the difference of the coefficient functions appearing respectively in the DVCS and TCS amplitudes. The conclusion is that extracting the universal GPDs from both TCS and DVCS reactions requires much care. We also describe the extension of the GPD concept to three quark operators and the relevance of their nucleon to meson matrix elements, namely the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) which factorize in hard exclusive pion electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a pion and a lepton pair. We discuss the main properties of the TDAs.

Baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) extend the concept of generalized parton distributions. Baryon to meson TDAs appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description of amplitudes for a class of hard exclusive reactions, prominent examples of which being hard exclusive meson electroproduction off a nucleon in the backward region and baryon-antibaryon annihilation into a meson and a lepton pair. We study the general properties of these objects following from the underlying symmetries of QCD. In particular, the Lorentz symmetry results in the polynomiality property of the Mellin moments in longitudinal momentum fractions. We present a detailed account of the isotopic and permutation symmetry properties of nucleon to pion (πN) TDAs. This restricts the number of independent leading twist πN TDAs to eight functions, providing description of all isotopic channels. Using chiral symmetry and the crossing relation between πN TDAs and πN generalized distribution amplitudes we establish soft pion theorems for πN TDAs, which determine the magnitude of πN TDAs. Finally, we build a simple resonance exchange model for πN TDAs considering N and Δ(1232) exchange contributions into the isospin-1/2 and isospin-3/2 πN TDAs.

We generalize for these quantities the notion of double distributions introduced in the context of generalized parton distributions. We propose the generalization of A.Radyushkin's factorized Ansatz for the case of baryon to meson TDAs. Our construction opens the way to modeling of baryon to meson TDAs in their complete domain of definition and quantitative estimates of cross-sections for various hard exclusive reactions.

We establish a link between the dual parametrization of GPDs and a popular parametrization based on the double distribution Ansatz, which is in prevalent use in phenomenological applications. We compute several first forward-like functions that express the double distribution Ansatz for GPDs in the framework of the dual parametrization and show that these forward-like functions make the dominant contribution into the GPD quintessence function. We also argue that the forward-like functions $Q_{2 ν}(x)$ with $ν\ge 1$ contribute to the leading singular small-$x_{Bj}$ behavior of the imaginary part of DVCS amplitude. This makes the small-$x_{Bj}$ behavior of $\im A^{DVCS}$ independent of the asymptotic behavior of PDFs. Assuming analyticity of Mellin moments of GPDs in the Mellin space we are able to fix the value of the $D$-form factor in terms of the GPD quintessence function $N(x,t)$ and the forward-like function $Q_0(x,t)$.

This is the 6th paper in the series developing the formalism to manage the effective scattering theory of strong interactions. Relying on the theoretical scheme suggested in our previous publications we concentrate here on the practical aspect and apply our technique to the elastic pion-nucleon scattering amplitude. We test numerically the pion-nucleon spectrum sum rules that follow from the tree level bootstrap constraints. We show how these constraints can be used to estimate the tensor and vector $NNρ$ coupling constants. At last, we demonstrate that the tree-level low energy expansion coefficients computed in the framework of our approach show nice agreement with known experimental data. These results allow us to claim that the extended perturbation scheme is quite reasonable from the computational point of view.

This is the 5-th paper in the series devoted to explicit formulating of the rules needed to manage an effective field theory of strong interactions in S-matrix sector. We discuss the principles of constructing the meaningful perturbation series and formulate two basic ones: uniformity and summability. Relying on these principles one obtains the bootstrap conditions which restrict the allowed values of the physical (observable) parameters appearing in the extended perturbation scheme built for a given localizable effective theory. The renormalization prescriptions needed to fix the finite parts of counterterms in such a scheme can be divided into two subsets: minimal -- needed to fix the S-matrix, and non-minimal -- for eventual calculation of Green functions; in this paper we consider only the minimal one. In particular, it is shown that in theories with the amplitudes which asymptotic behavior is governed by known Regge intercepts, the system of independent renormalization conditions only contains those fixing the counterterm vertices with $n \leq 3$ lines, while other prescriptions are determined by self-consistency requirements. Moreover, the prescriptions for $n \leq 3$ cannot be taken arbitrary: an infinite number of bootstrap conditions should be respected. The concept of localizability, introduced and explained in this article, is closely connected with the notion of resonance in the framework of perturbative QFT. We discuss this point and, finally, compare the corner stones of our approach with the philosophy known as ``analytic S-matrix''.

In this talk we discuss the peculiar features of this procedure for the case of exactly solvable bootstrap model based on Veneziano string amplitude. This allows us to simulate different situations that may encounter in realistic EFT models. We also make a short review of the technique that may be useful for further analysis of various bootstrap systems.

We discuss the peculiar features of the renormalization procedure in the case of infinite-component effective theory. It is shown that in the case of physically interesting theories (namely, those leading to the amplitudes with asymptotic behavior governed by known Regge intercepts) the full system of required renormalization prescriptions only contains those needed to fix the minimal counterterm vertices with one, two, three and (in some cases) four lines. There is no necessity in imposing the prescriptions for n-leg counterterm vertices with (n > 4). Moreover, the prescriptions for n =< 4 cannot be taken arbitrary: an infinite system of bootstrap constraints must be taken into account. The general method allowing one to write down the explicit form of this system is explained and illustrated by the example of elastic scattering process.
