In the formalism of the non-supersymmetric modular invariance approach to the flavour problem the elements of the Yukawa coupling and fermion mass matrices are expressed in terms of polyharmonic Maaß modular forms of level $N$ in addition to the standard modula forms of the same level and a small number of constant parameters. Non-trivial polyharmonic Maaß forms exist for zero, negative and positive integer modular weights. Employing the finite modula group $S_4$ as a flavour symmetry group and assuming that the three left-handed lepton doublets furnish a triplet irreducible representation of $S_4$, we construct all possible 7- and 8-parameter lepton flavour models in which the neutrino masses are generated either by the Weinberg effective operator or by the type I seesaw mechanism. We identify the phenomenologically viable models and obtain predictions for each of these models for the neutrino mass ordering, the absolute neutrino mass scale, the Dirac and Majorana CP-violation phases and, correspondingly, for the sum of neutrino masses and the neutrinoless double beta decay effective Majorana mass. We comment on how these models can be tested and conclude that they are all falsifiable. Detailed analyses are presented in the case of three representative benchmark lepton flavour scenarios.

We investigate the implications of the constraints following from the precise knowledge of the total Earth mass, $M_\oplus$, and moment of inertia, $I_\oplus$, and from the requirement that Earth be in hydrostatic equilibrium (EHE), in the neutrino tomography studies of the Earth density structure. In order to estimate the sensitivity of a given neutrino detector to possible deviations of the inner core (IC), outer core (OC), core (IC + OC) and mantle Earth densities from those obtained using geophysical and seismological data and described by the preliminary reference Earth model (PREM), in the statistical analyses performed within the neutrino tomography studies one typically varies the density of each of these structures. These variations, however, must respect the $M_\oplus$, $I_\oplus$ and EHE constraints. Working with PREM average densities we derive the $M_\oplus$, $I_\oplus$ and EHE constraints on the possible density variations when one approximates the Earth density structure with i) three layers - mantle, outer core and inner core, and ii) four layers - upper mantle, lower mantle, outer core and inner core. We get drastically different results in the two cases.

Recently, it was shown that modular symmetry may solve the strong CP problem without axions, by producing a vanishing QCD angle while generating a large quark CP violation phase. We extend this framework to finite modular groups, systematically identifying the allowed mass textures. We find quark fields must furnish 1D representations and scan the minimal model landscape.

We present simple effective theory of quark masses, mixing and CP violation with level $N=3$ ($A_4$) modular symmetry, which provides solution to the strong CP problem without the need for an axion. The vanishing of the strong CP-violating phase $\bar θ$ is ensured by assuming CP to be a fundamental symmetry of the Lagrangian of the theory. The CP symmetry is broken spontaneously by the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the modulus $τ$. This provides the requisite large value of the CKM CP-violating phase while the strong CP phase $\bar θ$ remains zero or is tiny. Within the considered framework we discuss phenomenologically viable quark mass matrices with three types of texture zeros, which are realized by assigning both the left-handed and right-handed quark fields to $A_4$ singlets ${\bf 1}$, ${\bf 1'}$ and ${\bf 1''}$ with appropriate weights. The VEV of $τ$ is restricted to reproduce the observed CKM parameters. We discuss cases in which the modulus VEV is close to the fixed points $i$, $ω$ and $i\infty$. In particular, we focus on the VEV of $τ$, which gives the absolute minima of the supergravity-motivated modular- and CP-invariant potentials for the modulus $τ$, so called, modulus stabilisation. We present a successful model, which is consistent with the modulus stabilisation close to $τ=ω$.

We find that viable leptogenesis can be due solely to CP-violating values of $δ$ and that the $N_{1,\,2}$ total mixing squared $Θ^2=\sum_αΘ^2_α$ needed is within the reach of future experiments, $Θ_α$ parameterising the coupling to the charged lepton $α=e,\,μ,\,τ$. Furthermore, the required parameter space differs from that associated with additional Casas-Ibarra sources of CP-violation. Future determination of $δ$, $Θ^2$ and/or the ratios $Θ_τ^2:Θ^2_μ:Θ^2_e$ would provide a critical test of the considered scenario.

The quark mass hierarchies are considered in the vicinity of the fixed point $τ= i\infty$, $τ$ being the vacuum expectation value of the modulus. We consider first a model in which the up-type and down-type quark mass matrices $M_u$ and $M_d$ involve modular forms of level 3 and weights 6, 4 and 2 and each depends on four constant parameters. We also consider the case of $M_u$ and $M_d$ depending on the same $τ$ and involving modular forms of weights 8, 4, 2 and 6, 4, 2, respectively, with $M_u$ receiving a tiny SUSY breaking or higher dimensional operator contribution. Both the mass hierarchies of up-type and down-type quarks as well and the CKM mixing angles and CP violating phase are reproduced successfully with one complex parameter and all parameters being in magnitude of the same order. The relatively large value of ${\rm Im}\,τ$, needed for describing the down-type quark mass hierarchies, is crucial for obtaining the correct up-type quark mass hierarchies.

Particle physics today faces the challenge of explaining the mystery of dark matter, the origin of matter over anti-matter in the Universe, the origin of the neutrino masses, the apparent fine-tuning of the electro-weak scale, and many other aspects of fundamental physics. Perhaps the most striking frontier to emerge in the search for answers involves new physics at mass scales comparable to familiar matter, below the GeV-scale, or even radically below, down to sub-eV scales, and with very feeble interaction strength. New theoretical ideas to address dark matter and other fundamental questions predict such feebly interacting particles (FIPs) at these scales, and indeed, existing data provide numerous hints for such possibility. A vibrant experimental program to discover such physics is under way, guided by a systematic theoretical approach firmly grounded on the underlying principles of the Standard Model. This document represents the report of the FIPs 2022 workshop, held at CERN between the 17 and 21 October 2022 and aims to give an overview of these efforts, their motivations, and the decadal goals that animate the community involved in the search for FIPs.

We discuss a left-right (L-R) symmetric model with the double seesaw mechanism at the TeV scale generating Majorana masses for the active left-handed (LH) flavour neutrinos $ν_{αL}$ and the heavy right-handed (RH) neutrinos $N_{βR}$, $α,β= e,μ,τ$, which in turn mediate lepton number violating processes, including neutrinoless double beta decay. The Higgs sector is composed of two Higgs doublets $H_L$, $H_R$, and a bi-doublet $Φ$. The fermion sector has the usual for the L-R symmetric models quarks and leptons, along with three $SU(2)$ singlet fermion $S_{γL}$. The choice of bare Majorana mass term for these sterile fermions induces large Majorana masses for the heavy RH neutrinos leading to two sets of heavy Majorana particles $N_j$ and $S_k$, $j,k=1,2,3$, with masses $m_{N_j} \ll m_{S_k}$. Working with a specific version of the model in which the $ν_{αL} - N_{βR}$ and the $N_{βR} - S_{γL}$ Dirac mass terms are diagonal, and assuming that $m_{N_j} \sim (1 - 1000)$ GeV and ${\rm max}(m_{S_k}) \sim (1 - 10)$ TeV, $m_{N_j} \ll m_{S_k}$, we study in detail the new ``non-standard'' contributions to the $0νββ$ decay amplitude and half-life arising due to the exchange of virtual $N_j$ and $S_k$. We find that in both cases of NO and IO light neutrino mass spectra, these contributions are strongly enhanced and are dominant at relatively small values of the lightest neutrino mass $m_{1(3)} \sim (10^{-4} - 10^{-2})$ eV over the light Majorana neutrino exchange contribution. In large part of the parameter space, the predictions of the model for the $0νββ$ decay generalised effective Majorana mass and half-life are within the sensitivity range of the planned next generation of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments LEGEND-200 (LEGEND-1000), nEXO, KamlAND-Zen-II, CUPID, NEXT-HD.

We investigate the possibility to describe the quark mass hierarchies as well as the CKM quark mixing matrix without fine-tuning in a quark flavour model with modular $A_4$ symmetry. The quark mass hierarchies are considered in the vicinity of the fixed point $τ= ω\equiv \exp({i\,2π/3})$ (the left cusp of the fundamental domain of the modular group), $τ$ being the VEV of the modulus. The model involves modular forms of level 3 and weights 6, 4 and 2, and contains eight constants, only two of which, $g_u$ and $g_d$, can be a source of CP violation in addition to the VEV of the modulus, $τ= ω+ ε$, $(ε)^* \neq ε$, $|ε|\ll 1$. We find that in the case of real (CP-conserving) $g_u$ and $g_d$ and common $τ$ ($ε$) in the down-quark and up-quark sectors, the down-type quark mass hierarchies can be reproduced without fine tuning with $|ε| \cong 0.03$, all other constants being of ${\cal O}(1)$, and correspond approximately to $1 : |ε| : |ε|^2$. The up-type quark mass hierarchies can be achieved with the same $|ε| \cong 0.03$ but allowing $g_u\sim {\cal O}(10)$ and correspond to $1 : |ε|/|g_u| : |ε|^2/|g_u|^2$. In this setting, we discuss the CKM quark mixing and CP violation.

In recent work, it was shown that the Type II Seesaw mechanism alone can simultaneously explain the neutrino masses, Leptogenesis, and inflation. A key prediction of this model was the possibility of signals being produced in Lepton Flavour Violation decays. Searches at future experiments such as Mu3e and COMET will be integral to determining the properties of the associated triplet Higgs, and will complement other terrestrial experimental searches and cosmological measurements. Working within the Standard Model effective field theory approach, we examine the possibility to test charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) new physics (NP) by angular measurements of the outgoing electron and positrons in the polarised $μ^{+}\to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ decay. This decay is planned to be studied with a sensitivity to the branching ratio of $B_{μ\to3e}\sim 10^{-15}$ by the Mu3e experiment at PSI. To illustrate the potential of these measurements, we consider a set of eight effective operators generating the decay at the tree level, including dimension-five dipole operators and dimension-six scalar and vector four-fermion operators of different chiralities. We show that if the polarised $μ^{+}\to e^{+}e^{+}e^{-}$ decay is observed and is induced by a single operator, data from three angular observables - two P-odd asymmetries and one T-odd asymmetry - can allow to discriminate between all considered operators with the exception of scalar and vector operators of opposite chirality. For these two types of operators, the P-odd asymmetry is maximal in magnitude; they can be distinguished, in principle, by measuring the helicities of the outgoing positrons. The observation of a non-zero T-odd asymmetry would indicate the presence in the decay rate of a dipole and vector operator interference term that is T (CP) violating.

The analysis is performed by studying the effects of the Earth matter on the oscillations of atmospheric $ν_μ$, $ν_e$, $\barν_μ$ and $\barν_e$. We present results which, in particular, illustrate the dependence of the ORCA sensitivity to the OC, IC, core and mantle densities on the type of systematic uncertainties used in the analysis, on the value of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$, on whether the Earth mass constraint is implemented or not, and on the way it is implemented, and on the type - with normal ordering (NO) or inverted ordering (IO) - of the light neutrino mass spectrum. We show, in particular, that in the "most favorable" NO case of implemented Earth mass constraint, "minimal" systematic errors and $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.58$, ORCA can determine, e.g., the OC (mantle) density at $3σ$ C.L. after 10 years of operation with an uncertainty of (-18\%)/+15\% (of (-6\%)/+8\%). In the "most unfavourable" NO case of "conservative" systematic errors and $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.42$, the uncertainty reads (-43\%)/+39\% ((-17\%/+20\%), while for for $\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.50$ and 0.58 it is noticeably smaller: (-37)\%/+30\% and (-30\%)/+24\% ((-13\%)/+16\% and (-11\%/+14\%)). We find also that the sensitivity of ORCA to the outer core, core and mantle densities is significantly worse for IO neutrino mass spectrum.

Using the density matrix equations (DME) for high scale leptogenesis based on the type I seesaw mechanism, in which the CP violation (CPV) is provided by the low-energy Dirac or/and Majorana phases of the neutrino mixing (PMNS) matrix, we investigate the 1-to-2 and the 2-to-3 flavour regime transitions, where the 1, 2 and 3 leptogenesis flavour regimes in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe $η_B$ are described by the Boltzmann equations. Concentrating on the 1-to-2 flavour transition we determine the general conditions under which $η_B$ goes through zero and changes sign in the transition. Analysing in detail the behaviour of $η_B$ in the transition in the case of two heavy Majorana neutrinos $N_{1,2}$ with hierarchical masses, $M_1 \ll M_2$, we find, in particular, that i) the Boltzmann equations in many cases fail to describe correctly the generation of $η_B$ in the 1, 2 and 3 flavour regimes, ii) the 2-flavour regime can persist above (below) $\sim 10^{12}$ GeV ($\sim 10^9$ GeV), iii) the flavour effects in leptogenesis persist beyond the typically considered maximal for these effects leptogenesis scale of $10^{12}$ GeV. We further determine the minimal scale $M_{1\text{min}}$ at which we can have successful leptogenesis when the CPV is provided only by the Dirac or Majorana phases of the PMNS matrix as well as the ranges of scales and values of the phases for having successful leptogenesis. We show, in particular, that when the CPV is due to the Dirac phase $δ$, there is a direct relation between the sign of $\sin δ$ and the sign of $η_B$ in the regions of viable leptogenesis in the case of normal hierarchical light neutrino mass spectrum; for the inverted hierarchical spectrum the same result holds for $M_1 \lesssim 10^{13}$ GeV. The considered scenarios of leptogenesis are testable and falsifiable in low-energy neutrino experiments.

In modular-invariant models of flavour, hierarchical fermion mass matrices may arise solely due to the proximity of the modulus $τ$ to a point of residual symmetry. This mechanism does not require flavon fields, and modular weights are not analogous to Froggatt-Nielsen charges. Instead, we show that hierarchies depend on the decomposition of field representations under the residual symmetry group. We systematically go through the possible fermion field representation choices which may yield hierarchical structures in the vicinity of symmetric points, for the four smallest finite modular groups, isomorphic to $S_3$, $A_4$, $S_4$, and $A_5$, as well as for their double covers. We find a restricted set of pairs of representations for which the discussed mechanism may produce viable fermion (charged-lepton and quark) mass hierarchies. We present two lepton flavour models in which the charged-lepton mass hierarchies are naturally obtained, while lepton mixing is somewhat fine-tuned. After formulating the conditions for obtaining a viable lepton mixing matrix in the symmetric limit, we construct a model in which both the charged-lepton and neutrino sectors are free from fine-tuning.

The case when the CP violating asymmetries in the individual lepton charges $L_l$, $l=e,μ,τ$, and in the total lepton charge $L$ of the Universe are generated in $1 \leftrightarrow 2$ decay processes is investigated. We show that successful leptogenesis is possible for $M_{1,2}$ lying in the interval $M_{1,2} = (0.3 - 100)$ GeV. Our results show also, in particular, that for vanishing initial $N_{1,2}$ abundance, flavour effects can play an important role in the generation of the baryon asymmetry, leading to an enhancement of the asymmetry by a factor up to $\sim 300$ with respect to the "unflavoured" leptogenesis scenario.

We develop the formalism of the finite modular group $Γ'_4 \equiv S'_4$, a double cover of the modular permutation group $Γ_4 \simeq S_4$, for theories of flavour. The integer weight $k>0$ of the level 4 modular forms indispensable for the formalism can be even or odd. We explicitly construct the lowest-weight ($k=1$) modular forms in terms of two Jacobi theta constants, denoted as $\varepsilon(τ)$ and $θ(τ)$, $τ$ being the modulus. We show that these forms furnish a 3D representation of $S'_4$ not present for $S_4$. Having derived the $S'_4$ multiplication rules and Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, we construct multiplets of modular forms of weights up to $k=10$. These are expressed as polynomials in $\varepsilon$ and $θ$, bypassing the need to search for non-linear constraints. We further show that within $S'_4$ there are two options to define the (generalised) CP transformation and we discuss the possible residual symmetries in theories based on modular and CP invariance. Finally, we provide two examples of application of our results, constructing phenomenologically viable lepton flavour models.

We examine the compatibility between the Neutrino Option, in which the electroweak scale is generated by PeV mass type I seesaw Majorana neutrinos, and leptogenesis. We find the Neutrino Option is consistent with resonant leptogenesis. Working within the minimal seesaw scenario with two heavy Majorana neutrinos $N_{1,2}$, which form a pseudo-Dirac pair, we explore the viable parameter space. We find that the Neutrino Option and successful leptogenesis are compatible in the cases of a neutrino mass spectrum with normal (inverted) ordering for $1.2 \times 10^6 < M \text{ (GeV)} < 8.8 \times 10^6$ ($2.4 \times 10^6 < M \text{ (GeV)} < 7.4 \times 10^6$), with $M = (M_1 + M_2)/2$ and $M_{1,2}$ the masses of $N_{1,2}$. Successful leptogenesis requires that $ΔM/M \equiv (M_2 - M_1)/M \sim 10^{-8}$. We further show that leptogenesis can produce the baryon asymmetry of the Universe within the Neutrino Option scenario when the requisite CP violation in leptogenesis is provided exclusively by the Dirac or Majorana low energy CP violation phases of the PMNS matrix.

The formalism of combined finite modular and generalised CP (gCP) symmetries for theories of flavour is developed. The corresponding consistency conditions for the two symmetry transformations acting on the modulus $τ$ and on the matter fields are derived. The implications of gCP symmetry in theories of flavour based on modular invariance described by finite modular groups are illustrated with the example of a modular $S_4$ model of lepton flavour. Due to the addition of the gCP symmetry, viable modular models turn out to be more constrained, with the modulus $τ$ being the only source of CP violation.

We investigate models of charged lepton and neutrino masses and lepton mixing based on broken modular symmetry. The matter fields in these models are assumed to transform in irreducible representations of the finite modular group $Γ_4 \simeq S_4$. We analyse the minimal scenario in which the only source of symmetry breaking is the vacuum expectation value of the modulus field. In this scenario there is no need to introduce flavon fields. Using the basis for the lowest weight modular forms found earlier, we build minimal phenomenologically viable models in which the neutrino masses are generated via the type I seesaw mechanism. While successfully accommodating charged lepton masses, neutrino mixing angles and mass-squared differences, these models predict the values of the lightest neutrino mass (i.e., the absolute neutrino mass scale), of the Dirac and Majorana CP violation (CPV) phases, as well as specific correlations between the values of the atmospheric neutrino mixing parameter $\sin^2θ_{23}$ and i) the Dirac CPV phase $δ$, ii) the sum of the neutrino masses, and iii) the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta decay. We revisit the possibility of producing the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via thermal leptogenesis, where $CP$ violation comes exclusively from the low-energy phases of the neutrino mixing matrix. We demonstrate the viability of thermal flavoured leptogenesis across seven orders of magnitude $\left(10^{6}<T \text{ (GeV)}< 10^{13}\right)$, using modern numerical machinery, where the lower bound can be reached only if flavour effects are taken into account and its value depends on the allowed degree of cancellation between the tree-level and radiative contributions to the light neutrino masses. At very high scales $\left( T \gg 10^{12} \text{ GeV} \right)$, we clarify that thermal leptogenesis is sensitive to the low-energy phases, in contradiction with what is usually claimed in the literature. In particular we demonstrate that Majorana-phase leptogenesis is in general viable while Dirac-phase leptogenesis requires some level of fine-tuning.

We find the (approximate) equalities $θ^m_{23} = θ_{23}$ and $δ^m = δ$, $θ_{23}$ ($θ^m_{23}$) and $δ$ ($δ^m$) being respectively the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle and the Dirac CP violation phase in vacuum (in matter) of the neutrino mixing matrix, which are shown to represent excellent approximations for the conditions of the T2K (T2HK), T2HKK, NO$ν$A and DUNE neutrino oscillation experiments. A new derivation of the known relation $\sin2θ^m_{23} \sinδ^m = \sin2θ_{23} \sinδ$ is presented and it is used to obtain a correlation between the shifts of $θ_{23}$ and $δ$ due to the matter effect. A derivation of the relation between the rephasing invariants which determine the magnitude of CP and T violating effects in 3-flavour neutrino oscillations in vacuum, $J_{\rm CP}$, and of the T violating effects in matter with constant density, $J^{m}_{\rm T} \equiv J^{m}$, reported in \cite{Krastev:1988yu} without a proof, is presented. It is shown that the function $F$ which appears in this relation, $J^{m} = J_{\rm CP}\,F$, and whose explicit form was given in \cite{Krastev:1988yu}, coincides with the function $\tilde{F}$ in the similar relation $J^{m} = J_{\rm CP}\tilde{F}$ derived in \cite{Naumov:1991ju}, although $F$ and $\tilde{F}$ are expressed in terms of different sets of neutrino mass and mixing parameters and have completely different forms.

The observation of neutrinoless double beta decay would allow to establish lepton number violation and the Majorana nature of neutrinos. The rate of this process in the case of 3-neutrino mixing is controlled by the neutrinoless double beta decay effective Majorana mass $|\langle m \rangle|$. For a neutrino mass spectrum with normal ordering, which is favoured over the spectrum with inverted ordering by recent global fits, $|\langle m \rangle|$ can be significantly suppressed. Taking into account updated data on the neutrino oscillation parameters, we investigate the conditions under which $|\langle m \rangle|$ in the case of spectrum with normal ordering exceeds $10^{-3}~(5\times 10^{-3})$ eV: $|\langle m \rangle|_\text{NO} > 10^{-3}~(5\times 10^{-3})$ eV. We analyse first the generic case with unconstrained leptonic CP violation Majorana phases. We show, in particular, that if the sum of neutrino masses is found to satisfy $Σ> 0.10$ eV, then $|\langle m \rangle|_\text{NO} > 5\times 10^{-3}$ eV for any values of the Majorana phases. We consider also cases where the values for these phases are either CP conserving or are in line with predictive schemes combining flavour and generalised CP symmetries.

In this article, we focus on non-resonant thermal leptogenesis and the possibility of lowering its scale. In order to do so, we calculate the lepton asymmetry produced from the decays of one and two heavy Majorana neutrinos using three-flavoured density matrix equations in an exhaustive exploration of the model parameter space. We find regions of the parameter space where thermal leptogenesis is viable at intermediate scales, $T\sim 10^{6}$ GeV. However, the viability of thermal leptogenesis at such scales requires a certain degree of cancellation between the tree and one-loop level contribution to the light neutrino mass matrix and we quantify such fine-tuning.

We assess the viability of these predictions by performing a statistical analysis which uses as an input the latest global data on the neutrino mixing parameters. We find 14 phenomenologically viable cases providing distinct predictions for some of the mixing angles and/or the Dirac phase $δ$. Employing the current best fit values of the three neutrino mixing angles, we perform a statistical analysis of these cases taking into account the prospective uncertainties in the determination of the mixing angles, planned to be achieved in currently running (Daya Bay) and the next generation (JUNO, T2HK, DUNE) of neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that only six cases would be compatible with these prospective data. We show that this number is likely to be further reduced by a precision measurement of $δ$.

We consider a version of the low-scale type I seesaw mechanism for generating small neutrino masses, as an alternative to the standard seesaw scenario. It involves two right-handed (RH) neutrinos $ν_{1R}$ and $ν_{2R}$ having a Majorana mass term with mass $M$, which conserves the lepton charge $L$. The RH neutrino $ν_{2R}$ has lepton-charge conserving Yukawa couplings $g_{\ell 2}$ to the lepton and Higgs doublet fields, while small lepton-charge breaking effects are assumed to induce tiny lepton-charge violating Yukawa couplings $g_{\ell 1}$ for $ν_{1R}$, $l=e,μ,τ$. In this approach the smallness of neutrino masses is related to the smallness of the Yukawa coupling of $ν_{1R}$ and not to the large value of $M$: the RH neutrinos can have masses in the few GeV to a few TeV range. The Yukawa couplings $|g_{\ell 2}|$ can be much larger than $|g_{\ell 1}|$, of the order $|g_{\ell 2}| \sim 10^{-4} - 10^{-2}$, leading to interesting low-energy phenomenology. We consider a specific realisation of this scenario within the Froggatt-Nielsen approach to fermion masses. In this model the Dirac CP violation phase $δ$ is predicted to have approximately one of the values $δ\simeq π/4,\, 3π/4$, or $5π/4,\, 7π/4$, or to lie in a narrow interval around one of these values. The low-energy phenomenology of the considered low-scale seesaw scenario of neutrino mass generation is also briefly discussed.

The claim that the present anomalies in the semi-leptonic $B$-meson decays can be explained within the MLFV context is critically re-examined concluding that such an explanation is not compatible with the present bounds from purely leptonic processes.

We consider a class of models of neutrino mixing with $S_4$ lepton flavour symmetry combined with a generalised CP symmetry, which are broken to residual $Z_2$ and $Z_2 \times H^ν_{\rm CP}$ symmetries in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors, respectively, $H^ν_{\rm CP}$ being a remnant CP symmetry of the neutrino Majorana mass term. In this set-up the neutrino mixing angles and CP violation (CPV) phases of the neutrino mixing matrix depend on three real parameters - two angles and a phase. We classify all phenomenologically viable mixing patterns and derive predictions for the Dirac and Majorana CPV phases. Further, we use the results obtained on the neutrino mixing angles and leptonic CPV phases to derive predictions for the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta decay.

In this approach the neutrino mixing matrix $U$ is assumed to have an underlying approximate symmetry form $\tilde{U}_ν$, which is dictated by, or associated with, the employed (discrete) symmetry. In such a setup the cosine of the Dirac CP-violating phase $δ$ can be related to the three neutrino mixing angles in terms of a sum rule which depends on the symmetry form of $\tilde{U}_ν$. We consider five extensively discussed possible symmetry forms of $\tilde{U}_ν$: i) bimaximal (BM) and ii) tri-bimaximal (TBM) forms, the forms corresponding to iii) golden ratio type A (GRA) mixing, iv) golden ratio type B (GRB) mixing, and v) hexagonal (HG) mixing. For each of these forms we investigate the renormalisation group corrections to the sum rule predictions for $δ$ in the cases of neutrino Majorana mass term generated by the Weinberg (dimension 5) operator added to i) the Standard Model, and ii) the minimal SUSY extension of the Standard Model.

We focus on forms of $U_e$ and $U_ν$ permitting to express $α_{21}/2$ and $α_{31}/2$ in terms of the Dirac phase $δ$ and the three neutrino mixing angles of the standard parametrisation of $U$, and the angles and the two Majorana-like phases $ξ_{21}/2$ and $ξ_{31}/2$ present, in general, in $U_ν$. The concrete forms of $U_ν$ considered are fixed by, or associated with, symmetries (tri-bimaximal, bimaximal, etc.), so that the angles in $U_ν$ are fixed. For each of these forms and forms of $U_e$ that allow to reproduce the measured values of the three neutrino mixing angles $θ_{12}$, $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, we derive predictions for phase differences $(α_{21}/2 - ξ_{21}/2)$, $(α_{31}/2 - ξ_{31}/2)$, etc., which are completely determined by the values of the mixing angles. We show that the requirement of generalised CP invariance of the neutrino Majorana mass term implies $ξ_{21} = 0$ or $π$ and $ξ_{31} = 0$ or $π$. For these values of $ξ_{21}$ and $ξ_{31}$ and the best fit values of $θ_{12}$, $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, we present predictions for the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta decay for both neutrino mass spectra with normal and inverted ordering.

The residual symmetries considered are: i) $G_e = Z_2$ and $G_ν = Z_n$, $n > 2$ or $Z_n \times Z_m$, $n,m \geq 2$; ii) $G_e = Z_n$, $n > 2$ or $Z_n \times Z_m$, $n,m \geq 2$ and $G_ν = Z_2$; iii) $G_e = Z_2$ and $G_ν = Z_2$; iv) $G_e$ is fully broken and $G_ν = Z_n$, $n > 2$ or $Z_n \times Z_m$, $n,m \geq 2$; and v) $G_e = Z_n$, $n > 2$ or $Z_n \times Z_m$, $n,m \geq 2$ and $G_ν$ is fully broken. For given $G_e$ and $G_ν$, the sum rules for $\cosδ$ thus derived are exact, within the approach employed, and are valid, in particular, for any $G_f$ containing $G_e$ and $G_ν$ as subgroups. We identify the cases when the value of $\cosδ$ cannot be determined, or cannot be uniquely determined, without making additional assumptions on unconstrained parameters. In a large class of cases considered the value of $\cosδ$ can be unambiguously predicted once the flavour symmetry $G_f$ is fixed. We present predictions for $\cosδ$ in these cases for the flavour symmetry groups $G_f = S_4$, $A_4$, $T^\prime$ and $A_5$, requiring that the measured values of the 3-neutrino mixing parameters $\sin^2θ_{12}$, $\sin^2θ_{13}$ and $\sin^2θ_{23}$, taking into account their respective $3σ$ uncertainties, are successfully reproduced.

The model employs, in particular, the seesaw mechanism of neutrino mass generation. We find that the results on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, obtained earlier in arXiv:1502.00110 [hep-ph] using approximate analytic expressions for the relevant CP violating asymmetry and efficiency factors, are correct, as was expected, up to 20-30 %. The phenomenological predictions for the low energy neutrino observables, derived using values of the parameters of the model for which we reproduce the observed value of the baryon asymmetry, change little with respect to those presented in arXiv:1502.00110 [hep-ph]. Among the many predictions of the model we find, for instance, that the neutrinoless double beta decay effective Majorana mass m_ee lies between 3.3 meV and 14.3 meV.

We perform a detailed analysis of the one-loop corrections to the light neutrino mass matrix within low scale type I seesaw extensions of the Standard Model and their implications in experimental searches for neutrinoless double beta decay. We show that a sizable contribution to the effective Majorana neutrino mass from the exchange of heavy Majorana neutrinos is always possible, provided one requires a fine-tuned cancellation between the tree-level and one-loop contribution to the light neutrino masses. We quantify the level of fine-tuning as a function of the seesaw parameters and introduce a generalisation of the Casas-Ibarra parametrization of the neutrino Yukawa matrix, which easily allows to include the one-loop corrections to the light neutrino masses.

We consider forms of $U_e$ and $U_ν$ allowing us to express $δ$ as a function of three neutrino mixing angles, present in $U$, and the angles contained in $U_ν$. We consider several forms of $U_ν$ determined by, or associated with, symmetries, tri-bimaximal, bimaximal, etc., for which the angles in $U_ν$ are fixed. For each of these forms and forms of $U_e$ allowing one to reproduce the measured values of the neutrino mixing angles, we construct the likelihood function for $\cos δ$, using i) the latest results of the global fit analysis of neutrino oscillation data, and ii) the prospective sensitivities on the neutrino mixing angles. Our results, in particular, confirm the conclusion, reached in earlier similar studies, that the measurement of the Dirac phase in the neutrino mixing matrix, together with an improvement of the precision on the mixing angles, can provide unique information as regards the possible existence of symmetry in the lepton sector.

In this paper we discuss a minor modification of a previous SU(5) x A5 flavour model which exhibits at leading order golden ratio mixing and sum rules for the heavy and the light neutrino masses. Although this model could predict all mixing angles well it fails in generating a sufficient large baryon asymmetry via the leptogenesis mechanism. We repair this deficit here, discuss model building aspects and give analytical estimates for the generated baryon asymmetry before we perform a numerical parameter scan. Our setup has only a few parameters in the lepton sector. This leads to specific constraints and correlations between the neutrino observables. For instance, we find that in the model considered only the neutrino mass spectrum with normal mass ordering and values of the lightest neutrino mass in the interval 10-18 meV are compatible with the current data on the neutrino oscillation parameters. With the introduction of only one NLO operator, the model can accommodate successfully simultaneously even at 1$σ$ level the current data on neutrino masses, on neutrino mixing and the observed value of the baryon asymmetry.

The process of Radiative Emission of Neutrino Pair (RENP) in atoms is sensitive to the absolute neutrino mass scale, the type of spectrum neutrino masses obey and the nature - Dirac or Majorana - of massive neutrinos. We analyse the possibility to test the hypothesis of existence of neutrinos with masses at the eV scale coupled to the electron in the weak charged lepton current in an RENP experiment. The presence of eV scale neutrinos in the neutrino mixing is associated with the existence of sterile neutrinos which mix with the active flavour neutrinos. At present there are a number of hints for active-sterile neutrino oscillations driven by $Δm^2 \sim 1~{\rm eV^2}$. We perform a detailed analysis of the RENP phenomenology within the "3 + 1" scheme with one sterile neutrino.
