For such goals in the physics frontiers we discuss a plan of building a super $η$ factory at HIAF high-energy terminal or at CiADS after upgrade. The high-intensity proton beam at HIAF provides a great opportunity of producing a huge number of $η$ samples of more than $10^{13}$ events per year, with multiple layers of thin targets of light nucleus. The physics goals, the first-version conceptual design of the spectrometer, and the preliminary simulation results are present.

In this work we try to search for signals generated by ultra-heavy dark matter at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) data. We look for possible gamma-ray by dark matter annihilation or decay from 16 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the field of view of LHAASO. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect detection of dark matter which have low fluxes of astrophysical $γ$-ray background while large amount of dark matter. By analyzing more than 700 days observational data at LHAASO, no significant dark matter signal from 1 TeV to 1 EeV is detected. Accordingly we derive the most stringent constraints on the ultra-heavy dark matter annihilation cross-section up to EeV. The constraints on the lifetime of dark matter in decay mode are also derived.

The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\barν_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $τ/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $τ/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$.

We investigate tests of the parity P and the combined parity and charge-conjugate CP symmetries from differential angular distributions of $J/ψ$ decaying into the lowest-lying baryon pairs at BESIII and the next-generation super tau-charm facilities (STCFs). Large corrections from $Z$ and $W$ exchange induced parity violating effects are found for $J/ψ$ decays with large logarithms resummed up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$. The parity-violating asymmetries on the production and the decay sides of $J/ψ$ are both found to be of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$, thus barely observable with the 10 billion $J/ψ$ events currently collected at BESIII. Nevertheless, these asymmetries utilizing the current BESIII data already permit a determination of the weak mixing angle with an absolute uncertainty $δs_w^2\approx0.08$, corresponding to the first determination of $s_w^2$ at the $J/ψ$ threshold. While limited by statistics currently, STCFs are estimated to improve this precision by a factor of $\sim\,20$ to $δs_w^2\approx0.004$ within one year based on luminosity rescaling. We also obtain the 95% confidence level upper bounds on the electric dipole moments of the octet baryons, which are of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-18})\,e{\rm\,cm}$ for BESIII and $\mathcal{O}(10^{-19})\,e{\rm\,cm}$ for STCFs. These bounds are improved by two to three orders of magnitude in comparison with the only existing one on $Λ$ from Fermilab. The method discussed in this work also paves a way for a first and direct measurement of the $Ξ$ and $Σ$ electric dipole moments.

We present our study of CP violation in two-body weak decays of antitriplet charmed baryons. In the standard model, the $Δc =1$ quark level interactions inducing CP violation for the relevant decays can be grouped into two types, one proportional to the CKM matrix elements $λ_d= V_{ud}V^*_{cd}$ and another $λ_b = V_{us}V^*_{cs}$. Recent studies have shown that with $SU(3)_F$ flavor symmetry, the decay amplitudes, including their strong phases, can be determined by data if contributions from $λ_b$ are neglected. However, the $λ_b$ terms must be retained to create interferences that induce CP violation. Some of them can be recovered in the framework of $SU(3)_F$ flavor symmetry, and the CP-violating rate asymmetry $A_{CP}$ is predicted to be of the order of ${\cal O}(10^{-4})$. We find that final state re-scattering effects, which link hadronic matrix elements proportional to $λ_d$ and $λ_b$, can help recover the missing terms. The re-scattering effects can enhance CP violation by an order of magnitude, with $A_{CP} (Ξ_c^0 \to p K^-) - A_{CP} (Ξ_c^0 \to Σ^+ π^-)$ being as large as $1.87 \times 10^{-3}$. This makes it promising to observe CP violation for the first time in baryon decays.

Recently Belle II reported the first measurement of $B^+\to K^++{\rm invisible (inv)}$, which is $2.7σ$ above the standard model (SM) prediction. If confirmed, this calls for new physics beyond SM. In the SM, the invisible particles are neutrino-anti-neutrino pairs. There are more possibilities when going beyond the SM. In this work, we focus on decays to dark matter (DM) and show that the $B\to K +\mathrm{inv}$ excess from Belle II and DM relic density can be simultaneously explained in a simple extension of the SM. The model introduces a real scalar singlet $φ$ acting as a DM candidate, and two heavy vector-like quarks $Q,D$ with the same quantum numbers as the SM left-handed quark doublet and right-handed down-type quark singlet, respectively. All these new particles are odd under a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry while the SM particles are even. The model can successfully explain the Belle II anomaly and DM relic density for TeV-scale heavy quarks with hierarchical Yukawa couplings involving $b$ and $s$ quarks. At the same time, it can easily satisfy other flavour physics constraints. Direct detection searches utilizing the Migdal effect constrain some of the parameter space.

Combination of recent measurements for $h \to Z γ$ from ALTLAS and CMS shows an excess that the ratio of the observed and standard model (SM) predicted branching ratios $μ= (σ\cdot{\cal B})_{\mathrm{obs}}/(σ\cdot{\cal B})_{\mathrm{SM}}$ is $2.2\pm 0.7$. If confirmed, it is a signal of new physics (NP) beyond SM. We study NP explanation for this excess. In general, for a given model it also affects the process $h \to γγ$. Since measured branching ratio for this process agrees with SM prediction well, the model is constrained severely. We find that a minimally fermion singlets and doublet extended NP model can explain simultaneously the current data for $h \to Z γ$ and $h\to γγ$. There are two solutions. One is the SM amplitude $c_Z^{\text{SM}}$ is enhanced by $δc_Z$ for $h \to Z γ$ to the observed value, but the $h \to γγ$ amplitude $c_γ^{\text{SM}} +δc_γ$ is decreased to $-c_γ^{\text{SM}}$ to give the observed branching ratio. This seems to be a contrived solution that although cannot be ruled out simply using branching ratio measurements. We, however, find another solution which naturally enhances the $h \to Z γ$ to the measured value, but keeps the $h \to γγ$ close to its SM prediction. We also comment on some phenomenology of these new fermions.

The BESIII collaboration has recently reported the first time measurement of the decay asymmetry $α(Λ_c^+ \to Ξ^0 K^+) = 0.01 \pm 0.16(stat.) \pm 0.03(syst.)$ and also a sizable phase shift of $δ_P-δ_S = -1.55 \pm 0.25$ or $1.59\pm 0.25$ between S- and P-wave amplitudes. This implies significant strong phase shifts in the decay amplitudes. The strong phases indicate the existence of rescattering or loop effects, which are challenging to calculate due to non-perturbative effects. By employing the flavor $SU(3)_F$ symmetry and applying the Körner-Pati-Woo theorem to reduce the number of parameters, we find that the current data already allow us to obtain, for the first time, model-independent decay amplitudes and their strong phases. The establishment of the existence of sizable strong phases opens a window for future investigations into CP violation. In our fit, a notable discrepancy emerges in the branching ratio of $Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+$. The direct relationship between $Γ(Λ_c^+ \to Λe^+ν_e)$ and $Γ(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- e^+ν_e)$, along with newly discovered $SU(3)_F$ relations, collectively suggests an underestimation of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^0 \to Ξ^- π^+)$ in experimental findings.

Belle II has recently reported the new measurement ${\cal B}(B^+\to K^+ν\barν)=(2.3\pm0.7)\times 10^{-5}$ \cite{Belle-II:2023esi} which is two times larger than their previous result (although consistent within errors) and about $2.7\,σ$ higher than the SM prediction. We re-examine new physics scenarios we have discussed previously which can enhance this rate to determine if they can accommodate the higher value reported in the new measurement. We use consistency with existing bounds on $B\to K^*ν\barν$, $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$, $B\to D^{(*)}\ell\barν$ and $B_s$ mixing to limit possible explanations for the excess. For the case of LFV neutrino couplings, we find that only two leptoquarks remain viable requiring a large $C_{9^\prime}^{ττ}=-C_{10^\prime}^{ττ}$. For models with different types of light dark matter particle pairs (scalar, fermion, or vector), the preliminary $q^2$ distribution from Belle II, which shows that the excess appears mostly for bins with $3\leq q^2\leq7$ GeV$^2$ \cite{Belle-II:2023esi}, implies only the vector current operators with scalar or vector dark matter particles with masses in the hundreds of MeV can match the anomaly.

Due to finite masses and mixing, for neutrinos propagation in space-time, there is a chiral oscillation between left- and right- chiral neutrinos, besides the usual oscillation between different generations. The probability of chiral oscillation is suppressed by a factor of $m^2/E^2$ making the effect small for relativistic neutrinos. However, for non-relativistic neutrinos, this effect can be significant. In matter, the equation of motion is modified. When neutrinos produced in weak interaction pass through the matter, the eigen-energies are split into two different ones depending on the helicity of the neutrino. This results in different oscillation behavior for neutrinos with different helicity, in particular there is a new resonant effect related to the helicity state of neutrino different than the usual MSW effect. For Majorana neutrinos, chiral oscillation also depends on Majorana phases.

It has been shown that if the $Z'$ has a maximal off-diagonal mixing, $(\bar μγ^μτ+ \bar τγ^μμ) Z'_μ$, a large mass for $Z'$ is possible. This class of models has a very interesting signature for detection, such as $μ^-μ^+ \to τ^- τ^+$ pair, $μ^- μ^+ \to μ^\pmμ^\pm τ^\mp τ^\mp$ at a muon collider. In this work we study in detail these processes. We find that the in the parameter space solving the muon g-2 anomaly, t-channel $τ^- τ^+$ pair production can easily be distinguished at more than 5$σ$ level from the s-channel production as that predicted in the standard model. The smoking gun signature of doubly same sign $μ^\pm μ^\pm + τ^\mpτ^\mp$ pairs production can have a 5$σ$ sensitivity, at a muon collider of 3 TeV with $\mathcal{O}$($fb^{-1}$) luminosity.

Recently, the NANOGrav, PPTA, EPTA, and CPTA collaborations independently reported their evidence of the Stochastic Gravitational Waves Background (SGWB). While the inferred gravitational-wave background amplitude and spectrum are consistent with astrophysical expectations for a signal from the population of supermassive black-hole binaries (SMBHBs), the search for new physics remains plausible in this observational window. In this work, we explore the possibility of explaining such a signal by the scalar-induced gravitational waves (IGWs) in the very early universe. We use a parameterized broken power-law function as a general description of the energy spectrum of the SGWB and fit it to the new results of NANOGrav, PPTA and EPTA. We find that this approach can put constraints on the parameters of IGW energy spectrum and further yield restrictions on various inflation models that may produce primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early universe, which is also expected to be examined by the forthcoming space-based GW experiments.

The SU(3) flavor symmetry has been applied to study these decays to obtain insights about weak interactions for charm physics. However not all such decays needed to determine the SU(3) irreducible amplitudes have been measured forbidding a complete global analysis. Previously, it has been shown that data from measured decays can be used to do a global fit to determine all except one parity violating and one parity conserving amplitudes of the relevant SU(3) irreducible amplitudes causing 8 hadronic two body weak decay channels involving $Ξ^0_c$ to $η$ or $η'$ transitions undetermined. It is important to obtain information about these decays in order to guide experimental searches. In this work using newly measured decay modes by BESIII and Belle in 2022, we carry out a global analysis and parameterize the unknown amplitudes to provide the ranges for the branching ratios of the 8 undetermined decays. Our results indicate that the SU(3) flavor symmetry can explain the measured data exceptionally well, with a remarkable minimal $χ^2/d.o.f.$ of 1.21 and predict 80 observables in 45 decays for future experimental data to test. We then vary the unknown SU(3) amplitudes to obtain the allowed range of branching ratios for the 8 undetermined decays. We find that some of them are within reach of near future experimental capabilities. We urge our experimental colleagues to carry out related searches.

This leaves ample opportunity to look for indications of new physics in these processes. At the same time, most, but not all, $ΔS=2$ interactions beyond the standard model are severely constrained by kaon-mixing data. We present two scenarios where new physics satisfying the kaon-mixing constraints can enhance the hyperon decay rates to levels that can be probed in future quests by BESIII and LHCb and at the proposed Super Tau-Charm Factory. Both scenarios require significant fine-tuning.

In the past decade, a unique and substantial suite of data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleon scale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks and gluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023 nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progress in hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well as highlight the realization of previous recommendations, and present opportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments and investments made in theoretical developments and the construction of new detectors. Furthermore, this document provides additional context to support the recommendations voted on at the Joint Hot and Cold QCD Town Hall Meeting, which are reported in a separate document.

The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

The simple standard model extensions featured have doubly-charged scalars as the mediators of the above decay processes. The phenomenology of these extensions is studied here in detail.

We propose to test $P$- and $CP$-symmetries with the process $e^+e^- \to J/ψ\to Λ\bar Λ$. The general form of the angular distribution of the process is derived and several observables for the proposed test are introduced. With these observables one can distinguish the effects of $P$-violations in the production of $J/ψ$ from its decay into a pair of $Λ\bar Λ$. Numerical estimations for proposed asymmetries of $P$-violation due to $Z$ exchange in SM are given. Our results show that BESIII has reached the sensitivity to probe these effects. At the proposed super-tau-charm factory with much enhanced luminosity it will be able to test the SM predictions with high precision. $CP$ violating effect in $J/ψ\to Λ\bar Λ$ can also be tested. In particular, BESIII data already reached the sensitivity to prove $CP$ violating effect due to current upper limit of electric dipole moment of $Λ$. At the proposed super-tau-charm factory the upper limit can be improved by an order of magnitude.

The forbidden dark matter cannot annihilate into a pair of heavier partners, either SM particles or its partners in the dark sector, at the late stage of cosmological evolution by definition. We point out the possibility of reactivating the forbidden annihilation channel around supermassive black holes. Being attracted towards a black hole, the forbidden dark matter is significantly accelerated to overcome the annihilation threshold. The subsequent decay of the annihilation products to photon leaves a unique signal around the black hole, which can serve as a smoking gun for the forbidden dark matter. For illustration, the Fermi-LAT data around Sgr $A^*$ provides a preliminary constraint on the thermally averaged cross section of the reactivated forbidden annihilation that is consistent with the DM relic density requirement.

We report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity ($y$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) region $-0.9 < y<0$ and $0.4 < p_{\rm T} <2.0 $ GeV/$c$ in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth-order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, $p_{\rm T}$, and $y$ are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5\% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio $C_4/C_2$ is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including Lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of $C_4/C_2$ at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

The nuclear compound yield ratio ($\mathrm{N}_t \times \mathrm{N}_p/\mathrm{N}_d^2$), which is predicted to be sensitive to the fluctuation of local neutron density, is observed to decrease monotonically with increasing charged-particle multiplicity ($dN_{ch}/dη$) and follows a scaling behavior. The $dN_{ch}/dη$ dependence of the yield ratio is compared to calculations from coalescence and thermal models. Enhancements in the yield ratios relative to the coalescence baseline are observed in the 0\%-10\% most central collisions at 19.6 and 27 GeV, with a significance of 2.3$σ$ and 3.4$σ$, respectively, giving a combined significance of 4.1$σ$. The enhancements are not observed in peripheral collisions or model calculations without critical fluctuation, and decreases with a smaller $p_{T}$ acceptance. The physics implications of these results on the QCD phase structure and the production mechanism of light nuclei in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

We consider decays of $B$ and $K$ mesons into a pseudo-scalar or vector meson plus missing energy. Within the SM, these modes originate from flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes with two neutrinos in the final state. In this paper we consider the experimental upper bounds on these modes and interpret the difference between these bounds and the SM prediction as a window into new light invisible particles. In particular we consider the case where some new symmetry requires the new particles to be produced in pairs. We first construct the general low energy effective Lagrangian coupling an FCNC with two dark sector particles of spin zero, one-half and one. We then present numerical estimates for the constraints that can be placed on these interactions, finding that an effective new physics scale from ${\cal O}(10)$-${\cal O}(10^{11})$ GeV can be probed, with the exact value strongly depending on the interaction structure as well as the mass of the invisible particle. For $K^+\to π^+ \displaystyle{\not} E$ we incorporate into our constraints the effect of using only the signal regions of NA62, and for $B^+\to K^+ \displaystyle{\not} E$ the $q^2$-dependent efficiency of Belle II.

We highlight in particular the most recent results of the BESIII experiment using a quantum-entangled pair of hyperon and antihyperon produced by a charmonium resonance formed in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. The subsequent nonleptonic decays of these hyperon pairs allow for the simultaneous determination of various parameters pertaining to $CP$ violation in the decays. We compare the reported data with the corresponding current predictions for $CP$ asymmetries within the standard model of particle physics. Moreover, we touch on how much these asymmetries might be enhanced by possible new physics beyond the standard model. We also comment briefly on the importance of the proposed super tau-charm factories in future quests for hyperon $CP$-violation.

A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane, whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}=27$ GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity $|η|<1.0$ and at forward rapidity $2.1 < |η|<5.1$. We compare the results based on the directed flow plane ($Ψ_1$) at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane ($Ψ_2$) at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected to result in a larger correlation relative to $Ψ_1$ than to $Ψ_2$, while a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both event planes. In 10-50\% centrality, results using three different event planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95\% confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.

Electroweak precision observables are fundamentally important for testing the standard model (SM) or its extensions. The influences to observables from new physics within the electroweak sector can be expressed in terms of oblique parameters S, T, U. The recently reported W mass excess anomaly by CDF modifies these parameters in a significant way. By performing the global fit with the CDF new W mass measurement data, we obtain $S=0.03 \pm 0.03$, $T=0.06 \pm 0.02$ and $U=0.16 \pm 0.03$ (or $S=0.14 \pm 0.03$, $T=0.24 \pm 0.02$ with $U=0$) which is significantly away from zero as SM would predict. The CDF excess strongly indicates the need of new physics beyond SM. We carry out a global fit to study the influence of two different cases of simple extensions by a hyper-charge $Y=1$ triplet scalar $Δ$ (corresponding to the type-II seesaw model) and a $Y=0$ real triplet scalar $Σ$ on electroweak precision tests to determine parameter space in these models to solve the W mass anomaly and discuss the implications. We find that these triplets can affect the oblique parameters significantly at the tree and loop levels.

In contrast to the $e \leftrightarrow μ$ CLFV transition for which very stringent limits exist, there is still a relatively large discovery space for the $e \to τ$ CLFV transition, potentially to be explored by the EIC. With the latest detector design of ECCE (EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment) and projected integral luminosity of the EIC, we find the $τ$-leptons created in the DIS process $ep\to τX$ are expected to be identified with high efficiency. We develop a class of left-right symmetric theories based on the gauge group $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)$ with a generalized seesaw mechanism for generating the charged fermion masses. Neutrinos are naturally Dirac particles in this setup with their small masses arising from two-loop quantum corrections. We evaluate these two-loop diagrams exactly and analyze the flavor structure of the lepton sector. We find excellent fits to neutrino oscillation data, independent of the right-handed gauge symmetry breaking scale. We also explore the possibility that neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac particles in this framework, with the tiny mass splittings between active and sterile neutrinos arising from Planck-induced corrections and find possible realizations. These models can be tested in the near future with precision cosmological measurements of $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ in CMB which is predicted to be $\simeq 0.14$. This class of models allows for a solution to the strong CP problem via parity symmetry without the need for an axion.

A new $U(1)_X$ gauge boson $X$ primarily interacting with a dark sector can have renormalizable kinetic mixing with the standard model (SM) $U(1)_Y$ gauge boson $Y$. This mixing besides introduces interactions of dark photon and dark sector with SM particles, it also modifies interactions among SM particles. The modified interactions can be casted into the oblique $S$, $T$ and $U$ parameters. We find that with the dark photon mass larger than the $Z$ boson mass, the kinetic mixing effects can reduce the tension of the W mass excess problem reported recently by CDF from $7σ$ deviation to within $3 σ$ compared with theory prediction. If there is non-abelian kinetic mixing between $U(1)_X$ and $SU(2)_L$ gauge bosons, in simple renormalizable models of this type a triplet Higgs is required to generate the mixing. We find that this triplet with a vacuum expectation value of order 5 GeV can naturally explain the W mass excess.

In Type-II seesaw model, an electroweak triplet scalar field $Δ$ with a non-zero vacuum expectation value (vev) $v_Δ$ is introduced to facilitate the generation of small neutrino masses. A non-zero $v_Δ$ also affects the W mass through the electroweak $ρ$ parameter, making it to be less than 1 as predicted by standard model (SM). The component fields in $Δ$ come along introduce additional contributions to reduce the SM rare neutrino trident scattering cross section. These fields also induce new processes not existed in SM, such as $l_i \to \overline{ l_j} l_k l_l$ and $l_i \to l_j γ$. There are severe constraints on these processes which limit the effects on neutrino trident scattering and the $ρ$ parameter and therefore the W mass. The newly measured W mass by CDF makes the central value of $ρ$ parameter to be larger than 1, even larger than previously expected. Combining neutrinoless double beta decay, direct neutrino mass and oscillation data, we find a lower limit for $v_Δ$ as a function of the triplet scalar mass $m_Δ$, $v_Δ> (6.3 \sim 8.4) \mathrm{eV} (100 \mathrm{GeV}/m_Δ)$. To have significant effect on $ρ$ in this model, $v_Δ$ needs to be in the range of a GeV or so. However this implies a very small $m_Δ$ which is ruled out by data. We conclude that the effect of triplet vev $v_Δ$ on the W mass can be neglected. We also find that at 3$σ$ level, the deviation of the ratio for Type-II Seesaw to SM neutrino trident scattering cross section predictions is reduced to be below 1, but is restricted to be larger than 0.98.

Notwithstanding decades of progress since Yukawa first developed a description of the force between nucleons in terms of meson exchange, a full understanding of the strong interaction remains a major challenge in modern science. One remaining difficulty arises from the non-perturbative nature of the strong force, which leads to the phenomenon of quark confinement at distances on the order of the size of the proton. Here we show that in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, where quarks and gluons are set free over an extended volume, two species of produced vector (spin-1) mesons, namely $φ$ and $K^{*0}$, emerge with a surprising pattern of global spin alignment. In particular, the global spin alignment for $φ$ is unexpectedly large, while that for $K^{*0}$ is consistent with zero. The observed spin-alignment pattern and magnitude for the $φ$ cannot be explained by conventional mechanisms, while a model with a connection to strong force fields, i.e. an effective proxy description within the Standard Model and Quantum Chromodynamics, accommodates the current data. This connection, if fully established, will open a potential new avenue for studying the behaviour of strong force fields.

We describe the transverse momentum spectra of $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ produced in different centralities gold-gold (Au-Au) collisions at different collision energies range from 7.7 to 62.4 GeV by a two-component Erlang distribution. The fitting results are consistent with the experimental data, and the centrality- and energy-dependent yield ratios of negative to positive particles are obtained from the normalization constants. Based on the yield ratios, the energy- and centrality-dependent chemical potentials of light hadrons and quarks are extracted. The study shows that the dependences of the three types of particle yield ratios on centrality are not significant, especially for $π$. The logarithms of the three yield ratios show obvious linear dependence on $1/\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ over a range from 7.7 to 62.4 GeV. The extracted chemical potentials show obvious dependence on energy, and decrease with the increase of energy. The dependences of the energy-dependent chemical potentials of light hadrons and quarks on centrality are relatively more obvious in low energy region. The derived curves of chemical potentials for all centralities, from the linear fits of the logarithms of yield ratios vs energy, have the extremum at the same energy of 3.526 GeV, which possibly is the critical energy of phase transition from a liquid-like hadron state to a gas-like quark state in the collision system. With the increase of energy, all types of chemical potentials become small and tend to zero at very high energy, which indicates that with the increase of energy, the hadronic interactions gradually fade and the partonic interactions gradually become greater.

We perform a systematic study of the fermionic DM absorption interactions on electron target in the context of effective field theory. The fermionic DM absorption is not just sensitive to sub-MeV DM with efficient energy release, but also gives a unique signature with clear peak in the electron recoil spectrum whose shape is largely determined by the atomic effects. Fitting with the Xenon1T and PandaX-II data prefers DM mass at $m_χ= 59$keV and 105keV, respectively, while the cut-off scale is probed up to around 1TeV. The DM overproduction in the early Universe, the invisible decay effect on the cosmological evolution, and the astrophysical X(gamma)-ray from the DM visible decays are thoroughly explored to give up-to-date constraints. With stringent bounds on the tensor and pseudo-scalar operators, the other fermionic DM operators are of particular interest at tonne-scale direct detection experiments such as PandaX-4T, XENONnT, and LZ.

Recently Belle collaboration reported new measurements for the branching fractions with the first observing two processes of $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^0\toΛK^0_S)$, $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^0\toΣ^0 K^0_S)$ and updating data for $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^0\toΣ^+ K^-)$. Combined with other known data on charmless two body decays of anti-triplet charmed baryons, a lot of information can be derived with the assistance of $SU(3)$ flavour symmetry. Using $SU(3)$ relations between different decay modes, we can give some predictions based on the new measurements which can be tested with the high luminosity experiments in the future. More interestingly, we find that a global fit is now possible with the addition of new Belle data. In general, there are 18 complex $SU(3)$ invariant amplitudes. We find that a scenario of all amplitudes being real can fit the data well with a $χ^2/d.o.f$ only $0.773$. This indicates that neglecting the phases of the amplitudes is a reasonable assumption. When more data become available, one may be able to get more information for phases in the amplitudes.
We give several comments on the feature of global fit regarding the branching fractions, relations between different decays, and decays involving $K^0$ and $\bar K^0$. Many of the unknown branching fractions and polarization asymmetry parameters of anti-triplet charmed baryon for charmless two body decays are predicted to be accessible by experiments at Belle, Belle~II, BES-III, and LHCb. The validity of $SU(3)$ for charmless two body hadronic decays can be more accurately tested.

Exchanging a $Z^\prime$ gauge boson is a favored mechanism to solve the muon $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. Among such models the $Z^\prime$ from $U(1)_{L_μ- L_τ}$ gauge group has been extensively studied. In this model the same interaction addressing $(g-2)_μ$, leads to an enhanced muon neutrino trident (MNT) process $ν_μN \to ν_μμ\bar μN$ constraining the $Z^\prime$ mass to be less than a few hundred MeV. Many other $Z^\prime$ models face the same problem. It has long been realized that the coupling of $Z^\prime$ in the model can admit $(\bar μγ^μτ+ \bar ν_μγ^μL ν_τ)Z^\prime_μ$ interaction which does not contribute to the MNT process. It can solve $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly for a much wider $Z^\prime$ mass range. However this new interaction induces $τ\to μ\barν_μν_τ$ which rules out it as a solution to $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. Here we propose a mechanism by introducing type-II seesaw $SU(2)_L$ triplet scalars to evade constraints from all known data to allow a wide $Z^\prime$ mass range to solve the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. This mechanism opens a new window for $Z^\prime$ physics.

When this prediction is confronted with recent experimental results from Belle collaboration $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^0\toΞ^-e^+ν_e)=1.31(04\pm07\pm38)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(Ξ_c^0\toΞ^-μ^+ν_μ)=1.27(06\pm10\pm 37)\%$, it is found that the SU(3) symmetry is severely broken. We then consider the generic SU(3) breaking effects in these decays and find that the data can be accommodated in different scenarios but the breaking effects are inevitably large. In some interesting scenarios, we also explore the testable implications in these scenarios which can be tested with more data become available. Similar analyses are carried out for semileptonic anti-triplet beauty baryon to octet baryons and anti-triplet charmed baryons. The validity of SU(3) for these decays can also be examined when data become available.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is predicted to occur as a consequence of a local violation of $\cal P$ and $\cal CP$ symmetries of the strong interaction amidst a strong electro-magnetic field generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Experimental manifestation of the CME involves a separation of positively and negatively charged hadrons along the direction of the magnetic field. Previous measurements of the CME-sensitive charge-separation observables remain inconclusive because of large background contributions. In order to better control the influence of signal and backgrounds, the STAR Collaboration performed a blind analysis of a large data sample of approximately 3.8 billion isobar collisions of $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. Prior to the blind analysis, the CME signatures are predefined as a significant excess of the CME-sensitive observables in Ru+Ru collisions over those in Zr+Zr collisions, owing to a larger magnetic field in the former. A precision down to 0.4% is achieved, as anticipated, in the relative magnitudes of the pertinent observables between the two isobar systems. Observed differences in the multiplicity and flow harmonics at the matching centrality indicate that the magnitude of the CME background is different between the two species. No CME signature that satisfies the predefined criteria has been observed in isobar collisions in this blind analysis.

We discuss the modes $B\to K^{(*)}ν\barν$ in the context of non-standard neutrino interactions that add incoherently to the SM rates. We consider two scenarios: an additional light neutrino; and neutrino lepton flavour violation. We find that an additional light neutrino that interacts with SM fields via a non-universal $Z^\prime$ can increase $R^ν_{K^{(*)}}$ by up to a factor of two without conflicting with $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing. This model then predicts rates for $B_s\to τ^+τ^-$ up to six times larger than the SM. In the context of neutrino lepton flavour violation mediated by leptoquarks we find that the current experimental upper bounds on $R^ν_{K^{(*)}}$ are already more constraining than direct bounds from $B_s\to τ\ell$ and $B\to K^{(*)}τ\ell$ modes for $\ell=e,μ$.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

In this paper, we report the first measurement of the midrapidity net-proton $C_{6}/C_{2}$ from 27, 54.4 and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The dependence on collision centrality and kinematic acceptance in ($p_{T}$, $y$) are analyzed. While for 27 and 54.4 GeV collisions the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ values are close to zero within uncertainties, it is observed that for 200 GeV collisions, the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ ratio becomes progressively negative from peripheral to central collisions. Transport model calculations without critical dynamics predict mostly positive values except for the most central collisions within uncertainties. These observations seem to favor a smooth crossover in the high energy nuclear collisions at top RHIC energy.

The hypothetical dark photon portal connecting the visible and dark sectors of the Universe has received considerable attention in recent years, with a focus on CP-conserving kinetic mixing between the Standard Model (SM) hypercharge gauge boson and a new U(1)$_X$ gauge boson. In the effective field theory context, one may write down non-renormalizable CP-violating kinetic mixing interactions involving the $X$ and SU(2)$_L$ gauge bosons. We construct for the first time a renormalizable model for CP-violating kinetic mixing that induces CP-violating non-Abelian kinetic mixing at mass dimension five. The model grows out of the type-III seesaw model, with the lepton triplets containing right-handed neutrinos playing a crucial role in making the model renormalizable and providing a bridge to the origin of neutrino mass. This scenario also accommodates electron electric dipole moments (EDM) as large as current experimental bound, making future EDM searches an important probe of this scenario.

The muon $(g-2)_μ$ and $b\to s \bar μμ$ induced $B$ anomalies as hints of new physics beyond the standard model (SM) have attracted much attention. These two anomalies indicate that there may exist new interaction specifically related to muon. A lot of theoretical ideas have been proposed to explain these anomalies. Gauged flavor specific $U(1)_{B_q-L_μ}$ is among the promising ones. The new gauge boson $Z'$ from $U(1)_{B_q-L_μ}$ interacts with muon and provides necessary ingredient to solve the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. The $Z'$-quark coupling can generate flavor changing interactions after diagonalization of quark mass matrix between weak eigen-state and mass eigen-state basis. We revisit challenges for such models attempting to explain the $(g-2)_μ$ and $B$ anomalies separately or simultaneously. We find although for $U(1)_{B_q-L_μ}$ models there is still parameter space to provide solutions for separately explaining the $(g-2)_μ$ and $B$ anomalies, there exists no parameter space for such models to solve both the anomalies simultaneously, after taking into account existing constraints from $τ\to μγ$, $τ\to 3 μ$, neutrino trident and $B_s - \bar B_s$ data. Among them leptonic processes restrict $Z^\prime$ mass to be less than a few hundred MeV if required to solve the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly, which causes conflict between data from $B_s - \bar B_s$, $D^0 - \bar D^0$ mixing and also hadron decays with $Z^\prime$ in the final states. The effects of $U(1)_Y$ and $U(1)_{B_q-L_μ}$ kinetic mixing on these anomalies are also studied. We find that neither can these effects do much to bring the two anomalies together to be solved simultaneously.

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions.
This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

In this paper we systematically consider the baryon ($B$) and lepton ($L$) number violating dinucleon to dilepton decays ($pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime+}, pn\to \ell^+\barν^\prime, nn\to \barν\barν^\prime$) with $ΔB=ΔL=-2$ in the framework of effective field theory. We start by constructing a basis of dimension-12 (dim-12) operators mediating such processes in the low energy effective field theory (LEFT) below the electroweak scale. Then we consider their standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) completions upwards and their chiral realizations in baryon chiral perturbation theory (B$χ$PT) downwards. We work to the first nontrivial orders in each effective field theory, collect along the way the matching conditions, and express the decay rates in terms of the Wilson coefficients associated with the dim-12 operators in SMEFT and the low energy constants pertinent to B$χ$PT. We find the current experimental limits push the associated new physics scale larger than $1-3$ TeV, which is still accessible to the future collider searches. Through weak isospin symmetry, we find the current experimental limits on the partial lifetimes of transitions $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime+}, pn\to \ell^+\barν^\prime$ imply stronger limits on $nn\to\barν\barν^\prime$ than their existing lower bounds, which are improved by $2-3$ orders of magnitude. Furthermore, assuming charged mode transitions are also dominantly generated by the similar dim-12 SMEFT interactions, the experimental limits on $pp\to e^+e^+,e^+μ^+,μ^+μ^+$ lead to stronger limits on $pn\to \ell^+_α\barν_β$ with $α,β=e,μ$ than their existing bounds. Conversely, the same assumptions help us to set a lower bound on the lifetime of the experimentally unsearched mode $pp\to e^+τ^+$ from that of $pn\to e^+\barν_τ$, i.e., $Γ^{-1}_{pp\to e^+τ^+}\gtrsim 2\times 10^{34}~\rm yrs$.

Abstract:
We report a systematic measurement of cumulants, $C_{n}$, for net-proton, proton and antiproton multiplicity distributions, and correlation functions, $κ_n$, for proton and antiproton multiplicity distributions up to the fourth order in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV. The $C_{n}$ and $κ_n$ are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, $y$, and transverse momentum, $p_{T}$. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010 -- 2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 0.5) and transverse momentum 0.4 $<$ $p_{\rm T}$ $<$ 2.0 GeV/$c$, using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe a non-monotonic energy dependence ($\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 7.7 -- 62.4 GeV) of the net-proton $C_{4}$/$C_{2}$ with the significance of 3.1$σ$ for the 0-5\% central Au+Au collisions. This is consistent with the expectations of critical fluctuations in a QCD-inspired model. Thermal and transport model calculations show a monotonic variation with $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$. For the multiparticle correlation functions, we observe significant negative values for a two-particle correlation function, $κ_2$, of protons and antiprotons, which are mainly due to the effects of baryon number conservation. Furthermore, it is found that the four-particle correlation function, $κ_4$, of protons plays a role in determining the energy dependence of proton $C_4/C_1$ below 19.6 GeV, which cannot be understood by the effect of baryon number conservation.

Abstract:
General flavor changing interactions for a Goldstone boson (GB) to fermions due to a spontaneous global $U(1)_G$ symmetry breaking are discussed. This GB may be the Axion, solving the strong QCD CP problem, if there is a QCD anomaly for the $U(1)_G$ charge assignments for quarks. Or it may be the Majoron in models from lepton number violation in producing seesaw Majorana neutrino masses if the symmetry breaking scale is much higher than the electroweak scale. It may also, in principle, play the roles of Axion and Majoron simultaneously as far as providing solution for the strong CP problem and generating a small Majorana neutrino masses are concerned. Great attentions have been focused on flavor conserving GB interactions. Recently flavor changing Axion and Majoron models have been studied in the hope to find new physics from rare decays in the intensity frontier. In this work, we will provide a systematic model building aspect study for a GB having flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions in both the quark and lepton sectors, or separately in the quark, charged lepton and neutrino sectors with sources of FCNC interactions identified in detail. We provide a general proof of the equivalence of using physical GB components and GB broken generators for calculating GB couplings to two gluons and two photons, and some issues related to models having spontaneous CP violation are discussed. We will also provide some details for obtaining FCNC GB interactions in several popular models, such as the Type-I, -II, -III seesaw and Left-Right symmetric models, and point out some special features in these models.

We discuss the unique baryon number violation by two units neutron decay mode $n\to \bar p e^+χ$, with $χ$ being the standard model (SM) neutrino $ν$ or antineutrino $\barν$ or any beyond SM light fermion, in the framework of effective field theory. This mode is kinematically allowed but rarely discussed theoretically or searched for experimentally. We estimate the lower bound on its partial lifetime from that of the dinucleon decay $np\to e^+χ$ per oxygen nucleus $^{16}$O set by the Super-Kamiokande experiment, with a conservative bound $Γ^{-1}_{n\to\bar pe^+χ}>5.7\times 10^{39}~\rm yrs$. We also discuss its characteristic signature for the future experimental search and astrophysical implications.

When the Standard Model Higgs sector is extended with a complex singlet that breaks global lepton number symmetry spontaneously, a massless Goldstone boson called the Majoron J arises. In addition to increasing Higgs invisible decay through mixing, the Majoron can generally have flavor-changing interactions with fermions. We find that type-III seesaw model poses such interesting properties with both charged leptons and neutrinos. This opens up new channels to search for the Majoron. We use the experimental data such as muonium-anti-muonium oscillation and flavor-changing neutrino and charged lepton decays to put constraints on the couplings. As a novel way to reveal the chiral properties of these interactions, we propose an experimentally measurable polarization asymmetry of flavor-changing l to l' J decays.

The correlation between the peak spectra energy ($E_p$) and the equivalent isotropic energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the so-called Amati relation, is often used to constrain the high-redshift Hubble diagram. Assuming Lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmology, Wang et al. found a $\gtrsim 3σ$ tension in the data-calibrated Amati coefficients between low- and high-redshift GRB samples. To reduce the impact of fiducial cosmology, we use the Parameterization based on cosmic Age (PAge), an almost model-independent framework to trace the cosmological expansion history. We find that the low- and high-redshift tension in Amati coefficients stays almost the same for the broad class of models covered by PAge, indicating that the cosmological assumption is not the dominant driver of the redshift evolution of GRB luminosity correlation. Next, we analyze the selection effect due to flux limits in observations. We find Amati relation evolves much more significantly across energy scales of $E_{\rm iso}$. We debias the GRB data by selectively discarding samples to match low-$z$ and high-$z$ $E_{\rm iso}$ distributions. After debiasing, the Amati coefficients agree well between low-$z$ and high-$z$ data groups, whereas the evidence of $E_{\rm iso}$-dependence of Amati relation remains to be strong. Thus, the redshift evolution of GRB luminosity correlation can be fully interpreted as a selection bias, and does not imply cosmological evolution of GRBs.
