BHLS$_2$ Upgrade : $τ$ spectra, muon HVP and the [$π^0,~η,~η^\prime$] System

Abstract: The generic Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model has given rise to the BHLS$_2$ variant which introduces symmetry breaking in the vector meson sector; the central mechanism is a modification of the covariant derivative at the root of the HLS approach. However, the description of the Belle $τ$ dipion spectra is not satisfactory whereas the dealing with its annihilation sector (… ▽ More The generic Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model has given rise to the BHLS$_2$ variant which introduces symmetry breaking in the vector meson sector; the central mechanism is a modification of the covariant derivative at the root of the HLS approach. However, the description of the Belle $τ$ dipion spectra is not satisfactory whereas the dealing with its annihilation sector ($e^+ e^- \rightarrow π^+ π^-/π^+ π^-π^0/ π^0 γ/ηγ/K^+ K^-/K_L K_S$) is optimum. This issue is solved by an additional breaking term allowing to include the $[π^0,η,η^\prime]$ system. This extension of the usual 't~Hooft determinant term only affects the BHLS$_2$ kinetic energy term. One obtains a fair account for the $τ$ dipion spectra as well as for the annihilation channels. The Belle dipion spectrum provides evidence for a violation of CVC in the $τ$ lepton decay; this evidence is strengthened by imposing the conditions $<0|J_μ^q |[q^\prime \overline{q^\prime}](p)>=ip_μf_q δ_{q q^\prime }, \{ [q \overline{q}], q=u,d,s\}$ on BHLS$_2$ axial current matrix elements. BHLS$_2$ is found to recover the usual (completed) formulae for the [$π^0,~η,~η^\prime$] mixing parameters and the global fits return mixing parameter values in agreement with expectations and better uncertainties. Updating the muon HVP, one argues that the strong tension between the KLOE and BaBar pion form factors imposes to provide two solutions : $a_μ^{HVP-LO}({\rm KLOE})=687.31 \pm 2.93$ and $a_μ^{HVP-LO}({\rm BaBar})=692.36 \pm 2.95$, in units of $10^{-10}$, rather than some combination of these. Taking into account common systematics, their differences with the experimental BNL-FNAL average value exhibit significances $> 5.4σ$ (KLOE) and $> 4.1σ$ (BaBar) with fit probabilities favoring the former. △ Less

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon in the Standard Model

Abstract: We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical… ▽ More We review the present status of the Standard Model calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_μ/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_μ^\text{SM}=116\,591\,810(43)\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$σ$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics. △ Less

Physics results derived from global fits involving or excluding the $τ$ dipion spectra are found consistent with each others. Therefore, no obvious mismatch between the $τ$ and $e^+e^- $ physics properties arises and the $τ-e^+e^- $ puzzle vanishes within the broken HLS Model. △ Less

Muon g-2 estimates : Can one trust Effective Lagrangians and global fits ?

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model, supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking mechanisms, provides an Effective Lagrangian (BHLS) which encompasses a large number of processes within a unified framework; a global fit procedure allows for a simultaneous description of the e+ e- annihilation into the 6 final states $π^+ π^-$, $π^0 γ$, $ηγ$, $π^+ π^- π^0$,… ▽ More Previous studies have shown that the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Model, supplied with appropriate symmetry breaking mechanisms, provides an Effective Lagrangian (BHLS) which encompasses a large number of processes within a unified framework; a global fit procedure allows for a simultaneous description of the e+ e- annihilation into the 6 final states $π^+ π^-$, $π^0 γ$, $ηγ$, $π^+ π^- π^0$, $K^+ K^-$, $K_l K_s$ and includes the dipion spectrum in the τ decay and some more light meson decay partial widths. The contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_{th}$ of these annihilation channels over the range of validity of the HLS model (up to 1.05 GeV) is found much improved compared to its partner derived from integrating the measured spectra directly. However, most spectra for the process $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^-$ undergo overall scale uncertainties which dominate the other sources, and one may suspect some bias in the dipion contribution to $a_{th}$. However, an iterated fit algorithm, shown to lead to unbiased results by a Monte Carlo study, is defined and applied succesfully to the $e^+ e^- \to π^+ π^-$ data samples from CMD2, SND, KLOE, BaBar and BESSIII. The iterated fit solution is shown to be further improved and leads to a value for $a_μ$ different from $a_{exp}$ above the 4 $σ$ level. The contribution of the $π^+ π^-$ intermediate state up to 1.05 GeV to $a_{th}$ derived from the iterated fit benefits from an uncertainty about 3 times smaller than the corresponding usual estimate. Therefore, global fit techniques are shown to work and lead to improved unbiased results. △ Less

Abstract: Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time… ▽ More Angular correlations in $B^+\to X(3872) K^+$ decays, with $X(3872)\to ρ^0 J/ψ$, $ρ^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-$, are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the $J^{PC}$ value of the $X(3872)$ meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. Abstract: The production cross-sections of B mesons are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using data collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to a integrated luminosity of 0.36 fb-1. The B+, B0 and Bs0 mesons are reconstructed in the exclusive decays B+ -> J/psi K+, B0 -> J/psi K*0 and Bs0 -> J/psi phi, with J/psi -> mu+ mu-, K*0 -> K+ pi- and phi -> K+ K-. First observation of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$

Abstract: The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ is reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV$, collected with the LHCb detector. A yield of $30 \pm 6$ $B_s^0 \rightarrow (K^+K^-)(K^-π^+)$ decays is found in the mass windows $1012.5 < M(K^+K^-) < 1026.5 MeV/c^2$ and… ▽ More The first observation of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ is reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV$, collected with the LHCb detector. A yield of $30 \pm 6$ $B_s^0 \rightarrow (K^+K^-)(K^-π^+)$ decays is found in the mass windows $1012.5 < M(K^+K^-) < 1026.5 MeV/c^2$ and $746 < M(K^-π^+)< 1046 MeV/c^2$. The signal yield is found to be dominated by $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays, and the corresponding branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}) = (1.10 \pm 0.24 (stat) \pm 0.14 (syst) \pm 0.08 (f_d/f_s)) \times 10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the ratio of fragmentation fractions $f_d/f_s$ which accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ mesons. The significance of $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ signal is 6.1 standard deviations. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays is found to be $f_0 = 0.51 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.07 (syst)$. △ Less

Precision measurement of D meson mass differences

Abstract: Using three- and four-body decays of $D$ mesons produced in semileptonic $b$-hadron decays, precision measurements of $D$ meson mass differences are made together with a measurement of the $D^{0}$ mass. The measurements are based on a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0 fb^{-1}$ collected in $pp$ collisions at 7\,TeV. Observation of $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^+$ and $B^+_c \rightarrow J/ψD_s^{*+}$ decays

Abstract: The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. In a sample… ▽ More The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. In a sample of 27\,617 B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays, where the dominant contribution comes from B_s^0\to J/ψφ decays, these parameters are measured to be φ_s = 0.07 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s \equiv (Γ_L+Γ_H)/2 = 0.663 \pm 0.005 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_L -Γ_H = 0.100 \pm 0.016 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst) & ps^-1, corresponding to the single most precise determination of φ_s, ΔΓ_s and Γ_s. The result of performing a combined analysis with B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives φ_s = 0.01 \pm 0.07 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s = 0.661 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s = 0.106 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.007 (syst) & ps^-1. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on $\tanβ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the $m_{h^0}^\mathrm{max}$ scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP-odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV. △ Less

Prompt charm production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

Abstract: Charm production at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The decays D0 -> K- pi+, D+ -> K- pi+ pi+, D*+ -> D0(K- pi+) pi+, D_s+ -> phi(K- K+) pi+, Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+, and their charge conjugates are analysed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 nb^{-1}. Differential cross-sections dsigma/dp_T are measured for prompt production of… ▽ More Charm production at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The decays D0 -> K- pi+, D+ -> K- pi+ pi+, D*+ -> D0(K- pi+) pi+, D_s+ -> phi(K- K+) pi+, Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+, and their charge conjugates are analysed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 nb^{-1}. Differential cross-sections dsigma/dp_T are measured for prompt production of the five charmed hadron species in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < p_T < 8 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. Theoretical predictions are compared to the measured differential cross-sections. The integrated cross-sections of the charm hadrons are computed in the above p_T-y range, and their ratios are reported. A combination of the five integrated cross-section measurements gives sigma(c\bar{c})_{p_T < 8 GeV/c, 2.0 < y < 4.5} = 1419 +/- 12 (stat) +/- 116 (syst) +/- 65 (frag) microbarn, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the fragmentation functions. △ Less

The mass and width of the f'2(1525) are measured to be 1522.2 +/- 2.8^{+5.3}_{-2.0} MeV and 84 +/- 6^{+10}_{-5} MeV, respectively. The cross-section times branching fractions to two muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 are measured to be $ σ_{pp\rightarrow J/ψ(\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-})} (2.0 <η_{μ^{\pm}}< 4.5) = 307 \pm 21 \pm 36 \text{pb}, σ_{pp\rightarrow ψ(2S) (\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-})} (2.0 <η_{μ^{\pm}}< 4.5) = 7.8 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.0 \text{pb}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with results from previous experiments and theoretical predictions. The $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross-section has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The results are consistent with measurements obtained at HERA and confirm a similar power law behaviour for the photoproduction cross-section. △ Less

In the J/ψpi+pi- final state significant production of f0(500) and rho(770) resonances is found, both of which can be used for CP violation studies. In contrast evidence for the f0(980) resonance is not found, thus establishing the first upper limit on the branching fraction product B(B0->J/ψf0(980) x B(f0(980)-> pi+ pi-) < 1.1x10^{-6}, leading to an upper limit on the absolute value of the mixing angle of the f0(980)$ with the f0(500) of <31 degrees, both at 90% confidence level. △ Less

The dependence of $f_{s}/f_{d}$ on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $B$ meson is determined using the decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$. There is evidence for a decrease with increasing transverse momentum, whereas the ratio remains constant as a function of pseudorapidity. In addition, the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.0822 \pm 0.0011 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.0025 (\textrm{syst})$. △ Less

Abstract: This Letter reports a measurement of the CP violation observables S_J/ψKS0 and C_J/ψKS0 in the decay channel B0 -> J/ψ KS0 performed with 1.0/fb of pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The fit to the data yields S_J/ψKS0 = 0.73 +- 0.07 (stat) +- 0.04 (syst) and C_J/ψKS0 = 0.03 +- 0.09 (stat) +- 0.01 (syst). First observation of the decay $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0 \to B^{*+} K^-$ and studies of excited $B_s$ mesons

Abstract: Properties of the orbitally excited (L=1) $B_s$ states are studied using 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson decaying to $B^{*+} K^-$ is reported, and the corresponding branching fraction measured relative to the $B^+ K^-$ decay mode. First evidence for the decay Bs -> mu+ mu-

Abstract: A search for the rare decays Bs->mu+mu- and B0->mu+mu- is performed using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The data samples comprise 1.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and 1.0 fb^-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV. We observe an excess of Bs -> mu+ mu- candidates with respect to the background expectation. The probability that the backgr… ▽ More A search for the rare decays Bs->mu+mu- and B0->mu+mu- is performed using data collected in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The data samples comprise 1.1 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and 1.0 fb^-1 at sqrt{s}=7 TeV. We observe an excess of Bs -> mu+ mu- candidates with respect to the background expectation. The probability that the background could produce such an excess or larger is 5.3 x 10^-4 corresponding to a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations. A maximum-likelihood fit gives a branching fraction of BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) = (3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2}) x 10^-9, where the statistical uncertainty is 95% of the total uncertainty. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The observed number of B0 -> mu+ mu- candidates is consistent with the background expectation, giving an upper limit of BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 9.4 x 10^-10 at 95% confidence level. △ Less

An Update of the HLS Estimate of the Muon g-2

Abstract: A global fit of parameters allows us to pin down the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) effective Lagrangian, which we apply for the prediction of the leading hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g-2. The latter is dominated by the annihilation channel e+e- -> pi+pi-, for which data are available by scan (CMD-2 and SND) and ISR (KLOE-2008, KLOE-2010 and BaBar) experiments. The latter is dominated by the annihilation channel e+e- -> pi+pi-, for which data are available by scan (CMD-2 and SND) and ISR (KLOE-2008, KLOE-2010 and BaBar) experiments. It is well known that the different data sets are not in satisfactory agreement. In fact it is possible to fix the model parameters without using the pi+pi- data, by using instead the dipion spectra measured in the tau decays together with experimental spectra for the pi0 gamma, eta gamma, pi+pi-pi0, K+K-, K0bar K0 final states supplemented by specific meson decay properties. Among these, the accepted decay width for rho0 -> e+e- and the partial widths and phase information for the omega/phi -> pi+pi- transitions, are considered. It is then shown that, relying on this global data set, the HLS model, appropriately broken, allows to predict accurately the pion form factor up to 1.05 GeV. It is shown that the data samples provided by CMD-2, SND and KLOE-2010 behave consistently with each other and with the other considered data. Consistency problems with the KLOE-2008 and BaBar data samples are substantiated. "All data" global fits are investigated by applying reweighting the conflicting data sets. Constraining to our best fit, the broken HLS model yields a_mu(th) = (11659169.55 [+1.26 -0.59]_phi +[+0.00 -2.00]_tau +/- 5.21_(th))~10**-10 associated with a very good global fit probability. Correspondingly, we find that Delta a_mu=a_mu (exp)- a_mu (th) exhibits a significance ranging between 4.7 and 4.9 sigma. △ Less
