However, a key challenge remains in the evaluation of data-driven algorithms within DTs, particularly the transfer of learning from simulations to real-world environments. In this work, we investigate the sim-to-real gap in developing a digital twin for the NSF PAWR Platform, POWDER. We first develop a 3D model of the University of Utah campus, incorporating geographical measurements and all rooftop POWDER nodes. We then assess the accuracy of various path loss models used in training modeling and control policies, examining the impact of each model on sim-to-real link performance predictions. Finally, we discuss the lessons learned from model selection and simulation design, offering guidance for the implementation of DT-enabled wireless networks.

In this work, we present a new federation framework for UnionLabs, an innovative cloud-based resource-sharing infrastructure designed for next-generation (NextG) and Internet of Things (IoT) over-the-air (OTA) experiments. The framework aims to reduce the federation complexity for testbeds developers by automating tedious backend operations, thereby providing scalable federation and remote access to various wireless testbeds. We first describe the key components of the new federation framework, including the Systems Manager Integration Engine (SMIE), the Automated Script Generator (ASG), and the Database Context Manager (DCM). We then prototype and deploy the new Federation Plane on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) public cloud, demonstrating its effectiveness by federating two wireless testbeds: i) UB NeXT, a 5G-and-beyond (5G+) testbed at the University at Buffalo, and ii) UT IoT, an IoT testbed at the University of Utah. Through this work we aim to initiate a grassroots campaign to democratize access to wireless research testbeds with heterogeneous hardware resources and network environment, and accelerate the establishment of a mature, open experimental ecosystem for the wireless community. The API of the new Federation Plane will be released to the community after internal testing is completed.

Semantic communications have emerged as a promising solution to address the challenge of efficient communication in rapidly evolving and increasingly complex Internet of Things (IoT) networks. However, protecting the security of semantic communication systems within the distributed and heterogeneous IoT networks is critical issues that need to be addressed. We develop a secure and efficient distributed semantic communication system in IoT scenarios, focusing on three aspects: secure system maintenance, efficient system update, and privacy-preserving system usage. Firstly, we propose a blockchain-based interaction framework that ensures the integrity, authentication, and availability of interactions among IoT devices to securely maintain system. This framework includes a novel digital signature verification mechanism designed for semantic communications, enabling secure and efficient interactions with semantic communications. Secondly, to improve the efficiency of interactions, we develop a flexible semantic communication scheme that leverages compressed semantic knowledge bases. This scheme reduces the data exchange required for system update and is adapt to dynamic task requirements and the diversity of device capabilities. Thirdly, we exploit the integration of differential privacy into semantic communications. We analyze the implementation of differential privacy taking into account the lossy nature of semantic communications and wireless channel distortions. An joint model-channel noise mechanism is introduced to achieve differential privacy preservation in semantic communications without compromising the system's functionality. Experiments show that the system is able to achieve integrity, availability, efficiency and the preservation of privacy.

This paper proposes a dynamic capacitance matching (DCM)-based RC current response algorithm for calculating the current waveform of a signal line without performing SPICE simulation. Specifically, unlike previous method such as CCS model, driver linear representation, waveform functional fitting or equivalent load capacitance, our algorithm does not rely on fixed reduced model of both standard cell driver and RC load. Instead, our algorithm approaches the current waveform dynamically by computing current responses of the target driver for various load scenarios. Besides, we creatively use symbolic expression to combine the y-parameter of RC network with the pre-characterized driver library in order to perform capacitance matching by considering over/under-shoot effect. Our algorithm is experimentally verified on 40nm CMOS technology and has been partially adopted by latest commercial tool for other nodes. Experimental results show that our algorithm has excellent resolution and promising efficiency compared with traditional methods and SPICE golden result, especially for application in computing delay, power and signal line electromigration.

In existing wireless networks, the control programs have been designed manually and for certain predefined scenarios. This process is complicated and error-prone, and the resulting control programs are not resilient to disruptive changes. Data-driven control based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) has been envisioned as a key technique to automate the modeling, optimization and control of complex wireless systems. However, existing AI/ML techniques rely on sufficient well-labeled data and may suffer from slow convergence and poor generalizability. In this article, focusing on digital twin-assisted wireless unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems, we provide a survey of emerging techniques that can enable fast-converging data-driven control of wireless systems with enhanced generalization capability to new environments. These include SLAM-based sensing and network softwarization for digital twin construction, robust reinforcement learning and system identification for domain adaptation, and testing facility sharing and federation. The corresponding research opportunities are also discussed.

This article targets at addressing the robust prescribed-time coordination control (PTCC) problems for single-integrator cooperative-antagonistic networks (CANs) with external disturbances under arbitrary fixed signed digraphs without any structural constraints. Toward this end, the PTCC problems for nominal single-integrator CANs without disturbances are first investigated and a fully distributed control protocol with a time-varying gain, which grows to infinity as the time approaches the settling time, is proposed utilizing the relative states of neighboring agents. Then, based on the proposed control protocol for the nominal single-integrator CANs, a new second-order prescribed-time sliding mode control protocol is constructed to achieve accurate PTCC for single-integrator CANs in the presence of external disturbances. Using Lyapunov based analysis, sufficient conditions to guarantee the prescribed-time stability, bipartite consensus, interval bipartite consensus, and bipartite containment of single-integrator CANs without or with disturbances are, respectively, derived. In the end, numerical simulations are given to confirm the derived results.

Accurate segmentation of the blood vessels of the retina is an important step in clinical diagnosis of ophthalmic diseases. Many deep learning frameworks have come up for retinal blood vessels segmentation tasks. However, the complex vascular structure and uncertain pathological features make the blood vessel segmentation still very challenging. A novel U-shaped network named Multi-module Concatenation which is based on Atrous convolution and multi-kernel pooling is put forward to retinal vessels segmentation in this paper. The proposed network structure retains three layers the essential structure of U-Net, in which the atrous convolution combining the multi-kernel pooling blocks are designed to obtain more contextual information. The spatial attention module is concatenated with dense atrous convolution module and multi-kernel pooling module to form a multi-module concatenation. And different dilation rates are selected by cascading to acquire a larger receptive field in atrous convolution. Adequate comparative experiments are conducted on these public retinal datasets: DRIVE, STARE and CHASE_DB1. The results show that the proposed method is effective, especially for microvessels. As business of Alibaba expands across the world among various industries, higher standards are imposed on the service quality and reliability of big data cloud computing platforms which constitute the infrastructure of Alibaba Cloud. However, root cause analysis in these platforms is non-trivial due to the complicated system architecture. In this paper, we propose a root cause analysis framework called CloudRCA which makes use of heterogeneous multi-source data including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), logs, as well as topology, and extracts important features via state-of-the-art anomaly detection and log analysis techniques. The engineered features are then utilized in a Knowledge-informed Hierarchical Bayesian Network (KHBN) model to infer root causes with high accuracy and efficiency. Ablation study and comprehensive experimental comparisons demonstrate that, compared to existing frameworks, CloudRCA 1) consistently outperforms existing approaches in f1-score across different cloud systems; 2) can handle novel types of root causes thanks to the hierarchical structure of KHBN; 3) performs more robustly with respect to algorithmic configurations; and 4) scales more favorably in the data and feature sizes. Experiments also show that a cross-platform transfer learning mechanism can be adopted to further improve the accuracy by more than 10\%. CloudRCA has been integrated into the diagnosis system of Alibaba Cloud and employed in three typical cloud computing platforms including MaxCompute, Realtime Compute and Hologres. It saves Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) more than $20\%$ in the time spent on resolving failures in the past twelve months and improves service reliability significantly.

Lossy image compression is pervasively conducted to save communication bandwidth, resulting in undesirable compression artifacts. Recently, extensive approaches have been proposed to reduce image compression artifacts at the decoder side; however, they require a series of architecture-identical models to process images with different quality, which are inefficient and resource-consuming. Besides, it is common in practice that compressed images are with unknown quality and it is intractable for existing approaches to select a suitable model for blind quality enhancement. In this paper, we propose a resource-efficient blind quality enhancement (RBQE) approach for compressed images. Specifically, our approach blindly and progressively enhances the quality of compressed images through a dynamic deep neural network (DNN), in which an early-exit strategy is embedded. Then, our approach can automatically decide to terminate or continue enhancement according to the assessed quality of enhanced images. Consequently, slight artifacts can be removed in a simpler and faster process, while the severe artifacts can be further removed in a more elaborate process. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our RBQE approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of both blind quality enhancement and resource efficiency. The code is available at https://github.com/RyanXingQL/RBQE.

Recent breakthroughs in Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have fueled a growing demand for DNN chips. However, designing DNN chips is non-trivial because: (1) mainstream DNNs have millions of parameters and operations; (2) the large design space due to the numerous design choices of dataflows, processing elements, memory hierarchy, etc.; and (3) an algorithm/hardware co-design is needed to allow the same DNN functionality to have a different decomposition, which would require different hardware IPs to meet the application specifications. Therefore, DNN chips take a long time to design and require cross-disciplinary experts. To enable fast and effective DNN chip design, we propose AutoDNNchip - a DNN chip generator that can automatically generate both FPGA- and ASIC-based DNN chip implementation given DNNs from machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch) for a designated application and dataset. Specifically, AutoDNNchip consists of two integrated enablers: (1) a Chip Predictor, built on top of a graph-based accelerator representation, which can accurately and efficiently predict a DNN accelerator's energy, throughput, and area based on the DNN model parameters, hardware configuration, technology-based IPs, and platform constraints; and (2) a Chip Builder, which can automatically explore the design space of DNN chips (including IP selection, block configuration, resource balancing, etc.), optimize chip design via the Chip Predictor, and then generate optimized synthesizable RTL to achieve the target design metrics. Experimental results show that our Chip Predictor's predicted performance differs from real-measured ones by < 10% when validated using 15 DNN models and 4 platforms (edge-FPGA/TPU/GPU and ASIC). Furthermore, accelerators generated by our AutoDNNchip can achieve better (up to 3.86X improvement) performance than that of expert-crafted state-of-the-art accelerators.

However, we discover that when we split that data into training and testing sets at the subject level, we are not able to obtain similar performance, bringing the validity of many of the previous studies into question. Furthermore, we point out that previous works use different subsets of the ADNI data, making comparison across similar works tricky. In this study, we present the results of three splitting methods, discuss the motivations behind their validity, and report our results using all of the available subjects.

In contrast with traditional video, omnidirectional video enables spherical viewing direction with support for head-mounted displays, providing an interactive and immersive experience. Unfortunately, to the best of our knowledge, there are few visual quality assessment (VQA) methods, either subjective or objective, for omnidirectional video coding. This paper proposes both subjective and objective methods for assessing quality loss in encoding omnidirectional video. Specifically, we first present a new database, which includes the viewing direction data from several subjects watching omnidirectional video sequences. Then, from our database, we find a high consistency in viewing directions across different subjects. The viewing directions are normally distributed in the center of the front regions, but they sometimes fall into other regions, related to video content. Given this finding, we present a subjective VQA method for measuring difference mean opinion score (DMOS) of the whole and regional omnidirectional video, in terms of overall DMOS (O-DMOS) and vectorized DMOS (V-DMOS), respectively. Moreover, we propose two objective VQA methods for encoded omnidirectional video, in light of human perception characteristics of omnidirectional video. One method weighs the distortion of pixels with regard to their distances to the center of front regions, which considers human preference in a panorama. The other method predicts viewing directions according to video content, and then the predicted viewing directions are leveraged to allocate weights to the distortion of each pixel in our objective VQA method. Finally, our experimental results verify that both the subjective and objective methods proposed in this paper advance state-of-the-art VQA for omnidirectional video.

This paper studies optimal tracking performance issues for multi-input-multi-output linear time-invariant systems under networked control with limited bandwidth and additive colored white Gaussian noise channel. The tracking performance is measured by control input energy and the energy of the error signal between the output of the system and the reference signal with respect to a Brownian motion random process. This paper focuses on two kinds of network parameters, the basic network parameter-bandwidth and the additive colored white Gaussian noise, and studies the tracking performance limitation problem. The best attainable tracking performance is obtained, and the impact of limited bandwidth and additive colored white Gaussian noise of the communication channel on the attainable tracking performance is revealed. It is shown that the optimal tracking performance depends on nonminimum phase zeros, gain at all frequencies and their directions unitary vector of the given plant, as well as the limited bandwidth and additive colored white Gaussian noise of the communication channel. The simulation results are finally given to illustrate the theoretical results.

This paper studies the time-varying formation tracking for multiple manipulator systems (MMSs) under fixed and switching directed graphs with a dynamic leader, whose acceleration cannot change too fast. An explicit mathematical formulation of time-varying formation is developed based on the related practical applications. A class of extended inverse dynamics control algorithms combining with distributed sliding-mode estimators are developed to address the aforementioned problem. By invoking finite-time stability arguments, several novel criteria (including sufficient criteria, necessary and sufficient criteria) for global finite-time stability of MMSs are established.
