It is becoming cheaper to launch disinformation operations at scale using AI-generated content, in particular 'deepfake' technology. We have observed instances of deepfakes in political campaigns, where generated content is employed to both bolster the credibility of certain narratives (reinforcing outcomes) and manipulate public perception to the detriment of targeted candidates or causes (adversarial outcomes). We discuss the threats from deepfakes in politics, highlight model specifications underlying different types of deepfake generation methods, and contribute an accessible evaluation of the efficacy of existing detection methods. We provide this as a summary for lawmakers and civil society actors to understand how the technology may be applied in light of existing policies regulating its use. We highlight the limitations of existing detection mechanisms and discuss the areas where policies and regulations are required to address the challenges of deepfakes.

Multiagent social network simulations are an avenue that can bridge the communication gap between the public and private platforms in order to develop solutions to a complex array of issues relating to online safety. While there are significant challenges relating to the scale of multiagent simulations, efficient learning from observational and interventional data to accurately model micro and macro-level emergent effects, there are equally promising opportunities not least with the advent of large language models that provide an expressive approximation of user behavior. In this position paper, we review prior art relating to social network simulation, highlighting challenges and opportunities for future work exploring multiagent security using agent-based models of social networks

Natural disasters act as a serious threat globally, requiring effective and efficient disaster management and recovery. This paper focuses on classifying natural disaster images using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Multiple CNN architectures were built and trained on a dataset containing images of earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and volcanoes. A stacked CNN ensemble approach proved to be the most effective, achieving 95% accuracy and an F1 score going up to 0.96 for individual classes. Tuning hyperparameters of individual models for optimization was critical to maximize the models' performance. The stacking of CNNs with XGBoost acting as the meta-model utilizes the strengths of the CNN and ResNet models to improve the overall accuracy of the classification. Results obtained from the models illustrated the potency of CNN-based models for automated disaster image classification. This lays the foundation for expanding these techniques to build robust systems for disaster response, damage assessment, and recovery management.

The paper posits a computationally-efficient algorithm for multi-class facial image classification in which images are constrained with translation, rotation, scale, color, illumination and affine distortion. The proposed method is divided into five main building blocks including Haar-Cascade for face detection, Bilateral Filter for image preprocessing to remove unwanted noise, Affine Speeded-Up Robust Features (ASURF) for keypoint detection and description, Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors (VLAD) for feature quantization and Cloud Forest for image classification. The proposed method aims at improving the accuracy and the time taken for face recognition systems. The usage of the Cloud Forest algorithm as a classifier on three benchmark datasets, namely the FACES95, FACES96 and ORL facial datasets, showed promising results. The proposed methodology using Cloud Forest algorithm successfully improves the recognition model by 2-12\% when differentiated against other ensemble techniques like the Random Forest classifier depending upon the dataset used.
