A magnetic phase diagram for EuPdSn_2 is constructed based on magnetization, DC-susceptibility and specific heat as a function of applied field, and neutron diffraction results at zero field. The contribution of the ferromagnetic FM and antiferromagnetic AFM components to the measured magnetic susceptibility can be separated and weighted as a function of the applied field B by taking the temperature dependence of the neutron counts from the FM phase at B=0 as a reference. In the magnetically ordered phase, the temperature dependence of the specific heat does not follow the mean-field prediction for the Eu^{2+} J=7/2 quantum number rather that for J=5/2. This deviation and the consequent discrepancy for the entropy is discussed in the context of a non-Zeeman distribution of the eight fold ground state. Comparing the respective variations of magnetization M(T,B) and entropy S(T,B), the thermodynamic relationship dM/dT=dS/dB=0 is observed for the ranges: 0<T<10K and 0<B<0.4T.

We present here a rare example of electronuclear quantum criticality in a metal. The compound YbCu4.6Au0.4 is located at an unconventional quantum critical point (QCP). In this material the relevant Kondo and RKKY exchange interactions are very weak, of the order of 1 K. Furthermore, there is strong competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic correlations, possibly due to geometrical frustration within the fcc Yb sublattice. This causes strong spin fluctuations which prevent the system to order magnetically. Because of the very low Kondo temperature the Yb3+ 4f-electrons couple weakly with the conduction electrons allowing the coupling to the nuclear moments of the 171Yb and 173Yb isotopes to become important. Thus, the quantum critical fluctuations observed at the QCP do not originate from purely electronic states but from entangled electronuclear states. This is evidenced by the anomalous temperature and field dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures.

Magnetic, thermal and transport properties of the non-centrosymmetric compound Eu$_2$Pd$_2$Sn are revisited after including new measurements. In its paramagnetic phase, the outstanding feature of this compound is the formation of Eu$^{2+}$ dimers that allows to understand the deviation of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ from the C-W law below about 70\,K, the field dependent magnetization $M(B)$ variation below $\approx 80$\,K and the reduced entropy at the ordering temperature $S(T_N)= 0.64R\ln(8)$. A significant change of the exchange interactions occurs between $T\approx 70$\,K (where $θ_P = 18$\,K) and $T_N = 13.3$\,K (where $θ_P =-4.5$\,K). The strong electronic overlap, arising from the reduced Eu-Eu spacing compared with that of pure Eu$^{2+}$ is expected to power these quasiparticles formation, inducing a significant reformulation of the magnetic structure.
A rich magnetic phase diagram is obtained from the analysis of the derivatives of the magnetic parameters: $\partial χ/\partial T$ and $\partial M/\partial B$, and the field dependence of the specific heat. Two critical points are recognized and a tentative description of the magnetic structures is proposed. The possible formation of a skyrmion lattice, that arises from the presence of magnetically frustrated pockets in the phase diagram, is suggested by theoretical studies on hexagonal structures exhibiting similar interactions pattern.

From the magnetic susceptibility measurements a divalent state of Eu rare earth element was determined together with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 11 K. By applying magnetic field, the magnetic behavior variation reveals a complex magnetic structure. Above a critical field Bc a ferromagnetic (FM)-like character starts to prevail. AFM and FM regimes are separated by a metamagnetic region. Heat capacity measurements confirm this behavior.

We present a theoretical analysis of the magnetic phase diagram of CeTi$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$Ge and GdFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Si as a function of the temperature and the Sc and Co concentration $x$, respectively. CeScGe and GdCoSi, as many other RTX (R=rare earth, T=transition metal, X=p-block element) compounds, present a tetragonal crystal structure where bilayers of R are separated by layers of T and X. While GdFeSi and CeTi$_{0.75}$Sc$_{0.25}$Ge are ferromagnetic, CeScGe and GdCoSi order antiferromagnetically with the R 4f magnetic moments on the same bilayer aligned ferromagnetically and magnetic moments in nearest neighbouring bilayers aligned antiferromagnetically. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_N$ decreases with decreasing concentration $x$ in both compounds and for low enough values of $x$ the compounds show a ferromagnetic behavior. Based on these observations we construct a simplified model Hamiltonian that we solve numerically for the specific heat and the magnetization. We find a good qualitative agreement between the model and the experimental data. Our results show that the main magnetic effect of the Sc $\to$ Ti and Co $\to$ Fe substitution in these compounds is consistent with a change in the sign of the exchange coupling between magnetic moments in neighbouring bilayers. We expect a similar phenomenology for other magnetic RTX compounds with the same type of crystal structure.

Magnetic ($χ$), transport ($ρ$) and heat capacity ($C_m$)properties of CeIrSi are investigated to elucidate the effect of geometric frustration in this compound with trillium type structure because, notwithstanding its robust effective moment, $μ_{\rm eff}\approx 2.46μ_B$, this Ce-lattice compound does not undergo a magnetic transition. In spite of that it shows broad $C_m(T)/T$ and $χ(T)$ maxima centered at $T_{max}\approx 1.5$\,K, while a $ρ\propto T^2$ thermal dependence, characteristic of electronic spin coherent fluctuations, is observed below $T_{coh} \approx 2.5$\,K. Magnetic field does not affect significantly the position of the mentioned maxima up to $\approx 1$\,T, though $χ(T)$ shows an incipient structure that completely vanishes at $μ_0 H \approx 1$\,T. Concerning the $ρ\propto T^2$ dependence, it is practically not affected by magnetic field up to $μ_0 H = 9$\,T, with the residual resistivity $ρ_0(H)$ slightly decreasing and $T_{coh}(H)$ increasing. These results are compared with the physical properties observed in other frustrated intermetallic compounds

A very strong magnetoelastic effect in the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Si alloys is reported. The strength of the magnetostrictive effect can be tuned upon changing $x$. The moderate low-temperature linear magnetostriction observed at low Fe concentrations becomes very large ($\frac {ΔL}{L} \left(16 T,2 K\right) =$ 3$\times$10$^{-3}$) around the critical concentration ($x_c \approx$ 0.23) at which the long-range antiferromagnetic order vanishes. Upon increasing doping through the non-magnetic region ($x > x_c$), the magnetostriction strength gradually weakens again. Remarkably the low-temperature magnetostriction at the critical concentration shows a pronounced $S$-like shape (centered at $B_m \sim$ 6 T) resembling other well-known Ce-based metamagnetic systems like CeRu$_2$Si$_2$ and CeTiGe. Unlike what is observed in these compounds, however, the field dependence of the magnetization shows only a minor upturn around $B_m$ vaguely resembling a metamagnetic behavior. The subtle interplay between magnetic order and the Kondo screening seems to originate an enhanced valence susceptibility slightly changing the Ce ions valence, ultimately triggering the large magnetostriction observed around the critical concentration.

Shastry-Sutherland lattice was observed as alternative ground state in Rare Earth intermetallic with Mo$_2$B$_2$Fe and U$_2$Pt$_2$Sn anisotropic structures where magnetic frustration is favored. In the case of Ce$_2$Pd$_2$Sn, it was shown that such phase can be suppressed by the application of magnetic field and, in this work, its stability is studied as a function of the electronic concentration by doping the Sn(4+) lattice with In(3+) atoms. Magnetic and specific heat measurements show that around 50\% substitution the Shastry Sutherland lattice vanishes in a critical point. This result confirms the strong dependence of that phase on the electron density because a recent investigation on the Pd rich solid solution Ce$_{2+ε}$Pd$_{2-ε}$In$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$ (with $ε< 0$) demonstrates that atomic disorder dominates the phase diagram at intermediate Sn/In concentration inhibiting magnetic frustration effects. In the alloys investigated in this work, the $ε>0$ character stabilizes the ferromagnetic ground state all along the concentration, allowing the Shastry Sutherland lattice formation on the Sn rich side.

Two alternative potential applications are recognized, like those requiring fixed temperature reference points to be reached applying low intensity magnetic fields and those requiring controlled thermal drift for temperature dependent studies. Different thermomagnetic entropy S(T,B) trajectories were identified depending on respective specific heat behaviors at very low temperature. To gain insight into the criteria to be used for a proper choice of suitable materials in respective applications, some simple relationships are proposed to facilitate a comparative description of their magnetocaloric behavior, including the referent Cerium-Magnesium-Nitride (CMN) salt in these comparisons

The compound retains the P4/mbm throughout the magnetic transition, although the magnetic ordering is accompanied by a significant decrease of the lattice strain along [00l], suggesting a magnetostructural contribution. The magnetic behaviour of Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2In is very different; this compound exhibits an extremely reduced magnetic scattering contribution in the diffraction pattern, that can be ascribed to a different kind of ferromagnetic ordering, with extremely reduced magnetic moments (~ 0.1 mB) aligned along [0l0]. These results point to a competition between different types of magnetic correlations induced by Ag-substitution, giving rise to a magnetically frustrated scenario in Ce2(Pd0.5Ag0.5)2In.

The physical properties of the very heavy fermion YbCu$_4$Ni were characterized through structural, magnetic, thermal and transport studies along nearly four decades of temperature ranging between 50 milikelvin and 300 K. At high temperature, the crystal electric field levels splitting was determined with $Δ_1 (Γ_6)= 85$ K and $Δ_2 (Γ_8) \approx 200$ K, the latter being a quartet in this cubic symmetry. An effective magnetic moment $μ_{eff} \approx 3μ_B$ is evaluated for the $Γ_7$ ground state, while at high temperature the value for a Yb$^{3+}$ ion is observed. At low temperature this compounds shows the typical behavior of a magnetically frustrated system undergoing a change of regime at a characteristic temperature $T^*\approx 200$ mK into a sort of Fermi-liquid type 'plateau'of the specific heat: $C_m/T|_{T\to 0}$ = const. The change in the temperature dependence of the specific heat coincides with a maximum and a discontinuity in respective inductive and dissipative components of the ac-susceptibility. More details from the nature of this ground state are revealed by the specific heat behavior under applied magnetic field.

Using a Landau functional we provide a qualitative description of the thermal expansion, magnetostriction, magnetization and specific heat data. We show that the available experimental results [Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 28 346003 (2016)] are consistent with the presence of a structural transition at $T_s\gtrsim T_N$ and a strong magnetoelastic coupling. The magnetoelastic coupling presents a Janus-faced effect: while the structural transition is shifted to higher temperatures as the magnetic field is increased, the resulting striction at low temperatures decreases. The strong magnetoelastic coupling and the proximity of the structural transition to the onset temperature for magnetic fluctuations, suggest that the transition could be an analogue of the tetragonal to orthorhombic observed in Fe-based pcnictides.

We report on synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties of the new compound YbPd$_2$In, crystallizing as a Heusler structure type. A trivalent state of the rare earth was determined by fitting the magnetic susceptibility with a Curie-Weiss law. This compound is characterized by showing very weak magnetic interactions and a negligible Kondo effect. A specific heat jump was observed at $T\approx 250$ mK, followed at higher temperature by a power law decrease of $C_P(T)/T$. The resulting large electronic entropy increase at very low temperature is rapidly shifted to higher temperature by the application of magnetic field. This magnetocaloric effect places YbPd$_2$In as a very good candidate for adiabatic demagnetization cooling processes.

A systematic modification of the entropy trajectory $S_m(T)$ is observed at very low temperature in magnetically frustrated systems as a consequence of the constraint $S_m\geq 0$ imposed by the third law of thermodynamics. The lack of magnetic order allows to explore some unusual thermodynamic properties by tracing the physical behavior of real systems. The most relevant findings are: i) a common $C_m/T|_{T\to 0} \approx 7$\,J/molK$^2$ 'plateau' in at least five Yb-based very-heavy-fermions VHF compounds; ii) quantitative and qualitative differences between VHF and standard non-Fermi-liquids. iii) Entropy-bottlenecks governing the change of $S_m(T)$ trajectories in a continuous transition into alternative ground states that exhibits third order characteristics. An empirical analysis of the possible $S_m(T\to 0)$ dependencies according to the $\partial ^2 S_m/\partial T^2$ derivative is also preformed. Altogether, this work can be regarded as an empirical application of the third law of thermodynamics.

We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of CeCo$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$Si under high magnetic fields (up to 16 Tesla) measuring different physical properties such as specific heat, magnetization, electrical resistivity, thermal expansion and magnetostriction. CeCo$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$Si becomes antiferromagnetic at $T_N \approx$ 6.7 K. However, a broad tail (onset at $T_X \approx$ 13 K) in the specific heat precedes that second order transition. This tail is also observed in the temperature derivative of the resistivity. However, it is particularly noticeable in the thermal expansion coefficient where it takes the form of a large bump centered at $T_X$. A high magnetic field practically washes out that tail in the resistivity. But surprisingly, the bump in the thermal expansion becomes a well pronounced peak fully split from the magnetic transition at $T_N$. Concurrently, the magnetoresistance also switches from negative to positive just below $T_X$. The magnetostriction is considerable and irreversible at low temperature ($\frac {ΔL}{L} \left(16 T\right) \sim$ 4$\times$10$^{-4}$ at 2 K) when the magnetic interactions dominate. A broad jump in the field dependence of the magnetostriction observed at low $T$ may be the signature of a weak ongoing metamagnetic transition. Taking altogether, the results indicate the importance of the lattice effects in the development of the magnetic order in these alloys.

The increase of band electrons produced by Pd/Ag substitution depresses T_C(x) from 4.1K down to T_C(x=0.5)=1.1K, with a QCP extrapolated to x_{QCP}~ 0.6. Magnetic susceptibility from T>30K indicates an effective moment slightly decreasing from μ_{eff}=2.56μ_B to 2.4μ_B at x=0.5. These values and the paramagnetic temperature θ_P~ -10K exclude significant Kondo screening effects. The T_C(x) reduction is accompanied by a weakening of the FM magnetization and the emergence of a specific heat C_m(T) anomaly at T*~ 1K, without signs of magnetism detected from AC-susceptibility. The magnetic entropy collected around 4K (i.e. the T_C of the x=0 sample) practically does not change with Ag concentration: S_m(4K)~ 0.8 Rln2, suggesting a progressive transfer of FM degrees of freedom to the non-magnetic (NM) component. No antecedent was found concerning any NM anomaly emerging from a FM system at such temperature. The origin of this anomaly is attributed to an 'entropy bottleneck' originated in the nearly divergent power law dependence for T>T*.

The highest antiferromagnetic (AFM) temperature in Ce based compounds has been reported for CeScGe with Tn=47K, but its local or itinerant nature was not deeply investigated yet. In order to shed more light into this unusually high ordering temperature we have investigated structural, magnetic, transport and thermal properties of CeTi{1-x}Sc{x}Ge alloys within the range of stability of the CeScSi-type structure: 0.25<x<1. Along this concentration range, this strongly anisotropic system presents a complex magnetic phase diagram with a continuous modification of its magnetic behavior, from ferromagnetism (FM)for 0.25<x<0.50 (with 7K<Tc<16K) to AFM for 0.60<x<1 (with 19K<Tn<47K). The onset of the AFM phase is associated to a metamagnetic transition with a critical field increasing from H{cr}=0 at x~0.55 to ~6Tesla at x=1, coincident with an increasing contribution of the first excited crystal electric field doublet. At a critical point x{cr}=0.65 a second transition appears at Tl<Tn. In contrast to observations in itinerant systems like CeRh{2}Si{2} or CeRh{3}B{2}, no evidences for significant hybridization of the 4f electrons at large Sc contents were found. Therefore, the exceptionally large Tn of CeScGe can be attributed to an increasing RKKY inter-layer interaction as Sc content grows.

Structural, magnetic (M) and thermal (C_m) studies on Ce_2(Ni_{1-y}Pd_y)_2Sn alloys are presented within the 0<y<0.55 range of concentration, showing evidences for itinerant to local electronic transformation. At variance with RKKY type interactions between localized moments μ_{eff}, the substitution of Ni by isoelectronic Pd leads the antiferromagnetic transition to decrease from T_N~3.8K to ~1.2K between y=0 and 0.48, while M(H) measured at H=5Tesla and 1.8K rises from 0.12 up to 0.75μ_B/Ce-at. Furthermore, the C_m(T_N) jump increases with concentration whereas |θ_P| decreases. The magnetic entropy S_m(T) grows moderately with temperature for y=0 due to a significant contribution of excited levels at low energy, while at y=0.5 it shows a incipient plateau around S_m=Rln2. All these features reflect the progressive ground state transformation of from itinerant to a local character. Another peculiarity of this system is the nearly constant value of C_m(T_N) that ends in an "entropy bottleneck" as T_N decreases. Consequently, the system shows a critical point at y_{cr}~0.48 with signs of ferromagnetic behavior above H_{cr}~0.3T. A splitting of the C_m(T_N) maximum, tuned by field and concentration, indicates a competition between two magnetic phases, with respective peaks at T_N~1.2K and T_I~1.45K.

One of them is related to the rare cases of Ce binary compounds formed in BCC structures, with a quartet ground state, whose degeneracy is reduced by undergoing different types of transitions mostly structural. The other group shows evidences of itinerant character with the outstanding example of CeRh_3B_2 showing the highest T_ord=115K. The second highest ordering temperature has been reported for CeScGe with T_ord=47K, but the nature of this magnetic state has not been investigated very deeply. In order to shed more light into this unusual high temperature ordering we studied the structural, magnetic, transport and thermal properties of CeTi_1-xSc_xGe alloys in the stability range of the CeScSi-type structure 0.25<x<1 This system presents a rich variety of magnetic behaviors along this concentration range, with the magnetic ordering growing from ferromagnetic (FM) T_C~7K up to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at T_N=47K. The different regions show the following characteristics: i) on the Ti rich side (0.25<x<0.50) it exhibits a FM ground state (GS) with large saturation magnetization values M_sat up to ~1.15 mu_B. ii) Around x=0.60, the first crystal electric field excited doublet starts to contribute to the GS magnetic properties. Furthermore an AFM component with a connected metamagnetic transition appears. iii) At x=0.65 a clear change in the GS nature is associated to a critical point above which the GS properties can be described like for an itinerant system (with decreasing M_sat) and an effective GS degeneracy N_eff=4. iv) For x>0.65, the magnetic phase boundary splits into two transitions, with an intermediate phase presenting incommensurate spin density waves features.

We present a simple approach to calculate the thermodynamic properties of single Kondo impurities including orbital degeneracy and crystal field effects (CFE) by extending a previous proposal by K. Comparison with exact solutions for the specific heat of a quartet ground state split into two doublets shows deviations below $10\%$ in absence of CFE and a quantitative agreement for moderate or large CFE. As an application, we fit the measured specific heat of the compounds CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, CePd$_{3}$Si$_{0.3}$, CePdAl, CePt, Yb$_2$Pd$_2$Sn and YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$. The agreement between theory and experiment is very good or excellent depending on the compound, except at very low temperatures due to the presence of magnetic correlations (not accounted in the model).

II) with phase boundaries ending at a finite temperature Critical Point because their Cm(T_ord) jumps (ΔC_m) do not decrease sufficiently with T_ord producing a S_MO bottleneck, and III) those showing a transference of degrees of freedom to a non-magnetic heavy fermion (HF) component, with their ΔC_m vanishing at T >> 0. There is also a IV) group of Ce HF fermions which do not order magnetically because they are tuned at T_ord = 0. These compounds are at the top of the lim(T=>0) of δS_m/δT = γ. values because they collect the highest density of low energy excitations. From the analysis of Cm(T)=T and S_m(T) results performed on these selected Ce ternaries, a quantitative determination of an upper limit for the density of excitations is obtained, excluding any evidence of C_m(T)/T divergency at T => 0 in agreement with thermodynamic laws.

A systematic analysis of low temperature magnetic phase diagrams of Ce compounds is performed in order to recognize the thermodynamic conditions to be fulfilled by those systems to reach a quantum critical regime and, alternatively, to identify other kinds of low temperature behaviors. Based on specific heat ($C_m$) and entropy ($S_m$) results, three different types of phase diagrams are recognized: i) with the entropy involved into the ordered phase ($S_{MO}$) decreasing proportionally to the ordering temperature ($T_{MO}$), ii) those showing a transference of degrees of freedom from the ordered phase to a non-magnetic component, with their $C_m(T_{MO})$ jump ($ΔC_m$) vanishing at finite temperature, and iii) those ending in a critical point at finite temperature because their $ΔC_m$ do not decrease with $T_{MO}$ producing an entropy accumulation at low temperature.
Only those systems belonging to the first case, i.e. with $S_{MO}\to 0$ as $T_{MO}\to 0$, can be regarded as candidates for quantum critical behavior. Their magnetic phase boundaries deviate from the classical negative curvature below $T\approx 2.5$\,K, denouncing frequent misleading extrapolations down to T=0. Different characteristic concentrations are recognized and analyzed for Ce-ligand alloyed systems. Particularly, a pre-critical region is identified, where the nature of the magnetic transition undergoes significant modifications, with its $\partial C_m/\partial T$ discontinuity strongly affected by magnetic field and showing an increasing remnant entropy at $T\to 0$. Physical constraints arising from the third law at $T\to 0$ are discussed and recognized from experimental results.

The $T_N(x)$ phase boundary decrease is due to an incipient Kondo screening of the Ce-4f moments and local atomic disorder in the alloy. Both mechanisms affect the formation of Ce-magnetic dimers on which the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) builds up. On the contrary, the $T_C(x)$ transition to the ferromagnetic ground state increases as a consequence of the weakening of the AF-SSL phase. Applied magnetic field also suppresses the AF phase like in the stoichiometric compound.

A systematic analysis of thermodynamic properties performed on Ce-base exemplary compounds allows to identify different types of behaviors as the system approaches the quantum critical region. They are recognized in the respective magnetic phase boundaries (T_{N,C}(x)) as a change from the classical negative curvature to a linear composition ($x$) dependence, the occurrence of a critical point or the evanescence at finite temperature under pressure at finite temperature. In the first case, an anomalous reduction of the entropy S_m respect to the S_m = RLn2 value (expected for the usual Ce-magnetic doublet ground state) is observed around x_{cr}, and analyzed taking profit of detailed studies performed on CeIn_{3-x}Sn_x alloys. As expected from Maxwell relations, the volume variation V_0(x) at T=>0 also shows a non-monotonous behavior around x_{cr}.
Different regimes in the entropy variation of the ordered phase (S_{MO}) are recognized. Only in the former case S_{MO}=> 0 continuously as T_{N,C}=>0, whereas in the second S_{MO}(x,B) remains constant till a first order transition occurs. In the third case, the degrees of freedom of the MO phase are progressively transferred to the heavy fermion component as indicated by the decreasing C_m(T_N) jump which vanishes at finite temperature.

Low temperature magnetic and thermal (C_m) properties of the ferromagnetic (FM) alloys Ce_2.15 (Pd_1-x Rh_x)_1.95 In_0.9 were investigated in order to explore the possibility for tuning a quantum critical point (QCP) by doping Pd with Rh. As expected, the magnetic transition observed at T = 4.1K in the parent alloy decreases with increasing Rh concentration. Nevertheless it splits into two transitions, the upper being antiferromagnetic (AF) whereas the lower FM. The AF phase boundary extrapolates to T_N = 0 for x_cr ~ 0.65 whereas the first order FM transition vanishes at x ~ 0.3. The QC character of the T_N => 0 point arises from the divergent T dependence of the tail of C_m/T observed in the x = 0.5 and 0.55 alloys, and the tendency to saturation of the maximum of C_m(T_N)/T as observed in exemplary Ce compounds for T_N => 0. Beyond the critical concentration the unit cell volume deviates from the Vegard's law in coincidence with a strong increase of the Kondo temperature.

The substitution of Pd atoms by isoelectronic Ni leads to a change in the crystallographic structure from tetragonal (for $x \leq 0.3$) to centered orthorhombic lattice (for $x \geq 0.4$). The volume contraction thorough the series is comparable to the expected from the atomic size ratio between transition metal components. The consequent weak increase of the Kondo temperature drives the two transitions observed in Ce$_2$Pd$_2$Sn to merge at $x = 0.25$. After about a 1% of volume collapse at the structural modification, the system behaves as a weakly magnetic heavy fermion with an enhanced degenerate ground state. Notably, an incipient magnetic transition arises on the Ni-rich size. This unexpected behavior is discussed in terms of an enhancement of the density of states driven by the increase of the $4f$-conduction band hybridization and the incipient contribution of the first excited crystal field doublet on the ground state properties.

The stability of a Shastry-Sutherland ShSu phase as a function of electron concentration is investigated through the field dependence of thermal and magnetic properties of the solid solution Ce_{2-x}Pd_{2+y}In_{1-z} in the antiferromagnetic branch. In these alloys the electronic (holes) variation is realized by increasing $Pd$ concentration. The AF transition T_M decreases from 3.5K to 2.8K as $Pd$ concentration increases from y=0.2 to y=0.4. By applying magnetic field, the ShSu phase is suppressed once the field induced ferromagnetic polarization takes over at a critical field B_{cr} which increases with $Pd$ content. A detailed analysis around the critical point reveals a structure in the maximum of the dM/dB derivative, which is related with incipient steps in the magnetization M(B) as predicted by the theory for the ShSu lattice. The crossing of M(B) isotherms, observed in ShSu prototype compounds, is also analyzed. The effect of $In$ substitution by $Pd$ is interpreted as an increase of the number of 'holes' in the conduction band and results in a unique parameter able to describe the variation of the magnetic properties along the studied range of concentration.

According to literature, two transitions were observed at $T_M=4.8$K and $T_C =2.1$K respectively. The upper transition cannot be considered as a standard anti-ferromagnetic because of frustration effects in a triangular network of Ce-atoms and the positive sign of the paramagnetic temperature $θ_P^{LT} = 4.4$K. The nature of the this intermediated phase is described accounting for the formation of ferromagnetic (F) Ce-dimers disposed in a quasi-2D square lattice, resembling a Shastry-Sutherland pattern. According to hysteretic features in $ρ(T)$ and $χ_{ac}(T)$, the lower F-transition is of first order, with $C_P(T<T_C)$ revealing a gap of anisotropy $E_g\approx 7$K.

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) have been studied extensively in correlated electron systems. Characterization of magnetism at QPTs has, however, been limited by the volume-integrated feature of neutron and magnetization measurements and by pressure uncertainties in NMR studies using powderized specimens. Overcoming these limitations, we performed muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements which have a unique sensitivity to volume fractions of magnetically ordered and paramagnetic regions, and studied QPTs from itinerant heli/ferro magnet to paramagnet in MnSi (single-crystal; varying pressure) and (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)RuO$_{3}$ (ceramic specimens; varying $x$). Our results provide the first clear evidence that both cases are associated with spontaneous phase separation and suppression of dynamic critical behavior, revealed a slow but dynamic character of the ``partial order'' diffuse spin correlations in MnSi above the critical pressure, and, combined with other known results in heavy-fermion and cuprate systems, suggest a possibility that a majority of QPTs involve first-order transitions and/or phase separation.

This system represents the first example for a {\it cubic} heavy fermion (HF) in which $T_{\rm N}$ can be suppressed {\it continuously} down to T=0. A characteristic sign change of the Grüneisen parameter between the AF and paramagnetic state indicates the accumulation of entropy close to the QCP. The observed quantum critical behavior is compatible with the predictions of the itinerant theory for three-dimensional critical spinfluctuations. This has important implications for the role of the dimensionality in HF QCPs.

CePd_1-xRh_x alloys exhibit a continuous evolution from ferromagnetism (T_C= 6.5 K) at x = 0 to a mixed valence (MV) state at x = 1. We have performed a detailed investigation on the suppression of the ferromagnetic (F) phase in this alloy using dc-(χ_dc) and ac-susceptibility (χ_ac), specific heat (C_m), resistivity (ρ) and thermal expansion (β) techniques. Our results show a continuous decrease of T_C (x) with negative curvature down to T_C = 3K at x*= 0.65, where a positive curvature takes over. Beyond x*, a cusp in cac is traced down to T_C* = 25 mK at x = 0.87, locating the critical concentration between x = 0.87 and 0.90. The quantum criticality of this region is recognized by the -log(T/T_0) dependence of C_m/T, which transforms into a T^-q (~0.5) one at x = 0.87. At high temperature, this system shows the onset of valence instability revealed by a deviation from Vegard's law (at x_V~0.75) and increasing hybridization effects on high temperature χ_dc and ρ. Coincidentally, a Fermi liquid contribution to the specific heat arises from the MV component, which becomes dominant at the CeRh limit. In contrast to antiferromagnetic systems, no C_m/T flattening is observed for x > x_cr rather the mentioned power law divergence, which coincides with a change of sign of β. The coexistence of F and MV components and the sudden changes in the T dependencies are discussed in the context of randomly distributed magnetic and Kondo couplings.

Thermal, magnetic and transport measurements are reported on CePd_{2-x}Ni_xAl_3 in the 0<= x <= 1 range, including the effect of pressure (p) and magnetic field on some selected samples. The low temperature results indicate that long range antiferromagnetic order is stable up to x=0.2, while between 0.25 and 0.5 magnetic disorder gives rise to non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior. In this region, the low temperature specific heat can be described by the sum of two components, the major one showing a C_P/T=gamma_0 -gamma_1 T^(1/2) dependence, while the minor one includes a decreasing number of degrees of freedom related to a residue of short range order. The latter extrapolates to zero between 0.45<x_{cr}<0.5. Electrical resistivity (rho) studies performed under pressure for x=0.5 allow to investigate the evolution of the NFL state right above the critical point, where the exponent of rho ~ T^n is found to increase from n=1 (for p=0) up to n=2 (for p=12 kbar). The latter is observed for x=1.0 already at normal pressure, indicating the onset of the Fermi Liquid behavior. Doping and pressure effects are compared by fitting high temperature resistivity data employing a unique function which allows to describe the evolution of the characteristic energy of this series through a large range of concentration and pressure.

Our data reveal single-ion scaling with the Ce-concentration and the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat c/T approximately 5.5 J K^(-2)mol^(-1) at T=0.08K for the stoichiometric compound x=0 without any trace of magnetic order. While in the doped samples c/T increases logarithmically below 3K down to 50mK, their magnetic susceptibility behaves Fermi liquid like below 1K. These properties make the compound Ce_(1-x)La_xNi_9Ge_4 a unique system on the borderline between Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid physics.

Abstract:
In this paper we report a comprehensive study of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), resistivity (ρ), and specific heat (C_P), down to 0.5 K of the cubic CeIn_(3-x)Sn_x alloy. The ground state of this system evolves from antiferromagnetic (AF) in CeIn_3(T_N=10.2 K) to intermediate-valent in CeSn_3, and represents the first example of a Ce-lattice cubic non-Fermi liquid (NFL) system where T_N(x) can…

In this paper we report a comprehensive study of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), resistivity (ρ), and specific heat (C_P), down to 0.5 K of the cubic CeIn_(3-x)Sn_x alloy. The ground state of this system evolves from antiferromagnetic (AF) in CeIn_3(T_N=10.2 K) to intermediate-valent in CeSn_3, and represents the first example of a Ce-lattice cubic non-Fermi liquid (NFL) system where T_N(x) can be traced down to T=0 over more than a decade of temperature. Our results indicate that the disappearance of the AF state occurs near x_c ~ 0.7, although already at x ~ 0.4 significant modifications of the magnetic ground state are observed. Between these concentrations, clear NFL signatures are observed, such as ρ(T)\approx ρ_0 + A T^n (with n<1.5) and C_P(T)\propto -T ln(T) dependencies. Within the ordered phase a first order phase transition occurs for 0.25 < x < 0.5. With larger Sn doping, different weak ρ(T) dependencies are observed at low temperatures between x=1 and x=3 while C_P/T shows only a weak temperature dependence.

We present electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements of alloys on the Rh rich side of the phase diagram of the Ce(Rh$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_2$Si$_2$ system and compare the results with those obtained at intermediate and low Rh concentrations. The analysis of the x-evolution of the entropy and the scaling behaviour of $C_{el}(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ clearly confirm a separation of the magnetic phase diagram into two regions. The region $x\le0.3$, showing a concentration independent characteristic temperature $T_o\approx45 {\rm K}$, while for $x>0.3$ $T_o$ decreases down to $T_o(x=1)\approx15 {\rm K}$. This characteristic temperature is obtained by scaling the $C_{el}(T,x>0.3)$ results as a function of the reduced temperature $T/T_o$. At low Pd-content, $T_N$ decreases very rapidly from $T_N = 36 {\rm K}$ in pure CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ to $T_N=18 {\rm K}$ at x=0.1. With higher Pd concentration it stabilized at $T_N\approx15 {\rm K}$ whereas the magnitude of the anomalies in $C_{el}(T)$ and in the susceptibility around $T_N$ are further reduced and disappear at $x\approx0.3$. This is in contrast to the behavior found on the Pd-rich side, where $T_N$ decreases continuously to zero with increasing Rh content. The pronounced differences observed between both phase boundaries and the drastic effect of doping on the Rh rich side suggest an itinerant character in CeRh$_2$ Si$_2$, in contrast to the localized character of CePd$_2$Si$_2$. A further evidence for the itinerant character in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ is given by the $ρ(T)$ dependence observed for $x\le0.3$, which scales with $ρ(T)$ of the prototype itinerant compound YCo$_2$.
