VBr$_3$ is a van der Waals antiferromagnet below the Néel temperature of 26.5 K with a saturation moment of 1.2 mB/f.u. above the metamagnetic transitions detected in the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. To reveal the AFM structure of VBr$_3$ experimentally, we performed a single-crystal neutron diffraction study on a large high-quality crystal. The collected data confirmed a slight monoclinic distortion of the high-temperature rhombohedral structure below 90 K. The magnetic structure was, nevertheless, investigated within the R-3 model. The antiferromagnetic structure propagation vector k = (1, 0, 0.5) was revealed. In an attempt to determine the magnetic structure, 72 non-equivalent magnetic reflections were recorded. The experimental data were confronted with the magnetic space groups dictated by the R-3 lattice symmetry and propagation vector. The best agreement between the experimental data and the magnetic structure model was obtained for the space group P-1.1'_c. The magnetic unit cell of the proposed unique antiferromagnetic structure with periodicity 6c is built from two identical triple layers antiferromagnetically coupled along the c axis. Each triple layer comprises a Néel antiferromagnetic monolayer sandwiched between two antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic monolayers.

Based on the earlier published theory (\textit{Nature Mat}. \textbf{18}, 223--228 (2019)), a comprehensive experimental investigation of multiferroic quantum critical behavior of (Eu,Ba,Sr)TiO$_3$ polycrystalline and single crystal samples was performed. Presence of the displacive ferroelectric quantum criticality is revealed through non-classical ($T^2$) temperature scaling of inverse dielectric susceptibility up to 60\,K. With increasing hydrostatic pressure, this ferroelectric quantum criticality is gradually suppressed. Inverse magnetic susceptibility follows classical Curie-Weiss law down to 4 K, but quantum fluctuations belonging to an antiferromagnetic phase transition ($T_{\mathrm{N}} < 0.8$ K) change its scaling below 3 K to $T^{(1.7\pm 0.1)}$ and $T^{(2.1\pm 0.2)}$ for samples containing 29\,\% and 25\,\% of Eu$^{2+}$ ions, respectively. Experimental indications of the coexisting ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic, i.e. multiferroic, quantum fluctuations and qualitative explanation why they could be seen only in the immediate proximity of $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ is given.

CrI$_3$ represents one of the most important van der Waals systems on the route to understanding two-dimensional magnetic phenomena. Being arranged in a specific layered structure it also provides a unique opportunity to investigate structural transformations in dimension-confined systems. CrI$_3$ is dimorphic and possesses a higher symmetry low-temperature phase, which is quite uncommon. It contrasts with vanadium trihalides which show a higher symmetry high-temperature. An explanation of this distinct behavior together with a large cycle-dependent transition hysteresis is still an open question. Our low-temperature X-ray diffraction study conducted on CrI$_3$ single crystals complemented by magnetization and specific heat measurements was focused mainly on specific features of the structural transition during cooling. Our results manifest that the structural transition during cooling relates to the formation of structural domains despite the lower symmetry structure transforming to a higher symmetry one. We propose that these domains could control the transition temperature and also the size of thermal hysteresis.

The first-order transition line in the \textit{H-T} phase diagram of itinerant electron metamagnets terminates at the critical end point-analogous to the critical point on the gas-liquid condensation line in the \textit{p-T} phase diagram. To unravel the impact of critical magnetic fluctuations on the crystal lattice of a metamagnet at the critical end point, we performed an ultrasonic study of the itinerant electron metamagnet UTe$_2$ across varying temperatures and magnetic fields. At temperatures exceeding 9 K, a distinct V-shaped anomaly emerges, precisely centered at the critical field of the metamagnetic transition in the isothermal field dependence of elastic constants. This anomaly arises from lattice instability, triggered by critical magnetic fluctuations via strong magnetoelastic interactions. Remarkably, this effect is maximized precisely at the critical-end-point temperature. Comparative measurements of another itinerant metamagnet, UCoAl, reveal intriguing commonalities. Despite significant differences in the paramagnetic ground state, lattice symmetry, and the expected metamagnetic transition process between UTe$_2$ and UCoAl, both exhibit similar anomalies in elastic properties near the critical end point. These shared aspects may hold universality for other itinerant electron metamagnets.

It has recently been reported that UTe$_2$ possesses a 3D Fermi surface component [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 036501 (2023)]. The distinction between 2D and 3D Fermi surface sections in triplet superconductors can have important implications regarding the topological properties of the superconductivity. Here we report the observation of oscillatory components in the magnetoconductance of UTe$_2$ at high magnetic fields. We find that these oscillations are well described by quantum interference between quasiparticles traversing semiclassical trajectories spanning magnetic breakdown networks. Our observations are consistent with a quasi-2D model of this material's Fermi surface based on prior dHvA-effect measurements. Our results strongly indicate that UTe$_2$ -- which exhibits a multitude of complex physical phenomena -- possesses a remarkably simple Fermi surface consisting exclusively of two quasi-2D cylindrical sections.

The unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits numerous signatures of spin-triplet superconductivity -- a rare state of matter which could enable quantum computation protected against decoherence. UTe$_2$ possesses a complex phase landscape comprising two magnetic field-induced superconducting phases, a metamagnetic transition to a field-polarised state, along with pair- and charge-density wave orders. However, contradictory reports between studies performed on UTe$_2$ specimens of varying quality have severely impeded theoretical efforts to understand the microscopic origins of the exotic superconductivity. Here, we report a comprehensive suite of high magnetic field measurements on a new generation of pristine quality UTe$_2$ crystals. Our experiments reveal a significantly revised high magnetic field superconducting phase diagram in the ultraclean limit, showing a pronounced sensitivity of field-induced superconductivity to the presence of crystalline disorder. We employ a Ginzburg-Landau model that excellently captures this acute dependence on sample quality. Our results suggest that in close proximity to a field--induced metamagnetic transition the enhanced role of magnetic fluctuations -- that are strongly suppressed by disorder -- is likely responsible for tuning UTe$_2$ between two distinct spin-triplet superconducting phases.

We studied magnetic states and phase transitions in the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr3 by specific heat and magnetization measurements of single crystals in high magnetic fields and by ab initio density functional theory calculations focused on exchange interactions. The magnetization behavior resembles Ising antiferromagnets with magnetic moments kept in the out-of-plane direction by strong uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The out-of-plane magnetic field induces a spin-flip metamagnetic transition, which is of first-order type at low temperatures while at higher temperatures the transition becomes continuous. The first-order and continuous transition segments in the field-temperature phase diagram meet at a tricritical point at = 12 K. The magnetization response to the in-plane field manifests a continuous spin-flop transition, which at 2 K terminates at a field mu0Hc = 27 T that can serve as an estimate of the anisotropy field in VBr3. The magnetization curves above the metamagnetic transition saturate at the same value of magnetic moment musat = 1.2 muB/f.u., which is much smaller than the spin-only (S = 1) moment of the V3+ ion. The reduced moment can be explained by the existence of a significant orbital magnetic moment antiparallel to the spin. The orbital moment is a key ingredient of a mechanism responsible for the observed large anisotropy. The exact energy evaluation of possible magnetic orders unambiguously shows that the magnetic ground state of VBr3 is the intralayer zigzag antiferromagnetic order that renders the antiferromagnetic ground state significantly more stable against the spin-flip transition than the other options. The calculations also predict that a minimal distortion of the Br ion sublattice causes a radical change of the orbital occupation in the ground state, connected with the formation of the orbital moment and the stability of magnetic order.

The heavy fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ exhibits numerous characteristics of spin-triplet superconductivity. Efforts to understand the microscopic details of this exotic superconductivity have been impeded by uncertainty regarding the underlying electronic structure. Here we directly probe the Fermi surface of UTe$_2$ by measuring magnetic quantum oscillations in pristine quality crystals. We find an angular profile of quantum oscillatory frequency and amplitude that is characteristic of a quasi-2D Fermi surface, which we find is well described by two cylindrical Fermi sheets of electron- and hole-type respectively. Additionally, we find that both cylindrical Fermi sheets possess considerable undulation but negligible small-scale corrugation, which may allow for their near-nesting and therefore promote magnetic fluctuations that enhance the triplet pairing mechanism. Importantly, we find no evidence for the presence of any 3D Fermi surface sections. Our results place strong constraints on the possible symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in UTe$_2$.

We report on single crystal growth of laser material Nd:YAG widely used in the applications by innovative crucible-free floating zone method implemented in an advanced laser optical furnace. We have optimized the parameters for the production of high-quality single crystals of the size typical for laser tubes. To reduce the strain and improve machinability, we have developed an afterheater to thermalize the grown part of a single crystal below the hot zone, which is a technique unavailable in common mirror furnaces. The high quality of the single crystals was verified by Laue diffraction and the internal strain was documented by neutron diffraction. The absorption spectrum corresponds with the parameters of the commercially used material produced by Czochralski method. The presented methodology for the single crystal growth by floating zone method with laser heating is applicable for the preparation of other high-quality single crystals of oxide-based materials, particularly in an oxidizing environment unattainable in commonly used crucible methods.

The existence of the V3+ ion orbital moment is the open issue of the nature of magnetism in the van der Waals ferromagnet VI3. The huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy in conjunction with the significantly reduced ordered magnetic moment compared to the spin-only value provides strong but indirect evidence of a significant V orbital moment. We used the unique capability of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism to determine the orbital component of the total magnetic moment and provide for the first time a direct proof of an exceptionally sizable orbital moment of the V3+ ion in VI3. Our ligand field multiplet simulations of the XMCD spectra in synergy with the results of DFT calculations agree with the existence of two V sites with different orbital occupations and therefore different OM magnitudes in the ground state.

We use the synergy of infrared, terahertz, and Raman spectroscopies with DFT calculations to shed light on the magnetic and lattice properties of VI3. The structural transition at TS1 = 79 K is accompanied by a large splitting of polar phonon modes. Below TS1, strong ferromagnetic fluctuations are observed. The variations of phonon frequencies at 55 K induced by magnetoelastic coupling enhanced by spin-orbit interaction indicate the proximity of long-range ferromagnetic order. Below TC = 50 K, two Raman modes simultaneously appear and show dramatic softening in the narrow interval around the temperature TS2 of the second structural transition associated with the order-order magnetic phase transition. Below TS2, a magnon in the THz range appears in Raman spectra. The THz magnon observed in VI3 indicates the application potential of 2D van der Waals ferromagnets in ultrafast THz spintronics, which has previously been considered an exclusive domain of antiferromagnets.

We grew high-quality single crystals of the 5f electron van der Waals compound UI$_3$ and investigated them by measurements of specific heat and magnetization as functions of temperature and magnetic field. UI$_3$ behaves as an antiferromagnet with a first-order magnetic phase transition at the Neél temperature $T_N$ = 2.65 K. It is characterized by a sharp symmetric specific-heat peak which is gradually shifted to lower temperatures by increasing magnetic field applied along either the a- or b-axis. The behavior in magnetic fields reveals orthorhombic magnetocrystalline anisotropy with the hard magnetization direction along the c-axis. The 2-K a- and b-axis magnetization curves exhibit a metamagnetic transition at the critical field $H_c$ = 3 T and 1.8 T, respectively. In higher fields, when the long-range antiferromagnetism is suppressed by a metamagnetic transition, signs of short-range magnetic ordering of antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state show up both in specific heat and magnetization. The anomalous S-shape field dependence of a-axis magnetization well above $H_c$ can be understood as the crossover from the correlated paramagnetic regime to the high-field polarized paramagnet. The magnetic phase diagrams for the magnetic field applied along the a- and b-axis, respectively, designed using the mentioned experimental results are presented. We have also found that the UI$_3$ crystals are easily cleavable which predisposes this material for direct investigation of 5f electron magnetism in the 2D limit on exfoliated atomically thin samples.

Elastic constants, thermal expansion, magnetostriction and heat capacity measurements were performed with and without applied magnetic field on a single crystal of UIrSi$_3$. The elastic properties were interpreted within the theory of the strain-exchange effect. The exchange-striction model together with the Ising model for the behavior of magnetic localized 5$f$ electrons and itinerant electrons of uranium correctly reproduces the main features of our magneto-acoustic experiments in UIrSi$_3$. Data on thermal expansion and magnetostriction confirm the conclusion that the dominant contribution of the measured temperature and field change in the speed of sound comes from the change in the elastic modulus itself. Based on the analysis of heat capacity measurements in the magnetic field, we explain the significant anomalies at the second-order branch of the phase transition boundary as a manifestation of the tricritical fluctuations, dominating the region below the tricritical point. The outcome confirms the 3D Ising model, at zero and low magnetic fields, with a crossover to the mean-field tricritical behavior at fields close to the tricritical point, where tricritical fluctuations dominate the temperature evolution of the given property.

The band structure and Fermi surfaces of ThPd$_2$Al$_3$ were obtained by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and the results were well-explained by the band-structure calculation based on the local density approximation. The comparison between the ARPES spectra and the band-structure calculation suggests that the Fermi surface of ThPd$_2$Al$_3$ mainly consists of the Al $3p$ and Th $6d$ states with a minor contribution from the Pd $4d$ states. The comparison of the band structures between ThPd$_2$Al$_3$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$ argues that the U $5f$ states form Fermi surfaces in UPd$_2$Al$_3$ through hybridization with the Al $3p$ state in the Al layer, suggesting that the Fermi surface of UPd$_2$Al$_3$ has a strong three-dimensional nature.

The representative chromium-based triad, CrCl3, CrBr3, CrI3, is characterized by the low-temperature phase adopting the trigonal BiI3 type while the structure of the high-temperature phase is monoclinic of AlCl3 type (C2/m). The structural transition between the two crystallographic phases is of the first-order type with large thermal hysteresis in CrCl3 and CrI3. We studied crystal structures and structural phase transitions of vanadium-based counterparts VCl3, VBr3, and VI3 by measuring specific heat, magnetization, and X-ray diffraction as functions of temperature and observed an inverse situation. In these cases, the high-temperature phase has a higher symmetry while the low-temperature structure reveals a lower symmetry. The structural phase transition between them shows no measurable hysteresis in contrast to CrX3. Possible relations of the evolution of the ratio c/a of the unit cell parameters, types of crystal structures, and nature of the structural transitions in V and Cr trihalides are discussed.

The evolution of magnetic properties of isostructural and isoelectronic solid solutions of the superconducting itinerant 5f-electron ferromagnet UCoGe with antiferromagnet UIrGe was studied by magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements of a series of UCo1-xIrxGe compounds in polycrystalline and single crystalline form at various temperatures and magnetic fields. Both the weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity in UCoGe were found to have vanished already for very low Ir substitution for Co x = 0.02. The antiferromagnetism of UIrGe is gradually suppressed. This is documented by a rapid decrease in both Neel temperature and the critical field of the metamagnetic transition with decreasing Ir concentration, which both tend to vanish just above x = 0.8. The section of the T-x phase diagram in the range x between 0.02 and 0.8 is dominated by a correlated paramagnetic phase exhibiting very broad bumps in temperature dependencies of b-axis magnetization and specific heat developing with increasing x. For x = 0.24, wide peaks appear in the c-axis thermomagnetic curves due to antiferromagnetic correlations which may eventually lead to frozen incoherent spin configurations at low temperatures. The correlated paramagnetic phase is also accompanied by specific electrical resistivity anomalies. The T-x phase diagram determined for the UCo1-xIrxGe compounds contrasts with the behavior of the related URh1-xIrxGe system, which was reported to exhibit an extended concentration range of stable ferromagnetism in Rh rich compounds and a discontinuous transformation between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases at a critical Rh-Ir concentration.

We carry out a full refinement of the crystallographic structure and conclude that the low-temperature lattice symmetry is orthorhombic (space group Pmm2; cell parameters: $a = 6.963(4)~Å$ , $b = 14.793(9)~Å$ , $c = 17.126(8)~Å$). We determine the magnetically ordered structure, concluding that below $T_\mathrm{N} = 19.5~\mathrm{K}$ the material undergoes a transition into a partially ordered antiferromagnetic state. The magnetic structure is consistent with the existence of toroidal order in this material. We further test the proposal of a second magnetic transition occurring at $330~\mathrm{mK}$, concluding that the thermodynamic anomalies observed at these temperatures do not reflect modifications of the magnetic structure. Our study provides a consistent picture of the interrelationship of structural and magnetic properties in the frustrated magnet UNi$_4$B previously unresolved.

Despite belonging to a well-studied family of transition metal trihalides, VI_3 has received significant attention only recently. As a hard ferromagnetic van der Waals compound with a large coercivity, it attracted much attention because of its potential use in atomically thin spintronic and optoelectronic devices. However, practical exploration of VI_3 is challenging due to its instability under ambient conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of optical, x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and ellipsometric measurements of VI3 and demonstrate that, similarly to the related van der Waals ferromagnet CrI_3, the degradation process is accelerated by the presence of moisture. The VI_3 surface was covered by selected media commonly used in physical measurements to test its stability and lower the degradation rate three times or higher, providing practical information for experimentalists interested. The decomposition study at ambient conditions shows that the VI_3 single crystal can be used for most of the bulk, magnetization, and optical measurements without any noticeable change of physical properties, as the significant degradation appears first after ~ 2 hours of exposition as illustrated, e.g., by the evolution of the ferromagnetic T_1 and T_2 transitions. The ellipsometric measurement demonstrates that even the surface remains optically stable for at least 5 minutes.

A comprehensive study of magnetocrystalline anisotropy of a layered van-der-Waals ferromagnet VI3 was performed. We measured angular dependences of the torque and magnetization with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field within the "ac" plane perpendicular to and within the basal ab plane, respectively. A two-fold butterfly-like signal was detected by magnetization in the perpendicular "ac" plane. This signal symmetry remains conserved throughout all magnetic regimes as well as through the known structural transition down to the lowest temperatures. The maximum of the magnetization signal and the resulting magnetization easy axis is significantly tilted from the principal c axis by ~40°. The close relation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy to the crystal structure was documented. In contrast, a two-fold-like angular signal was detected in the paramagnetic region within the ab plane in the monoclinic phase, which transforms into a six-fold-like signal below the Curie temperature TC. With further cooling, another six-fold-like signal with an angular shift of ~30° grows approaching TFM. Below TFM, in the triclinic phase, the original six-fold-like signal vanishes, being replaced by a secondary six-fold-like signal with an angular shift of ~30°.

The electrical resistance, Hall resistance and thermoelectric power of the Ising-like antiferromagnet UIrSi3 were measured as functions of temperature and magnetic field. We have observed that the unequivocally different characters of first-order and second-order magnetic phase transitions lead to distinctly different magnetotransport properties in the neighborhood of corresponding critical temperatures and magnetic fields, respectively. The magnetic contributions to the electrical and Hall resistivity in the antiferromagnetic state, and the polarized and normal regimes of paramagnetic state are driven by different underlying mechanisms. Results of detailed measurements of magnetotransport in the vicinity of the tricritical point reveal that the Hall-resistivity steps at phase transitions change polarity just at this point. The jumps in field dependences of specific heat, electrical resistivity, Hall resistivity and Seebeck coefficient at the first-order metamagnetic transitions indicate a Fermi surface reconstruction, which is characteristic of a magnetic-field induced Lifshitz transition. The presented results emphasize the usefulness of measurements of electrical- and thermal-transport properties as sensitive probes of magnetic phase transformations in antiferromagnets sometimes hardly detectable by other methods.

The metamagnetic transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic state in UIrGe has been studied at various temperatures by magnetization, heat capacity and magnetocaloric-effect measurements on a single crystal in static and pulsed magnetic fields applied along the orthorhombic b-axis. A first-order transition is observed at temperatures below 13 K and a second-order one at higher temperatures up to the Néel temperature (TN = 16.5 K). The first-order transition is accompanied by a dramatic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient. Magnetization measurements extended to the paramagnetic range revealed an anomalous S-shape (inflection point at a magnetic field Hm) in magnetization isotherms at temperatures above 13 K and a temperature dependence of susceptibility with a maximum at Tmax well above TN. The lines representing the temperature-induced evolution of Hm and field-induced evolution of Tmax, respectively, are bound for the point in the magnetic phase diagram at which the order of metamagnetic transition changes. A tentative scenario explaining these anomalies by antiferromagnetic correlations or short-range order in the paramagnetic state is discussed.

We present an extensive study of the ferromagnetic heavy fermion compound U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$. Measurements of electrical resistivity, specific heat and magnetic properties show that U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ orders ferromagnetically at ambient pressure with a Curie temperature $T_{C} = 6.8 \pm 0.3$ K. The low temperature magnetic behavior of this soft ferromagnet is dominated by the excitation of gapless spin-wave modes. Our results on the transport properties of U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ under pressures up to $2.49$ GPa suggest that U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ has a putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) at $P_c \approx 1.7 \pm 0.02$ GPa. In the ordered phase, ferromagnetic magnons scatter the conduction electrons and give rise to a well defined power law temperature dependence in the resistivity. The coefficient of this term is related to the spin-wave stiffness and measurements of the very low temperature resistivity allow to accompany the behavior of this quantity as the the ferromagnetic QCP is approached. We find that the spin-wave stiffness decreases with increasing pressure implying that the transition to the non-magnetic Fermi liquid state is driven by the softening of the magnons. The observed quantum critical behavior of the magnetic stiffness is consistent with the influence of disorder in our system. At quantum criticality ($P = P_c \approx 1.7 \pm 0.02$ GPa), the resistivity shows the behavior expected for an itinerant metallic system near a ferromagnetic QCP.

The methodology of single crystal growth of metastable $β$-Ti alloy TIMETAL LCB in an optical floating zone furnace is presented in this paper. Chemical compositions of both precursor material and single crystals were checked. It was found that the concentration of base alloying elements did not change significantly during the growth process, while the concentrations of interstitial elements O and N increased. DSC measurement determined that this concentration shift has a slight impact on ongoing phase transformations, as in the single-crystalline material peak associated with $α$ phase precipitation moves by a few degrees to a lower temperature and peak attributed to diffusion controlled growth of $ω$ particles shifts to a higher temperature. X-ray reciprocal space maps were measured and their simulation showed that the single crystal has a mosaic structure with mean size of mosaic blocks of approximately 60 nm.

Nanosized particles of $ω$ phase in a $β$-Ti alloy were investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation. We demonstrated that the particles are spontaneously weakly ordered in a three-dimensional cubic array along the $\langle 100\rangle$-directions in the $β$-Ti matrix. The small-angle scattering data fit well to a three-dimensional short-range-order model; from the fit we determined the evolution of the mean particle size and mean distance between particles during ageing. The self-ordering of the particles is explained by elastic interaction between the particles, since the relative positions of the particles coincide with local minima of the interaction energy. We performed numerical Monte Carlo simulation of the particle ordering and we obtained a good agreement with the experimental data.

The critical behavior of dc magnetization in the uranium ferromagnet URhAl with the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type crystal structure has been studied around the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_C. The critical exponent beta for the temperature dependence of the spontaneous magnetization below T_C, gamma for the magnetic susceptibility, and delta for the magnetic isotherm at T_C have been obtained with a modified Arrott plot, a Kouvel-Fisher plot, the critical isotherm analysis and the scaling analysis. We have determined the critical exponents as beta = 0.287 +- 0.005, gamma = 1.47 +- 0.02, and delta = 6.08 +- 0.04 by the scaling analysis and the critical isotherm analysis. These critical exponents satisfy the Widom scaling law delta=1+gamma/beta. URhAl has strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, similar to its isostructural UCoAl that has been regarded as a three-dimensional (3D) Ising system in previous studies. However, the universality class of the critical phenomenon in URhAl does not belong to the 3D Ising model (beta = 0.325, gamma = 1.241, and delta = 4.82) with short-range exchange interactions between magnetic moments. The determined exponents can be explained with the results of the renormalization group approach for a two-dimensional (2D) Ising system coupled with long-range interactions decaying as J(r)~r^-(d+sigma) with sigma = 1.44. We suggest that the strong hybridization between the uranium 5f and rhodium 4d electrons in the U-Rh_I layer in the hexagonal crystal structure is a source of the low dimensional magnetic property. The present result is contrary to current understandings of the physical properties in a series of isostructural UTX uranium ferromagnets (T: transition metals, X: p-block elements) based on the 3D Ising model.

Actinide compounds with 5f electrons have been attracting much attention because of their interesting magnetic and electronic properties such as heavy fermion state, unconventional superconductivity, co-existence of the superconductivity and magnetism. Recently, we have reported a phenomenological analysis on 80 actinide ferromagnets with the spin fluctuation theory originally developed to explain the ferromagnetic properties of itinerant ferromagnets in the 3d transition metals and their intermetallics (N. Tateiwa et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 035125 (2017)). Our study suggests the itinerancy of the $5f$ electrons in most of the actinide ferromagnets and the applicability of the spin fluctuation theory to actinide 5f system. In this paper, we present a new analysis for the spin fluctuation parameter obtained with a different theoretical formula not used in the reference. We also discuss the results of the analysis from different points of views.

High-precision angle-resolved dc magnetization and magnetic torque studies were performed on a single-crystalline sample of URhGe, an orthorhombic Ising ferromagnet with the $c$ axis being the magnetization easy axis, in order to investigate the phase diagram around the ferromagnetic (FM) reorientation transition in a magnetic field near the $b$ axis. We have clearly detected first-order transition in both the magnetization and the magnetic torque at low temperatures, and determined detailed profiles of the wing structure of the three-dimensional $T$-$H_{b}$-$H_{c}$ phase diagram, where $H_{c}$ and $H_{b}$ denotes the field components along the $c$ and the $b$ axes, respectively. The quantum wing critical points are located at $μ_0H_c\sim\pm$1.1 T and $μ_0H_b\sim$13.5 T. Two second-order transition lines at the boundaries of the wing planes rapidly tend to approach with each other with increasing temperature up to $\sim 3$ K. Just at the zero conjugate field ($H_c=0$), however, a signature of the first-order transition can still be seen in the field derivative of the magnetization at $\sim 4$ K, indicating that the tricritical point exists in a rather high temperature region above 4 K. This feature of the wing plane structure is consistent with the theoretical expectation that three second-order transition lines merge tangentially at the triciritical point.

We have carried out an analysis of magnetic data in 69 uranium, 7 neptunium and 4 plutonium ferromagnets with the spin fluctuation theory developed by Takahashi (Y. Takahashi, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 55, 3553 (1986)). The basic and spin fluctuation parameters of the actinide ferromagnets are determined and the applicability of the spin fluctuation theory to actinide 5f system has been discussed. Itinerant ferromagnets of the 3d transition metals and their intermetallics follow a generalized Rhodes-Wohlfarth relation between p_eff/p_s and T_C/T_0, viz., p_eff/p_s ~ (T_C/T_0)^(-3/2). Here, p_s, p_eff, T_C, and T_0 are the spontaneous and effective magnetic moments, the Curie temperature and the width of spin fluctuation spectrum in energy space, respectively. The same relation is satisfied for T_C/T_0 < 1.0 in the actinide ferromagnets. However, the relation is not satisfied in a few ferromagnets with T_C/T_0 ~1.0 that corresponds to local moment system in the spin fluctuation theory. The deviation from the theoretical relation may be due to several other effects not included in the spin fluctuation theory such as the crystalline electric field effect on the 5f electrons from ligand atoms. The value of the spontaneous magnetic moment p_s increases linearly as a function of T_C/T_0 in the uranium and neptunium ferromagnets below (T_C/T_0)_kink = 0.32 +- 0.02 where a kink structure appears in relation between the two quantities. p_s increases more weakly above (T_C/T_0)_kink. A possible interpretation with the T_C/T_0-dependence of p_s is given.

We investigated the evolution of magnetism in the UIr1-xRhxGe system by the systematic study of high-quality single crystals. Lattice parameters of both parent compounds are very similar resulting in almost identical nearest interatomic uranium distance close to the Hill limit. We established the x-T phase diagram of the UIr1-xRhxGe system and found a discontinuous antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic boundary at xcrit = 0.56 where a local minimum in ordering temperature and maximum of the Sommerfeld coefficient 175 mJ/mol K2 occurs in the UCoGe-URhGe-UIrGe system, signaling an increase in magnetic fluctuations. However, a quantum critical point is not realized because of the finite ordering temperature at xcrit. A magnon gap on the antiferromagnetic side abruptly suppresses magnetic fluctuations. We find a field-induced first order transition in the vicinity of the critical magnetic field along the b axis in the entire UIr1-xRhxGe system including the ferromagnetic region UCo0.6Rh0.4Ge - URhGe.

Both compounds have been found to order ferromagnetically below TC = 6.5 K and 7.5 K, respectively, which is considerably higher than the TC = 3 K of the parent compound UCoGe. The higher values of TC are accompanied by enhanced values of the spontaneous moment mspont. = 0.11 mB/f.u. and mspont. = 0.21 mB/f.u., respectively in comparison to the tiny spontaneous moment of UCoGe (about 0.07mB/f.u.). No sign of superconductivity was detected in either compound. The magnetic moments of the samples were investigated on the microscopic scale using polarized neutron diffraction (PND) and for UCo0.88Ru0.12Ge also by soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The analysis of the PND results indicates that the observed enhancement of ferromagnetism is mainly due to the growth of the orbital part of the uranium 5f moment mL(U), reflecting a gradual localization of the 5f electrons with Ru substitution. In addition, the parallel orientation of the U and Co moments has been established in both substituted compounds. The results are discussed and compared with related isostructural ferromagnetic UTX compounds (T - transition metals, X - Si, Ge) in the context of a varying degree of the 5f-ligand hybridization.

We have investigated the impact of Ru substitution for Co on the behavior of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe by performing x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline samples of the $\mathrm{UCo}_{1-x}\mathrm{Ru}_{x}\mathrm{Ge}$ series ($0\geq x\leq0.9$). The initial Ru substitution up to $x\approx0.1$ leads to a simultaneous sharp increase of the Curie temperature and spontaneous magnetization up to maximum values of $T_{\mathrm{C}}=8.6 K$ and $M_{\mathrm{S}}=0.1 μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ per formula unit, respectively, whereas superconductivity vanishes already for $x\approx0.03$. Further increase of the Ru content beyond $x\approx0.1$ leads to a precipitous decrease of both, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{S}}$ towards a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) at $x_{\mathrm{cr}}=0.31$. Consequently the $T-x$ magnetic phase diagram consists of a well-developed ferromagnetic dome. We discuss the evolution of ferromagnetism with $x$ on the basis of band structure changes due to varying 5$f$-ligand hybridization. This scenario is supported by the results of electronic structure calculations and consideration of the simplified periodic Anderson model. The analysis of the temperature dependencies of the electrical resistivity and heat capacity at low temperatures of the samples in the vicinity of the QCP reveals a non-Fermi liquid behavior and assigns the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition to be most likely of a continuous Hertz-Millis type.

The analysis of the PND results assigns the ferromagnetism enhancement mainly to the growth of the orbital part of uranium 5 f moment. In contrast to the published results of PND study of the parent UCoGe, we have found parallel orientation of the U and Co moments in both doped compounds. Evolution of magnetic characteristics with Ru concentration is discussed within a scenario considering the varying 5 f-ligand hybridization as the key mechanism.

We have investigated the ferromagnetic (FM) phase which suddenly develops in UCo1-xRuxAl and is isolated by paramagnetic regions on both sides from the parent UCoAl and URuAl. For that purpose we have grown high quality single crystals with x = 0.62, 0.70, 0.74, 0.75 and 0.78. The properties of the FM phase have been investigated by microscopic and macroscopic methods. Polarized neutron diffraction on a single crystal with x = 0.62 revealed the gradual growth of the hybridization between U and T-site in the U - T plane with increasing x. Hybridization works here as a mediator of the strong indirect interaction, while the delocalized character of the 5 f states is still conserved. As a result very weak spontaneous magnetic moments are observed for all alloys with magnitude nearly in proportion to the TC for x < 0.62, while an enormous disproportion exists between them near xcrit.. The magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and Hall effect measurements confirmed that the FM transition is suppressed continuously at the critical concentration xcrit. = 0.77. Two quantum critical points are then expected on both sides of the FM dome. We propose a scenario that the order of the FM/PM transition differs at opposite boundaries of the FM dome. We conclude that both criticalities are influenced by disorder. Criticality on the UCoAl side has the character of a clean FM metal, while on the Ru rich side it has the character of a magnetically inhomogeneous system involving a Griffiths phase.

Polycrystalline samples of SmIr2Si2 formed at room temperature both the low temperature phase (LTP) and the metastable high temperature phase (HTP), respectively, depending on the heat treatment. The samples were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, DTA, specific-heat and magnetization measurements with respect to temperature and magnetic field. The first order LTP to HTP polymorphic phase transition has been determined showing the huge temperature hysteresis of 264°C caused by the high energy barrier due to the change of stacking of Sm, Ir and Si basal plane sheets within the transition. Both polymorphs show indications of antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures. The considerably different magnetic phase transitions determined for the LTP and HTP confirm the strong influence of crystal structure symmetry on magnetism in the two polymorphs. The magnetism in SmIr2Si2 exhibits typical features caused by the specific behavior of Sm3+ ion characterized by energy nearness of the ground state and first excited state and crystal field influence. Interpretation of experimental results is corroborated by results of ab initio electronic structure calculations.

Magnetism in SmPd2Al3 was investigated on a single crystal by magnetometry and neutron diffraction. SmPd2Al3 represents a distinctive example of the Sm magnetism exhibiting complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures with four consecutive magnetic phase transitions at 3.4, 3.9, 4.3 and 12.5 K. The rich magnetic phase diagram of this compound reflects the specific features of the Sm3+ ion, namely the energy nearness of the ground-state multiplet J = 5/2 and the first excited multiplet J = 7/2 in conjunction with strong crystal field influence. Consequently, a significantly reduced Sm magnetic moment in comparison with the theoretical Sm3+ free-ion value is observed. Despite the strong neutron absorption by natural samarium and the small Sm magnetic moment (~ 0.2 μB) we have successfully determined the magnetic k-vector (1/3, 1/3, 0) of the phase existing in the temperature interval 12.5 - 4.3 K. This observation classifies the SmPd2Al3 compound as a magnetically frustrated system. The complex magnetic behavior of this material is further illustrated by kinetic effects of the magnetization inducing rather complicated magnetic structure with various metastable states.

We report on existence of superconductivity in YIr2Si2 and LaIr2Si2 compounds in relation to crystal structure. The two compounds crystallize in two structural polymorphs, both tetragonal. The high temperature polymorph (HTP) adopts the CaBe2Ge2-structure type (space group P4/nmm) while the low temperature polymorph (LTP) is of the ThCr2Si2 type (I4/mmm). By studying polycrystals prepared by arc melting we have observed that the rapidly cooled samples retain the HTP even at room temperature (RT) and below. Annealing such samples at 900C followed by slow cooling to RT provides the LTP. Both, the HTP and LTP were subsequently studied with respect to magnetism and superconductivity by electrical resistivity, magnetization, AC susceptibility and specific heat measurements. The HTP and LTP of both compounds respectively, behave as Pauli paramagnets. Superconductivity has been found exclusively in the HTP of both compounds below Tsc (= 2.52 K in YIr2Si2 and 1.24 K in LaIr2Si2). The relations of magnetism and superconductivity with the electronic and crystal structure are discussed with comparing experimental data with the results of first principles electronic structure calculations.

We propose an alternate scenario for the relation between ferromagnetism (FM) and superconductivity (SC) in UCoGe at ambient pressure. On the basis of neutron polarimetry measurement performed in strictly zero field on a single-crystal at ambient pressure, we claim that the SC phase does exist in spite of lack of long-range FM order. Moreover, the SC regime dominates to the paramagnetic (PM) state in small external magnetic fields. Above the critical SC temperature, TSC = 0.64 K, the zero-field state is characterized by a regime with strong FM spin fluctuations, suggesting the proximity of the FM quantum critical point. We present an ambient-pressure phase diagram of UCoGe based on our resistivity, magnetization and neutron polarimetry results.

In this paper, specific features of Sm magnetism in an intermetallic compound have been studied. For this purpose, a high-quality single crystal of SmPd2Al3 was grown and subjected to detailed measurements of specific heat, magnetization, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity with respect to temperature and a magnetic field applied along the principal crystallographic directions. SmPd2Al3 magnetism was found to be strongly anisotropic with the easy-magnetization direction along the c axis where the main magnetic features are concentrated. The a-axis response remains weak, paramagneticlike, even in the magnetically ordered state. Ferromagnetism with TC=12.4 K has been indicated by all the measured physical properties. At lower temperatures, three successive order-order phase transitions have been observed on the temperature dependence of the specific heat as three anomalies: at 3.4, 3.9, and 4.4 K, respectively. The low-temperature magnetization data can be understood within a scenario that considers the antiferromagnetic ground state as being gradually destroyed through a series of four metamagnetic transitions at 0.03, 0.35, 0.5, and 0.75 T, as detected in the 1.8 K magnetization data. The experimental data are discussed together with the results of electronic-structure and crystal-field calculations from first principles, which were performed as an important part of the study for comprehension and explanation of the observed behavior of the SmPd2Al3 compound.

We report exotic attributes of the SC and FM state in moderate magnetic fields. The observed phenomena clearly demonstrate that the SC regime is superior to the paramagnetic state in the vicinity of $T_{\mathrm{SC}}$. Above $T_{\mathrm{SC}}$, the zero-field state is characterized by a regime with strong FM spin fluctuations, suggesting proximity of the FM quantum critical point (FM-QCP). In addition, we observed that the robust SC regime develops independently on the existence or lack of the long-range FM ordering.
