Black crystals of the mixed-valence osmate(V,VI) Sr4Os3O12 were grown via a gas phase reaction in an evacuated silica tube. The material is attracted to a permanent magnet at room temperature (295 K) but loses this property when heated or cooled. In this temperature interval, soft magnetic behavior with vanishing coercivity is observed, but the saturation magnetization is only 0.05 MuB per formula unit. Resistivity measurements show that Sr4Os3O12 is a semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.26 eV at room temperature. X-ray diffraction on a single-crystal revealed a rhombohedral structure with the space group R-3m and lattice parameters ar = 554.64(2) pm and cr = 2700.1(1) pm at 300(1) K. The compound crystallizes in the La4Ti3O12 structure type and is isostructural to Sr4CoRe2O12. The structure is a rhombohedral stack of layered blocks, each of which can be considered as a section of three layers of the cubic perovskite structure cut perpendicular to one of its threefold axes. The Os-O-Os bond angle of about 175{/deg} favors superexchange that leads to antiferromagnetic coupling between the osmium atoms with 5d3 and 5d2 configurations. Sr4Os3O12 exhibits strong lattice dynamics. One aspect is the antiferro-rotative lattice modes of the corner-sharing [OsO6] octahedra, which freeze upon cooling. At 100 K, an ordered, yet twinned triclinic superstructure is formed. Strong spin-orbit coupling and other effects cause deformations of the [OsO6] octahedra that differ significantly at 300 K and 100 K, suggesting a change in the electronic configuration. Competing ground states could also explain the temperature dependent band gap and the magnetic fluctuations manifested in the magnetization peak at room temperature.

Magnetic dilution of a well-established Kitaev candidate system is realized in the substitutional Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Cl$_3$ series ($x = 0.02-0.6$). Optimized syntheses protocols yield uniformly-doped single crystals and polycrystalline powders that are isostructural to the parental $α$-RuCl$_3$ as per X-ray diffraction. The Rh content $x$ is accurately determined by the quantitative energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy technique with standards. We determine the magnetic phase diagram of Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Cl$_3$ for in-plane magnetic fields from magnetization and specific-heat measurements as a function of $x$ and stacking periodicity, and identify the suppression of the magnetic order at $x \approx 0.2$ towards a disordered phase, which does not show any clear signature of freezing into a spin glass. Comparing with previous studies on the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$, we propose that chemical pressure would contribute to the suppression of magnetic order especially in Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$ and that the zigzag magnetic ground state appears to be relatively robust with respect to the dilution of the Kitaev--$Γ$--Heisenberg magnetic lattice. We also discovered a slight dependence of the magnetic properties on thermal cycling, which would be due to an incomplete structural transition.

We report the discovery of an intriguing pressure-driven phase transformation in the layered Kitaev-material $α$-RuCl$_3$. By analyzing both the Bragg scattering as well as the diffuse scattering of high-quality single crystals, we reveal a collective reorganization of the layer stacking throughout the crystal. Importantly, this transformation also effects the structure of the RuCl$_3$ honeycomb layers, which acquire a high trigonal symmetry with a single Ru--Ru distance of 3.41Å and a single Ru--Cl--Ru bond angle of 92.8°. Hydrostatic pressure therefore allows to tune the structure of $α$-RuCl$_3$ much closer to the ideal Kitaev-limit. The high-symmetry phase can also be stabilized by biaxial stress, which can explain conflicting results reported earlier and, more importantly, makes the high-symmetry phase accessible to a variety of experiments.

Some systems of this family that show no long-range order down to the lowest measured temperatures, such as NaYbO$_2$, NaYbS$_2$, and NaYbSe$_2$, are presumed to be in a quantum spin-liquid state. However, other isostructural compounds are known to order antiferromagnetically at subkelvin temperatures. Among them, KCeS$_2$ exhibits stripe-$yz$ magnetic order in the triangular-lattice planes that sets in below 400 mK. Here we investigate the spin-wave spectrum of this ordered phase with powder inelastic neutron scattering and describe it using a model Hamiltonian obtained from first-principles calculations based on the complete $|J,m_J\rangle$ multiplet description of the Ce sites with an anisotropic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. Combing the current understanding of the exchange interaction in the systems with the effects of texturing in the powder, we have been able to model the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with high fidelity.

We report a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structural and magnetic aspects of the layered honeycomb antiferromagent $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements performed under almost ideal hydrostatic-pressure conditions yield that the phase transition to zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 7.3 K can be rapidly suppressed to about 6.1 K. A further suppression with increasing pressure is impeded due to the occurrence of a pressure-induced structural transition at $p \geq$ 104 MPa, accompanied by a strong dimerization of Ru-Ru bonds, which gives rise to a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Whereas the dimerization transition is strongly first order, as reflected by large discontinuous changes in $χ$ and pronounced hysteresis effects, the magnetic transition under varying pressure and magnetic field also reveals indications for a weakly first-order transition. We assign this observation to a strong magnetoelastic coupling in this system. Measurements of $χ$ under varying pressure in the paramagnetic regime ($T > T_N$) and before dimerization ($p <$ 100 MPa) reveal a considerable increase of $χ$ with pressure. These experimental observations are consistent with the results of ab-initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the pressure-dependent structure and the corresponding pressure-dependent magnetic model. Comparative susceptibility measurements on a second crystal showing two consecutive magnetic transitions instead of one, indicating the influence of stacking faults. Using different temperature-pressure protocols the effect of these stacking faults can be temporarily overcome, transforming the magnetic state from a multiple-$T_N$ into a single-$T_N$ state.

Here we present the solid-solution series NaYb$_{1-x}$Lu$_{x}$S$_2$ with well-defined single crystals over the entire substitution range $0\le x\le 1$. Chemical and structural analysis indicate a statistically homogeneous replacement of Yb$^{3+}$ by Lu$^{3+}$ ions. We magnetically characterize the relatively small single crystals using electron spin resonance (ESR). Below $30$K the ESR intensity can be well described by a Curie-Weiss function for all \textit{x}, with a decreasing Weiss temperature with increasing Lu content. This reduction of the average magnetic interaction upon Lu substitution is also supported by magnetization measurements. Importantly, no signs of magnetic or spin-glass order are detected down to $2$K for any $x$. For $x>0.5$ the ESR linewidth strongly increases, indicating the breakup of the magnetic system into disconnected clusters as expected from percolation physics. The experimental magnetization data are found to be in good agreement for all $x$ with results of classical Monte-Carlo simulations for a triangular-lattice Heisenberg model, amended with a small second-neighbor interaction. Taken together, our results establish NaYb$_{1-x}$Lu$_{x}$S$_2$ as a family of diluted triangular-lattice spin liquids.

Yb- and Ce-based delafossites were recently identified as effective spin-1/2 antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Several Yb-based systems, such as NaYbO2, NaYbS2, and NaYbSe2, exhibit no long-range order down to the lowest measured temperatures and therefore serve as putative candidates for the realization of a quantum spin liquid. However, their isostructural Ce-based counterpart KCeS2 exhibits magnetic order below TN = 400 mK, which was so far identified only in thermodynamic measurements. Here we reveal the magnetic structure of this long-range ordered phase using magnetic neutron diffraction. We show that it represents the so-called "stripe-yz" type of antiferromagnetic order with spins lying approximately in the triangular-lattice planes orthogonal to the nearest-neighbor Ce-Ce bonds. No structural lattice distortions are revealed below TN, indicating that the triangular lattice of Ce3+ ions remains geometrically perfect down to the lowest temperatures. We propose an effective Hamiltonian for KCeS2, based on a fit to the results of ab initio calculations, and demonstrate that its magnetic ground state matches the experimental spin structure.

While the Heisenberg model for magnetic Mott insulators on planar lattice structures is comparatively well understood in the case of transition metal ions, the intrinsic spin-orbit entanglement of 4f magnetic ions on such lattices shows fascinating new physics largely due to corresponding strong anisotropies both in their single-ion and their exchange properties. We show here that the Yb delafossites, containing perfect magnetic Yb$^{3+}$ triangular lattice planes with pseudospin $s=1/2$ at low temperatures, are an ideal platform to study these new phenomena. Competing frustrated interactions may lead to an absence of magnetic order associated to a gapless spin liquid ground state with a huge linear specific heat exceeding that of many heavy fermions, whereas the application of a magnetic field induces anisotropic magnetic order with successive transitions into different long ranged ordered structures. In this comparative study, we discuss our experimental findings in terms of a unified crystal-field and exchange model. We combine electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and results from neutron scattering with measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization up to full polarization, and specific heat to determine the relevant model parameters. The impact of the crystal field is discussed as well as the symmetry-compatible form of the exchange tensor, and we give explicit expressions for the anisotropic g factor, the temperature dependence of the susceptibility, the exchange-narrowed EPR linewidth and the saturation field.

We investigate the phononic in-plane longitudinal low-temperature thermal conductivity kappa_ab of the Kitaev quantum magnet alpha-RuCl3 for large in-plane magnetic fields up to 33 T. Our data reveal for fields larger than the critical field Bc ~ 8 T, at which the magnetic order is suppressed, a dramatic increase of kappa_ab at all temperatures investigated. The analysis of our data shows that the phonons are not only strongly scattered by a magnetic mode at relatively large energy which scales roughly linearly with the magnetic field, but also by a small-energy mode which emerges near Bc with a square-root-like field dependence. While the former is in striking agreement with recent spin wave theory (SWT) results of the magnetic excitation spectrum at the Gamma point, the energy of the latter is too small to be compatible with the SWT-expected magnon gap at the M point, despite the matching field dependence. Therefore, an alternative scenario based on phonon scattering off the thermal excitation of random-singlet states is proposed.

We report a comprehensive high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study on single crystals of the van der Waals magnet CrCl$_3$. This material, although being known for quite a while, has received recent significant attention in a context of the use of van der Waals magnets in novel spintronic devices. Temperature-dependent measurements of the resonance fields were performed between 4 and 175 K and with the external magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the honeycomb planes of the crystal structure. These investigations reveal that the resonance line shifts from the paramagnetic resonance position already at temperatures well above the transition into a magnetically ordered state. Thereby the existence of ferromagnetic short-range correlations above the transition is established and the intrinsically two-dimensional nature of the magnetism in the title compound is proven. To study details of the magnetic anisotropies in the field-induced effectively ferromagnetic state at low temperatures, frequency-dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were conducted at 4 K. The observed anisotropy between the two magnetic-field orientations is analyzed by means of numerical simulations based on a phenomenological theory of FMR. These simulations are in excellent agreement with measured data if the shape anisotropy of the studied crystal is taken into account, while the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is found to be negligible in CrCl$_3$. The absence of a significant intrinsic anisotropy thus renders this material as a practically ideal isotropic Heisenberg magnet.

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.

At low temperatures, it features an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ state due to the combined effect of crystal electric field and spin orbit coupling. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance experiments reveal the absence of magnetic long range ordering down to 2~K, which suggests a possible quantum spin liquid ground state. A dominant antiferromagnetic nearest neighbour exchange interaction $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq$ 5.3~K could be extracted form the magnetic susceptibility. The NMR linewidth analysis yields the coupling constant between the Li nuclei and Yb$^{3+}$ ions which was found to be purely dipolar in nature.

Clearly resolved ESR spectra allow to obtain well-defined $g$ values which are determined by the crystal field of the distorted octahedral surrounding of the Yb-ions in trigonal symmetry. This local crystal field information provides important input to characterize the effective $S = 1/2$ Kramers doublet as well as the anisotropic exchange coupling between the Yb ions which is crucial for the nature of the groundstate. The ESR linewidth $ΔB$ is characterised by the spin dynamics and is mainly determined by the anisotropic exchange coupling. We discuss and compare $ΔB$ of the above mentioned delafossites focussing on the low temperature behaviour which is dominated by the growing influence of spin correlations.

The low-field measurements confirm the absence of any spin freezing or long-range magnetic order down to 50~mK, which suggests a quantum spin liquid ground (QSL) state with gapless excitations. The instability of the QSL state is observed upon applying magnetic fields. For the $H\bot c$ direction, a field-induced magnetic phase transition is observed above 2~T from the $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data, agreeing with a clear $\frac{M_s}{3}$ plateau of $M(H)$, which is associated with an up-up-down (uud) spin arrangement. For the $H\|c$ direction, a field-induced transition could be evidenced at a much higher field range (9 - 21~T). The $^{23}$Na NMR measurements provide microscopic evidence for field-induced ordering for both directions. A reentrant behavior of $T_{\rm N}$, originating from the thermal and quantum spin fluctuations, is observed for both directions. The anisotropic exchange interactions $J_{\perp}\simeq$ 4.7~K and $J_z\simeq$2.33~K are extracted from the modified bond-dependent XXZ model for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet. The absence of magnetic long-range order at zero fields is assigned to the effect of strong bond-frustration, arising from the complex spin-orbit entangled $4f$ ground state. Finally, we derive the highly anisotropic magnetic phase diagram, which is discussed in comparison with the existing theoretical models for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets.

Rare-earth delafossites were recently proposed as promising candidates for the realization of an effective $S$=1/2 quantum spin liquid (QSL) on the triangular lattice. In contrast to the most actively studied triangular-lattice antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$, which is known for considerable structural disorder due to site intermixing, NaYbS$_2$ delafossite realizes structurally ideal triangular layers. We present detailed $μ$SR studies on this regular (undistorted) triangular Yb sublattice based system with effective spin $J_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ in the temperature range 0.05 - 40 K. Zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR studies confirm the absence of any long range magnetic order state down to 0.05K ($\sim J$/80). Current $μ$SR results together with the so far available bulk characterization data suggest that NaYbS$_2$ is an ideal candidate to identify QSL ground state.

Magnetization measurements on single crystals revealed a reversal of the magnetic anisotropy under doping, which we argue to arise from the competition between anisotropic Kitaev and off-diagonal interactions on the Ru-Ru links and approximately isotropic Cr-Ru and isotropic Cr-Cr interactions. In addition, combined magnetization, ac susceptibility and specific-heat measurements clearly show the destabilization of the long-range magnetic order of $α$-RuCl$_3$ in favor of a spin-glass state of Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ for a low doping of $x\backsimeq0.1$. The corresponding freezing temperature as a function of Cr content shows a broad maximum around $x\backsimeq0.45$.

Fine-tuning chemistry by doping with transition metals enables new perspectives for exploring Kitaev physics on a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice of α-RuCl3, which is promising in the field of quantum information protection and quantum computation. The key parameters to vary by doping are both Heisenberg and Kitaev components of the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction between the Jeff = 1/2 Ru3+ spins, depending strongly on the peculiarities of the crystal structure. Here, we successfully grew single crystals of the solid solution series Ru1-xCrxCl3 with Cr3+ ions coupled to the Ru3+ Kitaev host using chemical vapour transport reaction. The Cr3+ substitution preserves the honeycomb type lattice of α-RuCl3 with mixed occupancy of Ru/Cr sites, no hints on cationic order within the layers were found by single crystal X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy investigations. In contrast to the high quality single crystals of α-RuCl3 with ABAB ordered layers, the ternary compounds demonstrate a significant stacking disorder along the c-axis direction evidenced by X-ray diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM). Raman spectra of substituted samples are in line with a symmetry conservation of the parent lattice upon chromium doping. At the same time, magnetic susceptibility data indicate that the Kitaev physics of α-RuCl3 is increasingly repressed by the dominant spin-only driven magnetism of Cr3+ in Ru1-xCrxCl3.

Crystal growth of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ has delivered the first experimental corroboration of the 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator state. Our present results confirm that the synthesis of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ can be scaled-up and strengthen it as a promising experimental platform for studies of a crossover between magnetic ordering and non-trivial topology. High-quality single crystals of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ are grown by slow cooling within a narrow range between the melting points of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ (586 °C) and MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ (600 °C). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy reveal ubiquitous antisite defects in both cation sites and, possibly, Mn vacancies. Powders of MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ can be obtained at subsolidus temperatures, and a complementary thermochemical study establishes a limited high-temperature range of phase stability. Nevertheless, quenched powders are stable at room temperature and exhibit long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 24 K. The expected Mn(II) out-of-plane magnetic state is confirmed by the magnetization, X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption and linear dichroism data. MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ exhibits a metallic type of resistivity in the range 4.5-300 K. The compound is an n-type conductor that reaches a thermoelectric figure of merit up to ZT = 0.17. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments provide evidence for a surface state forming a gapped Dirac cone.

Our single-crystal studies clearly evidence a strongly anisotropic quasi-2D magnetism and an emerging spin-orbit entangled $S=1/2$ state of Yb towards low temperatures together with an absence of long-range magnetic order down to 260~mK. In particular, the clear and narrow Yb ESR lines together with narrow $^{23}$Na NMR lines evidence an absence of inherent structural distortions in the system, which is in strong contrast to the related spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_{4}$ falling within the same space group $R\overline{3}m$. This identifies NaYbS$_{2}$ as a rather pure spin-1/2 triangular lattice magnet and a new putative quantum spin liquid.

The honeycomb Kitaev model in a magnetic field is a source of a topological quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. We present experimental results for the thermal Hall effect of the material $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ which recently emerged as a prime candidate for realizing such physics. At temperatures above long-range magnetic ordering $T\gtrsim T_N\approx8$ K, we observe with an applied magnetic field $B$ perpendicular to the honeycomb layers a sizeable positive transversal heat conductivity $κ_{xy}$ which increases linearly with $B$. Upon raising the temperature, $κ_{xy}(T)$ increases strongly, exhibits a broad maximum at around 30 K, and eventually becomes negligible at $T\gtrsim 125$ K. Remarkably, the longitudinal heat conductivity $κ_{xx}(T)$ exhibits a sizeable positive thermal magnetoresistance effect. Thus, our findings provide clear-cut evidence for longitudinal and transverse magnetic heat transport and underpin the unconventional nature of the quasiparticles in the paramagnetic phase of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$.

Magnetization and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of the Kitaev-Heisenberg material alpha-RuCl3 reveal a pressure-induced crystallographic and magnetic phase transition at a hydrostatic pressure of p=0.2 GPa. This structural transition into a triclinic phase is characterized by a very strong dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds, accompanied by a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Ab initio quantum-chemistry calculations disclose a pressure-induced enhancement of the direct 4d-4d bonding on particular Ru-Ru links, causing a sharp increase of the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. These combined experimental and computational data show that the Kitaev spin liquid phase in alpha-RuCl3 strongly competes with the crystallization of spin singlets into a valence bond solid.

Topologically ordered states of matter are generically characterized by excitations with quantum number fractionalization. A prime example is the spin liquid realized in Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice compass model where spin-flip excitations fractionalize into Majorana fermions and Ising gauge fluxes. While numerous compounds have been proposed to be proximate to such a spin-liquid phase, clear-cut evidence for fractionalized excitations is lacking. Here we employ microwave absorption measurements to study the low-energy excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ over a wide range of frequencies, magnetic fields, and temperatures, covering in particular the vicinity of the field-driven quantum phase transition where long-range magnetic order disappears. In addition to conventional gapped magnon modes we find a highly unusual broad continuum characteristic of fractionalization which -- most remarkably -- extends to energies below the lowest sharp mode and to temperatures significantly higher than the ordering temperature, and develops a gap of a nontrivial origin in strong magnetic fields. Our results unravel the signatures of fractionalized excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and pave the way to a more complete understanding of the Kitaev spin liquid and its instabilities.

A quantum spin-liquid might be realized in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, a honeycomb-lattice magnetic material with substantial spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a Mott insulator, which implies the possibility that novel exotic phases occur upon doping. Here, we study the electronic structure of this material when intercalated with potassium by photoemission spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. We obtain a stable stoichiometry at K$_{0.5}$RuCl$_3$. This gives rise to a peculiar charge disproportionation into formally Ru$^{2+}$ (4$d^6$) and Ru$^{3+}$ (4$d^5$). Every Ru 4$d^5$ site with one hole in the $t_{2g}$ shell is surrounded by nearest neighbors of 4$d^6$ character, where the $t_{2g}$ level is full and magnetically inert. Thus, each type of Ru sites forms a triangular lattice and nearest-neighbor interactions of the original honeycomb are blocked.

Kitaev-type interactions between neighbouring magnetic moments emerge in the honeycomb material $α$-RuCl3. It is debated however whether these Kitaev interactions are ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. With electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) we study the lowest excitation across the Mott-Hubbard gap, which involves a d4 triplet in the final state and therefore is sensitive to nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations. At low temperature the spectral weight of these triplets is strongly enhanced, in accordance with optical data. We show that the magnetic correlation function that determines this EELS spectral weight is directly related to a Kitaev-type spin-spin correlator and that the temperature dependence agrees very well with the results of a microscopic magnetic Hamiltonian for $α$-RuCl3 with ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling.

$α$-RuCl$_3$ has attracted enormous attention since it has been proposed as a prime candidate to study fractionalized magnetic excitations akin to Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice spin liquid. We have performed a detailed specific-heat investigation at temperatures down to $0.4$ K in applied magnetic fields up to $9$ T for fields parallel to the $ab$ plane. We find a suppression of the zero-field antiferromagnetic order, together with an increase of the low-temperature specific heat, with increasing field up to $μ_0H_c\approx 6.9$ T. Above $H_c$, the magnetic contribution to the low-temperature specific heat is strongly suppressed, implying the opening of a spin-excitation gap. Our data point toward a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $H_c$; this is supported by universal scaling behavior near $H_c$. Remarkably, the data also reveal the existence of a small characteristic energy scale well below $1$~meV above which the excitation spectrum changes qualitatively. We relate the data to theoretical calculations based on a $J_1$--$K_1$--$Γ_1$--$J_3$ honeycomb model.

The honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model is a source of a quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. In the quest of finding a pertinent material, $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ recently emerged as a prime candidate. Here we unveil highly unusual low-temperature heat conductivity $κ$ of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$: beyond a magnetic field of $B_c\approx$ 7.5 T, $κ$ increases by about one order of magnitude, resulting in a large magnetic field dependent peak at about 7 K, both for in-plane as well as out-of-plane transport. This clarifies the unusual magnetic field dependence unambiguously to be the result of severe scattering of phonons off putative Kitaev-Heisenberg excitations in combination with a drastic field-induced change of the magnetic excitation spectrum. In particular, an unexpectedly large energy gap arises, which increases approximately linearly with the magnetic field and reaches a remarkably large $\hbarω_0/k_B\approx $ 50 K at 18 T.

This makes $α$-RuCl$_3$ a promising candidate for the realization of Kitaev physics. Relevant electronic parameters such as the Hubbard energy U, the crystal field splitting 10Dq and the charge transfer energy are evaluated. By cooling below the structural transition temperature splitting of the Bragg reflections was observed corresponding to four different twin domain orientations. A model was developed to quantify the distortion of the lattice from the position of the splitted reflections relative to each other. Constrained 2D-Cauchy fits of several splitted reflections provided positions of the reflections. The influence of the structural distortion was detectable already above the structural transition temperature hinting at fluctuations in the tetragonal phase.

The measurement of ρ_perpend(T) was performed with current flow along the tetragonal [1 0 0] direction and along the [1 1 0] direction and revealed a clear in-plane anisotropy already at T \leq 175 K. This is significantly above the orthorhombic distortion at T_0 = 147 K and indicates the formation of an electron nematic phase. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity give evidence for a change of the magnetic structure of the iron atoms from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic arrangement along the c-axis at T^\ast = 11 K.

A new crystal growth technique for single-crystals of REFeAsO (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Tb) using NaI/KI as flux is presented. Crystals with a size up to 300 $μ$m were isolated for single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. Lattice parameters were determined by LeBail fits of X-ray powder data against LaB6 standard. A consistent set of structural data is obtained and interpreted in a hard-sphere model. Effective radii for the rare-earth metal atoms for REFeAsO are deduced. The relation of the intra- and inter-plane distances of the arsenic atoms is identified as limiter of the phase formation, and its influence on Tc is discussed.

The results of magnetization, heat-capacity, and electrical resistivity (rho) studies of the compounds, RMAs2 (R= Pr and Sm; M= Ag, Au), crystallizing in HfCuSi2-derived structure are reported. PrAgAs2 orders antiferromagnetically at T_N= 5 K. The Au analogue, however, does not exhibit long range magnetic order down to 1.8 K. We infer that this is due to subtle differences in their crystallographic features, particularly noting that both the Sm compounds with identical crystal structure as that of former order magnetically nearly at the same temperature (about 17 K). It appears that, in PrAgAs2, SmAgAs2, and SmAuAs2, there is an additional magnetic transition at a lower temperature, as though the similarity in the crystal structure results in similarities in magnetism as well. The rho for PrAgAs2 and PrAuAs2 exhibits negative temperature coefficient in some temperature range in the paramagnetic state. SmAuAs2 exhibits magnetic Brillouin-zone gap effect in rho at T_N, while SmAgAs2 shows a well-defined broad minimum well above T_N around 45 K. Thus, these compounds reveal interesting magnetic and transport properties.

The Eu-based compound, EuCu2As2, crystallizing in the ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal structure, has been synthesized and its magnetic behavior has been investigated by magnetization (M), heat-capacity (C) and electrical resistivity (rho) measurements as a function of temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) as well as by 151Eu Moessbauer measurements. The results reveal that Eu is divalent ordering antiferromagnetically below 15 K in the absence of magnetic field, apparently with the formation of magnetic Brillouin-zone boundary gaps. A fascinating observation is made in a narrow temperature range before antiferromagnetism sets in: That is, there is a remarkable upturn just below 20 K in the plot of magnetic susceptibility versus T even at low fields, as though the compound actually tends to order ferromagnetically. There are corresponding anomalies in the magnetocaloric effect data as well. In addition, a small application of magnetic field (around 1 kOe at 1.8 K) in the antiferromagnetic state causes spin-reorientation effect. These results suggest that there is a close balance between antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism in this compound

The results of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity ($ρ$), heat-capacity (C) and thermopower (S) measurements on CeCuAs2, forming in ZrCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, are reported. Our investigations reveal that Ce is trivalent and there is no clear evidence for long range magnetic ordering down to 45 mK. The $ρ$ behavior is notable in the sense that (i) the temperature (T)-coefficient of $ρ$ is negative in the entire range of measurement (45 mK to 300 K) with large values of $ρ$, while S behavior is typical of metallic Kondo lattices, and (ii) $ρ$ is proportional to T-0.6 at low temperatures, without any influence on the exponent by the application of a magnetic field, which does not seem to classify this compound into hither-to-known non-Fermi liquid (NFL) systems. In contrast to the logarithmic increase known for NFL systems, C/T measured down to 0.5 K exhibits a fall below 2 K. The observed properties of this compound are unusual among Ce systems.

The results of dc magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity (rho) and magnetoresistance measurements are reported in detail for the compounds, RCuAs2 for R= Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, crystallizing in HfCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, with the aim of bringing out anomalies among 'normal' (that is, other than Ce and Yb) rare-earths. The results establish that all these compounds order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures with deviations from de Gennes scaling. Isothermal magnetization (M) data below respective Neel temperatures (TN) reveal the existence of field-induced metamagnetic-like transitions for most of the compounds (except R= Sm and Gd), whereas in Sm and Gd compounds M varies essentially linearly with magnetic field. With respect to the rho behavior, there appears to be a subtle difference in the temperature dependence beyond 50 K between Sm on the one hand and the rest on the other. In addition, the unexpected rho(T) minimum reported recently for R = Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy in the paramagnetic state (around 20 to 30 K) is essentially absent for R = Ho and Er. The results overall reveal that the normal rare-earths in this series present an interesting situation in magnetism, warranting a new theoretical approach to describe the transport behavior in the paramagnetic state particularly in the vicinity of TN.

We report an unusual temperature (T) dependent electrical resistivity($ρ$) behavior in a class of ternary intermetallic compounds of the type RCuAs$_2$ (R= Rare-earths). For some rare-earths (Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy) with negligible 4f-hybridization, there is a pronounced minimum in $ρ$(T) far above respective Néel temperatures (T$_N$). However, for the rare-earths which are more prone to exhibit such a $ρ$(T) minimum due to 4f-covalent mixing and the Kondo effect, this minimum is depressed. These findings, difficult to explain within the hither-to-known concepts, present an interesting scenario in magnetism.
