We have proposed an arbitrary vector beam (VB) generation scheme in a thin disk-shaped quantum dot (QD) medium considering phonon interaction. The QD biexciton system exhibits interplay between first and third-order nonlinear susceptibility between two orthogonal circular polarisation transitions. Three QD transitions are coupled with one applied weak and two strong control orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying fields. Therefore, the applied field experiences absorption, and a new field with the desired OAM is generated via four-wave mixing (FWM). These two orthogonal field superpositions produce VB at the QD medium end. We have also demonstrated the polarization rotation of a VB by changing only the relative control field phase. Additionally, we have analyzed the effect of temperature on the VB generation.

Recently, a method has been proposed to detect the rotation of a ring Bose-Einstein condensate, in situ, in real-time and with minimal destruction, using a cavity driven with optical fields carrying orbital angular momentum. This method is sensitive to the magnitude of the condensate winding number but not its sign. In the present work, we consider simulations of the rotation of the angular lattice formed by the optical fields and show that the resulting cavity transmission spectra are sensitive to the sign of the condensate winding number. We demonstrate the minimally destructive technique on persistent current rotational eigenstates, counter-rotating superpositions, and a soliton singly or in collision with a second soliton. Conversely, we also investigate the sensitivity of the ring condensate, given knowledge of its winding number, to the rotation of the optical lattice. This characterizes the effectiveness of the optomechanical configuration as a laboratory rotation sensor. Our results are important to studies of rotating ring condensates used in atomtronics, superfluid hydrodynamics, simulation of topological defects and cosmological theories, interferometry using matter-wave solitons, and optomechanical sensing.

We explore both incoherent and coherent pumping at low temperatures to achieve suitable conditions for two-mode two-photon lasing. The two-mode two-photon stimulated emission is strongly suppressed but the single-photon stimulated emission is enhanced by exciton-phonon interactions. In coherently pumped quantum dot one can achieve large two-mode two-photon lasing where single-photon lasing is almost absent. We theoretically investigate rapid adiabatic passage(RAP)-based super-resolution imaging in a two-level quantum dot system interacting with two structured beams. To understand the physical mechanism behind the formation of super-resolution for the experiment of Kaldewey {\it et. al.,}[Nature Photonics 10.1038/s41566-017-0079-y (2018)], we first use Liouville's density matrix where photon-mediated radiative and non-radiative decays are incorporated. A suitably chosen spatiotemporal envelope of the structured beams enables the formation of a super-resolution image. We also find that the feature size of the image depends on the intensity of the Laguerre Gaussian beam(LG). However, the created image resolution undergoes distortion due to the existence of a low-intensity circular ring. The unwanted circular ring arises from the dominance of the LG beam tail over the super-Gaussian(SG) beam tail, initiating the residual population transfer from the ground state to the excited state. This limitation can be overcome by using the Bessel-modulated truncated structured LG and SG beams. We next study the dynamics of the semiconductor quantum dot system at finite temperatures wherein the phonon interaction becomes imperative. We employ the polaron-transformed master equation to explore the system at higher temperatures. Our numerical results confirm that the sharpness of the image remains intact at low temperatures with weak phonon coupling. Hence, the proposed scheme may open up applications in nano-scale imaging with quantum dots.

We present numerical simulations of the cavity optomechanical detection of persistent currents and bright solitons in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a ring trap. This work describes a novel technique that measures condensate rotation in situ, in real-time, and with minimal destruction, in contrast to currently used methods, all of which destroy the condensate completely. For weakly repulsive inter-atomic interactions, the analysis of persistent currents extends our previous few-mode treatment of the condensate [P. Kumar et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 113601 (2021)] to a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii simulation. For weakly attractive atomic interactions, we present the first analysis of optomechanical detection of matter-wave soliton motion. We provide optical cavity transmission spectra containing signatures of the condensate rotation, sensitivity as a function of the system response frequency, and atomic density profiles quantifying the effect of the measurement backaction on the condensate. We treat the atoms at a mean-field level and the optical field classically, account for damping and noise in both degrees of freedom, and investigate the linear as well as nonlinear response of the configuration. Our results are consequential for the characterization of rotating matter waves in studies of atomtronics, superfluid hydrodynamics, and matter-wave soliton interferometry.

We investigate the feasibility of minimum absorption and minimum broadening of pulse propagation in an inhomogeneously broadened semiconductor quantum dot medium. The phonon interaction is inevitable in studying any semiconductor quantum dot system. We have used the polaron transformation technique to deal with quantum dot phonon interaction in solving system dynamics. We demonstrate that a short pulse can propagate inside the medium with minimal absorption and broadening in pulse shape. The stable pulse area becomes slightly higher than the prediction of the pulse area theorem and is also dependent on the environment temperature. The change in the final pulse shape is explained very well by numerically solving the propagation equation supported by the susceptibility of the medium. Our system also exhibits the pulse breakup phenomena for higher input pulse areas. Therefore, the considered scheme can have important applications in quantum communication, quantum information, and mode-locking with the advantage of scalability and controllability.

The magnetic and structural phase transitions occurring in K$_2$ReCl$_6$ were studied by macroscopic and microscopic techniques. Structural phase transitions associated with rotations of the ReCl$_6$ octahedra lower the symmetry from cubic to monoclinic, form ferroelastic domains, and are visible in susceptibility, specific heat and thermal expansion measurements. In the antiferromagnetically ordered state slightly below $T_{\rm N}$=12\,K these domains can be rearranged by a magnetic field inducing a relative elongation of the polydomain crystal parallel to the field of 0.6\%. At zero field the magnetic structure in K$_2$ReCl$_6$ does not exhibit a weak ferromagnetic component, but at large magnetic field a distinct magnetic structure with a finite weak ferromagnetic component is stabilized. High magnetic fields rearrange the domains in the crystal to align the weak ferromagnetic moment parallel to the field. The altered domain structure with the crystal elongation is abruptly suppressed at lower temperature but persists upon heating to well above $T_{\rm N}$. However, heating above the lowest structural phase transition and successive cooling restore the initial shape.

The mixed-valent iridate Ba3InIr2O9 has been discussed as a promising candidate for quantum spin-liquid behavior. The compound exhibits Ir$^{4.5+}$ ions in face-sharing IrO6 octahedra forming Ir2O9 dimers with three t2g holes per dimer. Our results establish Ba3InIr2O9 as a cluster Mott insulator. Strong intra-dimer hopping delocalizes the three t2g holes in quasi-molecular dimer states while inter-dimer charge fluctuations are suppressed by Coulomb repulsion. The magnetism of Ba3InIr2O9 emerges from spin-orbit entangled quasi-molecular moments with yet unexplored interactions, opening up a new route to unconventional magnetic properties of 5d compounds. Using single-crystal x-ray diffraction we find the monoclinic space group C2/c already at room temperature. Dielectric spectroscopy shows insulating behavior. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) reveals a rich excitation spectrum below 1.5 eV with a sinusoidal dynamical structure factor that unambiguously demonstrates the quasi-molecular character of the electronic states. Below 0.3 eV, we observe a series of excitations. According to exact diagonalization calculations, such low-energy excitations reflect the proximity of Ba3InIr2O9 to a hopping-induced phase transition based on the condensation of a quasi-molecular spin-orbit exciton. The dimer ground state roughly hosts two holes in a bonding j=1/2 orbital and the third hole in a bonding j=3/2 orbital.

Tomography is a widely used tool for analyzing microstructures in three dimensions (3D). The analysis, however, faces difficulty because the constituent materials produce similar grey-scale values. Sometimes, this prompts the image segmentation process to assign a pixel/voxel to the wrong phase (active material or pore). Consequently, errors are introduced in the microstructure characteristics calculation. In this work, we develop a filtering algorithm called PerSplat based on topological persistence (a technique used in topological data analysis) to improve segmentation quality. One problem faced when evaluating filtering algorithms is that real image data in general are not equipped with the `ground truth' for the microstructure characteristics. For this study, we construct synthetic images for which the ground-truth values are known. On the synthetic images, we compare the pore tortuosity and Minkowski functionals (volume and surface area) computed with our PerSplat filter and other methods such as total variation (TV) and non-local means (NL-means). Moreover, on a real 3D image, we visually compare the segmentation results provided by our filter against TV and NL-means. The experimental results indicate that PerSplat provides a significant improvement in segmentation quality.

We investigate via exact diagonalization of finite clusters the electronic structure and magnetism of M$_2$O$_9$ dimers in the mixed-valence hexagonal perovskites A$_3$B'M$_2$O$_9$ for various different fillings of 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition-metal M ions. We find that the magnetic moments of such dimers are determined by a subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, Hund's coupling, and Coulomb repulsion, as well as the electron filling of the M ions. Most importantly, the magnetic moments are anisotropic and temperature-dependent. This behavior is a result of spin-orbit coupling, magnetic field effects, and the existence of several nearly-degenerate electronic configurations whose proximity allows occupation of excited states already at room temperature. This analysis is consistent with experimental susceptibility measurements for a variety of dimer-based materials. Furthermore, we perform a survey of A$_3$B'M$_2$O$_9$ materials and propose ground-state phase diagrams for the experimentally relevant M fillings of $d^{4.5}$, $d^{3.5}$ and $d^{2.5}$. Finally, our results show that the usually applied Curie-Weiss law with a constant magnetic moment cannot be used in these spin-orbit-coupled materials.

$^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and terahertz (THz) spectroscopies are used to probe magnetic excitations and their field dependence in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) measured down to 100\,mK indicates gapless nature of the excitations at low fields (below $H_c\simeq 2.8$\,T), in contrast to the gapped magnon excitations found in the honeycomb Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ at zero applied magnetic field. At higher temperatures in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, $1/T_1$ passes through a broad maximum without any clear anomaly at the Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 38$\,K, suggesting the abundance of low-energy excitations that are indeed observed as two peaks in the THz spectra, both correspond to zone-center magnon excitations. At higher fields (above $H_c$), an excitation gap opens, and a re-distribution of the THz spectral weight is observed without any indication of an excitation continuum, in contrast to $α$-RuCl$_3$ where an excitation continuum was reported.

Detailed magnetization, specific heat, and $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on single crystals of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are reported. At high temperatures, {\cred anisotropy of the magnetization is reflected by the different Curie-Weiss temperatures for different field directions}, in agreement with the combination of a ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction ($K$) and a negative off-diagonal anisotropy ($Γ$) as two leading terms in the spin Hamiltonian. At low temperatures, magnetic fields applied along $a$ or $c$ have only a weak effect on the system and reduce the Néel temperature from 38 K at 0 T to about 35.5 K at 14 T, with no field-induced transitions observed up to 58 T on a powder sample. In contrast, the field applied along $b$ causes a drastic reduction in the $T_N$ that vanishes around $H_c=2.8$ T giving way to a crossover toward a quantum paramagnetic state. $^7$Li NMR measurements in this field-induced state reveal a gradual line broadening and a continuous evolution of the line shift with temperature, suggesting the development of local magnetic fields. The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows a peak around the crossover temperature 40 K and follows power-law behavior below this temperature.

An anomaly around 50 K and the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling (Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}\sim-51$ K) were inferred from our magnetic susceptibility data. The magnetic specific heat clearly manifests the onset of magnetic ordering in the vicinity of 48\,K and the recovered magnetic entropy, above the ordering temperature, falls short of the expected value, implying the presence of short-range magnetic correlations. The (ESR) line broadening on approaching the ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ could be described in terms of a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) scenario with $T_{\rm KT}=40(1)$ K. $^{7}$Li NMR line-shift probed as a function of temperature tracks the static susceptibility (K$_{iso}$) of magnetically coupled Mn$^{4+}$ ions. The $^{7}$Li spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T$$_{1}$) exhibits a sharp decrease below about 50 K. Combining our bulk and local probe measurements, we establish the presence of an ordered ground state for the honeycomb system Ag$_{3}$LiMn$_{2}$O$_{6}$.Our ab-initio electronic structure calculations suggest that in the $ab$-plane, the nearest neighbor (NN) exchange interaction is strong and AFM, while the next NN and the third NN exchange interactions are FM and AFM respectively. In the absence of any frustration the system is expected to exhibit long-range, AFM order, in agreement with experiment.

We have investigated the thermodynamic and local magnetic properties of the Mott insulating system Ag$_{3}$LiRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$ containing Ru$^{4+}$ (4$d$$^{4}$) for novel magnetism. The material crystallizes in a monoclinic $C2/m$ structure with RuO$_{6}$ octahedra forming an edge-shared two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with limited stacking order along the $c$-direction. The large negative Curie-Weiss temperature ($θ_{CW}$ = -57 K) suggests antiferromagnetic interactions among Ru$^{4+}$ ions though magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity show no indication of magnetic long-range order down to 1.8 K and 0.4 K, respectively. $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift follows the bulk susceptibility between 120-300 K and levels off below 120 K. Together with a power-law behavior in the temperature dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate between 0.2 and 2 K, it suggest dynamic spin correlations with gapless excitations. Electronic structure calculations suggest an $S = 1$ description of the Ru-moments and the possible importance of further neighbour interactions as also bi-quadratic and ring-exchange terms in determining the magnetic properties. Analysis of our $μ$SR data indicates spin freezing below 5 K but the spins remain on the borderline between static and dynamic magnetism even at 20 mK.

We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new system LiRhMnO$_{4}$ (LRMO) through x-ray diffraction, bulk magnetization, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. LRMO crystallizes in the cubic space group $\mathit{Fd}$$\bar{3}$$\mathit{m}$. From the DC susceptibility data, we obtained the Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -26 K and Curie constant $\mathit{C}$ = 1.79 Kcm$^{3}$/mol suggesting antiferromagnetic correlations among the magnetic Mn$^{4+}$ ions with an effective spin $\mathit{S}$ = $\frac{3}{2}$. At $\mathit{H}$ = 50 Oe, the field cooled and zero-field cooled magnetizations bifurcate at a freezing temperature, $T_{f}$ = 4.45 K, which yields the frustration parameter $\mathit{f=\frac{\midθ_{CW}\mid}{T_{f}}}>$5. AC susceptibility, shows a cusp-like peak at around $T_{f}$, with the peak position shifting as a function of the driving frequency, confirming a spin-glass-like transition in LRMO. LRMO also shows typical spin-glass characteristics such as memory effect, aging effect and relaxation. In the heat capacity, there is no sharp anomaly down to 2 K indicative of long-range ordering. The field sweep $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show broadening with decreasing temperature without any spectral line shift. The $^{7}$Li NMR spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates also show anomalies due to spin freezing near $T_{f}$.

We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (LZVO) through x-ray diffraction, dc and ac susceptibility, magnetic relaxation, aging, memory effect, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A Curie-Weiss fit of the dc susceptibility $χ_{\mathrm{dc}}$($\mathit{T}$) yields a Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -185 K. This suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among the magnetic vanadium ions. The dc and ac susceptibility data indicate the spin-glass behavior below a freezing temperature $T_{f}$ $\simeq$ 3 K. The frequency dependence of the $T_{f}$ is characterized by the Vogel-Fulcher law and critical dynamic scaling behavior or power law. From both fitting, we obtained the value of the characteristic angular frequency $ω_{0}$ $\approx$ 3.56$\times$10$^{6}$ Hz, the dynamic exponent $\mathit{zv}$ $\approx$ 2.65, and the critical time constant $τ_{0}$ $\approx$ 1.82$\times$10$^{-6}$ s, which falls in the conventional range for typical cluster spin-glass (CSG) systems. The value of relative shift in freezing temperature $δT_{f}$ $\simeq$ 0.039 supports a CSG ground states. We also found aging phenomena and memory effects in LZVO. The asymmetric response of the magnetic relaxation below $T_{f}$ supports the hierarchical model. Heat capacity data show no long-range or short-range ordering down to 2 K. Only about 25% magnetic entropy change $(ΔS_{\mathrm{m}})$ signifies the presence of strong frustration in the system. The $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show a shift and broadening with decreasing temperature. The spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates show anomalies due to spin freezing around 3 K as the bulk magnetization.

We report electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy results on the double perovskite Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$. On general grounds, this material is expected to be nonmagnetic due to the strong coupling of the spin and orbital momenta of Ir$^{5+}$ (5$d^4$) ions. However, controversial experimental reports on either strong antiferromagnetism with static order at low temperatures or just a weakly paramagnetic behavior have triggered a discussion on the breakdown of the generally accepted scenario of the strongly spin-orbit coupled ground states in the 5$d^4$ iridates and the emergence of a novel exotic magnetic state. Our data evidence that the magnetism of the studied material is solely due to a few percent of Ir$^{4+}$ and Ir$^{6+}$ magnetic defects while the regular Ir$^{5+}$ sites remain nonmagnetic. Remarkably, the defect Ir$^{6+}$ species manifest magnetic correlations in the ESR spectra at $T\lesssim 20$ K suggesting a long-range character of superexchange in the double prevoskites as proposed by recent theories.

The Neel temperature of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ increases with the slope of 0.9 K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field $H_c$ reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order. At 1.4 GPa, the ordered state breaks down upon a first-order transition giving way to a new ground state marked by the coexistence of dynamically correlated and frozen spins. This partial freezing in the absence of any conspicuous structural defects may indicate classical nature of the resulting pressure-induced spin liquid, an observation paralleled to the increase in the nearest-neighbor off-diagonal exchange $Γ$ under pressure.

Both methods confirm the absence of magnetic long-range order in this compound but find evidence for diluted localized paramagnetic moments. NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements suggest a slowing down of localized spin moments at low temperatures. An increase of the muSR spin-lattice relaxation rate lambda confirms the presence of weak magnetism in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ . However, these findings cannot be explained by the recently suggested excitonic type of magnetism. Instead, they point towards tiny amounts of localized paramagnetic spin centers leading to this magnetic response on the background of a simple nonmagnetic ground state of the 5d$^4$ ($J=0)$ electronic configuration of Ir$^{5+}$.

Despite the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature on the order of 10 K, neither long-range magnetic order nor spin freezing are observed down to at least 20 mK, such that spins are short-range correlated and dynamic over nearly three decades in temperature. Quadratic power-law behavior of both the spin-lattice relaxation rate and specific heat indicates the gapless nature of the ground state. We envisage that this exotic behavior may be related to an unprecedented combination of the triangular and buckled honeycomb geometries of nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in the mixed-valence setting.

Ba2YIrO6, a Mott insulator, with four valence electrons in Ir5+ d-shell (5d4) is supposed to be non-magnetic, with Jeff = 0, within the atomic physics picture. However, recent suggestions of non-zero magnetism have raised some fundamental questions about its origin. Focussing on the phonon dynamics, probed via Raman scattering, as a function of temperature and different incident photon energies, as an external perturbation. Our studies reveal strong renormalization of the phonon self-energy parameters and integrated intensity for first-order modes, especially redshift of the few first-order modes with decreasing temperature and anomalous softening of modes associated with IrO6 octahedra, as well as high energy Raman bands attributed to the strong anharmonic phonons and coupling with orbital excitations. The distinct renormalization of second-order Raman bands with respect to their first-order counterpart suggest that higher energy Raman bands have significant contribution from orbital excitations. Our observation indicates that strong anharmonic phonons coupled with electronic/orbital degrees of freedom provides a knob for tuning the conventional electronic levels for 5d-orbitals, and this may give rise to non-zero magnetism as postulated in recent theoretical calculations with rich magnetic phases.

These pairs form triangular bilayers in the $ab$-plane. The magnetic Rh and Ir ions occupy these bilayers, diluted by Ti ions even for $x$ = 1. These bilayers are separated by a triangular layer which is dominantly occupied by Ti ions. From magnetization measurements we infer strong antiferromagnetic couplings for all of the materials but the absence of any spin-freezing or spin-ordering down to 2~K. Further, specific heat measurements down to 0.35~K show no sign of a phase transition for any of the compounds. Recently, the iridate double perovskite Sr$_2$YIrO$_6$ has attracted considerable attention due to the report of unexpected magnetism in this Ir$^{5+}$ (5d$^4$) material, in which according to the J$_{eff}$ model, a non-magnetic ground state is expected. However, in recent works on polycrystalline samples of the series Ba$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$YIrO$_6$ no indication of magnetic transitions have been found. We present a structural, magnetic and thermodynamic characterization of Sr$_2$YIrO$_6$ single crystals, with emphasis on the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the specific heat. Here, we demonstrate the clue role of single crystal X-ray diffraction on the structural characterization of the Sr$_2$YIrO$_6$ double perovskite crystals by reporting the detection of a $\sqrt{2}a \times \sqrt{2}a \times 1c$ supercell, where $a$, $b$ and $c$ are the unit cell dimensions of the reported monoclinic subcell. In agreement with the expected non-magnetic ground state of Ir$^{5+}$ (5d$^4$) in Sr$_2$YIrO$_6$, no magnetic transition is observed down to 430~mK. Moreover, our results suggest that the low temperature anomaly observed in the specific heat is not related to the onset of long-range magnetic order. Instead, it is identified as a Schottky anomaly caused by paramagnetic impurities present in the sample, of the order of $n \sim 0.5(2)$ \%. These impurities lead to non-negligible spin correlations, which nonetheless, are not associated with long-range magnetic ordering.

Interestingly, Sr2YIrO6 (Ir5+ having 5d4 electronic configuration) was recently reported to exhibit long-range magnetic order at low temperature and the distorted IrO6 octahedra were discussed to cause the magnetism in this material. Hence, a comparison of structurally distorted Sr2YIrO6 with cubic Ba2YIrO6 may shed light on the source of magnetism in such Ir5+ materials with 5d4 configuration. Besides, Ir5+ materials having 5d4 are also interesting in the context of recently predicted excitonic types of magnetism. Here we report a single-crystal-based analysis of the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Ba2YIrO6. We observe that in Ba2YIrO6 for temperatures down to 0.4 K, long-range magnetic order is absent but at the same time correlated magnetic moments are present. We show that these moments are absent in fully relativistic ab initio band-structure calculations; hence, their origin is presently unclear.

CoAl2O4 spinel with magnetic Co2+ ions on the diamond A-lattice is known to be magnetically frustrated. We compare neutron single crystal diffraction patterns measured in zero and applied magnetic fields with the ones obtained from classical Monte-Carlo models. In simulations we test the influence of various parameters on diffraction patterns: the ratio of nearest-, J1, and next-nearest, J2, neighbor interactions, magnetic field applied along the principal crystallographic directions, and random disorder on the A(Co2+)- and B(Al3+)- sites. We conclude that the models considered so far explain the broadening of magnetic Bragg peaks in zero magnetic field and their anisotropic response to applied magnetic field only partly. As bulk properties of our single crystal are isotropic, we suggest that its microstructure, specifically <111>-twin boundaries, could be a reason of the nonconventional magnetic order in CoAl2O4.

We have carried out detailed bulk and local probe studies on the hexagonal oxides Ba3MIr2O9 (M=Sc,Y) where Ir is expected to have a fractional oxidation state of +4.5. In the structure, Ir-Ir dimers are arranged in an edge shared triangular network parallel to the ab plane. Whereas only weak anomalies are evident in the susceptibility data, clearer anomalies are present in the heat capacity data. Our 45Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lineshape (first order quadrupole split) is symmetric at room temperature but becomes progressively asymmetric with decreasing temperatures. This is suggestive of distortions in the structure which could arise from progressive tilt/rotation of the IrO6 octahedra with a decrease in temperature T. The 45Sc NMR spectral weight shifts near the reference frequency with decreasing T indicating the development of magnetic singlet regions. Around 10K, a significant change in the spectrum takes place with a large intensity appearing near the reference frequency but with the spectrum remaining multi-peak. It appears from our 45Sc NMR data that in Ba3ScIr2O9 significant disorder is still present below 10K. In the case of Ba3YIr2O9, the 89Y NMR spectral lines are asymmetric at high temperatures but become nearly symmetric (single magnetic environment) below T~70K. Our 89Y spectra and T1 measurements confirm the onset of long range ordering (LRO) from a bulk of the sample at 4K in this compound. Our results suggest that Ba3YIr2O9 might be structurally distorted at room temperature (via, for example, tilt/rotations of the IrO6 octahedra) but becomes progressively a regular triangular lattice with decreasing T. The effective magnetic moments and magnetic entropy changes are strongly reduced in Ba3YIr2O9 as compared to those expected for a S=1/2 system. Similar effects have been found in other iridates which naturally have strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC).

The 75As nuclei close to the Eu2+ moments likely have a very short spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and are wiped out of our measurement window. The 75As nuclei relatively far from Eu2+ moments are probed in this study. Increasing the Eu content progressively decreases the signal intensity with no signal found for the full-Eu sample (x=0). The large 75As NMR linewidth arises from an inhomogeneous magnetic environment around them. The spin lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) for x=0.5 and 0.7 samples is nearly independent of temperature above 100K and results from a coupling to paramagnetic fluctuations of the Eu2+ moments. The behavior of 1/T1 at lower temperatures has contributions from the antiferromagnetic fluctuations of the Eu2+ moments as also the fluctuations intrinsic to the FeAs planes and from superconductivity.

We report the structural transformation of hexagonal Ba3YIr2O9 to a cubic double perovskite form (stable in ambient conditions) under an applied pressure of 8GPa at 1273K. While the ambient pressure (AP) synthesized sample undergoes long-range magnetic ordering at 4K, the high pressure(HP) synthesized sample does not order down to 2K as evidenced from our susceptibility, heat capacity and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Further, for the HP sample, our heat capacity data have the form gamma*T+beta*T3 in the temperature (T) range of 2-10K with the Sommerfeld coefficient gamma=10mJ/mol-Ir K2. The 89Y NMR shift has no T-dependence in the range of 4-120K and its spin-lattice relaxation rate varies linearly with T in the range of 8-45K (above which it is T-independent). Resistance measurements of both the samples confirm that they are semiconducting. Our data provide evidence for the formation of a 5d based, gapless, quantum spin-liquid (QSL) in the cubic (HP) phase of Ba3YIr2O9. In this picture, the T term in the heat capacity and the linear variation of 89Y 1/T1 arises from excitations out of a spinon Fermi surface. Our findings lend credence to the theoretical suggestion [G. Chen, R. Pereira, and L. Balents, Phys. Rev. B 82, 174440 (2010)] that strong spin-orbit coupling can enhance quantum fluctuations and lead to a QSL state in the double perovskite lattice.

119Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) in SnO2 nanoparticles were measured as a function of temperature and compared with those of SnO2 bulk sample. A 15% loss of 119Sn NMR signal intensity for the nano sample compared to the bulk sample was observed. This is indicative of ferromagnetism from a small fraction of the sample. Another major finding is that the recovery of the 119Sn longitudinal nuclear magnetization in the nano sample follows a stretched exponential behavior, as opposed to that in bulk which is exponential. Further, the 119Sn 1/T1 at room temperature is found to be much higher for the nano sample than for its bulk counterpart. These results indicate the presence of magnetic fluctuations in SnO2 nanoparticles in contrast to the bulk (non-nano) which is diamagnetic. These local moments could arise from surface defects in the nanoparticles.

Abstract:
The evolution of 75As NMR parameters with composition and temperature was probed in the Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 system where Fe is replaced by isovalent Ru. While the Ru-end member was found to be a conventional Fermi liquid, the composition (x=0.5) corresponding to the highest Tc (20K) in this system shows an upturn in 75As 1/T1T below about 80 K evidencing the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctu…

These results are similar to those obtained in another system with isovalent substitution BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 [Y. Nakai, T. Iye, S. Kitagawa, K. Ishida, H. Ikeda, S. Kasahara, H. Shishido, T. Shibauchi, Y. Matsuda, and T. Terashima, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 107003 (2010)] and point to the possible role of AFM fluctuations in driving superconductivity.

Abstract:
The resistive and reactive parts of the magneto-impedance of sintered ferromagnetic samples of La0.7Sr0.3-xAgxMnO3 (x = 0.05, 0.25) have been measured at room temperature (<Tc) over frequency interval 1KHz to 15MHz and in presence of magnetic field up to 4KOe. The field dependence of relative change in resistance is small in KHz region but increases strongly for higher frequency of excitation. The maximum value of relative change in resistance at H =4KOe was found to be around 70% at 15MHz frequency. On the contrary the corresponding change in reactance has less frequency sensitivity and the maximum occurs at 1MHz frequency. The magneto-impedance is negative for all frequencies. The 'normalized magneto-impedance' as defined by [Z(H)-Z(0)]/[Z(0)-Z(4K)] when plotted against scaled field H/H1/2 is found to be frequency independent ; H1/2 is the field where 'normalized magneto-impedance' is reduced to half its maximum. A phenomenological formula for magneto-impedance Z (H) in ferromagnetic material is proposed based on Pade approximant. The formula for Z (H) predicts the scaled behavior of 'normalized magneto-impedance'.
