The colors and shapes of crucian carps are different according to their habitat.
They’re about 10-30cm long with a flat body and slightly wider caudal fin. They have a short head, with small eyes, and a short snout and smallmouth. The lips are thick and cover the mouth. The lower jaw is shorter than the upper jaw. There is no whisker at the edge of the mouth. It has round scales, but no scales on the head. The lateral line is complete and the middle is slightly curved toward the abdomen. The back end of the caudal fin is deep inside. The back of the body is greenish brown, and the abdomen is silvery white or yellowish brown. The color of the body varies greatly depending on where they live. Some living in flowing water have a blue colour and others living in stagnant water have a yellow colour. They are omnivorous, eating almost all organic matter including small crustaceans, rotifers, insect larvae, and plant seeds. They live in fresh water all over Korea, and are distributed throughout Manchuria, southern Siberia, China, Taiwan, and Japan.
