Forum: software Subject: Request for VirtualBox VDIs/OVAs of classic distros of Linux

I'd like to muck around with some classic distros of Linux from the 1990s/early-to-mid-2000s. Currently I have virtual machines of Linux Mint 2.0 and 3.0, as well as live boot distros Knoppix 3.2 and DemoLinux 3.01, and I would like to try some others.

I would very much appreciate it if you fine, respectable, well-dressed people would upload some VirtualBox VDIs or OVAs with another vintage Linux distro for me to muck around with.

You can create the VDI yourself with VirtualBox by adding a CD player to your machine and booting an ISO. Just select the HD for booting after the installation.

Some ISO of Red Hat:

Make another search for another distro.

Also look on Distrowatch.org if you can find them:

The reason I asked for a VDI is because I have tried, and failed, various times to create virtual machines with vintage Linux ISOs, including several releases of Red Hat. With most of the distros I've tried the installation fails, and I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Ok, I'm downloading Mandrake 6.1 (1CD only) and will try.
Maybe the hardware of your virtual machine is not compatible ;)

I was able to start the install CD and make installation until the selection of the monitor (probably the last step). Maybe I have to stay in VGA.

The key was to set the SATA Controller to Bus Logic (SCSI) and select SCSI during the installation (Bus logic adapter). I was able to create the partitions (/ mount point of 920 MB with the Linux native ext2?) and 80 MB for the Swap, on a total of 1GB.

At some point I swapped my Virtualbox keyboard to Soft (virtual) to enter the passwords. I have not created a boot disk maybe it was my error.

I also changed my mouse from PS2 (not detected) to generic.

You should try again with Mandrake 6.1.

* General:
O.S: Other Linux 32 bits

* System:
Base memory: 32 MB
Boot order: floppy, optical, hard disk
Acceleration: nested paging, PAE/NX, KVM Para...

* Display:
Video Memory: 16 MB
Graphics controller: VMSVGA
Remote: disabled
recording: disabled

* Storage:
Controller IDE:
IDE secondary Device 0: Optical drive - Mandrake 6.1.iso
Controller: SATA
SCSI Port 0: Mandrake 6.1.vhd (normal, 1GB)

* Audio:
Host driver: Default
Controller: Soundblaster 16

* Network:
Adapter 1: intel PRO/1000 MT desktop (NAT)

* USB:
USB Controller: OHCI, EHCI
Device filters: 0 (0 active)

* Let me if this helps :)

Ok, it works brother:

I just changed the graphic mode to VBoxVGA,
removed the live CD (I knew that)
ANDDD => unselect the boot order in the settings, to let only Floppy and HD.

With the bug of monitor I was not able to run startx but here is a screen in console mode :)

Thank you for the help, but I must admit I am still stuck at the hard drive partition part, I feel like such a dunce. There's probably something very simple I'm overlooking, that's usually how it is.

Do this: 2 partitions:
- Main as Linux native type of 920 MB:
Mount point: /
- Swap as Swap type of 80 MB
No mount point

At the end of installation, copy the boot into Master boot record of the HD, change the order of boot as specified in previous post and normally select a Generic Monitor with default framerate but it worked not for me.
