Franz von Stuck’s art, with sinister elements of Symbolism and decorativeness of Art Nouveau, made him one of the most celebrated German artists at the turn of the 20th century.

In his American debut at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Franz von Stuck (1863–1928) was praised by critics as “one of the most versatile and ingenious of contemporary German artists.” The renowned Symbolist painter, architect, designer, and cofounder of the Munich Secession exhibited his most famous painting, Sin, an iconic work of the fin de siècle, at the Third Annual Exhibition at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh in 1898.

The story of Medusa has always infuriated me. According to some, Medusa was fleeing the god Poseidon and took refuge in Athena’s temple. Being Greek god however, this didn’t stop him and he raped her.
