Research Positions at SICS
==========================

The PIRAIA research group at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science
is a group studying the programming and architecture of autonomous
robots. We are seeking to fill two vacant full-time research positions
in robot electronics, starting at earliest October 1.

We work on developing algorithms and real-time programming methods for
novel kinds of complex robot systems, such as cooperating sets of
robots, and robots with many degrees of freedom. One important,
integral part if this work is to develop and interface new types of
sensors, for which we have a well-equipped laboratory. We are
currently using the B12 and B21 robots from Real-World Interface, and
two Genghis II from IS Robotics, as well as a number of our own
robots.

Job description:

Developing and interfacing new sensors to robots. Developing
communication systems between robots. Sensor signal processing. Design
and low-level control of novel robot features. Developing ideas for
new kinds of robots.

We use PIC processors and the I2C bus extensively, so interest in and
ability to work with these is essential.

The most important qualification is a solid practical and theoretical
base in electrical engineering. For an applicant with a very broad
range of skills, from the very low to the very high level, tasks may
also include developing software and algorithms for the control of
novel robot architectures.

The salary would be very approximately 15-25 KSEK/month, depending on
the qualifications of the candidate.

Requirements:

- MSc, PhD, or equivalent, preferrably in EE/Robotics.

- Proven practical skill and experience in electronics. Sensors,
interfaces, and communications knowledge is vital. Experience with PIC
and the I2C bus is a definite plus.

- Wide programming experience, including C and assembly language.
Knowledge of Lisp/Scheme, Prolog, real-time languages, and concurrent
languages is an advantage.

- Experience with Unix, IBM PC, and single board computers.

- Knowledge of robotics, control theory, computer science, esp.
real-time processing, programming languages, compiler design, and
operating systems.

- Experience with publishing academic papers in conferences, journals,
and presenting original work.

- Ability to work independently and also contribute ideas within a
research group.

These positions would tentatively be for a fiscal year ending in March
1995, with probable renewal. SICS is located in Kista, about 15
minutes by subway from central Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.
