Hi all,

Just a short status update (longer one to follow). As of 8 pm (PDT),
Tuesday, August 2nd, Dante II reached the "bottom" of the Crater Peak
region of Mt. Spurr. The relatively (though extremely rocky) flat
bottom area was achieved after descending 650 feet (tether
payout). Dante II spent several hours conducting a video survey with
its mast cameras under the control of scientists at the NASA Ames
Research Center (Mt. View, California). The ascent to the crater rim
is scheduled to begin today (8/3/94) and continue for 2-3 days.

-Terry
