IXYS makes a chip called the IXDP610 which interfaces directly to a micro-
processor and outputs two PWM signals to drive an H-bridge. It takes a 7-bit
or 8-bit number to generate the signals and has a couple of other features.
I think it cost $6 or $7 dollars about four years ago. Give them a call to
find a local supplier. They also make a two channel PWM version and an
encoder reader chip that interfaces the same way.

Also, Intel and Signetics and probably some others make 8051 compatible
microprocessors with a configurable PWM output lines.
