We did in fact take apart the pots that were in the servos, that is
where I originally got this idea.  We also "fixed" the pot so that
it would turn 360 degrees by flattening a metal tab in the pots
casing.  The real problem is the (carbon?) ring is interrupted where
it connects with the leads and this keeps the whiskers from
completing a full (smooth) revolution.  At this point we're thing
about just using the encoders out of a mouse, but I would be
interested in hearing from anyone who tries using the pots in
servos which have been considered by most "extra" parts which need
to be by passed and not used.
