You might think about getting a copy of Matt Marjonovic's Paper:
"An Electronic Compass for Small Autonomous Robots".
If you don't mind hunting down a few unusual components and doing a little
wire wrap, you can build yourself a nice compass for $50 (although we've had
a little trouble with sensitivity on ours). The paper is available by anon
ftp at ftp.ai.mit.edu in the /pub/maddog directory as bs-thesis.ps.Z. Of
course, you need a postscript printer to print it.
